RECREATIONAL PATHWAYS GUIDE

The Town of Hilton Head Island provides nearly 60 miles of public pathways and nature trails for the enjoyment of pedestrians and cyclists.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ON THE PATHS: • Obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws. • Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users. • Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles. • Do not ride on roads when a pathway is available. • Ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists.

• WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you.

• Make eye contact and use hand signals. Assume other bicyclists and motorists don’t see you. Hand signals tell motorists and other path users what you intend to do and will ensure everyone’s safety on the paths.

A Picture is Indeed Worth a Thousand

By Doug Weaver, Director of Instruction, Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy lbert Einstein famously said: “if you can’t explain it simply, you A don’t understand it well enough.” I would be inclined to agree. Teaching golf can be very simple or it can be very complicated, so I utilize the KISS method: keep it simple and simple. Part of that is ensuring that you experience a proper golf swing — not just listen to me talk about it. When you attend a lesson with me, I like to assess, observing what you do or do not do and asking you questions to better understand your approach. Then, I make a plan for your learning that follows a simple formula and allows you to see and feel the proper technique. Personally, I’m a visual learner, so I like to use pictures to illustrate the point I’m trying to get across. This picture of a hand gently holding an ice cream cone is much like how you hold a golf club. Hold the club lightly and it will go faster, creating more distance. Like Tiger Woods says in his book, relaxed muscles move faster than tense muscles. Tennis serves are similar; if you want a fast serve, your hands and wrists must be relaxed. Another visual learning tool I make use of is “the golf clock,” which helps teach distance control when making a shot. The later in time/the higher the swing, the more swing speed created and the greater the distance. The clock system can be used in all shots including putting, chipping and sand, when distance control is more valuable than gaining the greatest possible amount of yards. A third simple visual I like to use has to do with ball position, a key piece of any player’s golf game. The longer the club, the more the ball is positioned toward

the lead foot or the foot closest to the target. The shorter the club, the closer the ball is positioned to the center of the stance. Why? Bigger clubs require more movement and greater weight transfer from the trail foot to the lead foot. Once these “fun”damentals are absorbed, players can begin to let go of all of the thinking and feel the grace inherent in golf. If that’s what you happen to be looking for, I’m here to help! July’s BEST Catches By Capt. Miles Altman, Bayrunner Fishing Charters

he large chunk of fresh-cut bait had scarcely touched bottom when the fish inhaled it and took off! As quickly as I moved the drag to the strike setting, the hefty rod bent double and went under the boat. “Big brown, big brown!” my brother Don hollered, as the fish took to the air behind me. I could hear the large splash but was too busy bent over the side with the rod in the water trying to keep old big brown from rubbing the line against the hull and breaking off.

While the cobia action wanes by mid-June, there are many other exciting species to be caught now. Near offshore on the reefs and in the creeks, the sheepshead are biting.

Don tilted the engine as I worked the fish back to my side of the boat and, after a few tense minutes of seesaw action between the line and the transducer, she was free once more.

Patrolling the bait and Spanish mackerel schools, you never know where the big brother of the Spanish, the king mackerel, may be lurking. Weighing between 15 and 60 pounds, this royalty puts up an exciting battle.

As I handed the rod to my son Caleb, the fish broke water again. The fish surged, taking line freely and I held on to 10-year-old Caleb. It weighed at least half as much as my son, who groaned because of the strong pull of the fish. Slowly we worked the cobia back to the boat after 10 minutes of back and forth, but when the fish saw the boat, the line peeled off the reel again, despite Caleb’s protests. 70 Island Events July 2022

Also biting are Spanish mackerel and bluefish off the sandbars close to the beach. The action is usually fast and furious when you encounter school fish. In the same areas, large jack crevalle can be found, along with an occasional bull redfish.

Last, but hardly least, the real July crowd pleasers, especially with the younger generation, are the sharks. We have many species of shark here: bulls, blacktips, duskies, scalloped or bonnet heads, sand, reef, sharp nose and more. Most of these sharks will be in the four- to five-foot range, but there are larger ones to be had. Charters are available to go offshore for the massive tiger sharks, often 12 feet or larger! The smaller ones can be caught on short trips and offer lots of regular action, a priority for younger anglers. Sharks make for great vacation memories and, most of all, the kids love them! Island Beaches Public Beach Access: The Town of Hilton Head Island provides nine public beach accesses: • Alder Lane Beach Access, off South Forest Beach Dr. • Coligny Beach Park, off Coligny Circle • Driessen Beach Park, end of Bradley Beach Rd. • Chaplin Community Park, off Wm. Hilton Pkwy. • Fish Haul Park & Mitchelville Freedom Park, end of Beach City Rd. • Burkes Beach Access, end of Burkes Beach Rd. • Folly Field Beach Park and Islanders Beach Park, both off Folly Field Rd.

Parking & Facilities:

There are 23 metered spaces at Alder Lane, 54 metered spaces at Folly Field and 13 metered spaces at Burkes Beach Road. The parking fee is a QUARTER for each 15 minutes. Additionally, there are 207 spaces at Driessen Beach Park for long-term parking. The fee is a QUARTER for each 15 minutes during the week. Parking spaces at Islanders Beach Park are ALWAYS reserved for annual beach passes. Parking at Driessen Beach Park for annual beach passes is reserved from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Parking is FREE at Fish Haul Park, Mitchelville Freedom Park and Coligny Beach Park. Handicap parking is available at no fee at all parks. Restrooms, changing areas, sand showers and vending machines are available.

Beach Marker Signs:

Hilton Head’s beaches are marked near the dune line with signs to let emergency responders know where assistance is needed. They are also useful as a reference point if you or your group should become lost.

Beach Safety Tips: • Apply and reapply plenty of sunscreen even on cloudy days. • Wear sunglasses to prevent damage from the sun. • Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water. • Be aware of the rules and regulations of the beach. Signs are posted near most beach accesses. • Don’t leave your kids unsupervised even in guarded areas. • Note the location of the nearest lifeguard and report any hazardous conditions to him or her. • Know the name of the beach or hotel/ condo and the beach marker number where you are staying if you should need assistance. • There are often jellyfish and stingrays, as well as other sea life in and out of the water, which may sting or cut a person. In any situation where first aid is needed, find a lifeguard or seek further medical attention. • Call or wave for help if you are in trouble. hiltonhead.com

Water Safety Tips: • Don’t enter the water if you can’t swim. • Swim near a lifeguard. • Ask the lifeguard about any dangers in the water or on the beach, especially if he or she is flying a yellow caution flag. • Be aware of direction and strength of longshore currents. These currents can take you up and down the beach quickly and cause you or your kids to get lost. • Don’t let your kids swim unsupervised even in guarded areas. • Don’t swim alone. Use the buddy system so that someone always knows where you are so they can get help if needed. • Don’t overestimate your swimming ability. Stay in chest-deep or less water to insure you don’t get stuck in water over your head. • Don’t rely on flotation devices. • Swim parallel to shore if you want to swim long distances. • Don’t swim against the current. Swim across the current to escape the pull. • Always swim sober. • Don’t dive into unknown water or shallow breaking waves. Always go feet first.
