mazing ppellations Understanding wine names, blends and more. By Georgene Mortimer, Island Winery
M
any famous wines are named for their appellation, or the region where they are grown.
To use an appellation name, the grapes must be grown in that region and must be made from specific grapes. Take the Burgundy appellation, for example. There are only two grapes permitted there: Chardonnay is the only white grape, and Pinot Noir is the only red. Likewise, if you produce Chardonnay or Pinot Noir outside of Burgundy, you cannot call the wine a Burgundy. Since Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are well-known grapes, recognizing these wines grown outside the region is easy, because the wine can simply be named after the grape. However, some of the best French wines are, in fact, blends of several grapes. Under the same appellation rules, it becomes more challenging to offer these wines outside the region, while still recognizing their merits. Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a great example. Châteauneuf-du-Pape is an appellation in the Rhône River Valley in Southern France, named after the area around Avignon, where the Papal court was temporarily located in the 14th century. Red Châteauneufdu-Pape is the most popular wine from the region. White Châteauneuf-du-Pape is also delicious, but is lesser known. The Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation allows for an extraordinary blend of up to 18 grapes. The ability to blend grapes allows for the creation of a perfectly balanced wine, by playing the natural qualities of the grapes off one another. Each individual grape adds a unique component to the aroma, taste and structure of the wine. While it is possible to create this wine outside the area, it is challenging to market these wines when you cannot use the Châteauneuf-du-Pape name.
14 Island Events March 2020
Luckily, the essence of a red Châteauneufdu-Pape can be captured in a blend of three grapes. Grown outside the region, they are often referred to as “GSM” blends, after the three dominant grapes: Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre. In a true Châteauneuf-duPape, Grenache is the predominant grape, blended with equal amounts of Syrah and Mourvedre. Other grapes typically contribute less than 5 percent of the blend. Grenache provides bright acids, a fragrant aroma and a ruby color. Syrah adds in peppery aromas, structure and the ability to age well. Mourvedre deepens the color and adds earthy flavors and a unique “chewy” texture. While a traditional Châteauneuf-duPape is unmatched, other wine regions have created excellent versions, with Australia and Southern California leading the way. Since GSM grapes thrive in warm temperatures, it is not surprising that warm-climate vineyards are producing exceptional GSM wines. Look for wines produced in the Barossa and McLaren Vale regions of Southern Australia and in vineyards in Paso Robles, California. Sometimes these wines are easy to identify because they are labeled as Grenache-Syrah. Other times, they may be trickier to identify because they are sold under a unique label name, with a description of the grapes in the fine print. So, it’s helpful to do a bit of research before you purchase a GSM. Châteauneuf-du-Pape and its GSM cousins are highly food-friendly, reasonably priced wines and worth a try. The perfect bottle of hand-crafted artisan wine awaits at Island Winery on Cardinal Rd. Wine by the glass, cheese platters and $5 tastings are available Monday-Saturday from 12:30-5:30 p.m. and Sunday from 12-4 p.m. (843) 842-3141 or www.islandwinery.com. hiltonhead.com

Horoscope MARCH 2020 ARIES Where is your joie de vivre these days, Aries? Perhaps it’s being ground down to a nub by repetition, menial tasks and general stress. Find a place where your particular skill set makes the world a little better, and let your spark of happiness re-ignite. You won’t regret it.
LIBRA What’s your biggest vice? You can probably answer that for your loved ones, but do you recognize your own weaknesses? Consider how this tendency to see flaws in others, but not in yourself, can cause problems. Work on self-improvement this month.
TAURUS You might be feeling like a supporting character in your own life this month, but don’t despair. If your own storyline is lacking in plot, adventure or romance, don’t be afraid to write yourself a better one. Make the most of every moment this month.
SCORPIO In Spain, diners linger at the table after dinner and visit as part of a connective ritual for families and friends. This month, find times to incorporate a little bit of this ritual into your own life. Take the time to linger and reconnect with the people who matter most.
GEMINI You’re feeling swamped and overburdened this month. Have you considered that this might, in part, be due to the (over) abundance of stuff surrounding you? Do some spring cleaning, and send some of that chronic stress packing.
SAGITTARIUS Feeling low? Jump-start your perspective by connecting with someone less fortunate. Giving back is so important, and a powerful reminder of how much you truly have to offer. You’ll learn something new about yourself when you least expect it this month.
CANCER This month, a big change has you reeling. How can you use this revelation to open up your life, improve your prospects and live your life in a better, smarter way? Look for the proverbial silver lining—you will find it when you need it most. LEO Often, the people who drive us the craziest are those who exhibit characteristics that we know we have. Face this truth and work to eradicate that behavior in yourself. One relationship, in particular, will improve dramatically this month, if you’re open to change. VIRGO In our high-tech society, it’s become easy to express our frustration by typing a few choice words from our phones. Take a moment to consider how you would feel if all of your communications were suddenly out in the open and adjust your language accordingly. 28 Island Events March 2020
CAPRICORN Don’t forget to smile. It will give you an entirely different energy and bring light into the lives of those you see every day. An unexpected setback this month will bring fresh faces and new perspectives into your life. AQUARIUS You may find yourself idling too much this month. Left unchecked, this sedentary behavior could really dampen your mood. Seek out activities that make you feel happy and invite a friend along. You will each find something you’ve been seeking. PISCES Do you allow yourself moments to savor a hot cup of tea, listen to the rain or watch the clouds move across the sky? Don’t miss out on the opportunity to quiet your mind and re-center your heart. hiltonhead.com

RECREATIONAL PATHWAYS GUIDE The Town of Hilton Head Island provides nearly 60 miles of public pathways and nature trails for the enjoyment of pedestrians and cyclists.
RULES FOR THE ROAD: • Please obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws. • Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users. • Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles. • Please do not ride on roads when a pathway is available. • Please ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists. • WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you. • Please yield to pedestrians. When resting or stopped, please move off the pathway. 32 Island Events March 2020
• Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flashlight. Bicycles must have a red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night. • When approaching slower pathway users from behind, please sound your warning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left. • Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under. • Make eye contact and use hand signals. Assume other bicyclists and motorists don’t see you. Hand signals tell motorists and other path users what you intend to do and will ensure everyone’s safe enjoyment of the paths. Be courteous, alert and predictable.

Fis Fishing for Sheepshead She Fiddler crabs are irresistible to these black-and-white striped bait thieves. By Miles Altman, Bayrunner Fishing Charters
Photo provided by Capt. Miles Altman
O
ne must love March – or at least I do. The cold, gloomy winter weather is passing, and the promising signs of new life are showing. We’ve had a very mild winter this year, and the best trout fishing spree we’ve seen in probably 10 years. Large speckled trout were being caught easily, and many anglers finished their trips with the legal limit. In an effort to rebuild the stock, South Carolina’s Department of Natural Resources is asking anglers to release flounder, as the stocks seem so low. Voluntary conservation is so much better than legal limits, as the science is not easy to dial-in with fisheries. Well, so much for the bad news. Let’s get back to the promise of spring. My favorite fish to catch, bluewater species aside, is the master bait thief, the cunning and most clever of the inshore species: the sheepshead. To coin a worn-out phrase, the best method to catch one of these tasty battlers is to “hook him before he bites.” Sporting a set of molars that can crush mussels and barnacles with ease, the sheepshead can make taking a tasty fiddler crab off your hook a simple endeavor .
50 Island Events March 2020
Fiddlers seem to be irresistible to these stocky, black-and-white-striped bruisers, so they are the preferred bait. Try fishing alongside bridges or pilings, with a short leader and an egg sinker above the rig, just enough weight to hold in the current. I also use this same rig on the offshore reefs. If you anchor above the structure, you can drop the sinker so it sits just off the bottom. Keep tension on the line, along with a keen eye on your rod tip, for the telltale tap of a bite. Once you see it, chances are you’ve already been taken by the crafty sheepshead. Rebait and repeat. With a couple of hundred fiddlers and some practice, you will enjoy a great battle and some of the best-eating fish you ever will wrap your lips around. See ya out on the water! Capt. Miles Altman of Bayrunner Fishing Charters has more than 42 years experience fishing the waters surrounding Hilton Head Island. The Finatic boat, which can accommodate up to 12 passengers, features a special three-hour shark/dolphin eco-tour trip. Contact Miles at (843) 2906955 to book an unforgettable inshore or offshore charter fishing trip, departing from Shelter Cove Marina. hiltonhead.com

Romantic Outdoor Experiences
Here are a few creative ideas to get outside and explore nature with your loved one. By Anneliza Itkor, Outside Hilton Head
V
alentine’s Day has come and gone. Enormous amounts of energy have gone into planning special romantic evenings that included roses, chocolates and dinners with champagne. Lovely? Sure. Original? Not really. If you’re looking to create a genuinely romantic experience that is truly unique, you need only look as far as the great outdoors. As the temperatures begin to warm, think about renting a kayak for you and your honey and heading out into the salt marsh an hour or so before sunset. For starters, paddling a double kayak together can be a crash course in trust and communication. Working together to navigate your kayak can teach you how to function as a team and bring to light interesting dynamics in your relationship. Plus, you can experience the incredible flora and fauna of Hilton Head Island’s tidal ecosystem, while the brilliant colors of the sunset dance across the sky and reflect in the water. Well, you can’t get much more romantic than that. If you’re looking for something even more romantic than a sunset cruise for two, try a guided moonlight paddle. Imagine paddling along in the golden moonlight, listening to the fascinating nocturnal creatures coming to life all around you. Looking for a daylight frolic with your love? Consider packing a picnic and exploring 52 Island Events March 2020
Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge. Pinckney Island has a rich history, but in 1975, then-owners James Barker and Edward Starr donated the island and many of the smaller surrounding islands to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, with the condition that they be used as a National Wildlife Refuge. Now you can grab some crusty bread, stinky cheese and a bottle of wine and spend an exciting day with your boo in the wild. Imagine the two of you checking out the snowy egret and little blue heron chicks at Starr Pond. Or experiencing the wonder of walking through tens of thousands of fiddler crabs on the high marsh flats. From the butterfly garden to the miles of trail, there are countless settings that offer awesome, shared experiences. One of the most romantic outside venues is one of the best-kept secrets in Bluffton. Grab your guy or girl and discover the beauty of the 22,000 acres that comprise Palmetto Bluff. Rent an electric bike and ride under the breathtaking Avenue of the Oaks. Climb to the top of the five-story treehouse to take in the stunning views and to shoot one of the coolest selfies ever! Rent two paddleboards for a lazy float along the May River and wrap up a magical day with a scrumptious meal at one of Palmetto Bluff’s incredible restaurants. When you live on, or are visiting, one of the most beautiful places in the world, creating a special day for your significant other can be as simple as stepping out the door. Experience Golf the Correct Way
By Doug Weaver, Director of Instruction, Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy
Learn techniques that will help you excel on the green and beyond. You’ve probably heard many stories about the difficulty of golf from people who didn’t learn the game correctly. Many mediocre golfers attempted to teach themselves by reading books, watching videos, listening to friends and watching TV. However, the best way to learn golf is to experience the correct techniques under the supervision of instructors who have many years of professional experience. We are ready for you at the Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy. Our nurturing coaches will have you experiencing the exhilaration of a correct golf shot. Here are a few common statements I’ve heard from people experiencing my golf lessons: • • • • • • • • •
"I can do this." "This is easier than I thought." “That does not hurt.” “I get it now.” “When I swing slow, the ball goes fast.” “Why didn’t I do this 20 years ago?” "Grandpa, let’s play golf!" “This is fun.” “I didn’t know a golf swing felt like this.”
This month, I invite you to experience golf the correct way. You’ll be amazed at the difference it makes in your game. I would like to thank Golf Digest magazine for, once again, recognizing me as a Top Golf Instructor in South Carolina. Also, a special thank you to the PGA of North Carolina and South Carolina for awarding me the Teacher of the Year honor. These awards are a reflection of the students and the staff who surround me throughout the year. Remember that now is the time to enjoy golf correctly. There’s no time like the present. See you out on the green! A former PGA Tour pro and member of the local golf Hall of Fame, Doug Weaver is the Director of Instruction at the Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy. He conducts “Where Does the Power Come From?”, a free clinic and demonstration, every Monday at 4 p.m. Learn more at www.palmettodunes.com/ golf/hilton-head-golf-instruction or by calling (844) 207-9258. 54 Island Events March 2020

Neptune K Statue
at Shelter Cove Harbour he towering 12-foot bronze statue of Neptune, which doubles as a largerthan-life sundial, serves as an iconic symbol of Shelter Cove Harbour at Palmetto Dunes, welcoming visitors to the entrance of the popular waterfront dining and shopping location.
T
Designed and installed by sculptor Wayne Edwards, this much-loved statue serves as a tribute to Neptune, the Roman god of the sea. The King Neptune statue, which depicts a bearded Neptune holding his signature trident, serves as a popular centerpiece at Shelter Cove Harbour. The statue is strategically mounted on a circular base with numbers around the edge. When the trident’s shadow falls across the 26-foot-wide base, the numbers indicate the precise time. Hailed as the world’s largest figurative sundial, the statue was originally cast at a foundry in Princeton, New Jersey, and shipped by truck to Hilton Head Island in 1983. Engineers made meticulous measure ments before the one-ton statue was installed, ensuring that it would be located at the ideal angle to indicate the time. They oriented the sculpture towards true south by aligning the constellation Ursa Major with the North Star. An official dedication for the statue was held at Shelter Cove Harbour on August 11, 1983, attracting residents and visitors alike. Today, the King Neptune statue delights generations of visitors to Shelter Cove Harbour, impressing adults and children of all ages. Stop by to see King Neptune in person and to experience a true Hilton Head Island icon.
