Island Trails and Walking Paths Take the time to enjoy these trails GREEN’S SHELL ENCLOSURE The 3-acre Green’s Shell Enclosure Heritage Preserve is an archaeological site dating back to 1335 A.D. This trail is located near the top of Hilton Head Island, just off of Squire Pope Rd. From the parking area, you will walk on a road to this short, easy trail, which will take you into the past. You will pass a cemetery and cross over a ramp to an overlook at the end of the trail. Green’s Shell Enclosure is a low earthen embankment, two- to six-feet high, that dates back to the Irene Period of 1300 to 1450 A.D. Covering two acres, this embankment was once a fortified village built by farmers who used shells for everything from tools to objects used for religious rituals. Stay on the trail and do not remove anything from this preserve. Bring insect repellent during the warm months. Hours: Dawn to dusk Directions on Hilton Head Island: From the intersection of US 278 and Squire Pope Rd., turn left into Greens Park. Entrance to the preserve is on the left at the gate. Go around the gate and walk on the road past the cemetery to the entrance ramp. 32 Island Events May 2022

Jarvis Creek Loop

JARVIS CREEK LEISURE LOOP The Leisure Loop at Jarvis Creek Park is an easy .85 mile paved loop. The loop starts behind the restrooms. There’s a small pier at the start of the trail with access to a dock. If you start off counterclockwise, you’ll pass a fitness station to your left. Pathways extend all over the park and around the lake creating a 1.1 mile loop. Runners, joggers and walkers are all welcome to explore the lakeside paths that extend out into wooded areas. This paved trail is equipped with wooden bridges over marshy areas, so no one has to get their feet too dirty. There are nine pieces of outdoor training equipment in a peaceful area behind a live oak, and the park was designed with exercising in mind! Each station has a set of instructions that explains how to use the equipment and perform the exercise. You even get a beautiful view of the lake while you’re strengthening your core. Hours: Dawn to dusk. Directions: Located off of William Hilton Pkwy.

The Fish With Human Teeth By Jessie Renew The aquatic ecosystem of Hilton Head Island and the Lowcountry is home to a wide variety of animals working in harmony to create the beautiful natural places we enjoy. Among these is the abundant fishery comprised of hundreds of species of animals, all of whom are woven into the food web. Close to the bottom of the cycle are bivalves and crustaceans which eat the barely visible planktons in the water. These shelled creatures provide food for many fish, birds and mammals, each of which has a particular adaptation to get through the shell and to the tasty meat of the prey. One fascinating fish in this group is the sheepshead, the fish with human teeth! Sheepshead can be found along the entire Eastern seaboard and the Gulf of Mexico. They are unique in that they stay fairly close to shore and to rocky areas, feeding on the shelled animals that live there. They thrive in the brackish waters where creeks or rainwater runoff meet salty estuaries. Because of this unique feeding habitat, sheepshead are sensitive to environmental influences and 34 Island Events May 2022

will leave areas that become polluted. In Brooklyn, NY, Sheepshead Bay is named after this fish, but they no longer inhabit the area due to the increase in waterborne pollutants. Oysters, the favorite prey of the sheepshead, are also very sensitive to changes in water conditions because they are filter feeders and, in the case of oysters, they cannot move to new places when their existing habitat becomes polluted. In order to break through the hard shells of crabs, oysters, mussels, shrimp and barnacles, sheepshead use their uniquely strong teeth. Sheepshead teeth look eerily like human teeth, and perform the same function of grinding and masticating a tough omnivore’s diet. Sheepsheads’ other favorite foods include plants, seaweed and algae. hiltonhead.com

RECREATIONAL PATHWAYS GUIDE

The Town of Hilton Head Island provides nearly 60 miles of public pathways and nature trails for the enjoyment of pedestrians and cyclists.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ON THE PATHS: • Obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws. • Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users. • Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles. • Do not ride on roads when a pathway is available. • Ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists.

please move off the pathway. • Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flashlight. Bicycles must have a red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night. • When approaching slower pathway users from behind, please sound your warning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left. • Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under.

• WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you.

• Make eye contact and use hand signals. Assume other bicyclists and motorists don’t see you. Hand signals tell motorists and other path users what you intend to do and will ensure everyone’s safety on the paths.

• Yield to pedestrians. When resting or stopped,

• Be courteous, alert and predictable.

• WHITE DIAMONDS INDICATE RESTRICTED TRAVEL LANE: Travel with the flow of traffic. • WHITE STRIPE & STOP SIGN INDICATE ROAD CROSSING: Stop and look for motorists. • YELLOW CENTER LINE INDICATES TWO-WAY TRAFFIC: Keep to the right. • SEVERAL WHITE DIAGONAL STRIPES INDICATE A CROSSWALK: Watch out for other bicyclists, pedestrians and motorists. • At low tide, the Island’s 12 miles of beaches are ideal for biking. Public beaches are indicated on the Island Events map. • Our map also shows the existing public pathways. Many kiosks are located along the pathways with an Island-wide map on one side and a localized map of the area on the other. hiltonhead.com

Article ticle and photo by Miles Altman, Bayrunner Fishing Charters

Thirty miles south of Hilton Head off the coast of Georgia is the JY Reef. Much like the Betsy Ross Reef just 20 miles out of the Port Royal Sound, it’s located at the edge of a deep drop off. Both reefs are well-known haunts of the sought-after game fish the cobia, and May is primetime for these big battlers that average 15-80 lbs. Once very prolific, the cobia population has declined significantly due to a recent explosion in the numbers of humans and boats, and they are now heavily regulated. Naturally curious, cobia will often swim right up to the boat, which is very exciting! They can also be a great frustration to anglers, as they will sometimes readily take a bait, and other times completely ignore every temptation presented. On one particular trip to the JY Reef on a beautiful May day, no sooner had we throttled back when a pair of cobia swam right up to the boat. One of them was well over a hundred pounds and easily the biggest cobia I have ever seen! Grabbing bait, I dropped it right in front of them, and to my dismay, it was grabbed by the smaller one. We fought him just the same, giving the monster cobia time to slide off into the deep. Twenty minutes later, we boated the “little guy," and he ended up being 60 lbs! I’ll admit, it was probably the only time I was ever unhappy with a 60 lb fish, but I’m certain his buddy must have been double his size. 60 Island Events May 2022

Did you know that inshore cobia are a different family from the ones found well offshore? In our state waters, cobia are not allowed to be retained in the month of May as it is the prime spawning season for these noble fish. In federal waters, you can keep several fish but I always recommend just one, as that typically provides more than enough food for most everyone. In recent years (before the closing in May), you could find up to 500 boats fishing the Broad River, and with numbers like that it’s no wonder the fish have suffered such a decline. Even now, where you would rarely see a couple of boats 30 miles offshore, it’s not uncommon to see a hundred boats on the reef during Cobia Season! I heartily recommend that you experience cobia fishing, as it is truly one of our most exciting game fish here in the Lowcountry. I also heartily recommend safely releasing these awesome creatures so that we will be able to enjoy them in the future...tight lines! Capt. Miles Altman of Bayrunner Fishing Charters has more than 42 years of experience fishing. Don't miss the Finatic boat which accommodates up to 12 passengers and features a special 3-hour shark/dolphin eco-tour trip. Contact Capt. Miles at (843) 290-6955 to book an unforgettable inshore or offshore charter fishing trip, departing from Shelter Cove Marina. hiltonhead.com

Golf’s Most Important Move: The Amazing Downswing

By Doug Weaver, Director of Instruction, Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy

L

ong ago, on the 1989 PGA Tour, I was fortunate to be ranked 5th in driving distance though I was competing with Davis Love III, John Daly and other top distance drivers. Spectators would constantly ask us why we did not swing harder. Our default reply? "I just don’t need to." MLB player (and excellent golfer) Mark McGwire would often say that most of his home runs resulted when he was simply trying to hit it “solid.” So, how does it work? The movement of the downswing is similar to a baseball swing or a tennis forehand. The sequence starts from the ground up and every muscle from the toes to the nose are contributing power to the swing. Amazingly, a 250-pound golfer can be easily out-driven by a 125-pound player and a 20-year-old athlete frustrated by a lack of technique can be defeated by a 70-year old player! 62 Island Events May 2022

Many golfers make the mistake of initiating the downswing with their hands, arms, and shoulders instead of using their feet, knees and hips. But proper footwork leads to the knees, thighs and hips leading the downswing and the arms following and falling into position. This sequence of movement leads to more power, better accuracy and consistency. When executed properly, the swing is powerful and the sensations are flowing, fluid and effortless. t truly is amazing Want to see an effortless downswing in action? Come see us out on the green at Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy! Carolina’s PGA Teacher of the Year, Doug Weaver is the Director of Instruction at the Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy. He conducts “Where Does the Power Come From?” a free interactive clinic and demonstration every Monday from 4-5 p.m. at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Course. HOROSCOPE ARIES

How often does your phone leave your side? If the answer is never or almost never (and there are no extenuating circumstances), this needs to be remedied. Whether it’s books, nature, people’s microexpressions or just a sense of absorption, you’re missing out.

TAURUS

You’re putting off a conversation you need to have. The longer you wait, the more you have to keep it in the back of your mind and more stress will result. Schedule a time to have it so that you can let go of this unnecessary burden.

GEMINI

So many factors contribute to our moods these days: lack of sunlight, poor sleep, too much screen time, too much caffeine, eating on the go, the stress of a fast-paced life. You’ve got a pretty good idea what’s got you down. The question is: what will you do about it?

CANCER

You may get called out on one of your patterns this month. Try to put aside your ego and focus on what is being said to you. How might it help you move forward?

LEO Where are you on the path to work/life balance? It’s a buzzword, sure, but if you aren’t even trying to achieve it, you’re doing something wrong. This month, put some thought into it. VIRGO

Much like your body, your home will tell you when something is just not working. The dining room table has drifted and requires squeezing by it, the rug gets caught in the door. Freeing up these little snags can contribute to more calm in your day. This month, try it! 66 Island Events May 2022

MAY 2022 LIBRA You’re trying to be many things to one person and you may be feeling exhausted. This month, consider your motivations, your fuel reserves, and your endgame. Is it worth it? A Sagittarius will make quite an impact on you this month. SCORPIO

Your transition from winter to spring may be a little slow this year. Your reluctance to leave the coziness and come outside to play is understandable. What might help get you excited to push yourself back into the natural world?

SAGITTARIUS

Avoidance isn’t usually your game, so why are you playing it now? This thing you’ve now got hanging over your head is only clouding your judgment and darkening your day. Dispense with the dreaded task at the beginning of this month and lighten your load!

CAPRICORN

Inspiration doesn’t come cheap. If you’re experiencing moments of creative clarity, make space for them. Period! Don’t waste what so many chase and never reach.

AQUARIUS

A gathering of friends doesn’t have to be a big affair, you know. This month, make some space in your calendar to host a Get-together. Invite the people you like, and ask them to bring things. It’s that simple!

PISCES This month you may experience a two-pathsdiverged-in-the-woods moment. To prepare, imagine embracing the adventure of the unknown rather than fearing it. hiltonhead.com

Captain William Hilton sailed the British ship Adventure north from Barbados, scouting lands to grow sugar cane for the crown. Approaching the Island by way of Port Royal Sound, he encountered a sliver of land and called it “Hilton’s Headland.” Native Americans came to hunt and fish.

1663

17th, 18th & 19th Centuries

For many years, few permanent residents made their home on Hilton Head Island. Though the humid, subtropical climate was ideal for growing agricultural crops like cotton and rice, fear of disease and isolation kept antebellum plantation owners on the mainland. Africans worked the plantations, and their unique blend of African and European traditions gave birth to the Gullah culture, which survives even today. hiltonhead.com

19th s

The Civil War brought big changes to Hilton Head Island. At the onset of the conflict, the South erected Fort Walker to protect the port. When the fort fell, tens of thousands of Union troops, prisoners, missionaries, shopkeepers and enslaved men and women seeking asylum flooded the Island. Suddenly humming with activity, Hilton Head became instrumental in the North’s blockade of nearby Southern ports. In 1863, the town of Mitchelville became the first self-governed town for freed men and women.

1861-1865

Post Civil War1956

Developer and environmentalist Charles E. Fraser began work on the Island’s first resort, which he called Sea Pines. Fraser is sometimes called the father of the modern resort, and his vision for the Island was progressive, even by modern standards. His determination that no building be “higher than the tallest tree,” as well as his rejection of flashy neon signs, became central to the Island’s distinctive character.

Late 1950s

Today

After the Civil War, the Island’s population dropped to around 3,000, and by 1940, it had fallen to just over 1,000. Electricity finally came to the Island in 1950 and, six years later, Hilton Head’s very first bridge to the mainland made the area significantly more accessible. Fraser’s legacy lives on in Hilton Head Island’s balance of commerce with green spaces, golf courses with wild places and thoroughfares with biking trails. Recently voted the Best Island in the U.S. by Travel and Leisure readers for the fifth time, this familyfriendly Sea Island seamlessly combines luxury, adventure and charm – all in one unforgettable destination. hiltonhead.com

nated for the Alder Lane, Coligny, Driessen, Folly Field and Islanders Beach Parks. The boundaries will be clearly marked on the beach and in the water. Lifeguards are stationed at these designated areas for assistance and beach information.

Beach Marker Signs:

Hilton Head’s beaches are marked near the dune line with signs to let emergency responders know where assistance is needed. They are also useful as a reference point if you or your group should become lost.

Beach Safety Tips: • Apply and reapply plenty of sunscreen even on cloudy days. • Wear sunglasses to prevent damage from the sun. • Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water. • Be aware of the rules and regulations of the beach. Signs are posted near most beach accesses. • Don’t leave your kids unsupervised even in guarded areas. • Note the location of the nearest lifeguard and report any hazardous conditions to him or her. • Know the name of the beach or hotel/ condo and the beach marker number where you are staying if you should need assistance. • There are often jellyfish and stingrays, as well as other sea life in and out of the water, which may sting or cut a person. In any situation where first aid is needed, find a lifeguard or seek further medical attention. • Call or wave for help if you are in trouble. hiltonhead.com

Water Safety Tips: • Don’t enter the water if you can’t swim. • Swim near a lifeguard. • Ask the lifeguard about any dangers in the water or on the beach, especially if he or she is flying a yellow caution flag. • Be aware of direction and strength of longshore currents. These currents can take you up and down the beach quickly and cause you or your kids to get lost. • Don’t let your kids swim unsupervised even in guarded areas. • Don’t swim alone. Use the buddy system so that someone always knows where you are so they can get help if needed. • Don’t overestimate your swimming ability. Stay in chest-deep or less water to insure you don’t get stuck in water over your head. • Don’t rely on flotation devices. • Swim parallel to shore if you want to swim long distances. • Don’t swim against the current. Swim across the current to escape the pull. • Always swim sober. • Don’t dive into unknown water or shallow breaking waves. Always go feet first.
