WELCOME TO

Hilton Head Island!

D

ecember’s crisp but mild winter temperatures make this a wonderful time of year to indulge in the delights of the season, explore the Island’s many miles of trails on foot or by bike, do some lastminute Christmas shopping at local boutiques, spend quality time as a family and get away from the world awhile. Our bootshaped barrier Island truly has something for everyone, and we think you’ll agree that there’s no place quite like it.

Island Winery’s Georgene Mortimer discusses the American tradition of apple spirits and veteran fisherman Capt. Miles Altman contemplates the gift of a lifetime: being taught to appreciate the wonders of the natural world.

Each holiday season, Hilton Head Island hosts an array of festivities and cultural happenings. Take a look at our Calendar of Events to get a sense of what’s happening in December on the Island.

Connecting you with Hilton Head’s awardwinning delights is what we do best and we want to make sure that you don’t miss a thing! For even more on the treasures of the Lowcountry, visit hiltonhead.com, hiltonheadisland.com, bluffton.com, savannah.com, stsimonsisland.com and beaufort.com. You can also view all of our “priceless” publications online anytime and anywhere.

This month in Island Events, our expert columnists are at it again: telling the Island’s tales, dispensing great insider tips and keeping us in the know. In this issue, Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy’s premier instructor, Doug Weaver, tells us what the golfers in our lives want for Christmas,

We’re so pleased that you chose Hilton Head, and we wish you smooth sailing, high adventure and unforgettable moments with those you love. From all of us here at Island Events, we send you warm wishes for the happiest of holidays and a season that is both merry and bright.

ing,” which is the process of freezing fermented cider and then removing the ice to get a highly concentrated liquor. In those times, this sort of distillation was done outside in winter, and resulted in some foultasting flavors and a harsh, rugged product that contained both methanol and ethanol. Nowadays, commercially available apple brandy or applejack is distilled, barrel-aged and sometimes filtered through charcoal to produce a smooth and delicious aperitif.

As

American as Apple Wine?

By Georgene Mortimer, Island Winery

L

uckily for us, upstate South Carolina abounds with all kinds of apple varieties. There are Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, Gala, Mutsu, Ozark Golden, Granny Smith, Arkansas Black, Rome Beauty, Yates, Fuji, Winesap and Supreme Gold (to name a few!) in locally made apple cider, baked into delicious pies or available at your nearby farm stand. And while it’s apple pie that has come to symbolize our nation, apple spirits have their place in Americana too! We’ve all heard about the legendary Johnny Appleseed, of course, whose many years planting seeds in the early 1800s established orchards throughout the American Midwest. His trees yielded small, tart apples (that we would not consider edible), used to make hard cider and applejack, each of which had their parts to play in early American history. Naturally fermented cider or “hard cider” was, by far, the most popular drink of the Colonial Era. It was a practical drink, as apple trees grew easily in the colonies and drinking water sources were often tainted with harmful bacteria. Hard cider had an alcohol level high enough to stave off bad bacteria, but low enough to not “cloud the mind.” Because hard cider was so ubiquitous then, most apple trees planted during those times were for drinking rather than eating. Applejack, also very popular in the Colonial Era and in production here since 1698, had its own place in American history. Its name comes from the term “jack14 Island Events December 2020

Finally, apple wine is an American spirit that remains popular today. And though it’s sometimes used interchangeably with hard cider, there are important differences in their production. Hard cider is made from a simple fermentation of apple cider brought on by the addition of yeast. It is bottled early to preserve its bubbles, so in many ways it is similar to beer: fizzy with a low alcohol content (about 6%). When making apple wine, extra sugar is added to the apple juice during the fermentation process. That additional sugar converts to alcohol, thus raising the alcohol content to between 10% and 12%. Apple wine is then aged for a short time before it is bottled and put on the market, with the finished product resembling a white wine. At Island Winery, we take fresh cider, add sugar and allow it to ferment. When the wine has aged for a few months, we add a hint of cinnamon and a touch of sugar to produce our rich and classic Apple Cinnamon Wine. Delicious! The perfect bottle of handcrafted artisan wine awaits at Island Winery on Cardinal Rd. Wine by the glass, cheese platters and tastings are available Monday-Saturday from 12:30-5:30 p.m. and Sunday from 12-4 p.m. (843) 842-3141 or www.islandwinery.com. hiltonhead.com

ISLAND QUILTERS

Binding Together the OLD and the NEW By Dani Ray

I

f you look closely enough, it is possible to spot a silver lining now and then in the fabric of 2020. One such bright side seems to be that with people staying closer to home, sewing has seen a real revival. It’s a tradition rich with the details of the time — quilters in the American Colonies sometimes used paper from letters, newspapers and catalogue clippings for practical and aesthetic reasons, making the era’s quilts some of its most compelling source material. Quilting is also one of history’s best examples of “upcycling,” as it’s often done using scraps, cuttings and older pieces in the creation of new ones. And while today’s quilters can trace a line directly back to the hand-sewn masterpieces of Medieval times, quilted garments are thought to have existed as far back as Ancient Egypt’s First Dynasty! So what does Island Quilters, Hilton Head’s one and only quilting shop, have to add to the long thread of conversation about the art of quilting? “Perhaps that something that has been around this long is still such a fresh, dynamic and challenging activity,” says owner Beth Hanlon-Ridder. “I designed Island Quilters to reflect this. We are not your grandmother’s quilting shop!” Island Quilters’ contemporary aesthetic has not gone unnoticed. Visitors note how well-organized and refreshing the space is, while raving about its varied and eyecatching selection, with the latest from Kaffe Fassett, Free Spirit, Moda, Northcott, Riley 24 Island Events December 2020

Blake, Hoffman and more. “Island Quilters is the happiest shop on the Island! It is jampacked with fabrics and ideas that just make you smile. There’s always something at the ‘Demo’ table to talk about and great samples to get your creativity soaring.” HanlonRidder has also designed many of her own batiks, which are made from an Indonesian technique of wax-resist dyeing applied to cloth. These bright, cheerful fabrics are exclusive to Island Quilters, and celebrate life in the Lowcountry with some of its most iconic symbols — the dolphin and sea turtle, lighthouses, palms and golf clubs. “I created dozens of samples, highlighting ways to use them. There are aprons, placemats, table-runners, wall-hangings, quilts and more!” She adds, “For me, it’s a way to express my creativity. Plus, quilting and sewing mend the soul.” To ensure everyone's safety, masks are required inside the store. They frequently clean and sanitize all surfaces, process payments with cards only, and limit the number of guests in the store to four at a time. Island Quilters is located in the Park Plaza Shopping Center right next to the UPS store. It is open Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. It also offers a wide variety of products online! “Sweet in EVERY Sense” A Piece of Paradise at Kilwins By Dani Ray

I

n 1947, just two years after the end of World War II, a new chocolatier arrived on the scene to deliver highquality, comforting confections and friendly service to a nation that had been through a lot. More than 70 years later, walking into a Kilwins is still food for the soul. The first thing you notice is the intoxicating aroma of crisp, freshly made waffle cones, followed by a dazzling array of treats wrapped in glittering cellophane. Next, you may perceive how cheery the atmosphere is, and that patrons at the ice cream counter are given all the time they need to make the all-important flavor determinations that will set them on the path to their perfect scoop. Kilwins’ soft, rich ice cream begins with fresh milk and cream from family farms, and is prepared first as a premium base in small, Kosher-certified batches. To make the “The Perfect” Apple Pie, the premium base is joined by vanilla, cinnamon caramel swirls, baked apple pieces and sugared pie crust chunks. “It’s just my favorite,” says Max Wilhoit, the General Manager of the Kilwins at Shelter Cove. “Everyone should give it a try!” Other popular flavors include the Sea Salt Caramel (a creamy, vanillaflavored concoction with swirls of salted caramel and chocolatecovered caramel candy), the Toasted Coconut and the New Orleans Praline Pecan. These first-class confections are then carefully frozen in custom tubs

26 Island Events December 2020

and shipped exclusively on Kilwins’ own carefully controlled refrigerated trucks. Kilwins’ commitment to excellence shows in its reviews, which are sprinkled with adjectives like bouncy, cloud-like, rich and creamy. Visitors detail the fast, friendly, helpful and respectful service. They mention the hand-dipped caramel apples, all manner of treats dipped in chocolate, the pralines and the original recipe Mackinac Island fudge. It is hand-paddled and then left cooling right in front of you (clever!). Also, in a season when piping hot drinks are the ticket, there’s Kilwins’ traditional hot chocolate, a festive party of chocolate shavings, fluffy whipped cream and homemade marshmallows. No matter the season, Kilwins has its complement. “Anyway,” asks Wilhoit with a grin, “what beach trip is complete without goodies?” Kilwins takes customer and employee safety very seriously and has enacted a number of measures to ensure a safe but enjoyable customer experience, including: contactless ordering, socially distanced dining tables, floors marked for indoor foot traffic, face masks for staff and hand sanitizer available to all. It is also limiting the number of people in the store at one time to six. Hilton Head’s Kilwins is located in the beautiful Shelter Cove Towne Centre across from Francesca’s and around the corner from Belk. It is open Sunday through Thursday from 1-9 p.m. and Friday/Saturday from 1-9:30 p.m. Kilwins Hilton Head - Shelter Cove 28 Shelter Cove Ln, Unit 112-B (843) 785-2727 www.kilwins.com hiltonhead.com

nated for the Alder Lane, Coligny, Driessen, Folly Field and Islanders Beach Parks. The boundaries will be clearly marked on the beach and in the water. Lifeguards are stationed at these designated areas for assistance and beach information.

Beach Marker Signs:

Hilton Head’s beaches are marked near the dune line with signs to let emergency responders know where assistance is needed. They are also useful as a reference point if you or your group should become lost.

Beach Safety Tips: • Apply and reapply plenty of sunscreen even on cloudy days. • Wear sunglasses to prevent damage from the sun. • Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water. • Be aware of the rules and regulations of the beach. Signs are posted near most beach accesses. • Don’t leave your kids unsupervised even in guarded areas. • Note the location of the nearest lifeguard and report any hazardous conditions to him or her. • Know the name of the beach or hotel/ condo and the beach marker number where you are staying if you should need assistance. • There are often jellyfish and stingrays, as well as other sea life in and out of the water, which may sting or cut a person. In any situation where first aid is needed, find a lifeguard or seek further medical attention. • Call or wave for help if you are in trouble. hiltonhead.com

Water Safety Tips: • Don’t enter the water if you can’t swim. • Swim near a lifeguard. • Ask the lifeguard about any dangers in the water or on the beach, especially if he or she is flying a yellow caution flag. • Be aware of direction and strength of longshore currents. These currents can take you up and down the beach quickly and cause you or your kids to get lost. • Don’t let your kids swim unsupervised even in guarded areas. • Don’t swim alone. Use the buddy system so that someone always knows where you are so they can get help if needed. • Don’t overestimate your swimming ability. Stay in chest-deep or less water to insure you don’t get stuck in water over your head. • Don’t rely on flotation devices. • Swim parallel to shore if you want to swim long distances. • Don’t swim against the current. Swim across the current to escape the pull. • Always swim sober. • Don’t dive into unknown water or shallow breaking waves. Always go feet first.

Beach Prohibitions: The following are prohibited on all beaches: – Possession or consumption of alcohol – Glass (bottles, containers, etc.) – Littering – Indecent exposure or nudity – Disorderly conduct – Disturbing the peace – Unauthorized vehicles – Fires and fireworks – Shark fishing – Horseback riding or motorized driving – Removal, harming or harassment of any hiltonhead.com

RECREATIONAL PATHWAYS GUIDE The Town of Hilton Head Island provides nearly 60 miles of public pathways and nature trails for the enjoyment of pedestrians and cyclists.

RULES FOR THE ROAD: • Please obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws. • Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users. • Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles. • Please do not ride on roads when a pathway is available. • Please ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists. • WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you. • Please yield to pedestrians. When resting or stopped, please move off the pathway.

• Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flashlight. Bicycles must have a red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night. • When approaching slower pathway users from behind, please sound your warning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left. • Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under. • Make eye contact and use hand signals. Assume other bicyclists and motorists don’t see you. Hand signals tell motorists and other path users what you intend to do and will ensure everyone’s safe enjoyment of the paths. Be courteous, alert and predictable.

WHAT to KNOW

on sland I d a e ilton H

H

Alcohol:

Drinking/possession of alcohol on Hilton Head's public beaches is illegal and could result in a fine of up to $500. Liquor stores are not open on Sundays in South Carolina, though you can buy wine and beer in some gas stations and supermarkets.

Roundabouts:

You might as well learn to love South Carolina’s roundabouts. They’re everywhere! There are just a few rules to follow in the two-lane roundabout: • The drivers already in the roundabout have the right of way. • Always yield to them before entering the roundabout. • A roundabout is like any other flowing traffic — don’t stop in the middle. • As annoying as it can be to get behind a big slow vehicle, it’s even worse to be stuck beside it in a roundabout. Just wait. • Like with intersections, don’t change lanes while in the roundabout.

Beaches:

There are a few rules we all need to keep in mind to ensure a safe experience for everyone who comes to Hilton Head. It is therefore very important to remember that there is: • No sleeping on the beach between midnight and 6 a.m. • No driving on the beach • No horses on the beach • No fires on the beach • No fireworks on the beach (you need a permit to set off fireworks anywhere on Hilton Head, and an offense will result in a misdemeanor and a $500 fine) • No pets on the beach between 10 a.m.5 p.m. the Friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day

HOROSCOPE December 2020 ARIES Every life needs both certainty and uncertainty. The high heights of adventure are best when there is solid ground to land on. The Ram has a tendency to blaze ahead, but this month, work a little extra to build upon the “certainties” in your world.

LIBRA Winter is coming, Libra. Of course we all love Christmas, but this season isn’t always easy. Are you ready for it? Fully stocked with plush house slippers, fragrant teas or proper long johns? This month, don’t be dampened by gray skies. Instead, lend them some of your sparkle.

TAURUS Sometimes, even when we get what we want, we act like jerks instead of expressing gratitude. Has something fallen into your lap of late that you should be grateful for? Celebrate it! Also, be sure to thank those that helped you achieve it.

SCORPIO Someone in your life radiates idealism, and it triggers you to tamp down the resulting enthusiasm. Why is that? No, the ideas are not super realistic. Yes, they drive you crazy. But the world needs people who can keep smiling. Don’t be on the side that quashes them.

GEMINI You’ve been eyeing a language lately. Whether it’s a foreign language, ASL, a better acquaintance with your own native tongue, a speaking or writing class, go for it! Working your brain in this way will widen your thinking and invigorate your life!

SAGITTARIUS Have you ever considered that every man-made thing around you is the result of someone’s ideas and design, hopes and dreams manifested in the physical realm? Working to make our dreams reality is one of the most fundamental markers of being human. Don’t let being “busy” keep you from it.

CANCER We don’t all grow in the same way, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t moving forward. Bananas grow against gravity, which gives them their distinctive shape. Don’t despair if you can’t decipher the path of someone you love. Instead, love unconditionally and be supportive if you can. LEO Your way of keeping all the plates aloft amidst a heavy mental load is to rattle off what you need done. But all of us are walking around with agendas and plans of our own, and can feel thrown off by constant marching orders. You’d hate it — so lay off a bit! VIRGO Independence is so highly prized in our society that we can prioritize it over our own well-being. This month, consider taking friends or family up on their offers to lend a hand. With help, what might you be able to accomplish that is currently impossible? 44 Island Events December 2020

CAPRICORN Are you making an effort to encourage and empower the people you see every day? Imagine that each has an attention bucket and a power bucket, and then drop something positive into each when you can. It will come back to you tenfold! AQUARIUS Our devices put the world at our fingertips, but they can also drain us. And it’s rare that they draw our awe, wonder and delight, which our inner child needs to survive. Don’t allow yourself to be co-opted by tech — get your head out of your phone! PISCES This month, you will need a little extra time for yourself. If you plan for it now, it will be easier to manage and allow for more of the therapeutic benefits. Don’t be afraid to indulge yourself, as you will need your stamina for the future! hiltonhead.com

Presents to Remember

Giving the Gift of a Love for the Wild By Captain Miles Altman, Bay Runner Fishing Charters ’Tis the season to contemplate the gifts we have received in our lives, and how they’ve impacted us. Over the years I’ve given a lot of thought to the best gift I was ever given: the time and energy of the people who took me outside and introduced me to nature. The first person to invest time in me was a tiny Japanese lady by the name of Jeannie. She was married to my Dad’s best friend, and we lived in the orbit of the military base in Puerto Rico where he and my Dad were stationed. I was around seven when she put me to the task of gathering a sack full of hermit crabs, as plentiful in Puerto Rico, as fiddlers are here in the Lowcountry. Jeannie took me by the hand and led me to the Navy pier, where she pulled out a hammer. She then proceeded to crack the crab shells, exposing the tail that it uses to anchor itself to its crustaceous outer layer. Turns out, the hermit crab’s tail is caviar to fish! Soon, we were cranking in fish left and right. That memory remains as vivid to me as the blue-green waters off Puerto Rico’s Caribbean coast. Fast forward six years, when another outdoorsman entered my life, embracing the role of dad as if I were his own blood. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and he soon had me out on the banks of the Columbia River, fishing and catching steelhead and trout. There was ritual to it: the gathering of the rods and tackle boxes in anticipation of a foray into the wild. It was euphoric. Blessed now with children myself, I have tried to pass on my awe and appreciation of the wonders of nature to them. My son Caleb,18, has finally come full stride in his passion. This past summer, he was up at 5:30 every morning to assume the role of first mate, never missing a trip. His aspiration to be an NBA star has dimmed, while 46 Island Events December 2020

his passion for marine biology burns bright in his eyes. My little Sarah, 12, also has many trips under her belt. She can tell you every fish she has ever caught, and while it’s not a long list, she is not lacking in enthusiasm! Some of my all-time favorite charter trips involved youngsters who had never fished before. Watching the fire ignite with their first catch is intoxicating, and I feel very privileged to be there for those moments. In a time dominated by devices, getting young ones in touch with glittering waves, a warm sun and a bent rod is fantastic, and one of the best things we can do for them. This Christmas, Caleb wants to go to Florida to catch his first sailfish. We do have them here in the Lowcountry, but they are some sixty miles offshore. The December cold fronts rolling through Southern Florida bring them within a mile of the shore there. Personally, I can’t think of a better gift than to indulge his adventurous spirit. Merry Christmas and God Bless! Capt. Miles Altman of Bayrunner Fishing Charters has more than 42 years of experience fishing the waters surrounding Hilton Head Island. Don’t miss the Finatic boat, which features a special 3-hour shark/ dolphin eco-tour trip. To The Golfer In Your Life! 5 Great Gift Ideas for Christmas By Doug Weaver, Director of Instruction, Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy

excellent selections of Travis Mathews, Peter Millar, Adidas and Straight Down. Also, their classy accessory selection makes shopping for stocking stuffers easy!

1. A prepaid round (or rounds!) of golf.

4. A playing lesson.

2. Golf lessons.

5. Gift card for all of the above.

The three Palmetto Dunes Resort Golf Courses have hosted tournaments that included some of golf’s biggest names, like Davis Love III, Tiger Woods and Phil Michelson. The 17th hole of the Arthur Hills Course at Palmetto Hall is short but challenging, and the 390-yard dogleg left Par 4 will test even the pros. Tiger tried to do it in one shot, and even he scored an eight! It is well known that golf is a game of opposites — that’s why it’s so hard to teach yourself to play! A lesson with an effective instructor can go a long way toward fewer putts, longer drives and lower scores. Let a digital swing analysis diagnose and develop your technique, and tell you something about your swing that you didn’t know. Palmetto Dunes’ PGA Class-A coaches teach beginners, collegiate golfers and everyone in between, and offer private and group lessons. Gift certificates with flexible timing are also available.

3. Golf shirts.

Palmetto Dunes’ three Pro Shops have 48 Island Events December 2020

HILTON HEAD HISTORY

Hilton Head Island has a long and rich history of visitors. 1520s

Thousands of Years Ago Native Americans came to hunt and fish.

1663 Captain William Hilton sailed the British ship Adventure north from Barbados, scouting lands to grow sugar cane for the crown. Approaching the Island by way of Port Royal Sound, he encountered a sliver of land and called it “Hilton's Headland.”

1861-1865 The Civil War brought big changes to Hilton Head Island. At the onset of the conflict, the South erected Fort Walker to protect the port. When the fort fell, tens of thousands of Union troops, prisoners, missionaries, shopkeepers and enslaved men and women seeking asylum flooded the Island. Suddenly humming with activity, Hilton Head became instrumental in the North's blockade of nearby Southern ports. In 1863, the town of Mitchelville became the first self-governed town for freed men and women.

Late 1950s

Developer and environmentalist Charles E. Fraser began work on the Island’s first resort, which he called Sea Pines. Fraser is sometimes called the father of the modern resort, and his vision for the Island was progressive, even by modern standards. His determination that no building be “higher than the tallest tree,” as well as his rejection of flashy neon signs, became central to the Island's distinctive character. 50 Island Events December 2020

Conquistadors explored the area.

17th, 18th & 19th Centuries For many years, few permanent residents made their home on Hilton Head Island. Though the humid, subtropical climate was ideal for growing agricultural crops like cotton and rice, fear of disease and isolation kept antebellum plantation owners on the mainland. Africans worked the plantations, and their unique blend of African and European traditions gave birth to the Gullah culture, which survives even today.

Post Civil War - 1956 After the Civil War, the Island's population dropped to around 3,000, and by 1940, it had fallen to just over 1,000. Electricity finally came to the Island in 1950 and, six years later, Hilton Head’s very first bridge to the mainland made the area significantly more accessible.

Today Fraser's legacy lives on in Hilton Head Island’s balance of commerce with green spaces, golf courses with wild places and thoroughfares with biking trails. Recently voted the Best Island in the U.S. by Travel and Leisure readers for the third time, this family-friendly sea island seamlessly combines luxury, adventure and charm -- all in one unforgettable destination. hiltonhead.com
