Together they turn the farmhouse into a fabulous inn with dazzling performances to celebrate each holiday, and of course, a “White Christmas.”

Island Trails Walking Paths TAKE the time to enjoy these trails Green’s Shell Enclosure: The 3-acre Green’s Shell Enclosure Heritage Preserve is an archaeological site dating back to 1335 A.D. This trail is located near the nothern top of Hilton Head Island, just off of Squire Pope Rd. From the parking area, you will walk on a road to this short, easy trail, which will take you into the past. You will pass a cemetery and cross over a ramp to an overlook at the end of the trail. Green’s Shell Enclosure is a low earthen embankment, two- to sixfeet high, that dates back to the Irene Period of 1300 to 1450 A.D. Covering two acres, this embankment was once a fortified village built by farmers who used shells for everything from tools to objects used for religious rituals. 30 Island Events December 2023

Stay on the trail and do not remove anything from this preserve. Bring insect repellent during the warm months. Pathways extend all over the park and around the lake creating a 1.1 mile loop. Runners, joggers and walkers are all welcome to explore the lakeside paths that extend out into wooded areas. This paved trail is equipped with wooden bridges over marshy areas, so no one has to get their feet too dirty. There are nine pieces of outdoor training equipment in a peaceful area behind a live oak, and the park was designed with exercising in mind! Each station has a set of instructions that explains how to use the equipment and perform the exercise. You even get a beautiful view of the lake while you’re strengthening your core. RECREATIONAL PATHWAYS GUIDE • Yield to pedestrians. When resting or stopped, please move off the pathway. • Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flashlight. Bicycles must have a red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night. • When approaching slower pathway users from behind, please sound your warning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left. • Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under. The Town of Hilton Head Island provides nearly 60 miles of public pathways and nature trails for the enjoyment of pedestrians and cyclists.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ON THE PATHS: • Obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws. • Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users. • Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles. • Do not ride on roads when a pathway is available. • Ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists. • WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you. 32 Island Events December 2023

• Make eye contact and use hand signals. Assume other bicyclists and motorists don’t see you. Hand signals tell motorists and other path users what you intend to do and will ensure everyone’s safety on the paths. • Be courteous, alert and predictable. • WHITE DIAMONDS INDICATE RESTRICTED TRAVEL LANE: Travel with the flow of traffic. • WHITE STRIPE & STOP SIGN INDICATE ROAD CROSSING: Stop and look for motorists. • YELLOW CENTER LINE INDICATES TWO-WAY TRAFFIC: Keep to the right. • SEVERAL WHITE DIAGONAL STRIPES INDICATE A CROSSWALK: Watch out for other bicyclists, pedestrians and motorists. • At low tide, the Island’s 12 miles of beaches are ideal for biking. Public beaches are indicated on the Island Events map. • Our map also shows the existing public pathways. Many kiosks are located along the pathways with an Island-wide map on one side and a localized map of the area on the other. hiltonhead.com

HILTON HEAD HISTORY Hilton Head Island has a long and rich history of visitors. Captain William Hilton sailed the British ship Adventure north from Barbados, scouting lands to grow sugar cane for the crown. Approaching the Island by way of Port Royal Sound, he encountered a sliver of land and called it “Hilton’s Headland.” Native Americans came to hunt and fish.

Thousands of Years Ago

1520s

Conquistadors explored the area.

34 Island Events December 2023

1663

17th, 18th & 19th Centuries

For many years, few permanent residents made their home on Hilton Head Island. Though the humid, subtropical climate was ideal for growing agricultural crops like cotton and rice, fear of disease and isolation kept antebellum plantation owners on the mainland. Africans worked the plantations, and their unique blend of African and European traditions gave birth to the Gullah culture, which survives even today. hiltonhead.com

19th s

The Civil War brought big changes to Hilton Head Island. At the onset of the conflict, the South erected Fort Walker to protect the port. When the fort fell, tens of thousands of Union troops, prisoners, missionaries, shopkeepers and enslaved men and women seeking asylum flooded the Island. Suddenly humming with activity, Hilton Head became instrumental in the North’s blockade of nearby Southern ports. In 1863, the town of Mitchelville became the first self-governed town for freed men and women.

1861-1865

Post Civil War1956

Developer and environmentalist Charles E. Fraser began work on the Island’s first resort, which he called Sea Pines. Fraser is sometimes called the father of the modern resort, and his vision for the Island was progressive, even by modern standards. His determination that no building be “higher than the tallest tree,” as well as his rejection of flashy neon signs, became central to the Island’s distinctive character.

Late 1950s

Today

After the Civil War, the Island’s population dropped to around 3,000, and by 1940, it had fallen to just over 1,000. Electricity finally came to the Island in 1950 and, six years later, Hilton Head’s very first bridge to the mainland made the area significantly more accessible. Fraser’s legacy lives on in Hilton Head Island’s balance of commerce with green spaces, golf courses with wild places and thoroughfares with biking trails. Recently voted the Best Island in the U.S. by Travel and Leisure readers for the fifth time, this familyfriendly Sea Island seamlessly combines luxury, adventure and charm – all in one unforgettable destination. hiltonhead.com

WILD WINTER It’s a wild world out there! Whether you choose to explore Hilton Head Island by land, sea or air, here is a guide to just a few of the creatures you might encounter on your next adventure.

AMERICAN ALLIGATOR

HABITAT: Freshwater SIZE: Grow up to 15 feet long and weigh up to 1,000 pounds. LIFESPAN: Up to 50 years. DIET: An apex predator that will eat anything, alive or dead, it can get its jaws around. LOCAL LORE:

Hilton Head Island abounds with tales about its history and more. By Anneliza Itkor Live in the Lowcountry long enough and you'll hear some wonderful tales surrounding our history and environment. Some of these stories have been told for so many generations that the fiction has become fact. This holiday season, treat visiting family and friends to some entertaining local lore.

1. Spanish Moss

Clinging to the craggy branches of live oaks and blowing in the breeze, Spanish Moss seems to be the very definition of the South. Neither Spanish nor a moss, this plant draws all the nutrition and water it needs from the air, and is in no way parasitic or harmful to the trees over which it is draped. Its name can be traced back to early settlers who called it Spanish Moss to poke fun at the Spanish Conquistadors and their scraggly gray beards. The most intriguing story surrounding Spanish Moss links the plant to the very first automobile recall. As the story goes, Henry Ford had the brilliant idea of stuffing the seats of the Model T with soft, fluffy, inexpensive Spanish Moss. Unfortunately, he didn’t take into account that, while the plant itself is not a parasite, it is home to a tiny parasite known as the chigger. As the Spanish Moss in the seats dried out, these parasites began to relocate to the drivers of the vehicles, forcing a recall to replace the ill-conceived stuffing. 42 Island Events December 2023

2. Pluff Mud

Most everyone who lives on Hilton Head Island is familiar with our odiferous pluff mud. However, they may not be familiar with how it came to earn its unusual name. Centuries ago, it was discovered that when the organically rich mud was dried and ground, it made an excellent soil supplement for farming. At that time, it was dubbed “plough mud.” Enter into the equation the local Gullah community and its beautiful onomatopoetic language. Local Gullah residents took the term “plough mud” and transitioned it into “pluff mud,” because that is the noise it makes when one steps into it.

3. Charles Fraser's Statue

And finally, one of the Island’s favorite attractions is the whimsical statue of the dapper man walking with an alligator, located at Compass Rose Park. There are a couple of fun stories to be told here. The statue itself replicates the 1962 photograph snapped of Sea Pines developer Charles Fraser walking alongside the legendary gator, Albert. This photo, published in the Saturday Evening Post, is said to have put Hilton Head Island on the map. Want to hear more charming tales? A Christmas Catch

One cold, earlymorning fishing trip stirs powerful memories.

By Miles Altman, Bay Runner Fishing Charters

T

he cold north breeze caressed the tips of the spartina marsh grass as the glow that was the promise of sunrise appeared on the horizon. “It’s too cold,” complained the two shivering youth, a son and nephew. The night before, they had been excited about the promise of an early Christmas morning present: a fishing trip. The tide nipped at the bottom of the spartina and covered the oyster bed as the man cast a soft plastic lure across the creek. Slowly retrieving the lure with an occasional twitch of the rod, he had barely hit the midpoint of the creek when a jarring strike produced a spirited battle on the light spinning rod. As he flipped the trout in the boat, he looked at the pair, with their hands under their arms. “Too cold?” he asked. He laughed as they complained about how they could see their breath. As he hooked another fish, the sting of the cold flooded his mind with memories. Memories of hundreds of sunrises in the duck blind, all glorious and spectacular in their own way, painted with a master’s brush. The whine of the impatient retriever, the brush of wings in the dim predawn light, as ducks circled decoys and answered the duck call with eagerness, filled his mind as his hands stung from the cold. He flipped another trout into the boat. “Too cold?” he asked again. “Yes!” they replied in unison, as they shivered. 50 Island Events December 2023

Again, his mind took him to cold memories, this time to southern Florida when a blustery northeast wind clashed with the northbound Gulfstream waters, creating six-foot waves complete with whitecaps. The hull of the boat bashed against the waves as strong gusts of Arctic air turned his face, only to see hordes of hungry sailfish tailing down sea. Memories of multiple hookups of the acrobatic billfish, sometimes four at a time, with waves crashing over the transom, brought a smile to his face. Yes, too cold, he thought, as the memories warmed him and another crashing strike from a trout bent his rod double. “Let’s go home!” the young ones pleaded as he boated the trout. This fish may have suffered a glancing blow from a dolphin in its younger days, as its backbone was deformed near the tail. Maybe it was born that way, the man reflected. Maybe that fish is as broken as he was. Maybe it deserved mercy and saving as he did. A tear formed in his eye as he looked upward, face into the rising sun. He whispered, “Thank you. Happy birthday,” as he released the trout. “Let’s go home” he said to the youth. Merry Christmas to all and God bless. Capt. Miles Altman of Bay Runner Fishing Charters has more than 42 years experience fishing the waters surrounding Hilton Head Island. The Fin-atic boat can accommodate up to 12 passengers. The GIFT of GOLF

8 Ideas for the Golfer in Your Life

By Doug Weaver, Director of Instruction Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy

L

ooking for something special for the golfer in your life? Here are eight gift ideas from the Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy that will bring joy, confidence, togetherness and gratification from the lifetime game of golf.

1. Kids’ Private golf lessons —

3-years-old and up learn to be competent and confident and have proper etiquette. We utilize songs and videos, and they learn to imitate the best golfers.

2. Ladies’ Private lessons —

Private lessons in the practice facility where she learns to relax, to be healthier and more effective on the course. Her confidence will bloom and she’ll enjoy golfing more with her friends.

3. Men’s Private lessons —

Golf can frustrate even the most confident and successful man. This lesson is all about time in the practice facility to stamp down anxiety when expectations don’t meet reality. A private lesson can pinpoint where his game needs help and refreshes his love for golf.

4. Playing lessons —

Time with a professional ON THE COURSE can unlock a frustrated golfer. We have a holistic approach to the game allowing the environment and simple fundamentals to revitalize the students’ golf game. 52 Island Events December 2023

5. Video swing analysis —

Our technology will show you the details of your golf game and areas we can work to fix.

6. Putting lessons —

Jack Nicklaus said if you learn to putt correctly your driver will improve and your wallet will be full. Let us help your short game.

7. Mental Golf Workshop —

Golf is a game of opposites… The harder you try, the worse you do. When you swing down, the ball goes up. We’ll help you learn how the best players think and focus.

8. Short game lessons —

Between 100-yards and the green is where everyone can lower their score and increase their smile. The wedges are where the scoring happens. Give your golfer the ability to score lower and they will be happy all year. Golf clubs are provided for all lessons. North Carolina and South Carolina PGA Teacher of the Year, Doug Weaver is the Director of Instruction at the Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy. He conducts “Where Does the Power Come From?” a free interactive clinic and demonstration every Monday from 4-5 p.m. at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Course. nated for the Alder Lane, Coligny, Driessen, Folly Field and Islanders Beach Parks. The boundaries will be clearly marked on the beach and in the water. Lifeguards are stationed at these designated areas for assistance and beach information.

Beach Marker Signs:

Hilton Head’s beaches are marked near the dune line with signs to let emergency responders know where assistance is needed. They are also useful as a reference point if you or your group should become lost.

Beach Safety Tips:

• Apply and reapply plenty of sunscreen even on cloudy days. • Wear sunglasses to prevent damage from the sun. • Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water. • Be aware of the rules and regulations of the beach. Signs are posted near most beach accesses. • Don’t leave your kids unsupervised even in guarded areas. • Note the location of the nearest lifeguard and report any hazardous conditions to him or her. • Know the name of the beach or hotel/ condo and the beach marker number where you are staying if you should need assistance. • There are often jellyfish and stingrays, as well as other sea life in and out of the water, which may sting or cut a person. In any situation where first aid is needed, find a lifeguard or seek further medical attention. • Call or wave for help if you are in trouble. hiltonhead.com

Water Safety Tips:

• Don’t enter the water if you can’t swim. • Swim near a lifeguard. • Ask the lifeguard about any dangers in the water or on the beach, especially if he or she is flying a yellow caution flag. • Be aware of direction and strength of longshore currents. These currents can take you up and down the beach quickly and cause you or your kids to get lost. • Don’t let your kids swim unsupervised even in guarded areas. • Don’t swim alone. Use the buddy system so that someone always knows where you are so they can get help if needed. • Don’t overestimate your swimming ability. Stay in chest-deep or less water to insure you don’t get stuck in water over your head. • Don’t rely on flotation devices. • Swim parallel to shore if you want to swim long distances. • Don’t swim against the current. Swim across the current to escape the pull. • Always swim sober. • Don’t dive into unknown water or shallow breaking waves. Always go feet first.

Beach Prohibitions:

The following are prohibited on all beaches: – Possession or consumption of alcohol – Glass (bottles, containers, etc.) – Littering – Indecent exposure or nudity – Disorderly conduct – Disturbing the peace – Unauthorized vehicles – Fires and fireworks – Shark fishing – Horseback riding or motorized driving – Removal, harming or harassment of any hiltonhead.com
