Island Trails Walking Paths

TAKE the time to enjoy these trails

Green’s Shell Enclosure:

The 3-acre Green’s Shell Enclosure Heritage Preserve is an archaeological site dating back to 1335 A.D. This trail is located near the nothern top of Hilton Head Island, just off of Squire Pope Rd.

From the parking area, you will walk on a road to this short, easy trail, which will take you into the past. You will pass a cemetery and cross over a ramp to an overlook at the end of the trail. Green’s Shell Enclosure is a low earthen embankment, two- to sixfeet high, that dates back to the Irene Period of 1300 to 1450 A.D. Covering two acres, this embankment was once a fortified village built by farmers who used shells for everything from tools to objects used for religious rituals.

Stay on the trail and do not remove anything from this preserve. Bring insect repellent during the warm months.

Hours: Dawn to dusk

Directions on Hilton Head Island: From the intersection of US 278 and Squire Pope Rd., turn left into Greens Park. Entrance to the preserve is on the left at the gate. Go around the gate and walk on the road past the cemetery to the entrance ramp.

Jarvis Creek Leisure Loop:

The Leisure Loop at Jarvis Creek Park is an easy .85 mile paved loop. The loop starts behind the restrooms. There’s a small pier at the start of the trail with access to a dock. If you start off counterclockwise, you’ll pass a fitness station to your left.

Pathways extend all over the park and around the lake creating a 1.1 mile loop. Runners, joggers and walkers are all welcome to explore the lakeside paths that extend out into wooded areas. This paved trail is equipped with wooden bridges over marshy areas, so no one has to get their feet too dirty.

There are nine pieces of outdoor training equipment in a peaceful area behind a live oak, and the park was designed with exercising in mind! Each station has a set of instructions that explains how to use the equipment and perform the exercise. You even get a beautiful view of the lake while you’re strengthening your core.

Hours: Dawn to dusk.

Directions: Located off of William Hilton Pkwy.

Audubon Newhall Preserve:

The Hilton Head Island Audubon Society owns and operates the Audubon Newhall Preserve, located on Palmetto Bay Rd. It is open to the public at no charge.

The Audubon Newhall Preserve is a series of short, easy walking, interconnected trails through a fifty acre nature preserve. A trail guide is available at the entrance. You will see a wide variety of trees and plants, from Florida scrub to native hardwoods. A feature of the preserve is a rare pocosin (the Indian word for bog), which was once a characteristic feature of barrier islands.

Hours: Dawn to dusk

Directions: From US 278 near the entrance to Hilton Head Island: Turn right onto the Cross Island Parkway. When you reach Palmetto Bay Rd., watch for the Audubon Newhall Preserve sign on the right. From US 278 on the south part of the Island: Drive west to the traffic circle and turn right onto Palmetto Bay Rd. Look for the sign on the left.

Sea Pines Forest Preserve:

An easy walk or ride through a maritime forest and marshland in this protected pre-

serve. The preserve has a 4,000-year-old Indian shell ring, a wild flower meadow with do ens of flower varieties, fresh water lakes suitable for fishing and a bountiful bird habitat.

Shade is plentiful during the summer months. Restrooms, drinking water and a picnic area are available in the center of the preserve at Fish Island.

The land has been sculpted by changing sea levels over the past 15,000 years and traces of the first inhabitants still remain. The Indian Shell Ring is 4,000-years-old and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Length: Approximately 2 miles of walking/hiking nature trails and 6 miles of multi-purpose trails

Fees: There is a (per car) fee to enter Sea Pines Resort.

Directions: From the entrance to Hilton Head Island: Drive on US 278 and turn right onto the Cross Island Parkway. Continue to the traffic circle on Palmetto Bay Rd and turn right onto Greenwood Dr. The Sea Pines' gate is in 0.2 miles and the preserve is 1 mile from the gate on the left.

A Day onthe Water

Life on Hilton Head Island revolves around the water, and few places offer so many opportunities to enjoy this liquid asset. From Broad Creek to the Calibogue Sound, the Intracoastal Waterway to the Atlantic Ocean, freshwater lagoons to brackish backwaters, you’re just moments away from a great day on the water.

Launch & Land

A perfect day on the water begins and ends at any of the Island’s many marinas, which feature an array of watersports, boat rentals, tackle shops, fishing charters and ecotours, as well as signature restaurants, shopping and entertainment. Explore the famous candystriped Lighthouse in Harbour Town, the Mediterranean mood of Shelter Cove Harbour, the New England-style fishing village of South Beach Marina, the Key West feel of Palmetto Bay Marina and the rustic charm of Broad Creek Marina, Skull Creek Marina and Hilton Head Harbor.

Bike the Beach

Hilton Head Island’s 12 miles of hard-packed, white-sand beaches provide the perfect playground for any age, at any time of year. Rent a beach cruiser to explore the strand at your own pace. Locals know that low tide is the perfect time to ride along the beach, when the sand is flat and hardpacked.

Dolphin Days

Have you ever seen Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphin in the wild?

Don’t miss the chance to take a local dolphin tour, where you’ll see dolphin in their natural habitat and learn about their amazing behavior. A dolphin tour offers a familyfriendly way to spend the day out on the water and to see these incredible mammals in action.

Reel Fun

Bait your hook and head out for a day of deep sea, inshore or shark fishing with experienced boat captains who know the secret spots. Or drop a line into the nearest lagoon, cast a shrimp net or try surf fishing on the beach to see what you can catch (and release!) this season.

Sail Away

Let the wind fill your sails as you salute the sunset on a Happy Hour Cruise, hail a water taxi to neighboring Daufuskie Island, spend a few hours or all day sightseeing, sign up for sailing lessons or rent a boat to play your way.

Go Wild

A natural setting for adventure, the Island is home to an amazing array of animals. Enjoy a shark fishing excursion, alligator adventure or bird-watching tour to view the Island’s wild inhabitants.

Paddle Time

Experience the Island’s wildlife up close on a guided kayak or canoe trip through calm tidal creeks and Lowcountry marshlands. Choose from customized family adventures, corporate retreats, team building exercises or camps for kids, tweens and teens. Just don’t forget your camera to capture picture-perfect moments.

Fly High

Get an unforgettable bird’s-eye view of the Lowcountry on a helicopter ride, or spend a few thrilling hours on an aerial adventure. Enjoy a two-hour zipline canopy tour along glistening Broad Creek or an aerial adventure with a high ropes challenge course. Whichever you choose, you’ll get an amazing view of the Island and all its beauty.

The Town of Hilton Head Island provides nearly 60 miles of public pathways and nature trails for the enjoyment of pedestrians and cyclists.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ON THE PATHS:

• Obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws.

• Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users.

• Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles.

• Do not ride on roads when a pathway is available.

• Ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists.

• WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you.

RECREATIONAL PATHWAYS GUIDE

• Yield to pedestrians. When resting or stopped, please move off the pathway.

• Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flashlight. Bicycles must have a red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night.

• When approaching slower pathway users from behind, please sound your warning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left.

• Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under.

• Make eye contact and use hand signals. Assume other bicyclists and motorists don’t see you. Hand signals tell motorists and other path users what you intend to do and will ensure everyone’s safety on the paths.

• Be courteous, alert and predictable.

• WHITE DIAMONDS INDICATE RESTRICTED TRAVEL LANE: Travel with the flow of traffic.

• WHITE STRIPE & STOP SIGN INDICATE ROAD CROSSING: Stop and look for motorists.

• YELLOW CENTER LINE INDICATES TWO-WAY TRAFFIC: Keep to the right.

• SEVERAL WHITE DIAGONAL STRIPES INDICATE A CROSSWALK: Watch out for other bicyclists, pedestrians and motorists.

• At low tide, the Island’s 12 miles of beaches are ideal for biking. Public beaches are indicated on the Island Events map.

• Our map also shows the existing public pathways. Many kiosks are located along the pathways with an Island-wide map on one side and a localized map of the area on the other.

4 Ways GOLF is Changing

1.Kids are starting younger.

We’ll probably never know how much of this is the Tiger Woods' effect, but kids are starting younger these days, and it’s becoming apparent that there’s a lot these little tots can do! Youth programs, Little Swingers (ages 3-7) and Junior classes are getting kids out on the green, starting them on the fundamentals, and helping young students of the game build their confidence and refine their technique.

2.Generations of families are learning together.

Golf is an exceptional way to spend quality time with family. I’ve watched countless moms and dads, grandparents, siblings and beyond get closer as they bond over their love for their game, their taste for a challenge and time in the great outdoors.

3.The clothes and gear just keep getting better.

Golf gear and apparel are relatively specific, but the variety of styles and the quality

just keep improving. Constantly evolving performance gear just means more ways golfers can be comfortable, stay on top of their game and express their individuality.

4.TopTracer has changed the name of the game.

Embracing the power of technology has really revolutionized learning, practicing, playing and enjoying golf. Just in the last several years, TopTracer has made the most advanced ball-tracking technology in the sport available to all! It’s the same technology that tracks and displays ball flight in real time during golf’s biggest tournaments and it’s revolutionizing how golfers of all levels are honing their game.

local snake population to largely disappear. However, if you happen to spot a venomous snake, or any snake for that matter, it is best to exercise caution and leave the reptile alone.

This is by far the most popular question guests ask onboard the H2O Alligator and Nature Tours in the Sea Pines Forest Preserve.

While there are many different species of snakes inhabiting Hilton Head Island, a few stand out. Species that draw the most attention and concern are venomous—copperheads, water moccasins (cottonmouths) and Eastern diamondback rattlesnakes.

Though these are the primary attention-grabbers, many nonvenomous species also live here. Examples include king snakes, corn snakes, rough green tree snakes and many others. These reptiles are a delicate link in the indigenous food chain and, not only play a vital role in controlling rodent populations, but keep various other animal species from overpopulating.

While encountering a venomous snake on a vacation in Hilton Head is not impossible, it is more likely you will not see a snake at all while visiting the Island. Decades of development and construction have caused the

Snakes usually come into contact with humans by accident, and like nothing more than to retreat and go about their business. Those who practice keeping a safe distance rarely, if ever, experience any problems.

Fear and anxiousness concerning snakes is understandable, but there is a need for education and awareness regarding the reptiles inhabiting Hilton Head Island. Snakes play a vital role in sustaining the natural order of things. Construction, plus hostile practices toward the Island snake population, have made encountering snakes a rare experience. The Sea Pines Forest Preserve is unique in that it is a sanctuary for Hilton Head Island wildlife, and one of the few places one consistently sees a variety of local organisms (sometimes even snakes) in their natural environment.

Our Alligator Tour guides are specially trained to recognize, identify and explain reptiles and their behavior to guests. It is common to see a rough green tree snake on a tour, and guests can get up close and personal with this harmless, beautiful creature. Serving as snake ambassadors, they display a rich lime green color that camouflages them with the surrounding vegetation. Guests lucky enough to experience these animals always enjoy the thrill of holding a wild snake in their hands!

We hope you choose to experience the H2O Alligator and Wildlife Tour and learn more about snakes and other animals, and how we protect our natural resources.

H2O Sports is a great place to spark curiosity and inspire learning through adventure. For details on water activities, go towww.H2OSports.com.

The LOVEABLE Dolphin

Hilton Head is famous for its yearround population of dolphin. While most groups of these mammals migrate seasonally, Lowcountry dolphins enjoy the mild water temperatures here all months. apidly warming waters between the local islands in June bring these magnificent creatures closer to shore to hunt, which makes June one of the best months of the year to get outside and watch dolphins.

esearch on dolphins and their behaviors took off in the middle of the last century. The further scientists, like Jacques Cousteau, explored the biology and sociology of these animals, the more incredible findings were revealed. Dolphins were found to have unusually large brains, a complicated social structure, highly intelligent hunting techniques and a very interesting skin.

The rubbery skin of the dolphin is extremely sensitive. The area around their head, blowhole and beak has a really high concentration of nerve endings. This helps them perceive nearby prey in waters with low visibility. Their sensitive skin also

factors into their social lives, which is why people often see related dolphins rubbing against one another. In rare cases, dolphin will also rub their bodies on rubber boats for a similar effect.

Dolphin skin is distinct from other mammals because it does not contain any sweat glands and is totally hairless. Beneath the thin outer surface of skin cells is a thick layer of blubber, which contributes to their buoyancy and keeps them warm in deeper cold water. Dolphins spend the majority of the day hunting fatty fish, which keep this blubber layer stocked.

Dolphins are renowned as incredibly fast swimmers, reaching recorded speeds of over knots. For the most part, this is due to the large and powerful muscles that run the full length of their body. But their skin also contributes to this hydrodynamic performance, as it is covered in folds that direct water to flow seamlessly over their bodies. The thin outer layer of skin is constantly flaking off and being replaced by new cells. In fact, dolphins replace all of their outer skin cells every two hours. This skin regeneration keeps the dolphin epidermis soft and sleek.

Deep

Battle in the Deep Blue

The calm sea exploded around the skipping ballyhoo, the rod bucked wildly and the fish took to the air. There was no doubt we were hooked up to the most beautiful fish inhabiting the deep blue waters of the Gulf Stream: the dolphin (fish), more commonly known as mahi-mahi.

Young Robert Lyon, the third generation of Lyon family members I’ve had the honor to fish with over the years, took up the rod and, after a great battle, Capt. Bryan Benson aced a nice gaff shot. Dinner was in the box. It was midday, and we had just arrived at our destination some 90 miles off the coast of Hilton Head.

The calm seas promised for the morning were late, and we found our way offshore, stopping at Navy Towers R7 and R8 looking for some action. We were not disappointed, having jagged up some amberjacks that provided tough, bulldog battles for young Robert and my son Caleb. We also had a wolf pack of cobia circling the boat for awhile, but had no success in getting them to take the bait. Huge schools of spadefish, barracuda and mutton snapper offered up an aquarium experience that is all but guaranteed in the clear waters around these towers. However, now we were in the Gulf Stream, our original destination, and the sea had flattened. With young Robert’s fish in the box, Capt. Bryan and I redeployed the bait as the senior Robert Lyon started working the boat up and down a spotty sargassum weed line.

We spotted some blackfin tuna jumping around the weed—a good sign—and were soon rewarded with another explosion on the skipping bait. The line poured off the reel,

and I wondered if it was one of the tough football-shaped blackfins we had sighted. The fish burst from the water with a huge headshaking jump and, again, there was no mistake…a big bull dolphin.

Caleb was on the rod this time and finally living a dream. For years, my son had told me, “I really want to catch a bull dolphin!”

The back-and-forth battle went on for 20 minutes, accented by many aerial escapades by the bull. As the battle neared the end, we admired the gold, green and blue colors of this amazing fish as he jumped and swam only feet from the boat. Capt. Bryan aced another great gaff shot just in time, as Caleb announced the fish was wearing him down. But, he prevailed, and his dream became a reality with a nice catch—a 25-pound bull dolphin!

Young Robert caught another large mahi and, while we set no records that afternoon, it was certainly a wonderful day. Two youngsters bending a rod is always a fun experience and fishing with my son and young Robert’s father brings back good memories of casting a line with one of my favorite people of all time: the senior Bob Lyon.

Great people, great day!

ARIES If you’ve been longing to express yourself more fully but don’t know how to begin, ask yourself first what it is exactly you want to communicate. Then, be on the lookout for articles of clothing, words, songs and colors that speak to you. Be your own mood board!

TAURUS Let’s face it, Taurus, you’re overbooked. The good news is, you don’t have to stay that way! Instead of saying yes to everything, try starting with a maybe. This is an important season of renewal and a great time to be out and about, but you will need some time to yourself as well if you want to stay balanced and centered.

GEMINI If you’re wondering when to start gardening, sewing or the other manual project you’ve been mulling over, the time is now. Hibernation is over, and your body is primed for a challenge!

LIBRA If you’re feeling a little lost in time, you’re not alone. Losing your sense of where you are and what you’re supposed to be doing can be rough, but it’s also a place that tends to shelter some pretty intense creative impulses. Don’t be afraid to see where this takes you.

SCORPIO The situation that you’re perceiving as “life or death” right now really isn’t. Take a step back and look at it objectively. When you’ve put it into perspective, ask yourself: how do you actually figure into this drama? Is it something you can turn down a notch?

SAGITTARIUS All hail the sunny Sagittarius! This month will be a bright spot so get excited! Your task will be to let go of some of the anxiety you’ve been clutching and just let in the good stuff.

CANCER

You may be feeling pretty raw about something that has happened to a friend, so make a little space for their pain and yours. When you’re finished, be sure to take a moment for gratitude, which will lead you to your next move.

LEO You may be about to hit paydirt, Leo. How exciting! In all things, remembering your values will help guide the way. Don’t forget to stay humble.

VIRGO You’re on some kind of time crunch and when the clock stops, it’s go time. For best results, stay open, flexible, and out of your head!

CAPRICORN If it feels like someone nearby is gunning for you, you might be right. Consider, though, that it may not be about you at all. Either way, this anger or frustration doesn’t need to belong to you as well. For now, let it slide right off your back.

AQUARIUS Get ready for some unexpected fun this month! The best part is, you won’t need to prepare or bring a thing beyond your own dazzle and your willingness to try new things.

PISCES You may feel like you’re all over the place this month, but that may just be part of summertime for you, this year. Embrace the best parts and leave the less exciting tasks for when you’re craving a quiet moment or two at home.

•Wear sunglasses to prevent damage from the sun.

•Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water.

•Be aware of the rules and regulations of the beach. Signs are posted near most beach accesses.

•Know the name of the beach or hotel/ condo and the beach marker number where you are staying if you should need assistance.

•There are often jellyfish and stingrays, as well as other sea life in and out of the water, which may sting or cut a person. In any situation where first aid is needed, find a lifeguard or seek further medical attention.

•Call or wave for help if you are in trouble.

Water Safety Tips:

•Don’t enter the water if you can’t swim.

•Swim near a lifeguard.

•Ask the lifeguard about any dangers in the water or on the beach, especially if he or she is flying a yellow caution flag.

•Be aware of direction and strength of longshore currents. These currents can take you up and down the beach quickly and cause you or your kids to get lost.

•Don’t let your kids swim unsupervised even in guarded areas.

•Don’t swim alone. Use the buddy system so that someone always knows where you are so they can get help if needed.

•Don’t overestimate your swimming ability. Stay in chest-deep or less water to insure you don’t get stuck in water over your head.
