elcome to America’s favorite island! There’s a reason Hilton Head consistently ranks in the top vacation spots in the U.S. and among the world’s most beloved destinations. to showcase all that the Lowcountry has to offer, and we’re passionate about connecting generations of visitors to our award-winning Island’s most exciting offerings. Remember that all of our “priceless” publications can be viewed online 24/7, to keep all the information you need right at hand. We hope our listings will help guide you to the vacation of your dreams!

One of Hilton Head’s most anticipated annual events is the RBC Heritage golf tournament, held at Sea Pines since 1969. As of press time, this time-honored Hilton Head tradition is set to move forward as scheduled beginning on April 12, but with limited spectators and enhanced safety protocols. For more information, check out our special guide to the tournament and keep checking RBCHeritage.com for the latest.

In this month’s issue, join us as we talk about the joys of golfing in April with Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy instructor Doug Weaver, and Capt. Miles Altman casts a line and tells another tale of life out on the water. We hope these stories will inspire you to get back to an old hobby or try something new, like parasailing, kayaking, paddleboarding, hiking, biking, jet skiing, horseback riding, fishing, golfing or any number of other exciting activities — the possibilities are endless!

To keep tabs on what else is happening on the Island in April, be sure to check out our Calendar of Events, and for even more of the Lowcountry and the Coastal Empire, head over to hiltonhead.com, hiltonheadisland.com, bluffton.com, savannah.com, stsimonsisland.com and beaufort.com. Here at Island Events, we make it our business

Now that you’re here, there’s nothing left to do but let the white sand and ocean breeze lull your senses and awaken your imagination. Whether you’re here for family time, one-onone time, get-away-from-it-all time or just some all-around beach time, we can guarantee that you’ve come to the right place. Welcome to Hilton Head!

HOROSCOPE ARIES

Are you walking on eggshells? This is not a good place for the Ram, and you may be feeling sick of it. If you choose to lock horns with an adversary, remain calm, respectful and diplomatic. Conflict can sometimes lead to a more balanced relationship.

TAURUS Spring is a time of renewal and opening up, and you may notice that one of the rooms in your realm is just not up to snuff. This month, go after it! Literally creating more space in your life is an excellent use of your time and is a gift that will continue to give. Everyone is going to love it! GEMINI

You may feel that the past year ruined some things for you. But letting external factors dictate your mood is a slippery slope. It’s up to you to operate as well as you can under the circumstances. This month, double down on what’s good in your life!

CANCER

Whether or not you practice this, you know it deep down: honesty is the best policy. Don’t do yourself the disservice of stretching the truth all the time without good reason. This month, practice choosing truth rather than jumping to the easy excuse.

LEO A recent study concluded that the most important quality for happy relationships is psychological flexibility. Identify some areas where you demonstrate mental rigidity and consider how you might give them a good stretch. VIRGO

The giant wave you’ve been riding lately is still going! Instead of wondering why the Muse has chosen you, work to harvest everything you can from the richness of this moment. You don’t know when or if there will be another opportunity. 28 Island Events April 2021

APRIL 2021 LIBRA Your confidence has taken a hit recently, and the temptation to hide away is strong. Instead of retreating, sink your teeth into whatever it is that you do best. Here, you will find joy in your passion and the strength to pop back into yourself. SCORPIO

This month, Scorpio, you will be reminded of all that you have to celebrate. Embrace it! Be sure to record the magical times when you can — the memories of these happy days will help keep you focused on what’s most important.

SAGITTARIUS

Humans are cyclical creatures, and mental health is no different. This month, you may struggle to look on the bright side. Be gentle with yourself, glean what you can from the experience and be ready to apply this wisdom the next time around.

CAPRICORN

In some ways you are incredibly shy. It’s okay to shield your softer parts from the world, but make sure you aren’t obscuring any of your light in the process. You feel that you have a lot to give, so take some steps to put yourself out there!

AQUARIUS

There is a cause you’ve been quietly stalking for some time now. If you believe that it will benefit others and make the world a better place, go for it! This month, you will have a major revelation about your path moving forward.

PISCES You may feel that things are just not going well in the romance department, Pisces. Instead of assigning blame, take one giant step back and try to look at it objectively. When you do this, a key piece of the puzzle will finally fall into place. hiltonhead.com

32 Island Events April 2021

nated for the Alder Lane, Coligny, Driessen, Folly Field and Islanders Beach Parks. The boundaries will be clearly marked on the beach and in the water. Lifeguards are stationed at these designated areas for assistance and beach information.

Beach Marker Signs:

Hilton Head’s beaches are marked near the dune line with signs to let emergency responders know where assistance is needed. They are also useful as a reference point if you or your group should become lost.

Beach Safety Tips: • Apply and reapply plenty of sunscreen even on cloudy days. • Wear sunglasses to prevent damage from the sun. • Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water. • Be aware of the rules and regulations of the beach. Signs are posted near most beach accesses. • Don’t leave your kids unsupervised even in guarded areas. • Note the location of the nearest lifeguard and report any hazardous conditions to him or her. • Know the name of the beach or hotel/ condo and the beach marker number where you are staying if you should need assistance. • There are often jellyfish and stingrays, as well as other sea life in and out of the water, which may sting or cut a person. In any situation where first aid is needed, find a lifeguard or seek further medical attention. • Call or wave for help if you are in trouble. hiltonhead.com

Water Safety Tips: • Don’t enter the water if you can’t swim. • Swim near a lifeguard. • Ask the lifeguard about any dangers in the water or on the beach, especially if he or she is flying a yellow caution flag. • Be aware of direction and strength of longshore currents. These currents can take you up and down the beach quickly and cause you or your kids to get lost. • Don’t let your kids swim unsupervised even in guarded areas. • Don’t swim alone. Use the buddy system so that someone always knows where you are so they can get help if needed. • Don’t overestimate your swimming ability. Stay in chest-deep or less water to insure you don’t get stuck in water over your head. • Don’t rely on flotation devices. • Swim parallel to shore if you want to swim long distances. • Don’t swim against the current. Swim across the current to escape the pull. • Always swim sober. • Don’t dive into unknown water or shallow breaking waves. Always go feet first.

Beach Prohibitions: The following are prohibited on all beaches: – Possession or consumption of alcohol – Glass (bottles, containers, etc.) – Littering – Indecent exposure or nudity – Disorderly conduct – Disturbing the peace – Unauthorized vehicles – Fires and fireworks – Shark fishing – Horseback riding or motorized driving – Removal, harming or harassment of any hiltonhead.com

Neptune K Statue

at Shelter Cove Harbour he towering 12-foot bronze statue of Neptune, which doubles as a largerthan-life sundial, serves as an iconic symbol of Shelter Cove Harbour at Palmetto Dunes, welcoming visitors to the entrance of the popular waterfront dining and shopping location.

T

Designed and installed by sculptor Wayne Edwards, this much-loved statue serves as a tribute to Neptune, the Roman god of the sea. The King Neptune statue, which depicts a bearded Neptune holding his signature trident, serves as a popular centerpiece at Shelter Cove Harbour. The statue is strategically mounted on a circular base with numbers around the edge. When the trident’s shadow falls across the 26-foot-wide base, the numbers indicate the precise time. Hailed as the world’s largest figurative sundial, the statue was originally cast at a foundry in Princeton, New Jersey, and shipped by truck to Hilton Head Island in 1983. Engineers made meticulous measurements before the one-ton statue was installed, ensuring that it would be located at the ideal angle to indicate the time. They oriented the sculpture towards true south by aligning the constellation Ursa Major with the North Star. An official dedication for the statue was held at Shelter Cove Harbour on August 11, 1983, attracting residents and visitors alike. Today, the King Neptune statue delights generations of visitors to Shelter Cove Harbour, impressing adults and children of all ages. Stop by to see King Neptune in person and to experience a true Hilton Head Island icon.

The Town of Hilton Head Island provides nearly 60 miles of public pathways and nature trails for the enjoyment of pedestrians and cyclists.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ON THE PATHS: • Obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws. • Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users. • Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles. • Do not ride on roads when a pathway is available. • Ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists.

please move off the pathway. • Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flashlight. Bicycles must have a red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night. • When approaching slower pathway users from behind, please sound your warning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left. • Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under.

• WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you.

• Make eye contact and use hand signals. Assume other bicyclists and motorists don’t see you. Hand signals tell motorists and other path users what you intend to do and will ensure everyone’s safety on the paths.

• Yield to pedestrians. When resting or stopped,

• Be courteous, alert and predictable.

American Alligators Are Active in April

By Anthony R. Savarese, Reel Carolina

N

ative to the Island, alligators are often seen here, but they can be elusive during the heat of summer and the cold of winter. Alligators will go into a semihibernation period during the coldest months of the year. They emerge from their dens in the spring, especially in April, when the days are warmer. They spread out on the banks of lagoons, soaking up the sun’s warmth. This month, alligators are busy starting their courtships in hopes of finding a mate. An iconic image of the Lowcountry, the American alligator is the main attraction on the H2O Alligator and Nature Tour. The Sea Pines Forest Preserve is a wonderful place to observe these animals in their natural environment. Another great place to see these reptiles is on the golf greens. This month, the banks of the Island's many courses are lined with gators catching some rays. Alligators are ectothermic (cold blooded), so heat plays a major role in their bodily functions. Digestion and anabolic activity are all reliant on their ability to absorb and maintain body heat. If the animal has absorbed too much heat in the middle of summer, they will dive to the bottom of the lakes, burrow into the mud and slow their heart rate, so as to not burn up the oxygen in their system. Alligators can stay submerged for long periods of time, and some have been known to stay underwater for over an hour. An apex predator, the alligator’s diet consists of fish, birds and turtles. However, they are 56 Island Events April 2021

scavengers and will eat anything they can find, even something dead and decaying! Because alligators have high levels of stomach acid, they can eat food that other animals, such as humans, find fouled or contaminated. This extraordinary adaptation is a critical aspect of survival for these creatures. Like other reptiles, alligators do not have to eat as much as warm-blooded animals and, depending on their environment’s temperature, can go long periods without eating. However, they are also capable of taking down large animals of prey. Visitors or people unfamiliar with the alligator species should proceed with caution, because they can be very dangerous to humans. For the first year or so of an alligator’s life, momma gators will be especially protective of their babies. If you see a young alligator sunning itself this month, do not approach it. There is a good chance that its mother is close by. The American Alligator is a precious natural resource that at one time was considered rare and endangered. Due to conservation efforts and education of the humans who share the same ecosystem and environment, alligators have experienced a rise in numbers and are no longer considered threatened. Spring and fall are ideal times to reel in bull reds in Lowcountry waters.

Fishing for Red Drum Article and photo by Miles Altman, Bayrunner Fishing Charters

wenty-five feet below the surface, a marauding school of bull reds swept the sandy bottom in search of prey. Honing in on the smell of fresh-cut mullet, a large bull inhaled the chunk and, upon feeling the bite of the 8/0 circle hook, put his broad shoulders and tail into high gear. Twenty-five feet above the bottom, on board the Phantom, the medium-heavy spinning rod bucked and then bent double as the reel drag started singing that song all anglers love to hear: line disappearing off the spool at a high rate of speed. One of the bright spots in our local fisheries is the impressive comeback of the red drum. Years of tight restrictions on bag limits and increased mariculture efforts by the state have resulted in one of our most prolific resurgences. Known by many names — including spottail bass, redfish (smaller ones) and bull reds (bigger ones) — the red drum offers some of the best sportfishing for Lowcountry anglers, regardless of whether they are land-bound or boaters. Bull reds make two strong runs a year: in

58 Island Events April 2021

April and in the fall, usually September and October. During these times, catching doubledigit numbers of 20- to 40-pounders is not uncommon. An occasional bull can be caught any time of the year — and the smaller ones are here all yearlong too — but it’s nothing compared to the spring and fall. On the Phantom, I like to use medum-heavy spinning rods with 40-pound braid. I fish a fairly tight drag; letting the battle wear on with lighter stuff increases the recovery time and the mortality of the released fish. Multiple hookups are fairly common, creating a Chinese fire drill on board, as anglers strive to keep the strong fish from tangling. Red drum make for great fishing! When it comes to reeling in big bull reds, the time is now. Capt. Miles Altman of Bayrunner Fishing Charters has more than 42 years experience fishing the waters surrounding Hilton Head Island. The Finatic boat, which can accommodate up to 12 passengers, features a special three-hour shark/dolphin ecotour trip. Why April is THE Month for Golf on Hilton Head By Doug Weaver, Director of Instruction, Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy

1. Spring on Hilton Head is a wonderful time to be out on the green. With blooming azaleas, cool breezes, mild temperatures and new growth everywhere you look, April is an ideal time to spend time outdoors and engage in golf.

2. To golf is to play. Golf is not an easy game, but it is a game of ease, and it’s a leisure sport as well as a recreational sport. If played correctly — with a physically relaxed form and low expectations — it can refresh and revitalize.

3. The Annual RBC Heritage Classic comes to town April 12-18! Watch South Carolina’s own Dustin Johnson, the #1 golfer in the world, play in this exciting annual event and golfing highlight on Hilton Head. Limited spectators will be allowed this year, and buying tickets contributes to the more than $40 million that has been distributed to those in need throughout the Lowcountry since 1987. Visit www.rbcheritage.com or call (843) 671-2448.

4. Learn from a former PGA Tour pro and the 2017 Carolinas PGA Teacher of the Year. Every Monday, I give free lessons from 4-5 p.m. at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Course. Out on the pristine green of the Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort, I perform trick shots and share golfing tips in a hands-on, interactive workshop. Volunteer for a lesson and get the chance to win a 60 Island Events April 2021

HILTON HEAD HISTORY

Hilton Head Island has a long and rich history of visitors. 1520s

Thousands of Years Ago Native Americans came to hunt and fish.

1663 Captain William Hilton sailed the British ship Adventure north from Barbados, scouting lands to grow sugar cane for the crown. Approaching the Island by way of Port Royal Sound, he encountered a sliver of land and called it “Hilton's Headland.”

1861-1865 The Civil War brought big changes to Hilton Head Island. At the onset of the conflict, the South erected Fort Walker to protect the port. When the fort fell, tens of thousands of Union troops, prisoners, missionaries, shopkeepers and enslaved men and women seeking asylum flooded the Island. Suddenly humming with activity, Hilton Head became instrumental in the North's blockade of nearby Southern ports. In 1863, the town of Mitchelville became the first self-governed town for freed men and women.

Late 1950s

Developer and environmentalist Charles E. Fraser began work on the Island’s first resort, which he called Sea Pines. Fraser is sometimes called the father of the modern resort, and his vision for the Island was progressive, even by modern standards. His determination that no building be “higher than the tallest tree,” as well as his rejection of flashy neon signs, became central to the Island's distinctive character. 62 Island Events April 2021

Conquistadors explored the area.

17th, 18th & 19th Centuries For many years, few permanent residents made their home on Hilton Head Island. Though the humid, subtropical climate was ideal for growing agricultural crops like cotton and rice, fear of disease and isolation kept antebellum plantation owners on the mainland. Africans worked the plantations, and their unique blend of African and European traditions gave birth to the Gullah culture, which survives even today.

Post Civil War - 1956 After the Civil War, the Island's population dropped to around 3,000, and by 1940, it had fallen to just over 1,000. Electricity finally came to the Island in 1950 and, six years later, Hilton Head’s very first bridge to the mainland made the area significantly more accessible.

Today Fraser's legacy lives on in Hilton Head Island’s balance of commerce with green spaces, golf courses with wild places and thoroughfares with biking trails. Recently voted the Best Island in the U.S. by Travel and Leisure readers for the third time, this family-friendly sea island seamlessly combines luxury, adventure and charm -- all in one unforgettable destination. hiltonhead.com

WHAT TO KNOW

On Hilton Head Island

Alcohol:

Drinking/possession of alcohol on Hilton Head's public beaches is illegal and could result in a fine of up to $500. Liquor stores are not open on Sundays in South Carolina, though you can buy wine and beer in some gas stations and supermarkets.

Roundabouts:

You might as well learn to love South Carolina’s roundabouts. They're everywhere! There are just a few rules to follow in the two-lane roundabout: • The drivers already in the roundabout have the right of way. • Always yield to them before entering the roundabout. • A roundabout is like any other flowing traffic— don't stop in the middle. • As annoying as it can be to get behind a big slow vehicle, it's even worse to be stuck beside it in a roundabout. Just wait. • Like with intersections, don't change lanes while in the roundabout.

Beaches:

There are a few rules we all need to keep in mind to ensure a safe experience for everyone who comes to Hilton Head. It is therefore very important to remember that there is: • No sleeping on the beach between midnight and 6 a.m. • No driving on the beach • No horses on the beach • No fires on the beach • No fireworks on the beach (you need a permit to set off fireworks anywhere on Hilton Head, and an offense will result in a misdemeanor and a $500 fine) • No pets on the beach between 10 a.m.5 p.m. the Friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day

your Heritage PLAID on TheGet RBC at the RBC HERITAGE Returns

The Heritage Classic Foundation is excited to announce

that the 53rd annual RBC Heritage Presented by Boeing will take place April 12-18, with limited spectators on-site, and strict health and safety protocols in place. Working with officials from the Town of Hilton Head, the State of South Carolina and the PGA TOUR, the Heritage Classic Foundation has developed a tournament plan that includes a limited number of sponsors and fans in open air and socially distanced settings. Health and safety remain the number one priority, and the tournament has implemented a number of new protocols to keep everyone safe during the reimagined event. The fan guide to safety policies for the 2021 event are listed at RBCHeritage.com/COVID19. New COVID-19 safety protocols mean some elements of the tournament have changed. The skyboxes and private hospitality venues that usually surround the golf course will

be replaced with open-air villages and concession areas. Additional health and safety protocols include the mandatory use of facial coverings, social distancing and other health and safety measures. All permanent and temporary structures will have complete daily sanitization. Safety measures regarding food preparation and distribution will also be in place. With fewer tickets available for distribution, the Heritage Classic Foundation will work first with the tournament’s official partners, then open sales to past ticket buyers. For updates on tickets available to the general public, please continue to visit www.rbcheritage.com or Facebook (RBC Heritage) and Twitter (@RBC_Heritage). Given the limited number of spectators that will be able to attend the event, the Heritage Classic Foundation has updated tournament ticket types and pricing. All tickets and passes will be valid for one day only.

A Day on the Water

Photography courtesy of Joyce Harkins, Hilton Head Island Photography, INC.

Life on Hilton Head Island revolves around the water, and few places offer so many opportunities to enjoy this liquid asset. From Broad Creek to the Calibogue Sound, the Intracoastal Waterway to the Atlantic Ocean, freshwater lagoons to brackish backwaters, you’re just moments away from a great day on the water.

Launch & Land

A perfect day on the water begins and ends at any of the Island’s many marinas, which feature an array of watersports, boat rentals, tackle shops, fishing charters and ecotours, as well as signature restaurants, shopping and entertainment. Explore the famous candy-striped Lighthouse in Harbour Town, the Mediterranean charm of Shelter Cove Harbour, the New England-style fishing village of South Beach Marina, the Key West atmosphere of Palmetto Bay Marina 72 Island Events April 2021

and the hidden charms of Broad Creek Marina, Skull Creek Marina and Hilton Head Harbor.

Bike the Beach

Hilton Head Island’s 12 miles of hardpacked, white-sand beaches provide the perfect playground for any age, at any time of year. Rent a beach cruiser to explore the strand at your own pace. Locals know that low tide is the perfect time to ride along the beach, when the sand is flat and hard-packed.

Dolphin Days

Have you ever seen Atlantic bottlenose dolphin in the wild? Don’t miss the chance to take a local dolphin tour, where you’ll see dolphin in their natural habitat and learn about their amazing behavior. A dolphin tour offers a family-friendly way to spend the day out on the water and see these incredible mammals in action.

Reel Fun

Bait your hook and head out for a day hiltonhead.com

of deep sea, inshore or shark fishing with experienced boat captains who know the secret spots. Or drop a line into the nearest lagoon, cast a shrimp net or try surf fishing on the beach to see what you can catch (and release!) this season.

Sail Away

Let the wind fill your sails as you salute the sunset on a happy hour cruise, hail a water taxi to neighboring Daufuskie Island, spend a few hours or all day sightseeing, sign up for sailing lessons or rent a boat to play your way.

Go Wild

A natural setting for adventure, discover the wild side of the Island and the amazing array of animals that call it home. Enjoy a shark-fishing excursion, alligator adventure or bird-watching tour to view the Island’s wild inhabitants.

Paddle Time

Experience the Island’s wildlife up close on a guided kayak or canoe trip through calm tidal creeks and Lowcountry marshlands. Choose from customized family adventures, corporate retreats, team building exercises or camps for kids, tweens and teens. Just don’t forget your camera to capture picture-perfect moments.

Fly High

Get an unforgettable bird’s-eye view of the Lowcountry on a helicopter ride, or spend a few thrilling hours on an aerial adventure. Enjoy a two-hour zipline canopy tour along glistening Broad Creek or an aerial adventure with a high ropes challenge course. Whichever you choose, you’ll get an amazing view of the Island and all its beauty.

“SMART, ELOQUENT ENTERTAINMENT.” – THE NEW YORKER

TONY-AWARD WINNING PLAY OF MARK ROTHKO’S ART & HIS SHADES OF GENIUS!

april 8 – 11

RED, features the portrait of master artist Mark Rothko at the height of his career. Viewed through the lens of his youthful new assistant, Ken, we witness Rothko at the pinnacle of his creativity, but struggling through the creation of a series of large paintings, commissioned as a series intended to feature in New York’s stylish new Four Seasons Restaurant. As Ken and Rothko paint, they challenge each other to ask big questions about art: what it takes to create it and what its role should be in the world. Set in the 1950s, and based on a series of real events, RED is the electrifying story of the ever-changing relationship between an artist and his creations.
