5 Places on Hilton Head for the Nature Lover.

Want an authentic Hilton Head ecological experience? Don't miss out on these 5 must-see spots.

Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge

Pinckney Island, located between Hilton Head Island and Bluffton, SC, attracts over a quarter of a million visitors each year. This easily accessible island offers a range of wildlife-dependent activities, including hiking, biking, and wildlife watching. If you're a fan of fishing, you ll be happy to know that saltwater fishing is permitted in the surrounding waters. And for those interested in hunting, there is an annual one-day deer hunt held in the fall.

The Refuge offers a variety of opportunities to explore and enjoy the great outdoors from sunrise to sunset. You can hike, bicycle, observe wildlife, take pictures or go saltwater fishing.

Pinckney Island is a crucial stop along the Atlantic Flyway for thousands of migratory birds each year. This sanctuary is not only a haven for these feathered travelers, but also serves as a rookery for colonial wading birds like ibis, egrets, and herons. In addition to protecting birds and other wildlife from disturbance, a "no dogs" policy is in place. www.fws.gov/refuge/pinckney-island.

Jarvis Creek Park

Located off William Hilton Parkway on Jarvis Creek Road, this 53-acre park includes a large pond and one-mile walking trail around the lake and workout stations. The lakeside paths extend out into wooded areas. The paved trail is equipped with wooden bridges over marshy areas.

There is abundant wildlife along this short and paved adventure. Be mindful of allgators lounging on the banks of the lake and watch these amazing creatures from a safe distance. This is a great trail for birding and offers solitude during quieter times of day. The trail is open year-round and is beautiful to visit anytime. Dogs are welcome. www. hiltonheadislandsc.gov/parks/JarvisCreek

Audubon Newhall Preserve

Open daily from sunrise to sunset, the Preserve welcomes visitors of all abilities. The wide paths and boardwalk are accessible for those with mobility challenges, and there are benches along the way for rest or observation. Be sure to check out the observation deck, where you can view the diverse wildlife that lives here.

Even furry friends are welcome at the preserve, as long as they're leashed. Please clean up after your pets to help maintain the pristine environment. www.hiltonheadaudubon. org/audubon-newhall-preserve

structures on Hilton Head Island. Three wooden boardwalks extend into the Jarvis Creek salt marsh, while fact filled interpretive panels guide you. They offer information about our salt marshes and how Gullah Native Islanders relied on this rich ecosystem for food and commerce.

In the summer you will be enchanted by the region s only native butter y enclosure and experience the life cycle of local butteries. n the winter you will fall in love with the Camellia Garden, which has over 130 different varieties in bloom from November to April. www.coastaldiscovery.org

Be careful not to overextend yourself with this added energy. Instead, use this time for that trip you’ve been dreaming of or that postponed back yard/home project.

CANCER You’re biting off some big responsibilities this month, Cancer. Whether tackling that home improvement project or serving as the executor for a loved ones estate. Remember, you don’t want to burn down the house just to squash the spider. Maybe asking for help isn’t so bad. Finding center and being grounded is key. Get outside, take a walk, or meditate.

LEO Professional fulfillment, blossoming friendships and personal development are converging for you this month. Deepen the relationships you have, be open to exploring new ones and new shared experiences on all fronts. Don’t shut the door on opportunity. You deserve the fun. Go to bed early and get up before everyone else, stretch, breathe and enjoy each day.

VIRGO Productivity and focus are your secret weapons this month. Use them to achieve success for the long run. Be wise about investments and spending, listen to yourself more than outside noise. Count on your confidence and experience. You know your worth.

LIBRA Inspiration and energy are working together to spark a long forgotten goal this month, Libra. You’re feeling more stable and grounded and that’s sparking capability and decisiveness. Take this time to reengage some fitness goals. Check in with close friends and family. Maybe start a group fitness class.

SCORPIO Your aura is irresistible this month, Scorpio. Use it wisely. Deepen your relationship or seek that lasting connection, but leave no damage behind. Be open and honest, seeking the best for everyone. Yoga and meditation are best for this time.

SAGITTARIUS Energy and ease of communication and ideas will set this month apart. Trust those in your circle for collaboration and advice, your plans and ambition rely on it. Family or romantic tension at the start of the month will turn to harmony and deeper understanding. Take advantage of this chance for personal growth and fulfillment in your relationships.

CAPRICORN Be proactive this month on the professional front. Your decisiveness is set to pay off. Transparency and directness is preferred than intrigue and secrecy. Your charm is an asset in business and also with your loved ones. Be careful with finances during this period of success and amour. Long-term goals are coming into view, be kind to those around you.

AQUARIUS Opportunity could present itself this month, Aquarius. Don’t be afraid to take it, whether travel, a new class, a new exciting professional role or, if single, even romance! If you have a partner, seek fun new opportunities in the hope of a deeper connection. Even trying a new restaurant, watching a new movie or walking a new path can be fun and spark new joy.

PISCES Solace and reconciliation is in store. Spend this month in the company of loved ones or seeking to repair relationships or situations that need mending. Now is also the time for repairs at home, even small improvements can be symbolic of restoration. Approach similar situations on the job front with prudence. Haste could cause further harm. A clear mind is a must for all these endeavors.

The Town of Hilton Head Island provides nearly 60 miles of public pathways and nature trails for the enjoyment of pedestrians and cyclists.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ON THE PATHS:

• Obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws.

• Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users.

• Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles.

• Do not ride on roads when a pathway is available.

• Ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists.

• WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you.

RECREATIONAL PATHWAYS GUIDE

• Yield to pedestrians. When resting or stopped, please move off the pathway.

• Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flashlight. Bicycles must have a red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night.

• When approaching slower pathway users from behind, please sound your warning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left.

• Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under.

• Make eye contact and use hand signals. Assume other bicyclists and motorists don’t see you. Hand signals tell motorists and other path users what you intend to do and will ensure everyone’s safety on the paths.

• Be courteous, alert and predictable.

• WHITE DIAMONDS INDICATE RESTRICTED TRAVEL LANE: Travel with the flow of traffic.

• WHITE STRIPE & STOP SIGN INDICATE ROAD CROSSING: Stop and look for motorists.

• YELLOW CENTER LINE INDICATES TWO-WAY TRAFFIC: Keep to the right.

• SEVERAL WHITE DIAGONAL STRIPES INDICATE A CROSSWALK: Watch out for other bicyclists, pedestrians and motorists.

• At low tide, the Island’s 12 miles of beaches are ideal for biking. Public beaches are indicated on the Island Events map.

• Our map also shows the existing public pathways. Many kiosks are located along the pathways with an Island-wide map on one side and a localized map of the area on the other.

ther sport coaches often focus on footwork, first teaching students to use cleats to grab on to the ground and then to push off.

There is also similarity in the design of a bat and a golf club, although maybe not as noticeable. The handle on both pieces of sporting equipment are light, while the head or barrel on the opposite end is heavy. It’s a design that lets your body tap into centrifugal force, the same power avid used to beat Goliath.

With practice and learned skill, you can see centrifugal force in action each time the bat, the club or the ball is released and physics takes over… The bat, the club and the ball accelerate thanks to skill and applied, simple science.

I’ve met a lot of people thanks to my love of golf, played with a lot of them too. Back in 1989 that included three days with MLB great and two-time World Series Winner Mark McGwire.

We spent a lot of time talking about the similarities between our favorite sports, golf and baseball. You see, Big Mac may be a 583 home run hitter, but he’s also a darn good golfer.

There are reasons. Both games require a rotary motion. Whether the swing of a golf club or the batting and throwing in baseball, the same muscles are being developed.

Those actions in both sports require a backward motion and a forward motion. lso, a need for practice and relaxed muscle memory; relaxed muscles following learned, second-nature skills create more speed and accuracy every time, verses tense muscles trying to force the club, bat and ball to comply.

These are just some of the reasons golf is attractive to people of all sizes! The golfer with smaller stature and refined skill can out play and out drive the big golfer with muscle and poor technique nearly every time.

July’s Best CATCHES

The large chunk of freshcut bait had scarcely touched bottom when the fish inhaled it and took off! As quickly as I moved the drag to the strike setting, the hefty rod bent double and went under the boat.

“Big brown, big brown!” my brother Don hollered, as the fish took to the air behind me. I could hear the large splash but was too busy bent over the side with the rod in the water trying to keep old big brown from rubbing the line against the hull and breaking off.

Don tilted the engine as I worked the fish back to my side of the boat and, after a few tense minutes of seesaw action between the line and the transducer, she was free once more.

As I handed the rod to my son Caleb, the fish broke water again.

The fish surged, taking line freely and I held on to 10-year-old Caleb. It weighed at least half as much as my son, who groaned because of the strong pull of the fish. Slowly we worked the cobia back to the boat after 10 minutes of back and forth, but when the fish saw the boat, the line peeled off the reel again, despite Caleb’s protests.

While the cobia action wanes by mid-June, there

are many other exciting species to be caught now. Near offshore on the reefs and in the creeks, the sheepshead are biting.

Also biting are Spanish mackerel and bluefish off the sandbars close to the beach. The action is usually fast and furious when you encounter school fish. In the same areas, large jack crevalle can be found, along with an occasional bull redfish.

Patrolling the bait and Spanish mackerel schools, you never know where the big brother of the Spanish, the king mackerel, may be lurking. Weighing between 15 and 60 pounds, this royalty puts up an exciting battle.

Last, but hardly least, the real July crowd pleasers, especially with the younger generation, are the sharks. We have many species of shark here: bulls, blacktips, duskies, scalloped or bonnet heads, sand, reef, sharp nose and more.

Most of these sharks will be in the four-to five-foot range, but there are larger ones to be had. Charters are available to go offshore for the massive tiger sharks, often 12 feet or larger! The smaller ones can be caught on short trips and offer lots of regular action, a priority for younger anglers. Sharks make for great vacation memories and, most of all, the kids love them!

Capt. Miles Altman of Bay Runner Fishing Charters has more than 50 years experience fishing the waters surrounding Hilton Head Island. Don’t miss the new Finatic boat, which can accommodate up to 12 passengers and features a special three-hour shark/dolphin eco-tour trip. Contact Miles at (843) 290-6955 to book an inshore or offshore charter fishing trip, departing from Shelter Cove Marina.
