A Day onthe Water
Life on Hilton Head Island revolves around the water, and few places offer so many opportunities to enjoy this liquid asset. From Broad Creek to the Calibogue Sound, the Intracoastal Waterway to the Atlantic Ocean, freshwater lagoons to brackish backwaters, you’re just moments away from a great day on the water.
Launch & Land
A perfect day on the water begins and ends at any of the Island’s many marinas, which feature an array of watersports, boat rentals, tackle shops, fishing charters and ecotours, as well as signature restaurants, shopping and entertainment. Explore the famous candystriped Lighthouse in Harbour Town, the Mediterranean mood of Shelter Cove Harbour, the New England-style fishing village of South Beach Marina, the Key West feel of Palmetto Bay Marina and the rustic charm of Broad Creek Marina, Skull Creek Marina and Hilton Head Harbor.
Bike the Beach
Hilton Head Island’s 12 miles of hard-packed, white-sand beaches provide the perfect playground for any age, at any time of year. Rent a beach cruiser to explore the strand at your own pace. Locals know that low tide is the perfect time to ride along the beach, when the sand is flat and hardpacked.
Dolphin Days
Have you ever seen Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphin in the wild?
Don’t miss the chance to take a local dolphin tour, where you’ll see dolphin in their natural habitat and learn about their amazing behavior. A dolphin tour offers a familyfriendly way to spend the day out on the water and to see these incredible mammals in action.
Reel Fun
Bait your hook and head out for a day of deep sea, inshore or shark fishing with experienced boat captains who know the secret spots. Or drop a line into the nearest lagoon, cast a shrimp net or try surf fishing on the beach to see what you can catch (and release!) this season.
Sail Away
Let the wind fill your sails as you salute the sunset on a Happy Hour Cruise, hail a water taxi to neighboring Daufuskie Island, spend a few hours or all day sightseeing, sign up for sailing lessons or rent a boat to play your way.
Go Wild
A natural setting for adventure, the Island is home to an amazing array of animals. Enjoy a shark fishing excursion, alligator adventure or bird-watching tour to view the Island’s wild inhabitants.
Paddle Time
Experience the Island’s wildlife up close on a guided kayak or canoe trip through calm tidal creeks and Lowcountry marshlands. Choose from customized family adventures, corporate retreats, team building exercises or camps for kids, tweens and teens. Just don’t forget your camera to capture picture-perfect moments.
Fly High
Get an unforgettable bird’s-eye view of the Lowcountry on a helicopter ride, or spend a few thrilling hours on an aerial adventure. Enjoy a two-hour zipline canopy tour along glistening Broad Creek or an aerial adventure with a high ropes challenge course. Whichever you choose, you’ll get an amazing view of the Island and all its beauty.

The Town of Hilton Head Island provides nearly 60 miles of public pathways and nature trails for the enjoyment of pedestrians and cyclists.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ON THE PATHS:
• Obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws.
• Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users.
• Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles.
• Do not ride on roads when a pathway is available.
• Ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists.
• WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you.
RECREATIONAL PATHWAYS GUIDE
• Yield to pedestrians. When resting or stopped, please move off the pathway.
• Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flashlight. Bicycles must have a red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night.
• When approaching slower pathway users from behind, please sound your warning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left.
• Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under.
• Make eye contact and use hand signals. Assume other bicyclists and motorists don’t see you. Hand signals tell motorists and other path users what you intend to do and will ensure everyone’s safety on the paths.
• Be courteous, alert and predictable.
• WHITE DIAMONDS INDICATE RESTRICTED TRAVEL LANE: Travel with the flow of traffic.
• WHITE STRIPE & STOP SIGN INDICATE ROAD CROSSING: Stop and look for motorists.
• YELLOW CENTER LINE INDICATES TWO-WAY TRAFFIC: Keep to the right.
• SEVERAL WHITE DIAGONAL STRIPES INDICATE A CROSSWALK: Watch out for other bicyclists, pedestrians and motorists.
• At low tide, the Island’s 12 miles of beaches are ideal for biking. Public beaches are indicated on the Island Events map.
• Our map also shows the existing public pathways. Many kiosks are located along the pathways with an Island-wide map on one side and a localized map of the area on the other.

Golf Is for Everyone
By Doug Weaver, Director of Instruction Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy
My friend, Leo Luken, played golf at the age of 94. And he was able to score his age or better! Incredibly, Leo didn’t start playing until he was in his 40s. Every day, I teach 3-year-olds how to tee the ball up, make putts and swing while singing a song. I really enjoy teaching the teenager who isn’t built for football or basketball and wants to enjoy a sport of their own. The game of golf has something for you, regardless of age or your abilities. One of the best things about golf is that it’s a sport that everyone can enjoy together.
Here are a few highlights of classes we offer at Palmetto Dunes that can help you improve your game and get your spending time on the green with family and friends:
Free Golf Clinic and Exhibition: Every Monday from 4-5 p.m., enjoy an interactive, hands on, fun and educational experience. Volunteer for a free brief lesson or win a prize. Beneficial for all skill levels.
Junior Class: Now is the time to learn; instructors help kids fall in love with the game of golf! Clubs are provided in all classes.
Senior Golf: Today is the first day of the rest of your life! I encourage you to participate in a non-contact, outdoor, leisure sport that you can play at your level and that will bring enjoyment to everyone. Golf is proven to be excellent for Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and arthritis.
Ladies Only: You can find a true timeout here while your kindred spirits laugh and cheer you on as you improve your game. This sport is similar to dancing and relies much more on flow and flexibility than strength.
Family Golf: Everyone is together, and all ages are welcome. The first hour is focused on the basics in the practice area. The second hour is enjoyed on the course, paying with the pro and learning as you go. $250 per four people and $50 for additional players after that. Videos and photos of the wonderful memories included!
Lil’ Swingers: Parents will learn how to coach! Learn songs that will instruct, get your little one into a rhythm and will encourage a love for the game.
Play with the pro and learn as you go: This is a very effective way to learn the game. Students will learn course management, trouble shots, etiquette, and much more.
A former PGA Tour Pro and member of the local Golf Hall of Fame, Doug Weaver is the Director of Instruction at the Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy. He conducts “Where Does the Power Come From?”, a free interactive clinic and demonstration every Monday from 4-5 p.m. at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Course. Volunteer for a free lesson and some will win prizes! Call (866) 455-6890 or go to www.palmettodunes.com for more information.

Baby Birds Galore in the Forest Preserve
By Anthony R. Savarese, Reel Carolina
One of the many blessings the Sea Pines Forest Preserve offers is a protected natural habitat for wildlife to grow, mature and reproduce, as they did before the development of Hilton Head Island.
The Sea Pines Forest Preserve is a sanctuary for many species, but most evident during this time of year are the many varieties of nesting birds. During the month of July, patrons who participate in the H20 Alligator and Wildlife Tour will enjoy the awesome experience of observing hatchling nests of Night Herons, Great Blue Herons, Ospreys and many more species currently rearing their young!
The Sea Pines Forest Preserve currently hosts numerous coastal bird species that are in the child-rearing stage, and the H20 Alligator and Nature Tour guides are great at pointing these out and explaining in detail the wonderful phenomenon. We have watched baby Ospreys grow and fledge the nest for decades. The Sea Pines Forest Preserve has a resident family of Osprey who have become exceptional parents over the years, and successfully reared many babies. Many times during our one-hour tour we see and hear the young Osprey call to their parents for food and watch the parents tirelessly care for their young throughout the day.
Night Herons are also beginning to hatch, and it is amazing to watch Night Heron families interact with each other. There are typically around three young per nest, though we have seen more.
Finally, The Sea Pines Forest Preserve is host to two Great Blue Heron nests. Patrons are sure to observe the young hatchlings on our tour during the month of July. These majestic, large birds are a highlight of the tour, and a true blessing to see.
The tender moments between parents and their young within our bird families offer great photo opportunities for a unique memory of Hilton Head Island, as well as wonderful learning opportunities for families with children. We hope you will join us during your summer vacation and let the friendly guides of the H20 Alligator and Nature Tours enhance your vacation experience!

KAYAKING HILTON HEAD
efit of the guide providing entertainment throughout the expedition.
If you are an experienced paddler and would like to go out on your own, rent some kayaks and plan ahead. The tides in our area vary from 7 to 10 feet, making it crucial to know the tides before going kayaking. While paddling against the tide is not difficult, going against the strongest tide for the whole trip isn’t that enjoyable. If you plan to paddle with kids, choose the easiest possible route based on the tides.
Look up the tide chart in this magazine or online at hiltonheadisland.com/ beaches/tides. This site lets you pick from many local waterways. For your first time out, plan to split the low or high tide. If you want to be out for two hours, leave an hour before low or high tide. For example: if the high tide at Broad Creek is at 7:24 a.m. on June 1, leave at 6:24 a.m. and return at 8:24 a.m. The times of high and low tide vary every day, so remember to check the tide tables!

The marshes surrounding Hilton Head are a lush wilderness, ideal for exploring by kayak. For thousands of years, small boats have been used to connect these coastal islands for the purposes of trade, family and culture. The modern kayak continues the longstanding Lowcountry tradition of the personal watercraft. If you do one thing while visiting our Island, get on the water in a kayak.
Kayaking is a true family sport. It is fun and easy enough for children and seniors, but complex enough to engage serious enthusiasts. Our ideal weather and temperate climate make the Lowcountry the perfect place for beginners to learn kayaking. For your first time out, employ a knowledgeable guide to take you on a tour of the winding trails and open vistas of the salt marsh. Your guide will give you an overview of the plant and animal species in the area, as well as interpreting the tides and winds to give you the best possible trip. If you are kayaking with kids, a tour has the added ben-
You will also want to check the weather before heading out. Technology has made this an easy task. Remember, weather predictions get more accurate closer to the day of the prediction. Also note, wind is a not always your friend. If it is blowing 10 mph or above, expect it to be a bit difficult paddling in one direction; 15 mph and above be cautious; at 20 mph and above, you probably shouldn’t go out. Check the weather right before you go, to be sure there are no pop-up storms, which are common in the spring and summer. Again, if kayaking with kids, err on the side of caution for the best possible experience.
For more than 30 years, Outside Hilton Head has provided personalized adventures for all ages, from kayak, fishing, nature and dolphin tours to kids’ camps, history excursions, family outings and standup paddleboarding. (843) 686-6996 or outsidehiltonhead.com.

Shark Season
al antics — which can be spectacular — these sharks require a 54-inch minimum length to keep. Both the blacktip and the spinner shark are excellent table fare. The bigger versions of these species are often found behind working shrimp boats, as they love to scavenge tidbits and, much to the chagrin of shrimpers, frequently bite holes in the nets to help themselves to a feast!
Offshore, many anglers target the big tiger sharks, which average 8 to 10 feet and weigh up to a thousand pounds. Heavy tackle is required, along with stamina. These battles can go on for hours. Tiger sharks are tough customers, to say the least.
This month, reel in one of these tacklebusting brutes.
Spring’s warmer waters have populated quickly with a diverse and bountiful population of sharks. These tackle-busting brutes offer great sport — and plenty of it.
Long known as a primary breeding ground for many species, the local waters near Hilton Head Island host many types of sharks, including hammerheads, tigers, blacktip, spinners, sharp nose and bonnet-heads, just to name a few. In the last few years, even great whites have been captured here.
As with many fish, the decline of stocks, coupled with an exploding population of fishermen, has brought about numerous regulations, making it necessary to release most species, except for two in particular: the sharpnose and the bonnethead. Anglers may keep one of any size of these two shark species. Both are considered good eating, especially the bonnethead, whose diet consists primarily of shrimp and crab. Both shark species can be caught in local sounds and creeks with a variety of cut or live bait.
Other popular targets for shark seekers are the blacktip and spinner sharks. Nicknamed “poor man’s tarpon” for their aeri-
The opportunity for hours of angling enjoyment with a wide variety of sharks is available here all summer long. And for those who may raise an eyebrow about safety, just remember that you are far better off swimming in the ocean than driving along Hwy. 278!

ARIES Summertime always seems to go by in a blur, but it doesn’t have to be so. How can you put the brakes on it and extend the season just a little longer? This month, plan ahead to make sure you get a few “pure” summer days this time around.
TAURUS If it’s love and beauty you seek, Taurus, it is all around you! It will be easy this month to get bogged down in other things, but putting yourself in the right mindset will make all the difference.
GEMINI With Gemini’s transit nis , t is mont mi t a oo tim to r ct on r you’ve been. Take a moment to let it all soak in before you make determinations about what’s next.
CANCER If you’re feeling a little lost this month, look back at your latest round of goal setting. Just ca s o ar n t as r a o t o r path as you have been in the past doesn’t mean it isn’t worthwhile.
LEO Your very strong personality isn’t for everyone, but that’s okay. Don’t let the deep love and admiration of your family and closest friends be obscured by the disapproval of those you don’t care for. Try to accept that the feeling is mutual and just let it go!
VIRGO You’ll always have something to feel guilty about, won’t you? Be honest with yourself. If you need to stew over the things you’ve done that i n t or o t st ri t, n , t n in precious time and energy on what you could not control is folly. This month, choose not to do it!
LIBRA Your lifelong quest for perfection in all things has resulted in some amazing outcomes but, Libra, you’re wearing yourself out. Who is this omniscient presence that judges everything you do that’s so critical? It’s only you. Isn’t it time you gave yourself a break?
SCORPIO Sometimes it takes a really long time to come around to truths we have known for some time. You have had your eye on an activity for a while now, and while you may think you’re just observing or admiring, your subconscious may be communicating something important. What do you suppose that is?
SAGITTARIUS How many negative comments do you make versus positive ones? Overall? To certain coworkers or family members? Chances are, you have no idea how they stack up against each other. This month, keep a mental tally. You may be very surprised by what you learn.
CAPRICORN Apologies are incredibly powerful, and not just the long, drawn out, tearful kind. Did you mess up? Cop to it, and watch tension and blame melt away.
AQUARIUS You are waiting around for something that may or may not ever happen. If it’s a thing o on t av a lot of control ov r, n somthing else you can shape for yourself and get thee to sculpting!
PISCES You may have been a little lax with your health lately, Pisces, but now is not the time. If you’re fortunate enough to be well in body, do the work to keep yourself that way! If you’re not feeling all that great, getting back to feeling good should be your top priority.

Designated Swimming Areas: Official swimming areas have been desig-
nated for the Alder Lane, Coligny, Driessen, Folly Field and Islanders Beach Parks. The boundaries will be clearly marked on the beach and in the water. Lifeguards are stationed at these designated areas for assistance and beach information.
Beach Marker Signs:
Hilton Head’s beaches are marked near the dune line with signs to let emergency responders know where assistance is needed. They are also useful as a reference point if you or your group should become lost.
Beach Safety Tips:
•Apply and reapply plenty of sunscreen even on cloudy days.
•Wear sunglasses to prevent damage from the sun.
•Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water.
•Be aware of the rules and regulations of the beach. Signs are posted near most beach accesses.
•Don’t leave your kids unsupervised even in guarded areas.
• Note the location of the nearest lifeguard and report any hazardous conditions to him or her.
•Know the name of the beach or hotel/ condo and the beach marker number where you are staying if you should need assistance.
•There are often jellyfish and stingrays, as well as other sea life in and out of the water, which may sting or cut a person. In any situation where first aid is needed, find a lifeguard or seek further medical attention.
•Call or wave for help if you are in trouble.
72 Island Events July 2023 hiltonhead.com
Water Safety Tips:
•Don’t enter the water if you can’t swim.
•Swim near a lifeguard.
•Ask the lifeguard about any dangers in the water or on the beach, especially if he or she is flying a yellow caution flag.
•Be aware of direction and strength of longshore currents. These currents can take you up and down the beach quickly and cause you or your kids to get lost.
•Don’t let your kids swim unsupervised even in guarded areas.
•Don’t swim alone. Use the buddy system so that someone always knows where you are so they can get help if needed.
•Don’t overestimate your swimming ability. Stay in chest-deep or less water to insure you don’t get stuck in water over your head.
•Don’t rely on flotation devices.
•Swim parallel to shore if you want to swim long distances.
•Don’t swim against the current. Swim across the current to escape the pull.
•Always swim sober.
• Don’t dive into unknown water or shallow breaking waves. Always go feet first.
