HILTON HEAD HISTORY Hilton Head Island has a long and rich history of visitors. Captain William Hilton sailed the British ship Adventure north from Barbados, scouting lands to grow sugar cane for the crown. Approaching the Island by way of Port Royal Sound, he encountered a sliver of land and called it “Hilton’s Headland.” Native Americans came to hunt and fish.
Thousands of Years Ago
1520s
Conquistadors explored the area.

1663
17th, 18th & 19th Centuries
For many years, few permanent residents made their home on Hilton Head Island. Though the humid, subtropical climate was ideal for growing agricultural crops like cotton and rice, fear of disease and isolation kept antebellum plantation owners on the mainland. Africans worked the plantations, and their unique blend of African and European traditions gave birth to the Gullah culture, which survives even today. hiltonhead.com
19th s
The Civil War brought big changes to Hilton Head Island. At the onset of the conflict, the South erected Fort Walker to protect the port. When the fort fell, tens of thousands of Union troops, prisoners, missionaries, shopkeepers and enslaved men and women seeking asylum flooded the Island. Suddenly humming with activity, Hilton Head became instrumental in the North’s blockade of nearby Southern ports. In 1863, the town of Mitchelville became the first self-governed town for freed men and women.
1861-1865
Post Civil War1956
Developer and environmentalist Charles E. Fraser began work on the Island’s first resort, which he called Sea Pines. Fraser is sometimes called the father of the modern resort, and his vision for the Island was progressive, even by modern standards. His determination that no building be “higher than the tallest tree,” as well as his rejection of flashy neon signs, became central to the Island’s distinctive character.
Late 1950s
Today
After the Civil War, the Island’s population dropped to around 3,000, and by 1940, it had fallen to just over 1,000. Electricity finally came to the Island in 1950 and, six years later, Hilton Head’s very first bridge to the mainland made the area significantly more accessible. Fraser’s legacy lives on in Hilton Head Island’s balance of commerce with green spaces, golf courses with wild places and thoroughfares with biking trails. Recently voted the Best Island in the U.S. by Travel and Leisure readers for the fifth time, this familyfriendly Sea Island seamlessly combines luxury, adventure and charm – all in one unforgettable destination. hiltonhead.com

HOROSCOPE ARIES
Finding your footing this month may feel a little trickier than usual. Still, striving for balance is always a worthy cause, even if you don’t achieve the level of perfection you were hoping for.
TAURUS Your essential accessory this month will be your smile. It can brighten a room and put a spring in your step. Smiling has been shown to reduce blood pressure and pain! GEMINI
Sometimes, Gemini, you have to celebrate the little things. Life is messy, it changes in an instant, and it should be treasured whenever possible. You know this deep down, now go practice it!
CANCER Your tendency to wait for just the right moment to do or say something may have you feeling left out. Dial down your filter just one notch this month and see what happens. LEO The prospect of a move out of your “comfort zone” has o a itt e ri ed. B t ask o rself, how comfortable were you really? Have things truly been so great or have they just been easy? Think about it. VIRGO
Technically, yes, you are a ear. B t this onth, it i behoove you to throw off hibernation just a tad early. Keep your warm clothes out, but start thinking like spring is right around the corner (it is). This year you’ll be ready for it, and it’s going to knock your socks off! 26 Island Events March 2022
MARCH 2022 LIBRA Diplomacy is a wonderful skill, but if you are obsessing over every word in texts, emails, and even in person, you’re wasting precious time. This month, consider: is it so bad to be considered direct? SCORPIO
If you begin to feel envy the moment you get on social media, you are not alone. B t this is co nter rod cti e to findin joy in your own life. Why not start dreaming about your next vacation or reach out to an old friend, instead?
SAGITTARIUS
Life’s absurdities may have a tendency to ake o an r this onth. B t what if they made you laugh, instead? You may be surprised at how powerful this small change can be.
CAPRICORN
You will serve as a sounding board this month. Remember: a true guide helps someone work through how they are feeling until they come out the other side. If o can re ect ack hat the other erson is feeling, you will be effective.
AQUARIUS
You and your daily grind may be on the outs. If it’s throwing you off, can you regroup? This month, look objectively at your time and what fills it. How can your routine serve you better?
PISCES Are you worrying about things that haven’t hapened et Don t. Be roacti e, be prepared, but don’t spend your days preoccupied. The only time you really have any control over is the present. hiltonhead.com

RECREATIONAL PATHWAYS GUIDE
The Town of Hilton Head Island provides nearly 60 miles of public pathways and nature trails for the enjoyment of pedestrians and cyclists.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ON THE PATHS: • Obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws. • Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users. • Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles. • Do not ride on roads when a pathway is available. • Ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists.
please move off the pathway. • Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flashlight. Bicycles must have a red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night. • When approaching slower pathway users from behind, please sound your warning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left. • Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under.
• WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you.
• Make eye contact and use hand signals. Assume other bicyclists and motorists don’t see you. Hand signals tell motorists and other path users what you intend to do and will ensure everyone’s safety on the paths.
• Yield to pedestrians. When resting or stopped,
• Be courteous, alert and predictable.

W
ith warmer waters that fuel an abundance of angling opportunities, March heralds the promise of spring and a new fishing season here on the Island. Having fished for everything from bream in small ponds to blue marlin in the deep blue of the Gulf Stream, I can say with confidence that one fishery in particular always shines this month, and it’s near the top of my favorites: sheepshead. Sheepshead can be caught year round in our local waters mainly around docks and bridges, structures that have an abundance of barnacle and oyster growth. Very fond of shellfish and equipped with teeth that nimbly crush the aforementioned shells, they gnash their way to the succulent meats inside. Usually in late February and March, they migrate to our nearshore reefs—to spawn I believe, as almost all the big females I catch offshore are full of roe. With this migration and the ensuing congregation on the reefs, catching sheepshead in larger numbers is possible, especially with a secure anchorage over the structure. Trolling motors and GPS spot lock make this much easier. 48 Island Events March 2022
Fiddler crabs are my choice of bait for sheepshead, though oysters, clams and mussels are good too (if somewhat harder to keep on the hook). But the fiddler is far from foolproof, as the wily sheep will gently suck the crab in, crush it and spit out your hook without you even feeling the slightest tug! Mentors often tell rookies to set the hook before the bite. To catch more, keep a little tension on your line, occasionally tugging gently in search of the resistance that signals Mr. Sheep has got your crab. Once you feel that, set the hook with all the vigor of a freshwater bass fisherman. Catching sheepshead is not only an angling challenge but also a highly delicious prospect. If you’re lucky enough to drive the hook home in that bony mouth full of teeth, you will be rewarded with as good a fight as any. Best of all, sheepshead is some of the best eating in the ocean! Capt. Miles Altman of Bayrunner Fishing Charters has over 50 years experience fishing the waters surrounding Hilton Head. The Finatic boat features a special threehour shark/dolphin eco-tour trip. Contact Miles at (843) 290-6955 to book an unforgettable inshore or offshore charter fishing trip, departing from Shelter Cove Marina. hiltonhead.com

Promote Pure Performance with Proper Posture! By Doug Weaver, Director of Instruction, Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy
Have you heard what proper posture can do for the body? It’s amazing. It can improve your mood, concentration and overall mental health. It aids in a ance, efficienc of o e ent and even digestion! Plus, proper posture will help you look younger, taller, thinner and more energetic. Worth the effort, no? I am 62 years old, and I want to send the ball rocketing down the fairway to land close to my target. How do I do it? Proper posture. Try this exercise: Act like you are saluting, drop your arm, turn your torso to the right and to the left. Pay attention to the range of motion and your ability to breathe. Take a 30-second break, then salute again. This time, tuck your chin toward your chest and roll your shoulders in. Turn to the right and to the left. How is your range of motion different? How did your breathing change? The posture drill I share with my students is easy to remember and very effective. The four metaphors are: Salute the General, Alligator Arms, Close the Car Door and Rock the Baby. I use them every day! Proper posture will help you play with less pain or no pain, wring more distance out of your swing, improve your accuracy and supercharge your stamina. Let golf improve your life, and let me help you improve your game. Get on the green today! 50 Island Events March 2022

Spotting a White Ibis
By Kathleen McMenamin, Master Naturalist, H2O Sports

n ancient Egypt the ibis is associated with Thoth, the god of wisdom, the written word and knowledge. These birds were important indicators of the oncoming flood and fertile time for the Nile River Valley. Although times have changed, the ibis are still excellent indicators of a healthy environment in our beautiful Lowcountry. The white ibis, Eudocimus albus, is a common sight on our coastal waterways and freshly cut golf courses. They can be viewed in large numbers, foraging for food, roosting in trees or soaring through our Lowcountry skies. The white ibis can be most easily identified by its all-white body. It has a long, downcurved red bill and long red legs. Adult ibis will have black wing tips, which can be observed when in flight. Juveniles tend to flock with other adults or large groups of other juveniles. They tend to be dark in color, but still have the apparent down-curved bill. Ibis are mid-sized wading birds with a wingspan of approximately three feet. The longest living ibis was in captivity and lived to be 27 years old.
Ibis can be found throughout the coastal areas of northern South America through the Caribbean and North America to the Carolinas. They tend to stay along the coastal areas, especially when breeding, and prefer shallow coastal marshes, wetlands and mangrove swamps. They can also be found in flooded fields or in generally moist environments. The depth of the water in an area significantly affects the population of ibis. Their feeding habits tend towards water in which can they wade. They look for food in large groups, either in the water or on moist grassy environments. Using 52 Island Events March 2022

their sense of touch as the primary hunting method, ibis probe the ground for crustaceans, mollusks, fish, insects, small reptiles and other aquatic organisms with their beaks. Ibis create large colonies once a year during their breeding season. They will flock to healthy and abundant foraging habitats beginning in March. Females begin the breeding season by displaying their fertility through dance to the males. After copulation, the female will choose a site and begin building her nest. The male will help by bringing twigs and vegetation. Ibis will lay up to four eggs and incubate them for up to 21 days. The female does the majority of the incubating, while the male brings her food and aggressively defends the nest from any other intruders. Once the chicks hatch, they are very weak and vulnerable. One parent will sit and warm the young while the other half of the pair finds food and fresh water. Chicks will leave the nest after about two weeks. The young will become more independent and will tend to flock together in large groups. H20 Sports, located in Harbour Town Marina, offers the best experience you can have on the water for all ages. nated for the Alder Lane, Coligny, Driessen, Folly Field and Islanders Beach Parks. The boundaries will be clearly marked on the beach and in the water. Lifeguards are stationed at these designated areas for assistance and beach information.
Beach Marker Signs:
Hilton Head’s beaches are marked near the dune line with signs to let emergency responders know where assistance is needed. They are also useful as a reference point if you or your group should become lost.
Beach Safety Tips: • Apply and reapply plenty of sunscreen even on cloudy days. • Wear sunglasses to prevent damage from the sun. • Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water. • Be aware of the rules and regulations of the beach. Signs are posted near most beach accesses. • Don’t leave your kids unsupervised even in guarded areas. • Note the location of the nearest lifeguard and report any hazardous conditions to him or her. • Know the name of the beach or hotel/ condo and the beach marker number where you are staying if you should need assistance. • There are often jellyfish and stingrays, as well as other sea life in and out of the water, which may sting or cut a person. In any situation where first aid is needed, find a lifeguard or seek further medical attention. • Call or wave for help if you are in trouble. hiltonhead.com
Water Safety Tips: • Don’t enter the water if you can’t swim. • Swim near a lifeguard. • Ask the lifeguard about any dangers in the water or on the beach, especially if he or she is flying a yellow caution flag. • Be aware of direction and strength of longshore currents. These currents can take you up and down the beach quickly and cause you or your kids to get lost. • Don’t let your kids swim unsupervised even in guarded areas. • Don’t swim alone. Use the buddy system so that someone always knows where you are so they can get help if needed. • Don’t overestimate your swimming ability. Stay in chest-deep or less water to insure you don’t get stuck in water over your head. • Don’t rely on flotation devices. • Swim parallel to shore if you want to swim long distances. • Don’t swim against the current. Swim across the current to escape the pull. • Always swim sober. • Don’t dive into unknown water or shallow breaking waves. Always go feet first.
Beach Prohibitions: The following are prohibited on all beaches: – Possession or consumption of alcohol – Glass (bottles, containers, etc.) – Littering – Indecent exposure or nudity – Disorderly conduct – Disturbing the peace – Unauthorized vehicles – Fires and fireworks – Shark fishing – Horseback riding or motorized driving – Removal, harming or harassment of any hiltonhead.com
