Island Trails Walking Paths

TAKE the time to enjoy these trails

Green’s Shell Enclosure:

The 3-acre Green’s Shell Enclosure Heritage Preserve is an archaeological site dating back to 1335 A.D. This trail is located near the nothern top of Hilton Head Island, just off of Squire Pope Rd.

From the parking area, you will walk on a road to this short, easy trail, which will take you into the past. You will pass a cemetery and cross over a ramp to an overlook at the end of the trail. Green’s Shell Enclosure is a low earthen embankment, two- to sixfeet high, that dates back to the Irene Period of 1300 to 1450 A.D. Covering two acres, this embankment was once a fortified village built by farmers who used shells for everything from tools to objects used for religious rituals.

Stay on the trail and do not remove anything from this preserve. Bring insect repellent during the warm months.

Hours: Dawn to dusk

Directions on Hilton Head Island: From the intersection of US 278 and Squire Pope Rd., turn left into Greens Park. Entrance to the preserve is on the left at the gate. Go around the gate and walk on the road past the cemetery to the entrance ramp.

Jarvis Creek Leisure Loop:

The Leisure Loop at Jarvis Creek Park is an easy .85 mile paved loop. The loop starts behind the restrooms. There’s a small pier at the start of the trail with access to a dock. If you start off counterclockwise, you’ll pass a fitness station to your left.

Pathways extend all over the park and around the lake creating a 1.1 mile loop. Runners, joggers and walkers are all welcome to explore the lakeside paths that extend out into wooded areas. This paved trail is equipped with wooden bridges over marshy areas, so no one has to get their feet too dirty.

There are nine pieces of outdoor training equipment in a peaceful area behind a live oak, and the park was designed with exercising in mind! Each station has a set of instructions that explains how to use the equipment and perform the exercise. You even get a beautiful view of the lake while you’re strengthening your core.

Hours: Dawn to dusk.

Directions: Located off of William Hilton Pkwy.

14 Island Events August 2023 hiltonhead.com
Jarvis Creek Loop

Audubon Newhall Preserve:

The Hilton Head Island Audubon Society owns and operates the Audubon Newhall Preserve, located on Palmetto Bay Rd. It is open to the public at no charge.

The Audubon Newhall Preserve is a series of short, easy walking, interconnected trails through a fifty acre nature preserve. A trail guide is available at the entrance. You will see a wide variety of trees and plants, from Florida scrub to native hardwoods. A feature of the preserve is a rare pocosin (the Indian word for bog), which was once a characteristic feature of barrier islands.

Hours: Dawn to dusk

Directions: From US 278 near the entrance to Hilton Head Island: Turn right onto the Cross Island Parkway. When you reach Palmetto Bay Rd., watch for the Audubon Newhall Preserve sign on the right. From US 278 on the south part of the Island: Drive west to the traffic circle and turn right onto Palmetto Bay Rd. Look for the sign on the left.

Sea Pines Forest Preserve:

An easy walk or ride through a maritime forest and marshland in this protected pre-

serve. The preserve has a 4,000-year-old Indian shell ring, a wild ower meadow with dozens of ower varieties, fresh water lakes suitable for fishing and a bountiful bird habitat.

Shade is plentiful during the summer months. Restrooms, drinking water and a picnic area are available in the center of the preserve at Fish Island.

The land has been sculpted by changing sea levels over the past 15,000 years and traces of the first inhabitants still remain. The Indian Shell Ring is 4,000-years-old and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Length: Approximately 2 miles of walking/hiking nature trails and 6 miles of multi-purpose trails

Fees: There is a (per car) fee to enter Sea Pines Resort.

Directions: From the entrance to Hilton Head Island: Drive on US 278 and turn right onto the Cross Island Parkway. Continue to the traffic circle on Palmetto Bay Rd and turn right onto Greenwood Dr. The Sea Pines' gate is in 0.2 miles and the preserve is 1 mile from the gate on the left.

A Day onthe Water

Life on Hilton Head Island revolves around the water, and few places offer so many opportunities to enjoy this liquid asset. From Broad Creek to the Calibogue Sound, the Intracoastal Waterway to the Atlantic Ocean, freshwater lagoons to brackish backwaters, you’re just moments away from a great day on the water.

Launch & Land

A perfect day on the water begins and ends at any of the Island’s many marinas, which feature an array of watersports, boat rentals, tackle shops, fishing charters and ecotours, as well as signature restaurants, shopping and entertainment. Explore the famous candystriped Lighthouse in Harbour Town, the Mediterranean mood of Shelter Cove Harbour, the New England-style fishing village of South Beach Marina, the Key West feel of Palmetto Bay Marina and the rustic charm of Broad Creek Marina, Skull Creek Marina and Hilton Head Harbor.

Bike the Beach

Hilton Head Island’s 12 miles of hard-packed, white-sand beaches provide the perfect playground for any age, at any time of year. Rent a beach cruiser to explore the strand at your own pace. Locals know that low tide is the perfect time to ride along the beach, when the sand is flat and hardpacked.

Dolphin Days

Have you ever seen Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphin in the wild?

Don’t miss the chance to take a local dolphin tour, where you’ll see dolphin in their natural habitat and learn about their amazing behavior. A dolphin tour offers a familyfriendly way to spend the day out on the water and to see these incredible mammals in action.

Reel Fun

Bait your hook and head out for a day of deep sea, inshore or shark fishing with experienced boat captains who know the secret spots. Or drop a line into the nearest lagoon, cast a shrimp net or try surf fishing on the beach to see what you can catch (and release!) this season.

Sail Away

Let the wind fill your sails as you salute the sunset on a Happy Hour Cruise, hail a water taxi to neighboring Daufuskie Island, spend a few hours or all day sightseeing, sign up for sailing lessons or rent a boat to play your way.

Go Wild

A natural setting for adventure, the Island is home to an amazing array of animals. Enjoy a shark fishing excursion, alligator adventure or bird-watching tour to view the Island’s wild inhabitants.

Paddle Time

Experience the Island’s wildlife up close on a guided kayak or canoe trip through calm tidal creeks and Lowcountry marshlands. Choose from customized family adventures, corporate retreats, team building exercises or camps for kids, tweens and teens. Just don’t forget your camera to capture picture-perfect moments.

Fly High

Get an unforgettable bird’s-eye view of the Lowcountry on a helicopter ride, or spend a few thrilling hours on an aerial adventure. Enjoy a two-hour zipline canopy tour along glistening Broad Creek or an aerial adventure with a high ropes challenge course. Whichever you choose, you’ll get an amazing view of the Island and all its beauty.

• Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flashlight. Bicycles must have a red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night.

• When approaching slower pathway users from behind, please sound your warning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left.

• Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under.

• Make eye contact and use hand signals. Assume other bicyclists and motorists don’t see you. Hand signals tell motorists and other path users what you intend to do and will ensure everyone’s safety on the paths.

• Be courteous, alert and predictable.

• WHITE DIAMONDS INDICATE RESTRICTED TRAVEL LANE: Travel with the flow of traffic.

• WHITE STRIPE & STOP SIGN INDICATE ROAD CROSSING: Stop and look for motorists.

• YELLOW CENTER LINE INDICATES TWO-WAY TRAFFIC: Keep to the right.

• SEVERAL WHITE DIAGONAL STRIPES INDICATE A CROSSWALK: Watch out for other bicyclists, pedestrians and motorists.

• At low tide, the Island’s 12 miles of beaches are ideal for biking. Public beaches are indicated on the Island Events map.

• Our map also shows the existing public pathways. Many kiosks are located along the pathways with an Island-wide map on one side and a localized map of the area on the other.

The Surprising Power of Proper Posture

Over the course of my long career on the green, I have seen many golfers (too many!) quit or play less than they would like due to pain. One student came to me and shared his frustrations that he wasn’t able to play golf with friends and family due to neck pain. Within 15 minutes of watching him play, I was able to diagnose his problem and told him: “your neck pain is from slouching your shoulders to keep your left arm straight.” I then showed him a video of his movements to illustrate what I was seeing. He was stunned. “What can I do?” he asked me. “Easy,” I replied.

I had him take a yellow rubber band and do a series of exercises that activated his muscles around the scapula, which was pulling on his neck and causing the pain. By strengthening these muscles, the stress on his neck gradually decreased and then vanished. His lack of pain made it possible for him to take a higher backswing, giving him better range of motion and distance, plus a faster downswing. He quit slouching, increased his accuracy, and was excited to get back to golf with friends and family, where he was able to show off his new skills.

Even older students with arthritis in their hands or shoulders can practice proper posture to take the workload off the joints. It’s like lifting a heavy object—back straight, elbows close to your ribs. Everything feels lighter and more natural when you are applying the proper technique!

To sum it up, the benefits of correct posture are:

• Increased Confidence

• More Energy

• Greater Self-Esteem and Better Mood

• Easier Breathing

• Reduced Risk of Injury

• Boosted Productivity

• Better Golf Overall!

Yellow-Bellied Pond Sliders

One of the most popular creatures to discover on the H2O Alligator and Wildlife Tour in the Sea Pines Forest Preserve is the Yellow-Bellied Pond Slider Turtle. These iconic Southern reptiles are known for their unmistakable, bright-yellow undersides and are a beautiful reminder of how vibrant and colorful our local wildlife can be.

Yellow-Bellied Pond Sliders are native to the Lowcountry and a vital component of our local ecosystem.

These turtles mainly eat plants, controlling the algae which blooms and grows on the ponds within the Forest Preserve. Yellow-Bellied Pond Sliders also provide a key source of protein for alligators. Although the turtles are not the gator’s main source of food, they do provide a consistent source of protein for these apex predators. Still, turtles and alligators can often be seen basking in the sun together or sharing a log, particularly when temperatures are cooler and sunning is vital for both reptiles to survive.

Capable of living up to 30 years in the wild, Yellow-Bellied Pond Sliders consistently lay eggs throughout the year. This activity allows them to sustain a strong local population which is fundamental to the survival and health of the ecosystem. These turtles are numerous throughout the Sea Pines Forest Preserve and tour patrons stand a very good chance of observing them in their natural environment.

Together, with all the animals that call the Preserve home, Yellow-Bellied Pond Slider Turtles are just another piece of our enchanting ecosystem and one of many organisms that make the Sea Pines Forest Preserve such a unique place to visit on Hilton Head Island.

We hope you will join us on one of our Nature Tours, where you can learn not only about these turtles, but all the animals inhabiting the Sea Pines Forest Preserve.

H2O Sports is a great place to spark curiosity and inspire learning through adventure. For details on water activities, go to www. H2OSports.com.

The Marvelous Manatee

There are few things as glorious as spotting a manatee while out exploring Hilton Head Island’s tidal creeks and rivers.

This roly-poly mammal is so unique in appearance that seeing a paddle tail flip up out of the water, or that signature nose breaking the surface of the water as it grabs a snoot full of air, feels a bit like discovering a rare magical beast.

Manatees are a relatively new addition to our tidal saltmarsh ecosystem, with “Protect Our Manatee” signs posted in marinas within the last few years. While we may be excited about being able to see these creatures without having to travel south, their presencein our environment is, in fact, a strong indicator of climate change. Each year, the temperatures of our local waters climb a little higher in the summer months, making the trip north for more abundant food resources more attractive for the warm water-loving West Indian Manatee.

West Indian Manatees are weirdly wonderful in many ways. Weighing in at 1,000 pounds or more in maturity, they do not have a continuous layer of blubber (like a whale) to keep them warm. When aquatic temperatures drop below 68 degrees, they must seek warmer water to survive. During the winter months, the manatee hangs out primarily in Florida waters. As summer heats up, manatees are now being found as far north as Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

Manatees are not fast swimmers. While capable of speeds up to 20 mph, they generally putter along at around 3 to 5 mph. Due to these slow speeds, algae and barnacles tend to grow on their skin, resulting in a rather unpleasant, odiferous experience. On a positive note, the algae helps protect the manatees from the harmful rays of the sun. Talk about green sunscreen!

Manatees are primarily vegetarians. They spend six to

eight hours a day eating sea grass and other aquatic vegetation. It is this dietary trait — as well as their slow, lumbering mannerisms — that earn them the nickname “sea cow.”

Manatees have no natural predators. Even when a manatee encounters a 12-foot alligator, it will simply nudge the gator out of the way so it can continue on its journey.

Sadly, the manatee’s lack of natural predators has not kept it out of danger. Boat strikes and human intrusion into manatee habitat and feeding environments has driven this species almost to extinction. Even though the state of Florida instituted manatee protection lawsmany years ago, their numbers sunk to the low 4,000s by 2013. Thanks to conservation efforts in Florida and along our Southern coast, manatees were moved to the threatened species list in 2017. However, there is still much work to be done to protect this exotic wonder.

There are simple things that can be done to help protect our local manatee population and to support conservancy. First and foremost, don’t litter and never use plastic bags. Trash in our waterways damages themanatee’s habitat. There are many “adopt-amanatee” programs that can be found online, and these dollars go specifically to support manatee conservation. Report live manatee sightings to the SCDNR at dnr.sc.gov. To report an injured manatee in South Carolina, contact the 24-hour SCDNR hotline at (800) 922-5431.

For more than 30 years, Outside Hilton Head has provided personalized adventures for all ages, from kayak, fishing, nature and dolphin tours to kids’ camps, history excursions, family outings and standup paddleboarding. (843) 686-6996 or outsidehiltonhead.com.

The Big Dogs of Summer

The dog days of summer are here and August is a great month to catch what I call the “Big Dogs.” This trio of tacklebusters, all available near or inshore, offers anglers big game thrills. Two of these fish, the tarpon and the blacktip shark, often weigh over 100 pounds and put on awesome aerial displays.

People usually catch the big blacktip while tarpon fishing or vice versa, making it easy to get two of the three “Big Dogs” in one spot. The third is the jack crevalle, weighing up to 40 pounds. But hold on! These fish fight like 100-pounders. The tenacious jack crevalle often takes much longer to bring to the rod tip than the other two, even though they are twice as big.

Recently, while fishing for Spanish mackerel with light tackle, a huge jack inhaled a live menhaden. The 20-pound test line was no match for this fish and we chased him twoand-a-half miles for just short of two hours. The jack (in the picture) weighed over 35 pounds.

The big jacks offer no aerial displays, but will burn a reel up with long searing runs. Roaming the sound and sandbars in large

packs, they are visible on the surface with their fins sticking up. Anglers then present a fly or a popping lure. Whether on a lure or live bait, top water strikes come swiftly, usually accompanied by an explosion.

The tarpon and blacktip are more often than not fished while on anchor. Chumming helps and live or dead menhaden are effective. It’s good to have an anchor ball ready to pitch when the hookup ensues because there is little time to pull the anchor in. These fish can take hundreds of yards of line in just a few minutes.

August is the time when trophy fish are close to shore. If you’re looking to catch a big one, then get out and go fishing this month!

Don’t miss the Finatic boat, which can accommodate up to 12 passengers and features a special three-hour shark/dolphin eco-tour trip. ARIES Passionate, motivated, and confident, the Aries gets the job done. Where the Ram may be lacking is in patience, and in considering how the ends stack up against the means. This month, give it some thought.

TAURUS An interpersonal dynamic at work may have you feeling bummed out, and it’s okay for you to feel this way! But you may need to consider whether or not this is actually your problem. If you feel like you can do something about it, go for it! If not, put your shield up and let the nonsense bounce right off of it.

GEMINI A friend of yours may need an extra boost this month. If you feel you’re the right person to do the boosting, get creative and get into something that will lift both your spirits. If you feel someone else is better suited to the task, see if you can delegate it. This is still a great way to play a supportive role!

CANCER Ward off the post birthday blues this year and come out of summer with some pep in your step. How? Entirely up to you. Whether it’s a dance class, live music, a movie night, a day alone with your book or an evening on the town, the resulting rejuvenation will be worth it!

LEO There are some storytelling lions out there, Leo, are you one of them? Certainly you have captivated audiences once or twice with a harrowing tale, but have you ever considered further honing this skill? Storytelling is as old as civilization itself, and a good yarn is always in fashion.

LIBRA If you’re feeling a little scattered this month, don’t let it throw off your pristine balance. To offset this energy, try digging into the grounding powers of nature, meditation, yoga or extra journaling. There’s nothing quite like showing up as your most centered self!

SCORPIO You have done amazing work manifesting your dreams lately, Scorpio. Now that you have channeled your energy so effectively, can you spare a moment to reflect? Your next steps may be big ones, so use this month to think carefully about where you would like to go.

SAGITTARIUS You may have had a revelation recently that took you by surprise. Try not to get too bogged down in how you didn’t see it before or the roles of the other players. Instead, focus on what it really means for you. How will you choose to react?

CAPRICORN Your anxiety may be through the roof lately, and it’s getting to be too much. Have you asked yourself how else you might give back? Whether it’s to great friends or mentors, your community, or the planet, truly throwing yourself into good works can lighten even the weightiest spirit.

AQUARIUS A secret you did not ask to be told may be hanging in the air between you and a friend. If you’re fretting about what to do with this information, don’t! It’s a secret, and therefore not meant to go beyond your keeping.

VIRGO Get ready for some excitement this month, Virgo. It may be the end of summer but a lot of things happen in August as people get back to their regularly scheduled programming. Keep an eye out for new opportunities!

PISCES Getting into something new looks really good on you, Pisces! Keep up the good work and enjoy working these new challenges with your mind, body and soul. A sense of balance is available to you.

Designated Swimming Areas: Official swimming areas have been desig-

nated for the Alder Lane, Coligny, Driessen, Folly Field and Islanders Beach Parks. The boundaries will be clearly marked on the beach and in the water. Lifeguards are stationed at these designated areas for assistance and beach information.

Beach Marker Signs:

Hilton Head’s beaches are marked near the dune line with signs to let emergency responders know where assistance is needed. They are also useful as a reference point if you or your group should become lost.

Beach Safety Tips:

•Apply and reapply plenty of sunscreen even on cloudy days.

•Wear sunglasses to prevent damage from the sun.

•Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water.

•Be aware of the rules and regulations of the beach. Signs are posted near most beach accesses.

•Don’t leave your kids unsupervised even in guarded areas.

• Note the location of the nearest lifeguard and report any hazardous conditions to him or her.

•Know the name of the beach or hotel/ condo and the beach marker number where you are staying if you should need assistance.

•There are often jellyfish and stingrays, as well as other sea life in and out of the water, which may sting or cut a person. In any situation where first aid is needed, find a lifeguard or seek further medical attention.

•Call or wave for help if you are in trouble.

Water Safety Tips:

•Don’t enter the water if you can’t swim.

•Swim near a lifeguard.

•Ask the lifeguard about any dangers in the water or on the beach, especially if he or she is flying a yellow caution flag.

•Be aware of direction and strength of longshore currents. These currents can take you up and down the beach quickly and cause you or your kids to get lost.

•Don’t let your kids swim unsupervised even in guarded areas.

•Don’t swim alone. Use the buddy system so that someone always knows where you are so they can get help if needed.

•Don’t overestimate your swimming ability. Stay in chest-deep or less water to insure you don’t get stuck in water over your head.

•Don’t rely on flotation devices.

•Swim parallel to shore if you want to swim long distances.

•Don’t swim against the current. Swim across the current to escape the pull.

•Always swim sober.

• Don’t dive into unknown water or shallow breaking waves. Always go feet first.
