Thank you
Assalamu Alaikum,
On behalf of Islamic Relief Canada, I would like to thank you and the community for your support of our Emergency Water, Sanitation, Hygiene and Livelihoods Assistance project in Yemen. We pray that Allah accepts your efforts and contributions, and that He reward you generously for your donation.
In December 2019 at the RIS Convention, you donated to support Islamic Relief’s water projects in Yemen. This project is now complete and your donation has helped transform 14 villages in Amran, Yemen, who did not have access to safe water sources, and were suffering from drought and illness. With your support, we rehabilitated 2 water systems into solar-powered systems that deliver clean water for 5,100 individuals right to their neighbourhoods.
We are extremely grateful to donors like yourself for supporting our emergency and development efforts across the world. Because of your generosity, your brothers and sisters in Yemen have access to clean water — the source of better health, food security, education and a dignified life.
We pray that Allah accepts our efforts and grants us the ability to continue helping those in need across the world, Ameen.
Regards, Usama Khan CEO, Islamic Relief CanadaFinal Report: Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH) Component
Through this project, Islamic Relief was working to control the spread of Acute Water Diarrheal diseases and improve access to safe drinking water and hygiene practices in targeted communities. This project is now completed and Islamic Relief has successfully rehabilitated two water sources that were chosen at the beginning of the project. These water systems now serve 5,100 individuals in 14 villages and provide them access to clean water through your support!
Summary: Water Systems Rehabilitation
Two water quality tests were conducted with two samples for each water source (one at the beginning of pumping and one at the end) to make sure that there were no physical or biological contaminations, and both sources were portable and safe for drinking purposes as well.
The water systems were designed by determining tanks and the positions of water points. The rehabilitation of water sources started, water pumps and motors were installed, solar panels footing were constructed, and solar panels were installed, AC and DC wires were connected, combined boxes and inverters were installed, and the system operated as per the designed specifications.
Summary: Hygiene Sessions & WASH Awareness
Hygiene sessions were also conducted in the community, and the hygiene promotion materials were distributed to help raise awareness among the rights-holders and thus protect them from water borne/other viral diseases.
48 awareness sessions were conducted for 481 direct rightsholders focusing on topics including the safe storage of drinking water, hand washing, toilet maintenance and cleaning and the causes of cholera and how to protect oneself from it. Hygiene kits were also distributed in the target locations. 385 hygiene kits were distributed, consisting of bath soaps, washing powder, two jerry cans, water tablets and water buckets.

Project Implementation Principles & Standards
Operational Sustainability
To ensure long term operation and maintenance of these systems, two community committees (Water Management Committees) were selected, consisting of six men and two women each. The committees are trained and responsible for the overall operation and maintenance of the water supply systems after the completion of the project.
Safeguarding Women & Girls
The rehabilitated community water supply systems gave women and children the opportunity to have separate access to water through a segregated gender terminal. The designed project activities were done based on the children's and women's needs separately while taking gender into account.
Securing access to safe water and rehabilitation of water supply systems spared women, girls and boys the time spent and the efforts of fetching water from a distance and secured enough time for girls and boys to attend schools to obtain education rather than spending most of their day time in collecting water.
Environmental Sustainability and Climate Adaptation
The project aimed to utilize the level of sunlight that the country receives by installing solar powered water pumps that do not rely on fuel or electricity to run. Electricity in Yemen is tightly rationed and often available in hardhit areas for only a few hours a day. This project was therefore able to both build local community resilience as well as address the economic, social and more importantly the environmental impact.
In Yemen, including the targeted location, environmental risks, such as limited natural freshwater resources, water pollution from sewage, inadequate potable water, and poor water management are persistent. Existing water systems in targeted locations were largely non-functional and most of the area needed rehabilitation of water sources and solar system installation to minimize the greenhouse gases to protect the environment from degradation.
Most of the water systems that were nonfunctional were also running on diesel systems, which were dangerous as well as damaging to the environment, producing high levels of greenhouse gas emissions. The project ensured environmental protection was mainstreamed in the project planning, implementation and reporting. Islamic Relief applied our Environment Policy throughout the project duration. Moreover, our team in Yemen carried out careful analysis of the key issues linked to the environment as well as potential negative issues that could arise and ways to mitigate negative impacts. This analysis was also based on years of experience implementing similar activities.
Water Well Inscription
Special thanks to the families and individuals who contributed significant amounts to make this project possible.
Their names are inscribed on this well for the community to remember in their duas. May Allah accept and reward this as a Sadaqa Jariya (ongoing charity) for all those who contributed!
Success Story
Hussain, 50 years old
Hussain Al Qadhi lives in Al Theleth village, in the Suwayr district of the Amran Governorate, Yemen. He is the father of nine children and is the breadwinner of his family. As a result of the ongoing conflict, his salary was suspended and he has been struggling to feed his family. He shares his story and how this project has changed their lives.
“When my salary had been cut off, I had to look for an alternative source of income that could help me sustain my family. I had to rely on my livestock for my income and livelihood. However, drought still remains the main issue in the Suwayr district, which results in water shortage. We consequently have no water to drink, let alone sow seeds and plants for humans and animals. So we only wait for the rainy season.
We were struggling to get access to clean drinking water. Women used to spend almost a half day fetching water from far-away natural sources. Our animals, donkeys, have been getting exhausted from carrying jerry cans filled with water from far distances. I still remember one day my donkey died a few kilometres away from the water source carrying water and then we had to carry the water ourselves back home.
I became involved within this project when Islamic Relief Yemen had started making visits and forming the community committees. We worked day and night to make the project succeed because our happiness to make our dreams come true in real life motivated us to exert all our efforts to accomplish this magnificent project.
Owing to the contaminated water we were drinking, many diseases like cholera, diarrhea and malaria spread among us. We were exposed to sickness. Now people are comfortable now that the project is complete because clean water is available in our area, diseases have disappeared and finally we feel safe. Since Suwayr district lacks water sources, this water project implemented by Islamic Relief Yemen is the biggest achievement in our area.
In addition, now the water pipeline is only 15 meters away from my home, that’s why I said we become so comfortable and happy, thanks to the great efforts exerted by Islamic Relief Yemen as the organization provided us with a solar system, water pipelines and water tanks. We will never get a project like this in all my life.
Your organization provided us with a project, which is so big that we have become speechless to ask for more. We really thank you Islamic Relief Yemen and Islamic Relief Canada for this support and we call on the international organizations to implement similar activities in our area.”
At Islamic Relief, we believe in bypassing short-term interventions and high running costs to instead provide long-term sustainable and community oriented solutions. This ensures both an amplified impact and sustainable change!
Thank You for Your Support!
Jazakum Allahu Khairan for your continued sup port and kindness for the world’s most vulnerable. Your support has made an immense difference for these communities in Yemen. Their lives will be forever changed, and their futures made brighter.
We could not do it without you, thank you.
