Hospitality Workers Impacted by COVID-19 Join Second Helpings’ Teams to Rescue Food

H

ospitality workers across Beaufort County are joining Second Helpings’ food rescue program. This partnership is being funded through the Lowcountry Community COVID-19 Response Fund, an initiative of the Community Foundation of the Lowcountry. In just 10 days, they raised $100,000, an amount matched by Community Foundation of the Lowcountry. The Wexford Charitable Foundation also found merit in this program and donated to support the hospitality workers. “The grant will provide extra income to hospitality workers, while supplementing the gaps in volunteers,” explained Lili Coleman, Second Helpings’ executive director. “Some Second Helpings’ volunteers are unable to assist during this pandemic due to their ages or pre-existing conditions. Our goal is to continue to rescue food to help the many people now facing food insecurity.” SERG Restaurant Group employees who are either out of work or working reduced hours due to the pandemic, will meet the Second Helpings' trucks on Hilton Head Island and in Bluffton. Their daily assignment will be to follow in their own vehicles and load rescued food on Second Helpings’ refrigerated trucks, while practicing social distancing. They will also assist in distributing the food to local food pantries. The workers will be trained by Second Helpings’ volunteers and paid through the grants, on average 25 hours a week per worker. This program will assist food rescue efforts on Hilton Head Island, in the Greater Bluffton area, Jasper County, Beaufort and in Hampton County. Second Helpings’ President Jo Pender welcomes the novel approach to rescuing food. “This pandemic is prompting nonprofits, including Second Helpings, to be more creative in how we assist our food agencies. We are grateful to Community Foundation of the Lowcountry and the Wexford Charitable Foundation for their support. Each of us can help ensure that our neighbors have food for their families.”

hiltonhead.com

“This is a wonderful idea and truly a win-win for Second Helpings, our agencies, the SERG Group and the hospitality workers,” said Graham Silcox, Hilton Head volunteer and a day captain for Second Helpings. Alan Wolf, Director of Operations, said, “The SERG Restaurant Group is grateful for this opportunity to provide workers to assist Second Helpings with food rescue during the COVID-19 crisis. The funds generated through the grant work will go directly to supporting SERG Restaurant Employees with needs during this crisis.” This is just one effort by Second Helpings to assist the growing need to fight hunger. Individual donations are being used to purchase food where there are grocery store shortages, to provide food to the families in Hampton County affected by the tornados and to rescue food anywhere to prevent food waste. Second Helpings is also collecting nonperishable food and sanitation items. Donors can bring their donations to three convenient locations in Beaufort County: • the Community Center in Sun City; • Grayco Hardware Parking Lot, 20 Sams Point Way in Beaufort; or • Second Helpings’ office on Hilton Head Island at 4 Northridge Dr. In the spirit of safe distancing, donors are asked to look for the Second Helpings’ trucks and load their donations in the back of the truck. The items will be quarantined for three days and then distributed to the agencies most in need. Second Helpings also accepts donations to help pay for food. Second Helpings’ board of directors has designated $40,000 from their budget to support these efforts now through the end of May. Donate today at secondhelpingslc.org, or send a check to Second Helpings, P. O. Box 23621, Hilton Head, SC 29925. May 2020 Island Events 13

Brand-New Spirits & TimeHonored Techniques By Georgene Mortimer, Island Winery

and wine, use the process of fermentation. When making beer, the fermentation is a complex, multistage process. The myriad choices of ingredients brewmasters can use during their fermentation process are key to fine beer craftsmanship.

The Hilton Head Distillery offers all visitors a fantastic experience, whether you are a connoisseur of craft spirits or new to them. You can either totally immerse yourself in the world of craft spirits with the Distillery Tour/Tasting, or just stop by to taste their delicious products. No matter which you choose, you will be tempted to bring home a bottle or two.

Winemakers use the natural sugars in grapes as their fermentation source. Wine is technically finished after the fermentation process but, similar to fine whiskeys, wine must go through a well-monitored aging process to achieve its desired result.

Guided by a knowledgeable associate, the distillery tour provides an interactive experience that starts with a quick video about the raw ingredients of rum and its unique place in American history. Next, you move into their impressive production facility, where you will enjoy an engaging learning experience about the art and science that goes into production. Spirit making involves two basic scientific principles: the process of fermentation and the process of distillation. Fermentation is the addition of yeast, which when added to any source of sugar will convert that sugar into alcohol. Hilton Head Distillery starts by making a “wash,” which is a combination of molasses and water. By adding yeast and nutrients to this mix, the molasses is converted to about 8-10% alcohol. This product is called a “distiller’s beer.” All alcoholic beverages, including beer 14 Island Events May 2020

The second scientific process involves heat and vaporization. As you tour Hilton Head Distillery’s impressive distillation area, you will see how they distill their fine rums and vodka. In short, they take their newly fermented “distiller’s beer” and apply well-controlled heat so the alcohol vapors rise. The vapors are then condensed into a high-proof spirit. Their careful distillation process allows them to capture the true essence of their product, but this highproof distillate is not yet ready to drink. Hilton Head Distillery’s internationally trained craftspeople use their professional touch to turn this distillate into their signature products by blending or adding unique flavors and spices. All of their products are available to taste. Your tasting will include samples of white rum, toasted coconut rum, espresso rum, spiced rum and vodka. You may keep your souvenir shot glass and are welcome to purchase bottles of your favorite products. Please check out hiltonheaddistillery.com to learn more and plan your visit. hiltonhead.com

HILTON HEAD HISTORY

Hilton Head Island has a long and rich history of visitors. 1520s

Thousands of Years Ago Native Americans came to hunt and fish.

1663 Captain William Hilton sailed the British ship Adventure north from Barbados, scouting lands to grow sugar cane for the crown. Approaching the Island by way of Port Royal Sound, he encountered a sliver of land and called it “Hilton's Headland.”

1861-1865 The Civil War brought big changes to Hilton Head Island. At the onset of the conflict, the South erected Fort Walker to protect the port. When the fort fell, tens of thousands of Union troops, prisoners, missionaries, shopkeepers and enslaved men and women seeking asylum flooded the Island. Suddenly humming with activity, Hilton Head became instrumental in the North's blockade of nearby Southern ports. In 1863, the town of Mitchelville became the first self-governed town for freed men and women.

Late 1950s

Developer and environmentalist Charles E. Fraser began work on the Island’s first resort, which he called Sea Pines. Fraser is sometimes called the father of the modern resort, and his vision for the Island was progressive, even by modern standards. His determination that no building be “higher than the tallest tree,” as well as his rejection of flashy neon signs, became central to the Island's distinctive character. 28 Island Events May 2020

Conquistadors explored the area.

17th, 18th & 19th Centuries For many years, few permanent residents made their home on Hilton Head Island. Though the humid, subtropical climate was ideal for growing agricultural crops like cotton and rice, fear of disease and isolation kept antebellum plantation owners on the mainland. Africans worked the plantations, and their unique blend of African and European traditions gave birth to the Gullah culture, which survives even today.

Post Civil War - 1956 After the Civil War, the Island's population dropped to around 3,000, and by 1940, it had fallen to just over 1,000. Electricity finally came to the Island in 1950 and, six years later, Hilton Head’s very first bridge to the mainland made the area significantly more accessible.

Today Fraser's legacy lives on in Hilton Head Island’s balance of commerce with green spaces, golf courses with wild places and thoroughfares with biking trails. Recently voted the Best Island in the U.S. by Travel and Leisure readers for the third time, this family-friendly sea island seamlessly combines luxury, adventure and charm -- all in one unforgettable destination. hiltonhead.com

Horoscope May 2020 ARIES Remember that all of your actions have consequences. Plan well and success will come in life and in your finances. Proceed with caution. A harmless flirtation could put you in an awkward position at the end of the month. TAURUS This month will test your patience and resolve. Workplace issues will have your temper raging, but show that you are a true professional and approach these issues in a calm and decisive manner. An improved diet with less sweets and more veggies will help you remain calm and think clearly. GEMINI Your willingness to give of yourself is something to be applauded, but do not absorb the problems of others or work so tirelessly for others that your own quality of life is diminished. Balance is the key to happiness. Traditions change, and you will initiate a new one this month. CANCER Your disciplined lifestyle and hard work will result in many celebrations and a period of good luck. By midmonth, your luck will be at its peak, so use this time to advance yourself professionally. A new and more positive outlook on life will brighten your future. LEO It is your time to shine. Dress to impress, because you will be the focal point of a work or social event this month. A loved one’s emotional state will require some additional sensitivity at home. VIRGO In our high-tech society, it’s become easy to express our frustration by typing a few choice words from our phones. Take a moment to consider how you would feel if all of your communications were suddenly out in the open and adjust your language accordingly. 30 Island Events May 2020

LIBRA Your patience and diligence at work will finally be rewarded. A family member has a special surprise to unveil, and a stretch of good luck will have you floating on cloud nine. Celebrate your good fortune with a shopping spree. SCORPIO Prepare for the unexpected when planning out a work schedule for a major project, and forgive yourself for some uncharacteristic, yet human mistakes. Someone you believe to be a true friend will prove themselves disloyal. Keep your chin up, and maintain your high standards. SAGITTARIUS Forgive and forget. The grudge that has formed between you and an old friend is unproductive. Prepare for some sudden changes to your social calendar, which may delight one friend at the expense of another. CAPRICORN Do not present yourself as an expert on topics you actually know little about. A false presentation could put you in an equally embarrassing position this month. A first impression will deceive you, but by your second encounter, you will be thoroughly enticed. AQUARIUS The little things will make you the happiest this month. Keep a low social profile. Spend some time doing what you like to do at your own pace. You will reconnect with an old friend. PISCES. A new romance may be on the horizon, as you cross paths with a mysterious Scorpio. Do not underestimate the advice of the young. It will prove very helpful this month. hiltonhead.com

nated for the Alder Lane, Coligny, Driessen, Folly Field and Islanders Beach Parks. The boundaries will be clearly marked on the beach and in the water. Lifeguards are stationed at these designated areas for assistance and beach information.

Beach Marker Signs:

Hilton Head’s beaches are marked near the dune line with signs to let emergency responders know where assistance is needed. They are also useful as a reference point if you or your group should become lost.

Beach Safety Tips: • Apply and reapply plenty of sunscreen even on cloudy days. • Wear sunglasses to prevent damage from the sun. • Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water. • Be aware of the rules and regulations of the beach. Signs are posted near most beach accesses. • Don’t leave your kids unsupervised even in guarded areas. • Note the location of the nearest lifeguard and report any hazardous conditions to him or her. • Know the name of the beach or hotel/ condo and the beach marker number where you are staying if you should need assistance. • There are often jellyfish and stingrays, as well as other sea life in and out of the water, which may sting or cut a person. In any situation where first aid is needed, find a lifeguard or seek further medical attention. • Call or wave for help if you are in trouble. hiltonhead.com

Water Safety Tips: • Don’t enter the water if you can’t swim. • Swim near a lifeguard. • Ask the lifeguard about any dangers in the water or on the beach, especially if he or she is flying a yellow caution flag. • Be aware of direction and strength of longshore currents. These currents can take you up and down the beach quickly and cause you or your kids to get lost. • Don’t let your kids swim unsupervised even in guarded areas. • Don’t swim alone. Use the buddy system so that someone always knows where you are so they can get help if needed. • Don’t overestimate your swimming ability. Stay in chest deep or less water to insure you don’t get stuck in water over your head. • Don’t rely on flotation devices. • Swim parallel to shore if you want to swim long distances. • Don’t swim against the current. Swim across the current to escape the pull. • Always swim sober. • Don’t dive into unknown water or shallow breaking waves. Always go feet first.

Beach Prohibitions: The following are prohibited on all beaches: – Possession or consumption of alcohol – Glass (bottles, containers, etc.) – Littering – Indecent exposure or nudity – Disorderly conduct – Disturbing the peace – Unauthorized vehicles – Fires and fireworks – Shark fishing – Horseback riding or motorized driving – Removal, harming, or harassment of any hiltonhead.com

WHAT to KNOW

on d n a l s I d ea ilton H

Alcohol:

Drinking/possession of alcohol on Hilton Head's public beaches is illegal and could result in a fine of up to $500. Liquor stores are not open on Sundays in South Carolina, though you can buy wine and beer in some gas stations and supermarkets.

Roundabouts:

You might as well learn to love South Carolina’s roundabouts. They’re everywhere! There are just a few rules to follow in the two-lane roundabout: • The drivers already in the roundabout have the right of way. • Always yield to them before entering the roundabout. • A roundabout is like any other flowing traffic—don’t stop in the middle. • As annoying as it can be to get behind a big slow vehicle, it’s even worse to be stuck beside it in a roundabout. Just wait. • Like with intersections, don’t change lanes while in the roundabout.

Beaches:

There are a few rules we all need to keep in mind to ensure a safe experience for everyone who comes to Hilton Head. It is therefore very important to remember that there is: • No sleeping on the beach between midnight and 6 a.m. • No driving on the beach • No horses on the beach • No fires on the beach • No fireworks on the beach (you need a permit to set off fireworks anywhere on Hilton Head, and an offense will result in a misdemeanor and a $500 fine) • No pets on the beach between 10 a.m.5 p.m. the Friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day

52nd RBC Heritage Presented by Boeing Rescheduled for June The PGA TOUR recently announced changes to the balance of the 2020 tournament schedule. The revised schedule includes the 52nd RBC Heritage Presented by Boeing, which will now be played June 18-21. The event takes place at the Harbour Town Golf Links on Hilton Head, SC. The PGA TOUR made the decision to cancel the 2020 RBC Heritage 23 days prior to tournament week, April 13-19. The well-being of the Hilton Head Island community remains of utmost importance. Therefore, the tournament will be played without spectators or sponsors. The PGA TOUR, RBC and the Heritage Classic Foundation will continue to work directly with local, state and federal government agencies to ensure the health and safety of the select constituents. This, of course, applies to players and all of those allowed on the grounds during the RBC Heritage. “It has been a whirlwind of emotions over the past month,” Tournament Director Steve Wilmot said. “We’re excited and grateful for the opportunity to host the event we work so hard for every single year and thank the PGA TOUR for trusting us with this decision. We’ll be ready to host the 52nd RBC Heritage Presented by Boeing in June. We hope the world tunes in to experience South Carolina’s only PGA TOUR event.” “Hosting the tournament is an important tradition in South Carolina, and while this year will be different, we’re pleased with the PGA TOUR’s decision to include it on their revised schedule,” South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster said. “Some may regret that it will be a broadcast-only event this year, but it’s the right decision for the safety of our people and for the well-being of the Hilton Head Island community, which will remain our top priority.” "We are pleased to see that tradition continue, balanced with the necessary precautions that are required to protect 36 Island Events May 2020

players, the community and those who support the tournament,” said Mary DePaoli, Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer, RBC. “We are proud to partner with the PGA TOUR and the Heritage Classic Foundation, and will work closely with our partners to see this world-class event come to life on broadcast.” “What an honor it would be to welcome the PGA TOUR back to Hilton Head Island in June. Golf fans may not be able to walk the gallery due to health precautions. But the fact that viewers will lay eyes on the RBC Heritage being played here is incredible news,” Hilton Head Island Mayor John McCann said. “It’s a huge win for golf and for our community.” “Save the date. We’ll give you a great tournament. It won’t be the same as other years, but I’d take this alternative any day,” said Wilmot. “The second-best thing to being at Harbour Town during the RBC Heritage is to watch it from the comfort of your homes, plaid outfits on and drinks in hand!” About the RBC Heritage Presented by Boeing: Celebrating its 52nd year in 2020, the RBC Heritage is the only PGA TOUR event in South Carolina. The Heritage Classic Foundation, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. It supports educational and charitable initiatives to enhance quality of life and economic vitality. Since it was founded in 1987, the Foundation has donated more than $44.6 million to people in need. For information call (843) 671-2448 or visit rbcheritage.com. RECREATIONAL PATHWAYS GUIDE The Town of Hilton Head Island provides nearly 60 miles of public pathways and nature trails for the enjoyment of pedestrians and cyclists.

RULES FOR THE ROAD: • Please obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws. • Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users. • Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles. • Please do not ride on roads when a pathway is available. • Please ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists. • WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you. • Please yield to pedestrians. When resting or stopped, please move off the pathway. 38 Island Events May 2020

• Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flashlight. Bicycles must have a red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night. • When approaching slower pathway users from behind, please sound your warning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left. • Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under. • Make eye contact and use hand signals. Assume other bicyclists and motorists don’t see you. Hand signals tell motorists and other path users what you intend to do and will ensure everyone’s safe enjoyment of the paths. Be courteous, alert and predictable.

Great BLUE Herons By Kathleen McMenamin Vicars, Master Naturalist

Herons are wading birds, which are most commonly seen in shallow waters. They are carnivores, with fish making up most of their diet, but they will also eat crustaceans, small reptiles, small rodents and insects. Walking slowly through shallow water, looking for small movements, once prey is spotted, their necks can spring at great speeds to pierce the prey, then swallow it whole. They will also stand motionless in shallow water, waiting for prey to come to them, and have been known to stand still and wiggle their toes under the mud. This process fools fish into thinking that there are worms to eat, and then the herons get an easy meal. On Hilton Head, you can see them standing on the edge of the road, moving their head and neck side to side as they look straight up, which is a technique for catching insects, especially dragonflies. Great blues also help keep the alligator population in control by eating the freshly hatched baby gators.

O

ne of the most iconic birds of the Lowcountry is the great blue heron. The name reflects the colors of its beautiful plumage. These beautiful birds can be seen foraging shallow waters or gliding through our Southern skies. Great blue herons, Ardea Herodias, are the most common and the largest herons in North America, growing up to be four-anda-half-feet tall with a six-foot wingspan. Males and females have the same coloring, but males may be a little bigger. Although they are such large birds, they only weigh up to six pounds. The average lifespan of a great blue heron is 15 years, but individuals have been known to live up to 24 years. Herons usually move very slowly, but when needed, can snap into action quickly. They have been recorded at flying up to 30 mph. Their flight is very distinct; their neck curls up in a tight “S shape, while their broad and rounded wings beat slowly, with their long legs trailing behind them.

54 Island Events May 2020

During breeding season, which starts in April, herons will nest in colonies for safety. Males will choose the nesting spot, usually high up in tall pine trees. They will then begin displays in order to attract a mate. Great blue herons will be monogamous during a season, but will change partners at the next breeding time. Once the pairs have been made, males will gather nesting materials, while the females construct the nest. Females will lay two to seven eggs. Both the male and female will incubate the eggs for about 30 days. These birds live on Hilton Head year-round. Great blues can be found throughout all of North America, all the way through the northern parts of South America, and heron migration is dependent on where they live. Birds that live in areas where the water freezes in the winter will migrate South during those times. They can be found in both fresh and saltwater areas. Keep an eye out for them in marshes, ponds, streams, lakes and nearshore areas. H2O Sports is a great place to spark curiosity and inspire learning through adventure in all ages. MAY

You Catch Cobia Photo and Article by Capt. Miles Altman, Bayrunner Fishing Charters

T

he month of May means a lot of things to people. Spring is in full swing and the promise of summer is just around the corner. The weather is getting real nice, and for local fishermen, it means primarily one thing — cobia season! The very exciting, sometimes frustrating, brown bombers move in to the sounds and offshore reefs and—until lately—the region offered the finest cobia fishing to be found anywhere on the East Coast. The Broad River and the Port Royal Sound to the north of Hilton Head had, at one time, been crowned the cobia capital, bar none. Over the years, that area has suffered a heavy decline in supply, to the point where even catching one has become difficult. It’s probably no coincidence that the booming population of people, in addition to the easy access (you could fish a jon boat in Broad River), has overwhelmed the stock to the point that the Department of Natural Resources has closed the inshore fishery down. You may still catch cobia, if you’re real lucky, but you can keep zero. This has tempered my anticipation of May, but fortunately the offshore cobia stocks are good. Federal regulations have lowered the possession limit to one per person, instead of two, and the season closes down on June 20. I fear this may be too little action, as

56 Island Events May 2020

most of the boats capable of reaching the offshore stock usually carry six anglers or more. The offshore scene is quickly becoming reminiscent of the inshore scenario, as it is not uncommon to see a hundred boats at one time fishing the more popular reefs. Cobia average 40-60 pounds or more; do the math — six of those is a lot of meat. Anyone who has sightcasted one on top or hooked one blindly down deep will attest to the brute strength of the cobia. It is a great fishing feather to put in your cap, and something you will want to repeat in the future, many times. Right now, the offshore stocks are great and I believe the regulations are a step in the right direction. However, I think the most powerful steps that could be taken are voluntary ones. Be reasonable and don’t get caught up in killing numbers. Take some cobia to eat and leave the rest. Then maybe — just maybe — we won’t repeat the inshore disaster. Captain Miles Altman of Bayrunner Fishing Charters has more than 42 years of experience fishing the waters surrounding Hilton Head Island. Don’t miss the Finatic boat, which can accommodate up to 12 passengers and features a special three-hour shark/dolphin eco-tour trip. beginning. Not only does it help your dog float if he falls in the water, the jacket offers handles to quickly pull him back in the boat. In addition, the embrace of the jacket comforts fearful canines. Small breeds are generally a bit easier to take out paddling because their weight is less likely to disrupt your boat or board. For kayaking, a recreational-style single kayak with a large open cockpit works well. Your dog can sit between your legs or on your lap. For larger dogs, you will need a double kayak — with Fido riding up front. For paddleboarding, just be sure your board has enough buoyancy to support the extra weight. Until your dog gets comfortable out on the water, he may try and jump out of the boat or off the board and swim to solid ground. It’s important while acclimatizing him that you do so in an area where he can safely swim to land.

ay brings perfect temperatures to the Lowcountry and everyone is looking for ways to enjoy the outdoors with their friends and loved ones. This spring, be sure to include your furry, four-legged friends in your outdoor recreation.

Kayaking and paddleboarding with dogs can be great fun for humans and canines alike! From my experience, a bit of planning goes a long way in making sure the experience is enjoyable. The most important factor in paddling with your dog is knowing your dog. Be sure your dog knows how to swim before heading out. If your dog is a bit skittish around water, or not a great swimmer, a canine lifejacket is an essential piece of equipment in the 58 Island Events May 2020

Around here, the salt marshes are full of grass and oysters that can seriously injure your pup. A lake or pool is a much better place to get started. You also want to have a leash to correct this behavior if it starts. Keep a leash on the dog the first couple of times out on the water, so you can correct the flight response as it happens. Do not, however, pull on the leash when your dog swims, as it could snag on something. It’s a good idea to put a float on your leash, so as not to lose it. I like to make a loop of 15 wine corks and attach it to the handle. Also be sure to carry fresh water to prevent your dog from drinking salt water. If your dog is treattrained, bring those to reward calm behaviors on the boat or board. Sometimes, no amount of training and practice will make a dog enjoy paddling. In this case, neither of you will have a very good time. Find another activity to do together, like running on the beach or walking in the woods. Give paddling with your pooch a try! You just may discover a great bonding activity that you both love. At Outside Hilton Head, dogs are allowed on both hourly and daily kayak and paddleboard rentals. For more than 30 years, Outside Hilton Head has provided personalized adventures for all ages, from kayak, fishing, nature and dolphin tours to kids’ camps, history excursions, family outings and standup paddleboarding. What’s In Your

Bag?

By Doug Weaver, Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort

GOLF CLUBS are the equipment we use to hit the golf ball. A golf club has three parts — the head, the shaft and the grip. The rules of golf determine club design specifications, but the clubmaker’s goal is to create golf clubs, within these specifications, to maximize the performance behind a golfer’s swing. The better your swing, the less forgiving club you require, so the beginner or average player needs a more forgiving club design. A set of golf clubs is limited to 14 and typically consists of three metal woods or “woods,” as we used to call them (and some still do), along with irons, a pitching wedge, gap wedge, sand wedge, lob wedge and a putter.

• METAL WOODS

Used to hit long and low shots, the club face of traditional “woods” were made with hardwood, like persimmon. In the 1980s, titanium and other composite materials were used to create a hollow-bodied, largeheaded golf club known as “metal woods.” If a golf hole is 400 yards from tee to green, most golfers use a metal wood to hit the first shot. It’s customary to use your metals when you are 175 yards or more away from the green. The driver (also called the 1-metal) has the lowest loft of any golf club. Loft is the angle of the club face that controls trajectory and affects distance. A driver has a loft between 7- and 12-degrees. Most golfers also carry 3- and 5-metals in their bag. A 3-metal has a loft between 15- and 18-degrees, and a 5-metal has a loft between 20- and 22-degrees. The higher the club number, the higher the loft. 60 Island Events May 2020

• IRONS

Long irons have traditionally been the most difficult clubs to use. Hybrids are a combination of a fairway metal head design and iron shaft, to offer the best of both clubs. The idea is to give the golfer a more forgiving option when compared to long irons. The popularity of hybrids has been so strong in recent years that many golfers replaced their 3- and 4- irons with hybrid clubs. Irons are generally used when you are less than 200 yards away from the green. The closer you are to the green, the higher the iron you will use. A standard set of irons consists of 4-, 5-, 6-, 7-, 8- and 9-irons. The 4-iron is harder to hit than the higher number irons. Many golfers are changing to a modified golf set that replaces the longest irons with higher, lofted woods, like 7- and 9-woods.

• WEDGES

Wedges are utility irons designed for shots of 100 yards and less. The wedge's degree of loft causes the ball to go up in the air at a specific angle or degree. Wedges commonly come in 48 Pitching Wedge, 52-degree Gap Wedge, 56-degree Sand Wedge, 60-degree Lob Wedge and 64-degree High Lob Wedge.

• PUTTERS

A putter is a golf club designed to roll the ball on the smooth surface of the green. The putter has many styles that utilize the concept of the pendulum swing. This pendulum uses the consistence of gravity to make distance and direction predictable. A former PGA Touring Pro, Doug Weaver is the Director of Instruction at the Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy. REEL FUN

Bait your hook and head out for a day of deep sea or shark fishing with experienced boat captains who know the secret spots, drop a line from a kayak or into the nearest lagoon, cast a shrimp net or try surf fishing to see what you can catch.

HIT THE BEACH

The Island’s 12 miles of hardpacked, white-sand beaches provide the perfect playground for any age, in any season. Rent a bike, splash in the surf, fly a kite, build castles in the sand or simply relax on a rented beach chair under an umbrella with a good book in hand.
