Welcome to Hilton Head Island!

Crisp but mild temperatures make December a perfect time of year to indulge in the delights of the holiday season on Hilton Head. Here, you can do some last-minute (local!) Christmas shopping, spend quality family time indoors or outdoors, explore the Island in a variety of ways or just enjoy a complete change of scenery. There’s no place quite like Hilton Head, and we think you’ll agree that there’s something here for every kind of wanderer.

To keep tabs on the holiday events you won’t want to miss, head to December’s “Highlights” and our Calendar of Events. Then, be sure to read all about vacationing safely on Hilton Head! We have Dos and don’ts for interacting with Island wildlife, navigation tips for Hilton Head’s roads and paths, a guide to our many parks and beaches, and a list of all your options for a day out on the water, plus curated Dining, Shopping, and Activities listings. And, explore even more of the Lowcountry and the Coastal Empire at hiltonhead.com, hiltonheadisland.com, bluffton.com, savannah.com, stsimonsisland.com and beaufort.com.

In this month’s issue, we hear from Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy’s Doug Weaver, who shares tips on the perfect gift for your favorite golfer and Capt. Miles Altman of Bayrunner Charters, who writes about winter fishing for speckled trout. We also explore the cura tive properties of salt with Pure Salt Studios and discover a new twist on a very old art with Island Quilters.

We’re humbled and delighted that you have chosen Hilton Head; may your days here be merry and bright! From all of us here at Island Events, Happy Holidays.

Island Quilters

The fabric of society has seen a lot of changes in the last few years, but if you look closely enough, it’s possible to spot a silver lining now and then. One such bright side seems to be that sewing has seen a real revival, lately. It’s a tradition rich with the details of the time—quilters in the American Colonies sometimes used paper from letters, newspapers and catalog clippings for practical and aesthetic reasons, making the era’s quilts some of its most compelling source material. Quilting is also one of history’s best examples of “upcycling,” as it’s often done using scraps, cuttings and older pieces in the creation of new ones. And while today’s quilters can trace a line directly back to the hand-sewn masterpieces of Medieval times, quilted garments are thought to have existed as far back as Ancient Egypt’s First Dynasty!

So what does Island Quilters, Hilton Head’s one and only quilting shop, have to add to the long thread of conversation about the art of quilting? “Perhaps that something that has been around this long is still such a fresh, dynamic and challenging activity,” says owner Beth Hanlon-Ridder. “I designed Island

uilters to reflect this. We are not your grandmother’s quilting shop!”

FLAVORS

FROM THE

Now in its seventh year as the only fabric store on Hilton Head, Island Quilters has continued to grow, cre ate, and inspire. And its contemporary aesthetic has not gone unnoticed. Visitors note how well-organized and refreshing the space is while raving about its varied and eye-catching selection, with the latest from Kaffe Fassett, Free Spirit, Moda, Northcott, Riley Blake, Hoffman, and more. “Island Quilters is the happiest shop on the Island!” Beth says. “It is jam-packed with fabrics and ideas that just make you smile. There’s always something at the ‘Demo’ table to talk about and great samples to get your creativity soaring.”

Four years ago, Beth designed a line of batik fabrics just for Hilton Head, which she made using an Indonesian technique of wax-resist dyeing applied to cloth. These bright, cheerful fabrics are exclusive to Island Quilters, and celebrate life in the Lowcountry with some of its most iconic symbols: the dolphin and sea turtle, lighthouses, palms and golf clubs. We are now recoloring our fifth shipment of these beautiful fabrics,” she says. And, she adds, We are also known for our beautiful kits and samples. My staff and I personally curate our many Half-Yard Bundles, which are easy to pick up and sew into beautiful heirloom pieces. For me, it’s a way to express my creativity,” Beth enthuses. “Plus, quilting and sewing mend the soul.”

Island Quilters is located in the Park Plaza Shopping Center right next to the UPS store. It is open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. It also offers a wide variety of products online!

EXALTING IN SALT

Did you know that Europeans have been visiting salt caves for their therapeutic benefits since the th century? ane Austen’s contemporaries in the early s e tolled the virtues of the air in the seaside destination of Bath, claiming it eased all sorts of conditions common at that time. ven th century salt miners in Poland were found to be robustly healthy and unusually free of the common colds and coughs that afflicted their peers.

But the evidence that salt heals is not merely anecdotal. Salt is mucoactive, antibacterial, anti fungal, anti allergic, anti inflammatory, and boosts immunity. Studies have shown that healing with salt (halotherapy) can help with respiratory conditions like COPD, asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia, sinusitis, tonsillitis, and can even help treat breathing problems stemming from C ID . Halotherapy also repairs skin cells and protects them from aging and infection, and can help fight off acne, eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, and other skin conditions.

So how does it work? It’s really a fascinating process,” says Lisa Colver, owner of Pure Salt Studios. In our temperature and humidity controlled salt room, a special machine called a halogenerator measures, delivers, and monitors the e act size and concentration of the micro-salt particles. These tiny salt particles enter the respiratory tract and begin to absorb the to ins and allergens

residing there, resulting in less mucus and inflammation. You can’t see or feel it, but when you lick your lips you can taste it.” The salt room is also just a gorgeous space — all four walls are constructed by handmade Himalayan salt bricks, and the floor is Himalayan salt. r, you can sit back, rela and breathe on heated massage chairs for 45 minutes. This tranquil, spa-like setting is a truly unique e perience, rooted in history and science.

And there’s more! Pure Salt Studios also offers sound healing, private yoga, massage and a state-of-the-art infrared sauna (great for rela ation, deto , skin health, and weight loss . HOROSCOPE

ARIES We like to make a big deal about how the New Year is a chance to start with a blank slate. But really, each day is another oppor tunity to be the best version of yourself. This month, consider what changes you might like to make in your life, and then work to implement them whenever you can. Don’t wait!

TAURUS You may have a surprising addition to your life just around the bend. No matter how you see it (as positive or negative), remind yourself that rolling with the punches is all you can really do.

GEMINI You have some fun up your sleeve this month, and why shouldn’t you? ‘Tis the season to be jolly. This month, the name of the game will be staying ahead of things so you can just enjoy it all.

CANCER We tend to think of wellness as a destination. More accurately, it’s a process. Ask yourself what wellness looks like to you. How would prioritizing it change your day-to-day life? This month, think on it.

LEO You may be searching for answers more than usual this month. When you’re really stuck, you may be tempted to ask others. A more productive tack might be to choose a friend who makes a good sounding board and then listen to yourself talk through your questions.

VIRGO Where is your head these days? If you’re feeling like you’re all over the place, it’s not just you. This month, as you wander around your abode with your morning cup, consider where in the house you feel most grounded, and then lean into that space.

LIBRA You’re not the only one feeling jealousy over other people’s trips. We all are. But when has there ever been a travel experience as perfect as what you “see” on social media? Stop with the comparisons. You have the power to plan a trip that is perfect for you. Do it.

SCORPIO If you still haven’t found a routine that works for your lifestyle, you may need to do some reverse engineering. After all, it’s got to be well-suited to you if it’s going to work! This month, get into it and see what you can come up with.

SAGITTARIUS You may have some items on your list that are doing an endless loop in your mind. This is your brain doing what it does best, holding on to the things you need. As soon as you complete that task, the cloud will be gone. Just do it, already!

CAPRICORN You have a wish dear to your heart that you’ve not spoken to anyone. Why is that? Are you afraid of judgment? That someone will laugh at you? Sometimes we need to say things aloud just to hear them. Consider who you might confide in that will help you understand your want.

AQUARIUS This month you may discover some of the secrets of those who are happiest during the holidays. How can you co-opt some of this energy and enthusiasm for yourself?

PISCES You may need a tech break, friend. Even those of us who aren’t glued to computers all day are probably getting way more screen time than we need. You don’t even know how destructive it can be until you’re sitting out in nature recovering from it! Cut back this month if you can.

Island Trails Walking Paths

Green’s Shell Enclosure:

The 3-acre Green’s Shell Enclosure Heritage Preserve is an archaeological site dating back to 1335 A.D. This trail is located near the nothern top of Hilton Head Island, just off of Squire Pope Rd.

From the parking area, you will walk on a road to this short, easy trail, which will take you into the past. You will pass a cemetery and cross over a ramp to an overlook at the end of the trail. Green’s Shell Enclosure is a low earthen embankment, two- to sixfeet high, that dates back to the Irene Period of 1300 to 1450 A.D. Covering two acres, this embankment was once a fortified village built by farmers who used shells for everything from tools to objects used for religious rituals.

Stay on the trail and do not remove anything from this preserve. Bring insect repellent during the warm months.

Hours: Dawn to dusk

Directions on Hilton Head Island: From the intersec tion of US 278 and Squire Pope Rd., turn left into Greens Park. Entrance to the preserve is on the left at the gate. Go around the gate and walk on the road past the cemetery to the entrance ramp.

Jarvis Creek Leisure Loop:

The Leisure Loop at Jarvis Creek Park is an easy .85 mile paved loop. The loop starts behind the restrooms. There’s a small pier at the start of the trail with access to a dock. If you start off counterclockwise, you’ll pass a fitness station to your left.

Pathways extend all over the park and around the lake creating a 1.1 mile loop. Runners, joggers and walkers are all welcome to explore the lakeside paths that extend out into wood ed areas. This paved trail is equipped with wooden bridges over marshy areas, so no one has to get their feet too dirty.

There are nine pieces of outdoor training equip ment in a peaceful area behind a live oak, and the park was designed with exercising in mind! Each station has a set of instruc tions that explains how to use the equipment and perform the exercise. You even get a beautiful view of the lake while you’re strengthening your core.

Hours: Dawn to dusk.

Directions: Located off of William Hilton Pkwy.

A feature of the preserve is a rare pocosin (the Indian word for bog), which was once a characteristic feature of barrier islands.

Hours: Dawn to dusk

Directions: From US 278 near the entrance to Hilton Head Island: Turn right onto the Cross Island Parkway. When you reach Pal metto Bay Rd., watch for the Audubon Newhall Preserve sign on the right. Shade is plentiful during the summer months. Restrooms, drinking water and a picnic area are avail able in the center of the preserve at Fish Island.

The land has been sculpted by changing sea levels over the past 15,000 years and traces of the first in habitants still remain. The Indian Shell Ring is 4,000-years-old and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Length: Approximately 2 miles of walking/hik ing nature trails and 6 miles of multi-purpose trails

Fees: There is a (per car) fee to enter Sea Pines Resort.

The Town of Hilton Head Island provides nearly 60 miles of public pathways and nature trails for the enjoyment of pedestrians and cyclists.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ON THE PATHS:

• Obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws.

• Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users.

• Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles.

• Do not ride on roads when a pathway is available.

• Ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists.

• WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you.

RECREATIONAL PATHWAYS GUIDE

• Yield to pedestrians. When resting or stopped, please move off the pathway.

• Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flashlight. Bicycles must have a red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night.

• When approaching slower pathway users from behind, please sound your warning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left.

• Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under.

• Make eye contact and use hand signals. Assume other bicyclists and motorists don’t see you. Hand signals tell motorists and other path users what you intend to do and will ensure everyone’s safety on the paths.

• Be courteous, alert and predictable.

• WHITE DIAMONDS INDICATE RESTRICTED TRAVEL LANE: Travel with the flow of traffic.

• WHITE STRIPE & STOP SIGN INDICATE ROAD CROSSING: Stop and look for motorists.

• YELLOW CENTER LINE INDICATES TWO-WAY TRAFFIC: Keep to the right.

• SEVERAL WHITE DIAGONAL STRIPES INDICATE A CROSSWALK: Watch out for other bicyclists, pedestrians and motorists.

• At low tide, the Island’s 12 miles of beaches are ideal for biking. Public beach es are indicated on the Island Events map.

• Our map also shows the existing public pathways. Many kiosks are located along the pathways with an Island-wide map on one side and a localized map of the area on the other.

The Adaptable Opossum

In 1608, Captain John Smith named a small marsupial after the Algonquian term “Opossum” meaning “white animal.” Growing up in the Southern states, most kids know what it means to “play possum.” Opossums actually do roll over on their backs and let their body go limp, playing dead to evade predators or other threats.

The opossum, also known as Didelphis virginiana, is America’s only native marsupial. These creatures can be found throughout most of the U.S., from the Great Plains to the Atlantic Coast, and from Ontario to Mexico. Opossums were introduced into California since they are not found west of the Rockies.

Their fur is greyish white all over, with black tips on the nose, tail and ears. They have coarse hair covering their entire body except for their tail. The tail is well developed for grasping while opossums climb. They also have 5 fingers on their hands and feet, including an opposable thumb on their rear feet. They can weigh between 4 and 7 pounds and may be as tall as eight inches. They usually live to be between two and four years old.

Opossums are thought to be the most adaptable animal in the United States. They are opportunistic omnivores, allowing for a wide variety of food. They are also highly adaptable to many different types of living environments. Opossums are found throughout South Carolina’s residential, woodland and farmland areas. They do not make their own dens, but will commonly take over abandoned ones. They will make nests inside burrows, tree cavities, old squirrel nests, brush piles, garages, attics and even under homes.

These well-adapted animals are also known to eat many different types of insects, small reptiles, small mammals, fruits and vegetables. They scavenge for food in garbage cans, com post piles and in roads.

Opossums are polygamous animals, breeding from January to August. Females will have up to two litters in a season, with each litter producing between seven and 11 young. Females go through a 13-day gestation period. The young will then crawl out of the womb and into a pouch on the female’s stomach, where they attach themselves to a nipple within the pouch and nurse for up to seven weeks. After 80 days, the young will leave the pouch and may be seen riding on their mother’s back. The young will be weaned from their mother after 100 days and travel into the world on their own.

Opossums are nomadic creatures with a home range of up to 50 acres. They are mostly nocturnal, but can be seen for aging during the day as well. Opossums do not hibernate during the winter months and will tend to stay inside of a den or burrow until the weather permits them to forage again.

When it comes to survival, opossums put up a good fight. They are almost immune to rabies and are resistant to rattle snake, cotton mouth and other pit viper venom. However, they are highly susceptible to preda tion from larger animals. They also suffer from a number of different types of internal and external parasites. Humans are allowed to hunt opossum in the state of South Carolina for their fur or meat. However, most local hunters find them a nuisance as opposed to a resource.

A Day on Daufuskie

Discover Art, Culture, History and Natural Beauty

Daufuskie is one of the last truly unique places in America. While I will try my best to describe it here, it’s impossible to do it justice. No mat ter how much you hear about the island, you will be surprised when you visit for the first time. To get the most enjoyment out of your Daufuskie experience, follow these simple tips:

Disconnect

Daufuskie Island is only accessible by water. It is situated between Hilton Head Island and Savannah. As you boat over to the island, either with a private tour or on a ferry ride, turn off your phone, set up your “out of office” email autoresponder and give up any expectation of communication with the outside world. Cell service is spotty and things often do not go as planned (see tip below). Use this opportunity to relax and engage with the experience.

Expect the Unexpected

There is one blacktop road on Daufuskie Island, the rest of the roads and paths are paved with Daufuskie dust. This magical dust permeates everything on the island and, among other things, it causes mechanical breakdowns. Things don’t go as planned, but that is another one of Daufuskie’s charms.

Get Artsy

Daufuskie is home to several incredible artists. They embrace the experience of disconnect ing from the mainland and concentrating on their work. Don’t miss The Iron Fish Gallery, home of metalsmith Chase Allen. Chase’s

of nautical themes, depicted through his skill ful metalwork. Silver Dew Pottery is another must-visit destination. Lancy and Emily make high quality, artistic pottery that is both func tional and beautiful.

Stop and Smell the Flowers

The trails, woods and beaches of Daufuskie boast a wild, chaotic beauty. Any area that isn’t constantly maintained will soon be run over with vines, shrubs, trees and grasses. These places offer a glimpse into how Hilton Head was 50 years ago. A visit to the beach is an absolute must!

Feel the Magic

Of all its great features, the best part of Daufuskie is definitely the people. Never pass up the opportunity to chat with a local. The Island has a long history of interesting events, residents and visitors. Many Daufuskie stories feature supernatural forces, superstitions and hexes. For more in-depth information on the Island’s history, historical sites and local legends, visit the Daufuskie History Museum.

There are several options for visiting Daufuskie Island

For a quality, fully guided boat and golf cart tour of the Island, call Tour Daufuskie at (843) 842-9449. If you prefer a more independent experience, take the Daufuskie Island Ferry from the Bluffton Oyster Factory Dock to Freeport Marina and rent a golf cart.

Drinking/possession of alcohol on Hilton Head’s public beaches is illegal and could result in a fine of up to $500.

Liquor stores are not open on Sundays in South Carolina, though you can buy wine and beer in some gas stations and supermarkets.

You might as well learn to love South Carolina’s roundabouts. They’re everywhere! There are just a few rules to follow in the two-lane roundabout:

• The drivers already in the roundabout have the right of way.

• Always yield to them before entering the roundabout.

• A roundabout is like any other flowing traffic—don’t stop in the middle.

• As annoying as it can be to get behind a big slow vehicle, it’s even worse to be stuck beside it in a roundabout. Just wait.

•Like with intersections, don’t change lanes while in the roundabout.

There are a few rules we all need to keep in mind to ensure a safe experience for everyone who comes to Hilton Head. It is therefore very important to remember that there is:

•No sleeping on the beach between midnight and 6 a.m.

•No driving on the beach

•No horses on the beach

•No fires on the beach

•No fireworks on the beach (you need a permit to set off fireworks anywhere on Hilton Head, and an offense will result in a misdemeanor and a $500 fine)

•No pets on the beach between 10 a.m.-5 p.m. the Friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day

Reeling in Specks

Winter offers some

best fishing of the year on Hilton Head Island.

spots, the sleek specks average a pound or two, but fish in the three to five pound range are not uncommon. These bigger fish, often called “gators,” will literally take the rod out of your hand if you’re not careful.

As I said earlier, the sea trout strike is anything but gentle. To ensure the prey doesn’t get away, trout are armed with a set of fangs that are quite impressive.

In the summer, charter fishing clients frequently ask, “What do you do around here in the winter? Is there anything to fish for then?”

These questions always brings a smile to my face because – as all resident anglers know –winter on Hilton Head Island offers some of the best fishing of the year. Cooler weather brings cooler water temperatures, and the murky summer water turns a clear green. It’s time to put away the big nets and heavier tackle and break out the light rods and artificials. It’s trout time!

Speckled or spotted sea trout – known locally as “specks” – are here year round, but not in the numbers found at this time of year. (Maybe they are here in abundance throughout the year, and the cooler water brings out a voracious appetite. Like a lot of things related to fishing, I don’t always try to figure it out. It just is.)

There are days this time of year that every cast results in a rod-jarring strike followed by a spir ited battle with lots of top water head shaking. Reeling in specks offers a lively, rewarding adventure.

Silvery iridescent and covered with black

So, how do you catch local sea trout? Hard plastic swimming baits like Mirrorlures are productive, but more often than not I prefer the soft plastic tails on a quarter-ounce jig head. There are many varieties and colors, pad dle tails, screw tails and just plain straight tails. When fished properly, all can bring success.

A growing number of companies are incorpo rating scent into plastic lures. Gulp and DOA are some of the better-known brands and have proven their fish-attracting properties for some time now. One of my favorite colors is aptly named the Christmas Tree, which fits right in with the spirit of the holidays celebrated during trout season.

While everyone else is decorating and shopping, I’m tossing the Christmas Tree at specks. If the hustle and bustle of the holiday season is getting to you, give me a call and I’ll put you on some of best fishing the Lowcountry has to offer!

3 Golf Gift Ideas for CHRISTMAS

Gift giving is wonderful but it can also be tricky! You have a swarm of ideas but will need to pick a direction. Have you considered what to get for the golfer in your life? This is both easy and difficult, as golf is truly not just a game, it’s a lifestyle. This year, consider the following:

Experience.

Did you know that you can prepay for rounds of golf? It’s true! You can make a tee time and pay for it or you can purchase a gift card that will allow the golfer to set their own tee time.

Development.

Having a firm grip on the fundamentals makes golf much more fun and a lot less frustrating. And who better to learn from than a pro? Give the gift of an Improvement Program or a les son with a PGA professional! The recipient will learn proper mechanical techniques, strategies that lead to increased success, and ultimately will develop greater confidence and a deeper love for the game. Another way to really drill down on what’s happening in your golfer’s game is to gift them time at South Carolina’s premiere TopTracer range. Here, the latest in golf technology tracks and analyzes ball flight

and takes some of the guesswork out of the improvement process. All weather fun, dining options and var ied entertainment make this a great option for any golfer.

Mementos.

Palmetto Dunes’ quality logoed apparel isn’t just about representing brands like Peter Miller, Straight Down or TravisMathews. It’s a physical rep resentation of time spent playing the world’s greatest game on one of the world’s most beautiful Islands. And golfers will always need shirts and hats they can play in!

If you’re having trouble making a decision, call and talk to a golf professional at Palmetto Dunes. We’ll be happy to walk you through all the options and help you find that perfect something for the golfer in your life!

Carolina’s PGA Teacher of the Year, Doug Weaver is the Director of Instruction at the Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy. He conducts “Where Does the Power Come From?” a free interactive clinic and demonstration every Monday from 4-5 p.m. at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Course. Volunteer for a free lesson and some will win prizes! Call 866-455-6890 or go to www.palmettodunes.com for more information.

HILTON HEAD HISTORY

Captain William Hilton sailed the British ship Adventure north from Barbados, scouting lands to grow sugar cane for the crown. Approaching the Island by way of Port Royal Sound, he encountered a sliver of land and called it “Hilton’s Headland.”

Native Americans came to hunt and fish.

Thousands of Years Ago 1520s 1663

17th, 18th & 19th Centuries

Conquistadors explored the area.

For many years, few permanent residents made their home on Hilton Head Island. Though the humid, subtropical climate was ideal for growing agricultural crops like cotton and rice, fear of disease and isolation kept antebellum plan tation owners on the mainland. Africans worked the plantations, and their unique blend of African and European traditions gave birth to the Gullah culture, which survives even today.

Hilton Head Island has a long and rich history of visitors.

The Civil War brought big changes to Hilton Head Island. At the onset of the conflict, the South erected Fort Walker to protect the port. When the fort fell, tens of thousands of Union troops, prisoners, mis sionaries, shopkeepers and enslaved men and women seeking asylum flooded the Island. Suddenly humming with activity, Hilton Head became instrumental in the North’s blockade of nearby Southern ports. In 1863, the town of Mitchelville became the first self-governed town for freed men and women.

Developer and environmentalist Charles E. Fraser began work on the Island’s first resort, which he called Sea Pines. Fraser is sometimes called the father of the modern resort, and his vision for the Island was progressive, even by modern standards. His determination that no building be “higher than the tallest tree,” as well as his rejection of flashy neon signs, became central to the Island’s distinctive character.

1861-1865 Post Civil War1956 Late 1950s Today

After the Civil War, the Island’s population dropped to around 3,000, and by 1940, it had fallen to just over 1,000. Electricity finally came to the Island in 1950 and, six years later, Hilton Head’s very first bridge to the mainland made the area significantly more accessible.

Fraser’s legacy lives on in Hilton Head Island’s balance of commerce with green spaces, golf courses with wild places and thoroughfares with biking trails. Recently voted the Best Island in the U.S. by Travel and Leisure readers for the fifth time, this familyfriendly Sea Island seamlessly combines luxury, adventure and charm – all in one unforgettable destination.

nated for the Alder Lane, Coligny, Driessen, Folly Field and Islanders Beach Parks. The boundaries will be clearly marked on the beach and in the water. Lifeguards are stationed at these designated areas for assistance and beach information.

Beach Marker Signs:

Hilton Head’s beaches are marked near the dune line with signs to let emergency responders know where assistance is needed. They are also useful as a refer ence point if you or your group should become lost.

Beach Safety Tips:

•Apply and reapply plenty of sunscreen even on cloudy days.

•Wear sunglasses to prevent damage from the sun.

•Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water.

•Be aware of the rules and regulations of the beach. Signs are posted near most beach accesses.

•Don’t leave your kids unsupervised even in guarded areas.

• Note the location of the nearest lifeguard and report any hazardous conditions to him or her.

•Know the name of the beach or hotel/ condo and the beach marker number where you are staying if you should need assistance.

•There are often jellyfish and stingrays, as well as other sea life in and out of the water, which may sting or cut a person. In any situation where first aid is needed, find a lifeguard or seek further medical attention.

•Call or wave for help if you are in trouble.

56 Island Events December 2022 hiltonhead.com

Water Safety Tips:

•Don’t enter the water if you can’t swim.

•Swim near a lifeguard.

•Ask the lifeguard about any dangers in the water or on the beach, especially if he or she is flying a yellow caution flag.

•Be aware of direction and strength of longshore currents. These currents can take you up and down the beach quickly and cause you or your kids to get lost.

•Don’t let your kids swim unsupervised even in guarded areas.

•Don’t swim alone. Use the buddy system so that someone always knows where you are so they can get help if needed.

•Don’t overestimate your swimming ability. Stay in chest-deep or less water to insure you don’t get stuck in water over your head.

•Don’t rely on flotation devices.

•Swim parallel to shore if you want to swim long distances.

•Don’t swim against the current. Swim across the current to escape the pull.

•Always swim sober.

• Don’t dive into unknown water or shallow breaking waves. Always go feet first.
