5 Places on Hilton Head for the Nature Lover.

Want an authentic Hilton Head ecological experience? Don't miss out on these 5 must-see spots.

Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge

Pinckney Island, located between Hilton Head Island and Bluffton, SC, attracts over a quarter of a million visitors each year. This easily accessible island offers a range of wildlife-dependent activities, including hiking, biking, and wildlife watching. If you're a fan of fishing, you ll be happy to know that saltwater fishing is permitted in the surrounding waters. And for those interested in hunting, there is an annual one-day deer hunt held in the fall.

The Refuge offers a variety of opportunities to explore and enjoy the great outdoors from sunrise to sunset. You can hike, bicycle, observe wildlife, take pictures or go saltwater fishing.

Pinckney Island is a crucial stop along the Atlantic Flyway for thousands of migratory birds each year. This sanctuary is not only a haven for these feathered travelers, but also serves as a rookery for colonial wading birds like ibis, egrets, and herons. In addition to protecting birds and other wildlife from disturbance, a "no dogs" policy is in place. www.fws.gov/refuge/pinckney-island.

Jarvis Creek Park

Located off William Hilton Parkway on Jarvis Creek Road, this 53-acre park includes a large pond and one-mile walking trail around the lake and workout stations. The lakeside paths extend out into wooded areas. The paved trail is equipped with wooden bridges over marshy areas.

There is abundant wildlife along this short and paved adventure. Be mindful of allgators lounging on the banks of the lake and watch these amazing creatures from a safe distance. This is a great trail for birding and offers solitude during quieter times of day. The trail is open year-round and is beautiful to visit anytime. Dogs are welcome. www. hiltonheadislandsc.gov/parks/JarvisCreek

Audubon Newhall Preserve

The Audubon Newhall Preserve is a 50-acre nature preserve located on the south end of the Island that is owned and operated by the Hilton Head Island Audubon Society.

Even furry friends are welcome at the preserve, as long as they're leashed. Please clean up after your pets to help maintain the pristine environment. www.hiltonheadaudubon. org/audubon-newhall-preserve

Majestic Honey Horn

Starting at the Discovery House, a mile-long nature trail winds past some of the oldest

structures on Hilton Head Island. Three wooden boardwalks extend into the Jarvis Creek salt marsh, while fact-filled interpretive panels guide you. They offer information about our salt marshes and how Gullah Native Islanders relied on this rich ecosystem for food and commerce.

In the summer you will be enchanted by the region’s only native butterfly enclosure and experience the life cycle of local butterflies. n the winter you will fall in love with the Camellia Garden, which has over 130 different varieties in bloom from November to April. www.coastaldiscovery.org

Sea Pines Forest Preserve

For five decades, the Sea Pines Forest Preserve has remained a haven for wildlife and outdoor enthusiasts. With 605-acres of untouched beauty, this sanctuary boasts bridle paths, wetland boardwalks, bridges, and fishing docks. This expansive preserve, nestled within the Sea Pines Resort, offers countless opportunities for visitors to immerse themselves in its breathtaking landscapes.

HOROSCOPE JUNE 2024

ARIES So many chances to reconnect this month, Aries! Your social calendar will be full and you’ll run across so many people from the past. You’ll have solid relationships outside of your social circle, as well. Expect cooperation and collaboration on the job front and calm and resolution at home. Remember to also focus on you, your health and self-care.

TAURUS Prudence is wise this June, especially in financial matters. If it sounds too good to be true… It is! Use caution and restraint in all money matters, including major purchases. Instead, focus on creative endeavors. Your emotions and intuition will be high and could help you create something truly lasting and impactful.

GEMINI Your passions will be strong and could lead to self-doubt this month. Be slow to act, even in matters of changing your appearance. Maybe clean out your closet or look for a new workout class. Use the extra energy you feel to make plans for the summer. Don’t allow your finances to become overly involved.

The Town of Hilton Head Island provides nearly 60 miles of public pathways and nature trails for the enjoyment of pedestrians and cyclists.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ON THE PATHS:

• Obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws.

• Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users.

• Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles.

• Do not ride on roads when a pathway is available.

• Ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists.

• WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you.

RECREATIONAL PATHWAYS GUIDE

• Yield to pedestrians. When resting or stopped, please move off the pathway.

• Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flashlight. Bicycles must have a red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night.

• When approaching slower pathway users from behind, please sound your warning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left.

• Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under.

• Make eye contact and use hand signals. Assume other bicyclists and motorists don’t see you. Hand signals tell motorists and other path users what you intend to do and will ensure everyone’s safety on the paths.

• Be courteous, alert and predictable.

• WHITE DIAMONDS INDICATE RESTRICTED TRAVEL LANE: Travel with the flow of traffic.

• WHITE STRIPE & STOP SIGN INDICATE ROAD CROSSING: Stop and look for motorists.

• YELLOW CENTER LINE INDICATES TWO-WAY TRAFFIC: Keep to the right.

• SEVERAL WHITE DIAGONAL STRIPES INDICATE A CROSSWALK: Watch out for other bicyclists, pedestrians and motorists.

• At low tide, the Island’s 12 miles of beaches are ideal for biking. Public beaches are indicated on the Island Events map.

• Our map also shows the existing public pathways. Many kiosks are located along the pathways with an Island-wide map on one side and a localized map of the area on the other.

In my 30 years teaching and playing golf, perhaps the most important lesson I ’ve learned is that golf is for everyone. At Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy we’re teaching 3-year-olds to tee up the ball, make putts and swing while singing songs. We get to help the teenager that is not built for football or basketball find this sport and call it his own. And we get to help the ladies find their golf tribe and learn how fun it is to beat the guys.

Golf can be social, it can be physical, it can be for recreation and this summer, here’s some of what we have to offer for the entire family.

Junior Daily Clinic: Offered Sun. and Mon. at 11 a.m. and Tues. at 2 p.m. for kids 8 to 17 years-old. This introductory to intermediate class can help the kids fall in love with golf. Clubs are provided, $50 per class.

GOLF Is for Everybody!

Fresh Air, Sunshine and Tons of Family Fun. Come Join Us for a Summer Golf Clinic!

Ladies Only Class: Wed. at 10 a.m. join us for cheers and fun as you improve your golf game with a focus on skill and movement, rather than strength. Women are built for this game and this class can empower you to unlock your dominance. $50 per class.

Family Golf Class: The whole family learning together with the first hour focusing on the basics in the practice area and the second on the course playing/training with the pro. Available each day at 4 p.m. $350 up to four people, $50 for each additional. Video and photo memories are included.

Family Golf School: Three-day golf intensive designed for togetherness, memories and development of all skill levels. Two hours of instruction are included per day with unlimited practice and 9-holes of golf. Flexible scheduling at $1,690 for up to six. Video and photo memories are included.

Lil Swingers: A perfect introduction to golf offered Mon. from 5:15-6 p.m. for ages 3 to 7 years. Parents participate and clubs are included. We learn through songs focusing on instruction, rhythm, routine to success. $50 per student swinger.

Free Golf Clinic and Exhibition: Offered every Mon. at 4 p.m. This FREE weekly clinic is interactive, hands on, fun and beneficial for all skill levels. Get a brief lesson for FREE or volunteer for an exhibition and maybe win a prize.

North Carolina and South Carolina PGA Teacher of the Year, Doug Weaver is the Director of Instruction at the Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy. Wrens

owcountry marshes are vibrant places in spring and summer. The beautiful bubbly song of the Marsh Wren adds to the majestic nature of our environment. Keep an eye — and an ear — out for these abundant small marsh birds.

Marsh Wrens, Cistothorus palustris, are small brown-and-yellow birds with thin bills, a dark cap and white eye lines that tend to hold their tails upright, much like the common Carolina Wren. Weighing up to .5 ounces and growing up to five inches long, they make short flights throughout our Lowcountry marshes, but are more commonly seen jumping through the grass tips, as they maintain their territory and care for their young.

Spread throughout most of North America, Marsh Wrens are usually found in freshwater, saltwater and brackish marshes. Considered migratory throughout the majority of the United States, they can be found in our area year-round. Marsh Wrens are most notable from March to August, due to their high frequency of vocalizations, which coincides with their breeding season. Although still in our area during the fall and winter months, they are much less noticeable.

These small birds are very active foragers. Their main diet consists of insects of all kinds, including larvae, spiders and snails. They forage in dense growths of spartina grass (marsh grass) for insects that cling to the stalks, and also catch prey in the air with short, fast flights over the surface of the water.

At the beginning of the breeding season, a male declares his territory through song. He then continues to defend his territory by singing at rival males. To lower the competition, males poke holes in the eggs of other wrens, as well as other varietal bird

species. Within his territory, a male may build up to 20 different nests — oval-shaped baskets made out of dead wet grasses, woven into the tops of the marsh grass. These nests usually have a side-door entrance for camouflage and efficiency. Very few of the nests will be used to rear young, but often stand as decoys for predators, or used by adults during non-nesting seasons.

A male wren sings to entice females into his territory. Marsh Wrens are not monogamous and may have two or more partners at a time. Upon a female’s arrival, the male will show her each of the nests within his range. A female chooses a male after accessing his territory, nests and the competition of other females. She then selects her favorite nest and lines it with grass, plant down and feathers.

After laying four to five brown-speckled eggs, the female incubates the eggs for up to 16 days. Once hatched, both parents forage to feed the young. After another 16 days, the newly hatched chicks leave the nest. A single female will have up to two broods a year.

Marsh Wren numbers have been increasing since 1966. They are considered a species of little concern, other than within the state of Michigan. They can be highly affected by habitat destruction due to pollution or construction. Maintaining marsh habitats is vital for their survival and these birds will happily inhabit restored wetlands.

In pursuit of the KING MACKEREL

One of the most awesome sights on the ocean is a free-jumping king mackerel, often referred to as a “skyrocket.” These shiny silver missiles easily reach heights of fifteen to twenty feet above the water. Often, they will skyrocket on live or trolled bait, eating around even the most clever double-hook rigs or treble hooks, and leaving anglers shaking their heads in amazement.

June’s warmer waters call to the kings, as they are teaming with menhaden you can see right off the beach. Spanish mackerel, the kings’ smaller cousins, also run the coast in large schools, and are one of the kings’ favorite meals. These schools of Spanish close to shore draw the Smokers — king mackerel thirty pounds and up — much to the delight of fishermen with smaller boats.

for the fight but light enough to fool this wily creature. Kings have excellent eyesight, and the lighter the leader, the better your chances. Occasionally, however, I have lost a monster king (50 pounds+) when it cut through my light wire like butter.

Smaller kings called “snakes,” typically fifteen pounds or less, are usually found offshore in larger schools. Here, “bump” trolling is a favored method: live baits are pulled slowly across the fishing grounds, the motor taken out of gear from time to time so as not to put too much pressure on the live menhaden or small fish. Kings can also be caught trolling top-water baits or down deep using planers or heavy leads.

No matter how you go about it, the hunt for these silver torpedoes is hard to beat for a tackle-busting good time!

When not “skyrocketing” on the bait, the strike of the king can be bone jarring. What follows next are long, searing runs that test the best of tackle. I recommend medium to heavy gear with 30-50 pound braid, with at least a couple of hundred yards. Even then, be prepared to hoist the anchor and give chase!

Still, seasoned anglers grapple with striking the right balance of tackle heavy enough
