Gullah Folk Beliefs & Home Remedies
HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE
Spanish moss adds character to the trees all over Daufuskie Island. Visitors and natives alike see the moss hanging from the trees as beautiful. Not only was it plentiful when I was a child, it was also useful in many things that we did. Like many islanders, Pop and Momma believed in doing all sorts of things for comfort. During my parents’ younger days, Spanish moss was used for stuffing mattresses and pillows. We fed our cows and horses the Spanish moss.
It was also said to be good for treating high blood pressure. If you put some green
Spanish moss in your shoes, it would help bring down your blood pressure. They put in only enough so that they could still wear their shoes comfortably. They allowed the moss to stay in their shoes until it was dry, then removed it and repeated the process. Folks somehow knew when the green Spanish moss had helped lower their blood pressure.
I never understood how the Spanish moss helped, but it worked for island folks. It was their belief and nature’s way. For them it worked, and that was all that mattered.

GULLAH Culture
Did You Know?
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. wrote his “I Have a Dream” speech among the Gullah on St. Helena Island, SC.
The 1991 film Daughters of the Dust, about three generations of Gullah women, was the first feature directed by an African American woman to have a general U.S. theatrical release.
Hilton Head Island’s Gullah community in Mitchelville passed the country’s first law requiring universal schooling.
Pat Conroy’s novel, The Water is Wide, fictionalized the Gullah community on Daufuskie Island, SC.
There is something both familiar and exotic about the Lowcountry. For those looking to unlock its mysteries, understanding the Gullah culture in South Carolina may just be the key.
In the late 1600s, rice was desired all over the world. Enslaved Africans from West Africa’s
“Rice Coast” were brought to the Lowcountry to work in the rice and cotton fields. The landscape was hot, remote and teeming with mosquitos. Physically and culturally isolated, the workers were left to live, worship, speak and cook as they wished. They became known as the Gullah, and they created their own cuisine and language, holding tight to treasured West African skills and traditions.
Gullah cuisine grew out of the resourcefulnessof enslaved African women, who applied European and African cooking methods and flavors to locally available foods, including fish, shrimp, oysters, crabs and crops native to the Americas such as tomatoes, corn and squash. Peanuts, watermelon, yams, okra and collard greens were imported from Africa. Quintessential Gullah dishes include fried fish, stewed shrimp and hoppin’ john. In fact, many classic “Southern” dishes came straight from Gullah kitchens.
An English-based hybrid, the Gullah language includes nearly 4,000 African words. Gullah is still in use today, especially in storytelling. Spoken, chanted or sung, Gullah stories are proudly passed from one generation to the next.
The Gullah also craft beautiful coiled baskets handwoven from sweetgrass and palmetto fronds. Other Gullah traditions include the making of cast nets and the singing of lively spirituals, music that influenced American jazz, blues and gospel traditions.
Today, America’s Gullah population is estimated at approximately 300,000. However, because up to 70 percent of enslaved Africans landed in the Lowcountry, many more African Americans have Gullah roots.
The history of the Gullah people is one of adaptation, survival and community — and the story of the Lowcountry is incomplete without the Gullah experience.

Haint Blue
by Allyson Jones
The Gullah-Geechee people of the Sea Islands, direct descendents of the West Africans once enslaved on Lowcountry plantations, are widely credited with using “haint blue” to deter spirits from entering the home.
Before bridges connected these isolated communities to the mainland, milk-paint formulas were often mixed on-site using local pigments and ingredients, including lime.
Several sources suggest the lime — or perhaps indigo — acted as an insect repellent, rather than the color itself. As for ghosts, some argue they are unable to cross over water and others claim “heaven blue” is a deterrent.
However, traditions and superstitions vary from island to island.
Local Gullah storyteller Louise Miller Cohen, who also serves on the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor Commission, has tales of Booga Hags and supernatural “hot spots” where your hair will stand on end, but hadn’t heard the term “haint blue” growing up here.
Able to trace her family’s roots on Hilton Head back to the 1800s, Cohen notes many Native Islanders used blue as an exterior paint — but it was merely a preference, rather than a symbolic gesture.
Referring to it as a “transplant” idea, she laughingly points out that if blue did keep the haints away, EVERY house on the Island would have been the same color. While other Gullah communities may practice this tradition, Cohen insists it had nothing to do with the color of her uncle‘s home, a.k.a. “Bubba Duey’s Little House.”
In an effort to protect, preserve and promote Gullah history and culture and showcase life “before the bridge,” Cohen is currently restoring her uncle‘s home on Gumtree Road. The structure, one of several located on property her great-grandfather, William Simmons, purchased after the Civil War, will eventually become part of the non-profit Gullah Museum of Hilton Head Island.

Sweet in Every Sense
A Piece of Paradise at Kilwins
By Dani Ray
In 1947, just two years after the end of World War II, a new chocolatier arrived on the scene to deliver high-quality, comforting confections and friendly service to a nation that had been through a lot. More than 70 years later, walking into a Kilwins is still food for the soul the first thing you notice is the intoxicating aroma of crisp, freshly made waffle cones followed by a dazzling array of treats wrapped in glittering cellophane. Next, you may perceive how cheery the atmosphere is, and the fact that patrons at the ice cream counter are given all the time they need to make the all-important flavor determinations that will set them on the path to their perfect scoop.
Kilwins’ soft, rich ice cream begins with fresh milk and cream from family farms, and is prepared first as a premium base in small osher-certified batches o make he Perfect” Apple Pie, the premium base is joined by vanilla, cinnamon caramel swirls, baked apple pieces and sugared pie crust chunks t s ust my favorite says a Wilhoit, the General Manager of the Kilwins at helter ove veryone should give it a try ther popular flavors include the ea alt aramel a creamy vanilla-flavored concoction with swirls of salted caramel and chocolate-covered caramel candy—the oasted oconut and the ew rleans raline ecan hese first-class confections are then carefully frozen in custom tubs and shipped exclusively on Kilwins’ own carefully controlled refrigerated trucks.
his chocolatier s commitment to e cellence shows in its reviews, which are sprinkled with adjectives like bouncy, cloud-like, rich and creamy. Visitors detail the excellent service, describing it as fast, friendly,
helpful and respectful hey mention the hand-dipped caramel apples, the original recipe Mackinac Island fudge hand-paddled and then left cooling right in front of you (clever!), and all manner of treats dipped in chocolate. Also, in a season when piping hot drinks are the ticket, mention must be made of Kilwins’ traditional hot chocolate, a festive party of chocolate shavings fluffy whipped cream and homemade marshmallows. No matter the season, Kilwins has its complement nyway asks ilhoit with a grin what beach trip is complete without goodies?”
Hilton Head’s Kilwins is located in the Shelter ove owne entre across from rancesca s and around the corner from Belk. It is open 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 12 p.m.-9 p.m. on Sundays.

ARIES Beware the slump that comes with the post-holiday season. Suddenly things aren’t quite so merry, they’re just cold. But this time of year, we have to make our own light or risk dealing with the blues until spring. This month, explore new ways to enjoy the season!
TAURUS How long have you been saying you wanted to try this experience or that without making it happen? Why, Taurus? Modern times are busy, no doubt, but this is your life, you’ve got only one, and you are in the driver’s seat. This month, go for a spin!
GEMINI You’ve been considering a change that could have profound consequences for daily life. A good old-fashioned pros and cons list can help you visualize your dilemma and help you thoroughly and efficiently reason through your options.
CANCER Are you doing that thing where you’re listening but relating everything that’s said back to you? Don’t. Looking across the table and seeing someone absorbed in your words, focused on you, is something special. Practice this habit to deepen your relationships.
LEO After all the purchases of the holiday season, you may be in a shopping slump. Have you hit all the nearest thrift stores? They are far cheaper, more environmentally friendly, and are great for a shopping fi ive it a try and see what you find ven better bring a friend!
VIRGO You worry how you may be perceived by those closest to you. Consider this: how much time do you sit around thinking about judging those same people? Very little! Cast off the shackles of “what everyone thinks of me” and just do you.
LIBRA You have set foot on new terrain and you may have concerns about stability. That’s fair, and proceeding with caution is smart. But don’t forget about the excitement brought by novelty and the wonder that can come with adventure. It will wake you up if you let it!
SCORPIO Your head has been in La La Land lately but the world around you has felt brighter. That’s ok! Staying present is a virtue, but so is letting your imagination out to play.
SAGITTARIUS You said something recently that elicited an outsized emotional response in someone else. Consider why this other person may have had the reaction they did. Is the conversation worth having? If not, let it go! If so, consider tempering what needs to be said.
CAPRICORN If you’re having trouble keeping the house from exploding into chaos every single day, try this simple trick: never switch rooms without bringing an object back with you to where it belongs. Caution: the effectiveness of this habit may bring order to other areas of your life.
AQUARIUS Big plans don’t always go the way one hopes but the anticipation of them is half the fun, if not more! Allowing yourself to be swept away by the excitement of an upcoming event is an easy and natural way to add pep to your step.
PISCES You may still be feeling the effects of having indulged in too much of pretty much everything over the holidays. Here’s an idea to dispense with that feeling: do all your eating for the day by 6 p.m. This simple change gives your stomach a break and can improve your sleep!

HOROSCOPE
ARIES You may be feeling creatively stunted, but who isn’t these days? This month, get away—it doesn’t matter where—even if it’s just for one full afternoon. You’ll notice an immediate difference in your clarity of thought.
TAURUS The impulse to get something off our plate “once and for all” can be strong, but can also derail the best-laid plans. Slow down, work diligently, and see it pay off little by little.
GEMINI If you’re feeling guilty about all the things you aren’t getting to, take a step back and think of how much you actually accomplish in a single day! Then consider what makes a good day in your book, and find ways to incorporate more of it into your life.
CANCER With all of the cold, dark evenings still ahead, you may be fighting a sense of uneasiness this month. Lean in to the routines that bring you comfort, or start a new one.
LEO Getting out into nature in ebruary can be more difficult than usual, but not impossible and definitely advisable here s a reason we go stir crazy in the winter— too much time indoors can make you tired, irritable and jumpy. Find excuses to get outside!
VIRGO The clutter that surrounds you may be bumming you out this month. Can you dispense with some of it? Try bringing order to one small space in your home and see how it affects your state of mind. The effects may surprise you.
LIBRA In always seeking balance, you are constantly tweaking the systems that keep you running. Some of them work for you, Libra. Stick with them rather than seeking perfection.
SCORPIO Being honest isn’t the same thing as lacking mystery. Your relationships will always benefit from transparency and openness more than games and confusion.
SAGITTARIUS You may have recently set aside a hobby you once loved. Hobbies can help keep us motivated, engaged, and learning new skills. If you haven’t found the time to get back to it, maybe it’s time to seek another activity to delight in.
CAPRICORN Are you missing out on the glorious now because you’re busy worrying about tomorrow hings may feel difficult or scary, but tomorrow is not guaranteed, so this moment we’re in is the only one we’ve got. Seize it while it’s right in front of you!
AQUARIUS Your peace is being disturbed and it’s got you off balance. No matter who or what it is (an awful coworker, an ornery toddler, a dog that never stops barking), you do have some control over how you react. This month, consider how you might steady and strengthen yourself for your encounters with this obstacle.
PISCES It’s a little too easy to spend most of our time with the same people. The recent connection you made with someone new is an excellent reason to step outside your comfort zone a little and get a fresh perspective. This month, give it a shot!

The Town of Hilton Head Island provides nearly 60 miles of public pathways and nature trails for the enjoyment of pedestrians and cyclists.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ON THE PATHS:
• Obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws.
• Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users.
• Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles.
• Do not ride on roads when a pathway is available.
• Ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists.
• WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you.
RECREATIONAL PATHWAYS GUIDE
• Yield to pedestrians. When resting or stopped, please move off the pathway.
• Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flashlight. Bicycles must have a red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night.
• When approaching slower pathway users from behind, please sound your warning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left.
• Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under.
• Make eye contact and use hand signals. Assume other bicyclists and motorists don’t see you. Hand signals tell motorists and other path users what you intend to do and will ensure everyone’s safety on the paths.
• Be courteous, alert and predictable.
• WHITE DIAMONDS INDICATE RESTRICTED TRAVEL LANE: Travel with the flow of traffic.
• WHITE STRIPE & STOP SIGN INDICATE ROAD CROSSING: Stop and look for motorists.
• YELLOW CENTER LINE INDICATES TWO-WAY TRAFFIC: Keep to the right.
• SEVERAL WHITE DIAGONAL STRIPES INDICATE A CROSSWALK: Watch out for other bicyclists, pedestrians and motorists.
• At low tide, the Island’s 12 miles of beaches are ideal for biking. Public beaches are indicated on the Island Events map.
• Our map also shows the existing public pathways. Many kiosks are located along the pathways with an Island-wide map on one side and a localized map of the area on the other.

Comedy Magic Cabaret
— A History —
By Dani Ray
Sometimes, as a guy who designs and builds magic for Penn & Teller and David opperfield being hunted by the is ust another day at the office erry ollock laughs omebody reported suspicious looking e uipment was shipping by air hey cordoned off two city blocks looking for me called the bomb s uad and blew up some of my props!”

nd yet he says he always dreamed of opening his own club is vision was crystal clear: a cozy little cabaret, less of a standard comedy club and more like one of the smaller full-service egas showrooms The two to two-and-a-half-hour variety show would be 80% stand up, 20% original magic with plenty of room for audience participation e would invite the world-class magicians and comedians he’d met to be guest acts, and he would anchor the rest he club would host holiday parties weddings, business meetings and be set up to record - uality productions of any event ollock has an engineering background and loves to work with his hands so he would design and build all the systems himself—lighting, props, magic, music
Comedy Magic Cabaret was ready for the physical realm ut where to build it n his many trips to ilton ead ollock had noticed that comedy clubs just weren’t sticking omics can be pretty offensive he concedes here s only a small percentage that work clean uckily he s one of them ne of the best compliments ever was four generations of one family

Coyotes
Coyotes have been a part of Native American folklore for centuries. Some thought of them as tricksters, while others saw them as wise and powerful beings. They are cunning and intelligent animals whose physical ability is only strengthened by their endurance. With all of these qualities in one animal, it is no wonder that they have spread throughout the North American continent so prolifically.
Their appearance is very similar to a small German shepherd. Coyotes, Canis latrans, have pointed and erect ears with a long thin muzzle and a drooping tail. Their fur and size varies, depending on their geographical location.
Lowcountry coyotes tend to be fairly small with reddish brown hair and streaks of gray. They have a short soft underfur, topped withlong coarse guard hairs. In our area, they can weigh between 35-45 pounds. They are historically descendants of grey wolves, which still exist in North America today.
These animals are native to North America. During the time that Europeans came to colonize the area, coyotes were most common in the plains and arid areas of the West. Coyotes came to the Southeast in two waves. One was by natural migration, moving either through Canada and back to the South, and the other was due to humans.
Humans transplanted coyotes in our area in order to hunt them. There are also stories of farmers, wanting to rid the nuisance coyotes from their farmlands, that drove them as far away as they could. Either way, the coyotes began the natural progression of taking over the grey wolves’ territories across the continent. It is thought that coyotes will continue to spread their numbers into Central and South America in the future. They began to make a stronghold population in the state of South Carolina in the mid - to late -1990s.
Coyotes have very flexible social organizations. Some have a close-knit family unit, usually made of female relatives, and others have loose knit packs of juveniles and adult males. Females tend to be matriarchs of large packs.
Although coyotes hunt alone quite often, they are most known for hunting in packs to take down larger prey. Their
diet is made up mostly of rabbits, but are known to be omnivorous as well. They will eat small rodents, insects, fruits and berries, but working as a group, they are able to hunt fawns, deer and livestock and consume one percent of the United States sheep population.
In the state of South Carolina, coyotes will eat 62 percent of newborn fawns. Large numbers of fawn consumption has lowered the amount of deer South Carolinian’s are able to hunt. However, the number of coyotes that need to be culled each year continues to rise.
Breeding in South Carolina takes place between January and March. Monogamous pairs will be formed and they will bed down in tall grasses and brush. Females will either dig out new dens or expand already existing dens as a safe haven for the young. Female gestation periods are a little over two months, usually producing five to seven pups, but they can produce over 12. The pups will stay in the den for a month while nursing off of their mother for two months. Once they have weaned, the mother will hunt and regurgitate food for her young. Young males will leave the family by fall, while juvenile females tend to stay until spring. Average survival rate states that only one or two pups will make it to full maturity.

Why do
some trees lose their leaves in the winter?
By Jessie Renew
Here
in the Lowcountry, we have a lot of evergreen trees that don’t lose their leaves. Our stately live oak trees are technically deciduous. They constantly grow new leaves as they lose their old ones, so that the tree is always green. However, crepe myrtle, pecan and sycamore trees provide some seasonal color in the fall and lose their leaves in winter.
Plant cells contain a great deal of water, stored in the cell wall. When these cells freeze, the water stored inside them expands into ice crystals, which puncture the cell wall and collapse the cell. In order to protect themselves, deciduous trees lose their leaves ahead of winter's cold.
Trees that lose their leaves are susceptible to freezing winter temperatures because their leaf shape tends to be broad and flat with a lot of surface area. Evergreen trees, on the other hand, protect their leaves by layering up with a waxy outer coating. Their leaves are thinner and needle-like, which also protects them from the ravages of winter.
Leaves that fall from trees play an important role in the forest ecosystem. As they break down, fallen leaves enrich the soil. By losing all of their leaves, trees are also more readily able to disperse
pollen to seeds and to fertilize the next generation.
Deciduous trees can sense the days getting shorter by the change in the amount of chlorophyll being produced by their leaves. This trigger causes the tree to stop sending vital nutrients to the leaves, causing the leaves to stop producing chlorophyll altogether.
Without the presence of chlorophyll, other chemicals produced in the leaves are able to show their colors. These include carotenoids, which produce yellow, orange and brown leaves, and anthocyanins, which produce red fruits, berries and leaves.
How do the leaves actually fall off a tree? Leaves have a group of cells called an abscission layer in the stem, which slowly chokes off each leaf until it dies. Through decomposition, the stem and leaf become brittle and eventually fall.
This winter, as you survey the unique landscape of the Lowcountry, take time to appreciate the humble, bare tree and its sophisticated method of surviving the cold.

While not as plentiful as trout and redfish, flounder more readily attack the soft plastics. In fact, many flounder are “accidentally” caught while fishing for trout or redfish. The slow retrieve and the scented Gulp baits—which work for any of the three species—seem to increase the odds of reeling in this tasty flatfish.
By Capt. Miles Altman, Bayrunner Fishing Charters
In winter, the lush green hue of the marsh grass gives way to a golden color, and the cooler waters in January and ebruary are the clearest of the year in the owcountry
As the tides rise and fall, multitudes of speckled trout, redfish and flounder still offer great angling opportunities for the inshore angler all winter long. Winter is the most prolific time for catching speckled trout, and my favorite time of year. Cooler climes coupled with fewer boats bring schools of voracious trout into our local waters.
Once located, almost every cast for speckled trout results in a bone-jarring strike. Beautiful with their sleek silvery bodies sprinkled with dark spots, the resulting fight is tough, with occasional topwater head shaking. On a side note, clearer water also makes fishing with artificials more productive than live bait this time of year.
Blessed with a healthy population of redfish that can be caught year-round, the clear winter waters on Hilton Head Island also make these popular fish easier to catch with artificial bait. Pound for pound, the determined fight of the redfish is hard to beat amongst inshore dwellers. Like the trout, redfish respond to soft plastics fished slowly along the bottom.
Often the fight is a steady resistance, as the fish turns his flat body against your retrieve. Hold on tight, because when the flounder sees the boat, the battle usually begins in earnest. Make sure to keep your net handy, as many flounder are lost by anglers trying to hoist them out of the water.
During the winter months, sheepshead are still lurking around structures and pilings and can be taken with fiddlers, if you can find them. Live shrimp also stimulate these notorious bait thieves. Fishing for sheepshead will steadily improve into late winter and early spring…but that’s another story.
Until then, tight lines!

5 T HINGS I Learned from Golfing Greats
By Doug Weaver, Director of Instruction, Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy
One of the most intriguing things about golf is the importance of its mental aspect, and how every player will approach the game in a slightly different way. Today, I want to share with you some of what I’ve heard from and about the golfing legends around me.
1.Arnold Palmer suggested changing both shoes and socks after nine holes. Why? When your shoes get wet, they get heavier, changing the calculations in your balance. Wet feet can also chill the entire body, which tightens everything and can result in a sluggish swing. Warm, dry feet help the body keep a smooth and effortless swing.
2.Nick Faldo loved routine on and off the course. He recommended that players trim their fingernails every onday evening. Since our hands form our connection to the club, this makes perfect sense, and explains why pro golfers are no stranger to the manicure!
3.Mark McGwire had 70 home runs in one season of a or eague aseball and he was pretty darn good at golf, too. He liked to say that hitting a home run and hitting a good drive weren’t all that different. “Just try to hit it solid. When you try to hit a homerun you strike out. When you try to hit
a long drive, you get into trouble.”
4.Tiger Woods’ father Earl Woods posited that the most important distance in golf is between the ears. He understood golf as a mental game, and began nurturing mental techniques with a 3-year-old Tiger.
5.Andrew Magee would say that playing golf is like driving a car looking forward down the road, not thinking about the pedals, steering wheel or speedometer. “Golfers that think about their backswing eat hotdogs,” he said. “Golfers that think about the forward swing eat steak.”
There is so much to learn from the pros, from great golf instructors, and about yourself in golf. That’s part of what makes it so fascinating! Come see me anytime and we’ll get to work on getting the most out of your own game.
Carolina’s PGA Teacher of the Year, Doug Weaver is the Director of Instruction at the Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy. He conducts “Where Does the Power Come From?” a free interactive clinic and demonstration every Monday from 4-5 p.m. at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Course. Volunteer for a free lesson and some will win prizes! Call 866-455-6890 or go to www.palmettodunes.com for more information.

Island Trails Walking Paths
TAKE the time to enjoy these trails
Green’s Shell Enclosure:
The 3-acre Green’s Shell Enclosure Heritage Preserve is an archaeological site dating back to 1335 A.D. This trail is located near the nothern top of Hilton Head Island, just off of Squire Pope Rd.
From the parking area, you will walk on a road to this short, easy trail, which will take you into the past. You will pass a cemetery and cross over a ramp to an overlook at the end of the trail. Green’s Shell Enclosure is a low earthen embankment, two- to sixfeet high, that dates back to the Irene Period of 1300 to 1450 A.D. Covering two acres, this embankment was once a fortified village built by farmers who used shells for everything from tools to objects used for religious rituals.
Stay on the trail and do not remove anything from this preserve. Bring insect repellent during the warm months.
Hours: Dawn to dusk
Directions on Hilton Head Island: From the intersection of US 278 and Squire Pope Rd., turn left into Greens Park. Entrance to the preserve is on the left at the gate. Go around the gate and walk on the road past the cemetery to the entrance ramp.
Jarvis Creek Leisure Loop:
The Leisure Loop at Jarvis Creek Park is an easy .85 mile paved loop. The loop starts behind the restrooms. There’s a small pier at the start of the trail with access to a dock. If you start off counterclockwise, you’ll pass a fitness station to your left.
Pathways extend all over the park and around the lake creating a 1.1 mile loop. Runners, joggers and walkers are all welcome to explore the lakeside paths that extend out into wooded areas. This paved trail is equipped with wooden bridges over marshy areas, so no one has to get their feet too dirty.
There are nine pieces of outdoor training equipment in a peaceful area behind a live oak, and the park was designed with exercising in mind! Each station has a set of instructions that explains how to use the equipment and perform the exercise. You even get a beautiful view of the lake while you’re strengthening your core.
Hours: Dawn to dusk.
Directions: Located off of William Hilton Pkwy.

Jarvis Creek Loop
Audubon Newhall Preserve:
The Hilton Head Island Audubon Society owns and operates the Audubon Newhall Preserve, located on Palmetto Bay Rd. It is open to the public at no charge.
The Audubon Newhall Preserve is a series of short, easy walking, interconnected trails through a fifty-acre nature preserve. A trail guide is available at the entrance. You will see a wide variety of trees and plants, from Florida scrub to native hardwoods. A feature of the preserve is a rare pocosin (the Indian word for bog), which was once a characteristic feature of barrier islands.
Hours: Dawn to dusk
Directions: From US 278 near the entrance to Hilton Head Island: Turn right onto the Cross Island Parkway. When you reach Palmetto Bay Rd., watch for the Audubon Newhall Preserve sign on the right. From US 278 on the south part of the Island: Drive west to the traffic circle and turn right onto Palmetto Bay Rd. Look for the sign on the left.
Sea Pines Forest Preserve:
An easy walk or ride through a maritime forest and marshland in this protected pre-
serve. The preserve has a 4,000-year-old Indian shell ring, a wild flower meadow with dozens of flower varieties, fresh water lakes suitable for fishing and a bountiful bird habitat.
Shade is plentiful during the summer months. Restrooms, drinking water and a picnic area are available in the center of the preserve at Fish Island.
The land has been sculpted by changing sea levels over the past 15,000 years and traces of the first inhabitants still remain. The Indian Shell Ring is 4,000-years-old and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Length: Approximately 2 miles of walking/hiking nature trails and 6 miles of multi-purpose trails
Fees: There is a (per car) fee to enter Sea Pines Resort.
Directions: From the entrance to Hilton Head Island: Drive on US 278 and turn right onto the Cross Island Parkway. Continue to the traffic circle on Palmetto Bay Rd and turn right onto Greenwood Dr. The Sea Pines' gate is in 0.2 miles and the preserve is 1 mile from the gate on the left.

nated for the Alder Lane, Coligny, Driessen, Folly Field and Islanders Beach Parks. The boundaries will be clearly marked on the beach and in the water. Lifeguards are stationed at these designated areas for assistance and beach information.
Beach Marker Signs:
Hilton Head’s beaches are marked near the dune line with signs to let emergency responders know where assistance is needed. They are also useful as a reference point if you or your group should become lost.
Beach Safety Tips:
•Apply and reapply plenty of sunscreen even on cloudy days.
•Wear sunglasses to prevent damage from the sun.
•Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water.
•Be aware of the rules and regulations of the beach. Signs are posted near most beach accesses.
•Don’t leave your kids unsupervised even in guarded areas.
• Note the location of the nearest lifeguard and report any hazardous conditions to him or her.
•Know the name of the beach or hotel/ condo and the beach marker number where you are staying if you should need assistance.
•There are often jellyfish and stingrays, as well as other sea life in and out of the water, which may sting or cut a person. In any situation where first aid is needed, find a lifeguard or seek further medical attention.
•Call or wave for help if you are in trouble.
56 Island Events January-February 2023 hiltonhead.com
Water Safety Tips:
•Don’t enter the water if you can’t swim.
•Swim near a lifeguard.
•Ask the lifeguard about any dangers in the water or on the beach, especially if he or she is flying a yellow caution flag.
•Be aware of direction and strength of longshore currents. These currents can take you up and down the beach quickly and cause you or your kids to get lost.
•Don’t let your kids swim unsupervised even in guarded areas.
•Don’t swim alone. Use the buddy system so that someone always knows where you are so they can get help if needed.
•Don’t overestimate your swimming ability. Stay in chest-deep or less water to insure you don’t get stuck in water over your head.
•Don’t rely on flotation devices.
•Swim parallel to shore if you want to swim long distances.
•Don’t swim against the current. Swim across the current to escape the pull.
•Always swim sober.
• Don’t dive into unknown water or shallow breaking waves. Always go feet first.
