5 Places on Hilton Head for the Nature Lover.

Want an authentic Hilton Head ecological experience? Don't miss out on these 5 must-see spots.

Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge

Pinckney Island, located between Hilton Head Island and Bluffton, SC, attracts over a quarter of a million visitors each year. This easily accessible island offers a range of wildlife-dependent activities, including hiking, biking, and wildlife watching. If you're a fan of fishing, you ll be happy to know that saltwater fishing is permitted in the surrounding waters. And for those interested in hunting, there is an annual one-day deer hunt held in the fall.

The Refuge offers a variety of opportunities to explore and enjoy the great outdoors from sunrise to sunset. You can hike, bicycle, observe wildlife, take pictures or go saltwater fishing.

Pinckney Island is a crucial stop along the Atlantic Flyway for thousands of migratory birds each year. This sanctuary is not only a haven for these feathered travelers, but also serves as a rookery for colonial wading birds like ibis, egrets, and herons. In addition to protecting birds and other wildlife from disturbance, a "no dogs" policy is in place. www.fws.gov/refuge/pinckney-island.

Jarvis Creek Park

Located off William Hilton Parkway on Jarvis Creek Road, this 53-acre park includes a large pond and one-mile walking trail around the lake and workout stations. The lakeside paths extend out into wooded areas. The paved trail is equipped with wooden bridges over marshy areas.

There is abundant wildlife along this short and paved adventure. Be mindful of allgators lounging on the banks of the lake and watch these amazing creatures from a safe distance. This is a great trail for birding and offers solitude during quieter times of day. The trail is open year-round and is beautiful to visit anytime. Dogs are welcome. www. hiltonheadislandsc.gov/parks/JarvisCreek

Audubon Newhall Preserve

The Audubon Newhall Preserve is a 50-acre nature preserve located on the south end of the Island that is owned and operated by the Hilton Head Island Audubon Society.

Come explore the beautiful Audubon Newhall Preserve, a 50-acre nature sanctuary located on Hilton Head Island. Managed by

Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge
Jarvis Creek Park

the Hilton Head Island Audubon Society, a non profit organi ation, this preserve is dedicated to protecting the native forest ecosystem and providing a space for recreational and educational activities.

With a network of interconnected trails totaling about a mile, visitors can easily navigate and enjoy the natural surroundings. Whether you're an avid hiker or just looking for a leisurely stroll, the Preserve offers something for everyone.

Open daily from sunrise to sunset, the Preserve welcomes visitors of all abilities. The wide paths and boardwalk are accessible for those with mobility challenges, and there are benches along the way for rest or observation. Be sure to check out the observation deck, where you can view the diverse wildlife that lives here.

Even furry friends are welcome at the preserve, as long as they're leashed. Please clean up after your pets to help maintain the pristine environment. www.hiltonheadaudubon. org/audubon-newhall-preserve

Majestic Honey Horn

The sprawling, majestic Grounds and Gardens are a beckoningly beautiful location adorned with acres of exploratory trails and oral designs throughout the property.

Starting at the Discovery House, a mile-long nature trail winds past some of the oldest

structures on Hilton Head Island. Three wooden boardwalks extend into the Jarvis reek salt marsh, while fact filled interpretive panels guide you. They offer information about our salt marshes and how Gullah Native Islanders relied on this rich ecosystem for food and commerce.

In the summer you will be enchanted by the region s only native butter y enclosure and experience the life cycle of local butteries. In the winter you will fall in love with the Camellia Garden, which has over 130 different varieties in bloom from November to April. www.coastaldiscovery.org

ARIES You’re in for good luck and opportunities this August, Aries! This is especially true on the home front, whether fixing up that spare room or healing a relationship. The Town of Hilton Head Island provides nearly 60 miles of public pathways and nature trails for the enjoyment of pedestrians and cyclists.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ON THE PATHS:

• Obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws.

• Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users.

• Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles.

• Do not ride on roads when a pathway is available.

• Ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists.

• WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you.

RECREATIONAL PATHWAYS GUIDE

• Yield to pedestrians. When resting or stopped, please move off the pathway.

• Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flashlight. Bicycles must have a red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night.

• When approaching slower pathway users from behind, please sound your warning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left.

• Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under.

• Make eye contact and use hand signals. Assume other bicyclists and motorists don’t see you. Hand signals tell motorists and other path users what you intend to do and will ensure everyone’s safety on the paths.

• Be courteous, alert and predictable.

• WHITE DIAMONDS INDICATE RESTRICTED TRAVEL LANE: Travel with the flow of traffic.

• WHITE STRIPE & STOP SIGN INDICATE ROAD CROSSING: Stop and look for motorists.

• YELLOW CENTER LINE INDICATES TWO-WAY TRAFFIC: Keep to the right.

• SEVERAL WHITE DIAGONAL STRIPES INDICATE A CROSSWALK: Watch out for other bicyclists, pedestrians and motorists.

• At low tide, the Island’s 12 miles of beaches are ideal for biking. Public beaches are indicated on the Island Events map.

• Our map also shows the existing public pathways. Many kiosks are located along the pathways with an Island-wide map on one side and a localized map of the area on the other.

SEA TURTLE Nesting Season

Hilton Head, South Carolina is a prime destination for summer tourists, not just for its picturesque beaches, but also for its sig nificant role in sea turtle conservation. The Island is a nesting ground for four different species of sea turtles, which are part of the area’s rich biodiversity and are protected by various conservation efforts.

Organizations like Sea Turtle Patrol HHI are dedicated to monitoring sea turtle nesting and hatching activity, providing a safe environment for these turtles to continue their life cycle. The conservation work on Hilton Head serves as a testament to South Carolina’s commitment to protecting its natural wildlife, ensuring that the sea turtles have a secure place to call home for generations to come.

There are seven varietal species of sea turtles that inhabit every ocean around the world. They are some of the largest reptiles and have been found in fossil records dating back to 210 million years ago. They differ from fresh water turtles by having flippers instead of feet. Their entire lives are spent in the salt water, other than when females come ashore to lay their eggs. Sea turtles can be found in the South Carolina waters from April to November and lay nests on our beaches from May to October. As of July 5th 2024, there are 158 documented nests that contain a total of 9,380 eggs on Hilton Head beaches. Nests begin to hatch

the second week of July, with babies crawling from the nest and back out to the ocean.

The most common nesting sea turtles in our area are Loggerhead Sea Turtles. They can weigh up to 300 pounds and have an oval shaped dark reddishbrown carapace (shell). They were named the state reptile of South Carolina in 1988. Other species that nest on HIlton Head, but are rare, are the Kemp’s Ridley, Leatherback and Green Sea Turtles. Kemp’s Ridleys are the smallest and rarest of all sea turtles with a round grayish-black carapace. Green Sea Turtle juveniles can be seen in the inshore and nearshore waters where they forage for plants. Leatherback Sea Turtles are the largest turtles, in maturity weighing up to 1,300 pounds, they enjoy snacking on jellyfish in our warm coastal waters from the spring to the fall.

All four species of sea turtles in South Carolina are protected by the Endangered Species Act which was established in 1973. The Department of Natural Resources is the governing body, responsible for the protection and management of sea turtles in South Carolina. They began documenting nests in the late 1970s and monitor over 300 kilometers of ocean facing sandy beaches in the state. They work with other local agencies on a daily basis during nesting season to document sea turtle behaviors and nests. All information gathered by the volunteers is publicly accessible on www.SeaTurtle.org. You can find nesting statistics by beach and can even track individual nests. We can all share in the conservation of the sea turtles by not disturbing their nesting process and following proper safety procedures on the beach. For more information, visit www.seaturtlepatrolhhi.org.

10 Tips FORBETTER Golf

Perfect your game this summer on Hilton Head Island.

August is a great month to work on your golf swing and to refine your approach toward this challenging, rewarding sport. Here are 10 things to keep in mind to help you make the most of your game:

1 Golf is a leisure sport. Be leisurely and take your time. Relaxed muscles move faster than slow muscles. When do we play golf? When we need to relax after a busy week, or on weekends and trips to Hilton Head Island.

2 The golf swing is a fluid motion that propels the ball into the air. Just as water flows peacefully and powerfully down the river, so too does the golf swing combine fluidity and power. When golfers trust this motion, they are amazed how far the ball goes.

3 When you swing slow, the ball goes fast. How does this work? When all the parts of the body work correctly and in sequence, the sensation is of slow, graceful motion. The end result is incredible clubhead speed from centrifugal force and other physics principles.

4 Big muscles, not little muscles, are key. Golf is life and lifting. When you lift a heavy object, you use your legs and core. As a result, the heavy object will feel light. Lift the same object with only your arms, and it will feel heavy. The same idea applies to the golf swing.

5 The lower body leads the way. The golf swing is much like pickleball, tennis and baseball. Move your feet first in the athletic motion, and the upper body will not be strained or vulnerable to injury.

6

Let gravity help you. Gravity is powerful and invisible. Do this test: stand tall, extend your arms relaxed to waist height and let them free fall to the sides of your legs. How much force do you feel? Now, lift your arms above your shoulders and let them free fall to the sides of your legs. Is there more force?

7

Build your game from the hole to the tee to find victory. Golf legend Jack Nicklaus made this statement famous: If you learn to putt correctly, then chipping is easy. Then, chip-

ping correctly makes pitching easy. Excellent pitching makes the full swing easy to learn.

8

Less is more. This principle is hard to learn, but it applies to every area of golf and life. When the golfer lets physics do the work, the golf swing is similar to breathing. Yes, you can learn to do this. It will allow you to play golf for life.

9

Golf is a game for a lifetime. Therefore, learn the fundamentals. Musician Elton John arrived at college as an excellent self-taught pianist. He played several classics that impressed his professors. However, he was required to learn the fundamentals of posture, finger position and footwork. This expanded his playing abilities, which ultimately set him free to go on to the mastery of the piano.

10

Focus on the action, not the end result. Mark McGwire, the homerun hitter, shared with me that many of the 583 home runs he hit he did not, in fact, try to hit. His goal was to hit it solid. When the ball met the sweet spot, he found extraordinary distance.

Enjoy every moment on the golf course this month. I hope to see you out on the green!

Chasing A Monster Jack

unless you have a few hours to spare.

Be careful what you wish for!

It was another glorious day of fishing at the nearshore reef. My companions and I were enjoying ourselves, catching bluefish, summer trout and blackfish on light tackle.

“Whoa!” cried the youngest of us, and he shot up in his seat. Just a second later, the small Fin Nor spinning reel started screaming, the line disappearing fast off the spool.

“Anchor up!” I yelled before I’d even had a chance to think about it. In just a few more seconds, the couple hundred yards of braid were almost gone and we were giving chase, the angler in the bow struggling to maintain a standing position as we leapt across the waves, his lanky arms frantically reeling in any line he could retrieve.

Hours passed. The seesaw tussle continued and there was little for the rest of us to do but behold the angler’s struggle with this enormous creature. When he was finally able to maneuver the fish nearer the surface, we were able to ID the culprit, a powerful predator to be sure: the Jack Crevalle. True to form, he was nowhere near giving up.

The Jack Crevalle is a fairly common fish in our waters, and they are usually plentiful in summer. These big bruisers, typically between 20 and 40 lbs., are often seen in big schools cruising the surface. They are fast-moving and, frankly, a little spooky, so one must be stealthy when sight fishing. Either live bait or artificials will get the job done, but they must be placed in front of the school, far enough out to not spook the fish, as the school often swims as erratically as it does fast. Personally, I highly recommend medium to heavy tackle for these bulldog battlers,

The angler groaned as the line disappeared again, the large jack digging in to make another blistering run. We were now in overtime.

“We need a plan,” I said. Within a few moments, we had it. We would work the fish back to the surface, at which point we would use a billfish tactic, charge him using the boat, and grab the leader.

Our first two tries fell flat, but served as good practice runs. The third time was indeed the charm, and we boated a 37-lb. Jack Crevalle. After snapping a few pics, we released the fatigued fellow. After a fight like that one, it’s hard to say who was more relieved — the newly freed jack or the exhausted angler!
