A growing body of scientific evidence shows that what people taste when evaluating a wine can be influenced by the music that happens to be playing at the same time. It has long been known that what we hear can influence aspects of tasting. This is because out of all our sensory organs, the tongue is the “dumbest,” meaning that all of our other senses (hearing, smell and sight) are more acute and strongly influence taste. When we eat a meal on a fancy plate, full of elaborate place settings, fine porcelain, served by waiters wearing tuxedos and with soft classical music playing, the food is going to taste different than if we ate the same food in a diner blaring pop music. The latest research now shows that by playing the “right” music, one can also impact specific sensory-discriminative aspects of tasting as well. Simply put, music influences the perceived acidity, sweetness, fruitiness and astringency in a wine. In the latest study, Professor Adrian C. North of Edinburgh, Scotland, gave taste tests to 250 students, while playing music in the background. Students were put into groups and given either a red wine or a white wine. Each group listened to one of four songs. The four songs were characterized as follows: powerful and heavy, subtle and refined, 14 Island Events May 2021

mellow and soft or zingy and refreshing. The results showed that the music had a consistent effect on the participants’ perceptions of the wine. They tended to think their wine had the qualities of the music to which they were listening. So, for example, both the red and white wines were given the highest ratings for being powerful and heavy by those participants who drank them to the powerful and heavy tune. The aromas and flavors of a Brut champagne, paired with new-age music, offered an otherworldly experience. Californian winemaker and wine consultant Clark Smith set up his own studies involving over 150 wines and 250 songs. He summarized his conclusions as follows: “Red wines need either minor key or they need music that has negative emotion. They don’t like happy music. With expensive reds, don’t play music that makes you giggle. Pinots like sexy music. Cabernets like angry music. It’s very hard to find a piece of music that’s good for both Pinot and Cabernet.” “Never play polkas with anything,” he says, unless you really like White Zinfandel. Island Beaches Public Beach Access: The Town of Hilton Head Island provides nine public beach accesses: • Alder Lane Beach Access, off South Forest Beach Dr. • Coligny Beach Park, off Coligny Circle • Driessen Beach Park, end of Bradley Beach Rd. • Chaplin Community Park, off Wm. Hilton Pkwy. • Fish Haul Park & Mitchelville Beach Park, end of Beach City Rd. • Burkes Beach Access, end of Burkes Beach Rd. • Folly Field Beach Park and Islanders Beach Park, both off Folly Field Rd.

Parking & Facilities:

There are 23 metered spaces at Alder Lane, 54 metered spaces at Folly Field and 13 metered spaces at Burkes Beach Road. The parking fee is a QUARTER for each 15 minutes. Additionally, there are 207 spaces at Driessen Beach Park for long-term parking. The fee is a QUARTER for each 30 minutes during the week. Parking spaces at Islanders Beach Park are ALWAYS reserved for annual beach passes. Parking at Driessen Beach Park for annual beach passes is reserved from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Parking is FREE at Fish Haul Park, Mitchelville Beach Park and Coligny Beach Park. Beach Marker Signs:

Hilton Head’s beaches are marked near the dune line with signs to let emergency responders know where assistance is needed. They are also useful as a reference point if you or your group should become lost.

Beach Safety Tips: • Apply and reapply plenty of sunscreen even on cloudy days. • Wear sunglasses to prevent damage from the sun. • Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water. • Be aware of the rules and regulations of the beach. Signs are posted near most beach accesses. • Don’t leave your kids unsupervised even in guarded areas. • Note the location of the nearest lifeguard and report any hazardous conditions to him or her. • Know the name of the beach or hotel/ condo and the beach marker number where you are staying if you should need assistance. • There are often jellyfish and stingrays, as well as other sea life in and out of the water, which may sting or cut a person. In any situation where first aid is needed, find a lifeguard or seek further medical attention. • Call or wave for help if you are in trouble. hiltonhead.com

Water Safety Tips: • Don’t enter the water if you can’t swim. • Swim near a lifeguard. • Ask the lifeguard about any dangers in the water or on the beach, especially if he or she is flying a yellow caution flag. • Be aware of direction and strength of longshore currents. These currents can take you up and down the beach quickly and cause you or your kids to get lost. • Don’t let your kids swim unsupervised even in guarded areas. • Don’t swim alone. Use the buddy system so that someone always knows where you are so they can get help if needed. • Don’t overestimate your swimming ability. Stay in chest-deep or less water to insure you don’t get stuck in water over your head. • Don’t rely on flotation devices. • Swim parallel to shore if you want to swim long distances. • Don’t swim against the current. Swim across the current to escape the pull. • Always swim sober. • Don’t dive into unknown water or shallow breaking waves. Always go feet first.

Neptune K Statue

at Shelter Cove Harbour he towering 12-foot bronze statue of Neptune, which doubles as a largerthan-life sundial, serves as an iconic symbol of Shelter Cove Harbour at Palmetto Dunes, welcoming visitors to the entrance of the popular waterfront dining and shopping location.

Designed and installed by sculptor Wayne Edwards, this much-loved statue serves as a tribute to Neptune, the Roman god of the sea. The King Neptune statue, which depicts a bearded Neptune holding his signature trident, serves as a popular centerpiece at Shelter Cove Harbour. The statue is strategically mounted on a circular base with numbers around the edge. When the trident’s shadow falls across the 26-foot-wide base, the numbers indicate the precise time. Hailed as the world’s largest figurative sundial, the statue was originally cast at a foundry in Princeton, New Jersey, and shipped by truck to Hilton Head Island in 1983. Engineers made meticulous measurements before the one-ton statue was installed, ensuring that it would be located at the ideal angle to indicate the time. They oriented the sculpture towards true south by aligning the constellation Ursa Major with the North Star. An official dedication for the statue was held at Shelter Cove Harbour on August 11, 1983, attracting residents and visitors alike. Today, the King Neptune statue delights generations of visitors to Shelter Cove Harbour, impressing adults and children of all ages. The Town of Hilton Head Island provides nearly 60 miles of public pathways and nature trails for the enjoyment of pedestrians and cyclists.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ON THE PATHS: • Obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws. • Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users. • Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles. • Do not ride on roads when a pathway is available. • Ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists.

Great Blue Herons: The Patient Wader By Kathleen McMenamin Vicars, Master Naturalist

ne of the most iconic birds of the Lowcountry is the great blue heron. The name reflects the colors of their beautiful plumage. These large and beautiful birds can be seen foraging shallow waters or gliding through our Southern skies. Great blue herons, Ardea Herodias, are the most common and the largest herons in North America, growing to be up to fourand-a-half feet tall with a six-foot wingspan. They have beautiful blue-grey coloring, chestnut thighs, a white belly and a white cap that sits atop their black-eye stripe. Males and females have the same coloring, but males may be a little bigger. Although they are such large birds, they only weigh up to six pounds. The average lifespan of a great blue heron is 15 years, but individual birds have been known to live up to 24 years. Herons usually move very slowly but, when needed, can snap into action quickly. They have been recorded at flying up to 30 mph. Their flight is very distinct; their neck curls up in a tight “S” shape, while their broad and rounded wings beat slowly, with their long legs trailing behind them. Herons are wading birds, which are most commonly seen in shallow waters. They are carnivores, with fish making up most of their diet, but they will also eat crustaceans, small reptiles, small rodents and insects. Walking slowly through shallow water, looking for small movements, once prey is spotted, their necks can spring at great speeds to pierce the prey, then swallow it whole. They will also stand motionless, waiting for prey to come to them, and have been known to stand still and wiggle their toes under the mud. This process fools fish into thinking

that there are worms to eat, and then the herons get an easy meal. On Hilton Head, you can see them standing on the edge of the road, moving their head and neck side to side as they look straight up, which is a technique for catching insects, especially dragonflies. Great blues also help keep the alligator population in control by eating the freshly hatched baby gators. During breeding season, herons will nest in colonies for safety. Males will choose the nesting spot, usually high up in tall pine trees. He will then begin displays in order to attract a mate. Great blue herons will be monogamous during a season, but will change partners at the next breeding time. Once the pairs have been made, males will gather nesting materials, while the females construct the nest. Females will lay two to seven eggs. Both the male and female will incubate the eggs for about 30 days. The baby birds are able to fly after 60 days and will leave the nest after 90. These birds live on Hilton Head year-round. Great blues can be found throughout North America, all the way through the Northern parts of South America, and heron migration is dependent on where they live. Birds that live in areas where the water freezes in the winter will migrate South during those seasons. The great blues on Hilton Head do not migrate. They can be found in both fresh and saltwater areas. Keep an eye out for them in marshes, ponds, streams, lakes and nearshore areas. The Fast and Furious Cobia What to know this season

t’s mid April as I write this, and air and water temperatures are warming quickly, heralding the arrival of summer. Spanish mackerel have been caught offshore and fast-moving schools of bonito have been sighted. Reliable eyes have reported a skyrocketing king mackerel just a few miles off the beach and the boating of a 40-pound cobia. The season is upon us, and by the time this goes to print, it will be in full swing. May is cobia time for most seasoned local anglers. Resembling a large chocolate catfish, the curious cobia is attracted to floating objects such as boats and buoys. They love to follow large sharks and rays, and less experienced fishermen often mistake them for sharks when they begin to circle the boat. Typically, the males are smaller, while the females grow quite large — sometimes 80 to 100 lbs! Your best bet for bait is live or dead menhaden, but cobia have been known to devour live eels, pinfish, whiting and shrimp. Infamous for charging every offering thrown at them, these fickle fish will sometimes just turn tail at the last second and refuse to eat anything at all! They can be caught on artificial lures such as large bucktail jigs or plugs.

These brawny battlers have become so popular of late that regulations have been tightening almost every year. For the whole month of May, cobia must be released if caught in state waters. Outside the month of May, keeper fish must now be 36” to the fork (up three inches), and bag limits are down to one per person or three per boat in state waters. Offshore in federal waters, fish may be kept in May and the boat limit is six, or one per angler. Cobia offer great sport, and if you’re fortunate enough to catch a legal fish you can be assured of a delicious dinner. Like many fish, cobia’s popularity in restaurants helped contribute to a decline in their numbers. If last season was any indication, though, the inshore population seems to be on the upswing. Hilton Head Island has a long and rich history of visitors. 1520s

Thousands of Years Ago Native Americans came to hunt and fish.

1663 Captain William Hilton sailed the British ship Adventure north from Barbados, scouting lands to grow sugar cane for the crown. Approaching the Island by way of Port Royal Sound, he encountered a sliver of land and called it “Hilton's Headland.”

1861-1865 The Civil War brought big changes to Hilton Head Island. At the onset of the conflict, the South erected Fort Walker to protect the port. When the fort fell, tens of thousands of Union troops, prisoners, missionaries, shopkeepers and enslaved men and women seeking asylum flooded the Island. Suddenly humming with activity, Hilton Head became instrumental in the North's blockade of nearby Southern ports. In 1863, the town of Mitchelville became the first self-governed town for freed men and women.

Late 1950s

Developer and environmentalist Charles E. Fraser began work on the Island’s first resort, which he called Sea Pines. Fraser is sometimes called the father of the modern resort, and his vision for the Island was progressive, even by modern standards. His determination that no building be “higher than the tallest tree,” as well as his rejection of flashy neon signs, became central to the Island's distinctive character. 62 Island Events May 2021

17th, 18th & 19th Centuries For many years, few permanent residents made their home on Hilton Head Island. Though the humid, subtropical climate was ideal for growing agricultural crops like cotton and rice, fear of disease and isolation kept antebellum plantation owners on the mainland. Africans worked the plantations, and their unique blend of African and European traditions gave birth to the Gullah culture, which survives even today.

Post Civil War - 1956 After the Civil War, the Island's population dropped to around 3,000, and by 1940, it had fallen to just over 1,000. Electricity finally came to the Island in 1950 and, six years later, Hilton Head’s very first bridge to the mainland made the area significantly more accessible.

Today Fraser's legacy lives on in Hilton Head Island’s balance of commerce with green spaces, golf courses with wild places and thoroughfares with biking trails. On Hilton Head Island

Alcohol:

Drinking/possession of alcohol on Hilton Head's public beaches is illegal and could result in a fine of up to $500. Liquor stores are not open on Sundays in South Carolina, though you can buy wine and beer in some gas stations and supermarkets.

Roundabouts:

You might as well learn to love South Carolina’s roundabouts. They're everywhere! There are just a few rules to follow in the two-lane roundabout: • The drivers already in the roundabout have the right of way. • Always yield to them before entering the roundabout. • A roundabout is like any other flowing traffic— don't stop in the middle. • As annoying as it can be to get behind a big slow vehicle, it's even worse to be stuck beside it in a roundabout. Just wait. • Like with intersections, don't change lanes while in the roundabout.

Beaches:

There are a few rules we all need to keep in mind to ensure a safe experience for everyone who comes to Hilton Head. It is therefore very important to remember that there is: • No sleeping on the beach between midnight and 6 a.m. • No driving on the beach • No horses on the beach • No fires on the beach • No fireworks on the beach (you need a permit to set off fireworks anywhere on Hilton Head, and an offense will result in a misdemeanor and a $500 fine) • No pets on the beach between 10 a.m.5 p.m. the Friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day

There is a small playground and a walking path with beach access. 708 Baygall Rd. Chaplin Community Park

This park offers beach access, basketball, tennis courts, a playground and even a dog park! This large park is all connected by pathways, so it’s easy to get from one place to another, whether that be on foot or bike. 11 Castnet Dr.

Compass Rose Park

Compass Rose is a serene space for those vacationing on the south end of the Island. Its reflecting pool creates a calming oasis on Pope Ave. 4 St. Augustine Pl.

Crossings Park

Be sure to check out Hilton Head’s recreational park — Crossings Park. It’s one of the biggest parks, with plenty of land and trails to explore, baseball and soccer fields and a playground. 6 Haig Point Ct.

Rowing and Sailing Center

Enjoy the water sports of rowing and sailing on the waterways around Hilton Head Island. This facility offers a fixed pier, floating dock, grill, picnic pavilion and restrooms. 133 Squire Pope Rd.

Mitchelville Freedom Park

Home to the first self-governed settlement for freed slaves in the United States after the Civil War, this park has great views in a quiet setting. It offers historic exhibits, interpretive signage, trails, beach access, picnic pavilion, observation gazebo and restrooms. 10 Fish Haul Creek Rd. 66 Island Events May 2021

Greens Shell Park is the site of a historic graveyard. It may be one of the smaller parks, but it still has two sets of playground equipment, a basketball court, an observation deck, picnic pavilion and restrooms. 99 Squire Pope Rd. If you’re looking for a park that’s away from the crowds, then Hilton Head Park just might be for you. This solitary stretch of land has two tennis courts and a basketball court, as well as a large grassy field for other games or maybe even a nice picnic. 152 William Hilton Pkwy.

Jarvis Creek Park

There’s a lot to do at Jarvis Creek Park, especially if you’re in the mood to move! This 53-acre park boasts all kinds of amenities and promotes activity for everyone – from toddlers to grandparents. This secluded waterfront site offers catch-and-release fishing, walking and fitness trails, a picnic pavilion and playground. 100 Jarvis Park Rd.

Lowcountry Celebration Park

The park is minutes away from the Coligny Beach Park. The new Lowcountry Celebration Park features attractions designed to help park visitors engage in play, discover the Island’s environment and be part of cultural festivities.

shelter Cove Community Park

Right behind the Shelter Cove Towne Centre is a beautiful outdoor retreat, complete with a performance pavilion, peaceful picnic spots and a water promenade with breathtaking views of Broad Creek. It is also a city gathering spot with frequent shows and festivals, plus a green space for sports and fitness. It is home to the Veterans Memorial Park. 39 Shelter Cove Ln.

Old House Creek Dock
