This first wine of the fall harvest is a beloved French tradition.

Beaujolais Nouveau O

ne minute after midnight on the third Thursday of November, millions of cases of Beaujolais Nouveau make their way from the French countryside to Paris, where they will be shipped around the world. The last leg of the journey can be anything from a truck or a helicopter to an elephant or a rickshaw. Expediency is important. French law requires that Beaujolais Nouveau be released no earlier than the third Thursday of November. What began as a local ritual in the Beaujolais region of France, where pitchers of wine straight from the barrel are served in local cafĂŠs, has become a worldwide race to serve the first wine of the harvest. The region of Beaujolais is 34 miles long from north to south and seven to nine miles wide. There are nearly 4,000 grape growers who make their living in this picturesque region just north of France's third largest city, Lyon. While technically part of the Burgundy region, the climate is warmer and the grapes tend to ripen earlier. Most wines in Beaujolais are made from the thin-skinned red grape, Gamay Noir, which is a cross between Pinot Noir and the central European grape, Gouais. Gamay Noir ripens earlier and is easier to cultivate than Pinot Noir. Most wines from this region are not released immediately as Beaujolais Nouveau, but are aged in oak barrels for years, producing a light-bodied red wine with high acidity and low tannins. The wine has red berry flavors, and some of the better vintages are similar to a fine Pinot Noir.

14 Island Events November 2019

The nature of the Gamay Noir grape and a special fermentation process are what make a very young Beaujolais Nouveau highly drinkable. Since the Gamay Noir grape has a thin skin, it contains less tannins, a bitter substance found in grape skins that typically need to mellow with age. The special fermentation process is called “carbonic maceration. Simply put, instead of the traditional method of crushing the wine grapes before fermentation, whole grapes are put in the tank. The tanks are then pumped with carbon dioxide. As a result, the fermentation actually occurs inside the grape. This process creates extremely fruity aromas of banana and even bubblegum. Since Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November, it is assured that Beaujolais Nouveau will arrive on time for dinner. And, indeed, many Lowcountry families have a bottle on the table. A light-bodied red wine such as a Beaujolais is the perfect accompaniment to a traditional Thanksgiving turkey dinner. However, some people find the overwhelmingly fruity aromas of the Nouveau version too distracting. Therefore, I recommend also having an aged version of Beaujolais on the table as well.

Happy Thanksgiving! The perfect bottle of hand-crafted artisan wine awaits at Island Winery on Cardinal Rd. Wine by the glass, cheese platters and $5 tastings are available Monday-Saturday from 12:30-5:30 p.m. and Sunday from 12-4 p.m. (843) 842-3141 or www.islandwinery.com. hiltonhead.com

Horoscope November 2019 ARIES Being able to admit a mistake is a sign of maturity and a sure way to dispel tension after wrongdoing. An Aquarius you know well will give you some good advice this month. Be brave enough to take it to heart.

LIBRA Are you on the lookout for clues about something and then ignoring them when you see them? Face your fears and find out what’s up. At least you can take some sort of action once you know what you’re dealing with.

TAURUS Be careful not to take care of everyone else this month and forget to take care of yourself. When someone offers to help, graciously accept their assistance. This is a lucky time of year for you to take a long-awaited risk.

SCORPIO Don't let nostalgia for the past blind you to the brightness of the present. Lean in to now and prepare to be dazzled. This is an ideal month to show appreciation for the people in your life who truly care about you.

GEMINI Spread your wings this month and work to show what you’re really capable of doing. Make an effort to get more exercise and keep your body healthy and strong. An old friend will help you work through some big questions.

SAGITTARIUS When someone does something nice for you this month, make sure to show your gratitude. Remember that the holidays offer an ideal chance to reconnect with loved ones and to prioritize what’s really important in life.

CANCER What are you listening to these days? Is it helping you create a healthy headspace? Try something that will actively improve your life: a new podcast, a great audio book or that language you’ve been longing to learn. You’re never too old to learn something new.

CAPRICORN Don’t let worry drown out joy. Try to recognize and appreciate your many blessings, rather than bemoaning what you don’t have. This is your month to shine, but you may need to get out of your own way first.

LEO Let go of your tension this

month and remember that nothing looks as incredible on you as happiness. Think of something wonderful in your life and smile. Don’t be afraid to help someone in need. They may need you more than you realize.

VIRGO Make a bucket list, and choose something important to tackle. Once you have it, break it down into steps. Select a day this month to take a meaningful first step. You’ll be amazed at what may result. 28 Island Events November 2019

AQUARIUS Invest your time in someone less fortunate this month and set a good example. Bring a little sunshine into the world by spreading optimism and sharing kindness every chance you get. PISCES Don’t waste so much time looking for things you’ve lost. Instead, give yourself a break and designate some go-to places. Then use that extra time to revel in the feeling of the sun on your back, a cool breeze or that first sip of a cold drink. Appreciate the little things in life. hiltonhead.com

RECREATIONAL PATHWAYS GUIDE The Town of Hilton Head Island provides nearly 60 miles of public pathways and nature trails for the enjoyment of pedestrians and cyclists.

RULES FOR THE ROAD: • Please obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws. • Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users. • Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles. • Please do not ride on roads when a pathway is available. • Please ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists. • WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you. • Please yield to pedestrians. When resting or stopped, please move off the pathway.

• Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flashlight. Bicycles must have a red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night. • When approaching slower pathway users from behind, please sound your warning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left. • Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under. • Make eye contact and use hand signals. Assume other bicyclists and motorists don’t see you. Hand signals tell motorists and other path users what you intend to do and will ensure everyone’s safe enjoyment of the paths. Be courteous, alert and predictable.

unlike the summer trout, which have dashes. Like most members of the saltwater trout family, they have a pair of vampire-like fangs that, when used with their bone-jarring strike, help hold the prey. These fish are very aggressive and will often attack prey almost as large as themselves.

he first cast of the dimly lit grey of early morning sunrise was met with a jarring crash of the hard plastic lure, as the large speckled trout smashed it with vengeance. The light spinning reel drag screamed in protest, as the trout made a long run in search of freedom. Back and forth the battle continued, until finally the trout came to the boat. Scooping the nice trout into a net to avoid losing it — the recommended procedure as they have a papery thin mouth membrane — dinner was secured! November and December are some of my favorite months for fishing, as temperatures cool and the water clarity improves. While anglers can and do use artificials all year, I’m far more confident in clearer water conditions to unleash my arsenal of soft and hard plastics. There are a plethora of types and colors available, and most can be used with success, if fished properly. Speckled trout are beautiful fish with a silvery backside sprinkled with spots, 50 Island Events November 2019

Speckled trout are a schooling fish and, when located, make for a spirited angling session. They can be targeted on topwater, the mid-column and often on the bottom with a slow-retrieved screw or paddle-tail jig. Another tried-andtrue technique involves using live bait, shrimp or mud minnows underneath a popping cork and fishing along the marsh edge. Generally speaking, the rising tide is the best time for this method. Speckled trout populations are often affected by deep cold spells, but the last few winters have been mild. The abundance of small trout we’ve observed this spring offer the promise of a speck-tacular (no pun intended) season this winter. By law, the minimum size is 14 inches, and you can keep up to 10 of these tasty battlers. For the most fun, I recommend a light to medium-light 7-foot rod with a small spinning reel and 10-pound test. Tight lines! Capt. Miles Altman of Bayrunner Fishing Charters has more than 42 years experience fishing the waters surrounding Hilton Head Island. The Finatic boat can accommodate up to 12 passengers. Enjoy the Outdoors There are so many ways to experience the Lowcountry’s wild beauty this season. By Anneliza Itkor, Outside Hilton Head November is a great time to enjoy the outdoors with your family and friends. With Thanksgiving just around the corner — and relatives from all over the country flocking to Hilton Head Island like migratory birds — it could be helpful to have some plans and ideas in place to get everyone outside. First and foremost, it’s important to prepare any visitors for your adventuring plans with guidance on how to dress for a November escapade. The average temperatures in November here on the Island range between a low of 49 degrees and a high of 70 degrees. The key to having an awesome outdoor experience in cooler weather is to dress appropriately. Advise visiting family to bring layers to accommodate potential 20-degree temperature swings. A breathable base layer — topped with a fleece and jacket — would be a solid fall plan. Take into consideration that winter tends to be rather wet here on Hilton Head Island, so waterproof gear would be a smart addition to any suitcase. If you’re planning on getting out on the water, remember that jackets, pants and shoes that are quick-dry and/or water-resistant are a better choice than clothes made out of natural fibers like cotton and wool. Bear in mind that it can feel chillier on or near the water, so packing a knit hat and a pair of gloves would also be a good idea. Many people may think kayaking or boating is a summertime activity, but our tidal marshes are stunning in the late fall, with the Spartina grass taking on a golden hue and our water clearing as the phytoplankton begins to die back. Near the shore, you can spot American Oyster Catchers, Piping Plovers and Willets. Our resident bottlenose dolphin can be spied frolicking in local waterways. Plus, mussels and 52 Island Events November 2019

periwinkle snails can be seen in the high marsh. You can either arrange to rent kayaks or a pontoon boat and explore on your own, or book one of Outside Hilton Head’s guided kayak or boat excursions. Biking is another fantastic fall option to get a group outside and exploring. Don’t have a bike in the garage for Uncle Frank and Aunt Sue? Outside Hilton Head can deliver bikes right to your door to use for the day or the week. Bike on the beach or take advantage of the miles of bike trails on the Island. Want to ramp up the fun? Take a guided Pedego tour of Hilton Head Island or Palmetto Bluff and enjoy the thrill of zipping from place to place on these electrical-assisted bikes. You can also gear up the group and head out for a hike. Mitchelville Beach Park at low tide is a real treat. You’ll discover all kinds of cool ocean critters wandering on the mud flats and see birds feeding in scores of tidal pools. Pinckney Island Wildlife Refuge is another great hiking choice. Be sure to bring water — and be aware there are no bathroom facilities on-site. However, these minor inconveniences are well worth the incredible beauty of the vast stretches of marsh and the bird life that festoons the freshwater lagoons. It’s understandable that dropping temperatures can make you want to curl up on the couch and grab the remote. But this fall, get out, explore the beauty of the Lowcountry and think about all that we have to be thankful for here on Hilton Head Island. Visit outsidehiltonhead.com to discover all the ways you and your family can #getoutside this month. To book an outing with Outside Hilton Head, call (843) 686-6996 or visit outsidehiltonhead.com.

Tee Time Experience life at its best playing golf. By Doug Weaver, Director of Instruction, Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy

W

alking down the golf course fairway, anticipating playful mental and physical challenges ahead, is a delightful experience.

I feel a soft breeze, see the big sky and reflect upon my execution strategy. My heartbeat increases, I systematically breathe and my heart rate decreases. I wiggle my hands, and then I casually approach the ball. Next, I continue with light breathing, soften my arms and turn rhythmically, using my natural pace. Watch that ball go! Experiences are powerful. Striking a golf ball correctly is exhilarating, smooth and effortless, like water flowing down a waterfall. It’s difficult to believe how fast the ball goes with such little effort. No muscle power required. Experiences are eternal and can be stored as memories that can be easily accessed. At the next social event, ask someone about their favorite golf experience. Look for the immediate smile that lingers during the story. The next purchase of a material thing is temporary. Experiences are a fundamental part of our identity. Material items are merely a facade. Experiences dwell deep within us and emanate out through our smile, resulting in a passion for golf, which is truly a game for a lifetime. Experiences empower us as we overcome challenges and participate in this moderate exercise. When we share golf with others close to us, it is especially satisfying. Recently, a golfer was faced with a 50-yard golf shot over a large, tall bunker. I wanted to suggest going around, but I remained silent. The player went directly over the tallest bunker, toward the flag and the ball landed successfully near the flag. He jumped for joy and ran to the ball to putt it 54 Island Events November 2019

in. He now looks forward to the next challenge. Experiences can be anticipated, as you prepare for a golf game in the future. The golf experience encourages you to stretch, walk, sleep and eat correctly. This can improve your game as well as your life. Experiences are enjoyable from the very first moments of planning, all the way through to the memories that can be cherished forever. We can be defined by things we have seen, things we have done and places we have been. I invite you to play Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort’s three exceptional golf courses and to experience golf — and life — at its best. Let’s make some memorable experiences. I hope to see you out on the course! A former PGA Tour pro and member of the local golf Hall of Fame, Doug Weaver is the Director of Instruction at the Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy. nated for the Alder Lane, Coligny, Driessen, Folly Field and Islanders Beach Parks. The boundaries will be clearly marked on the beach and in the water. Lifeguards are stationed at these designated areas for assistance and beach information.

Beach Marker Signs:

Hilton Head’s beaches are marked near the dune line with signs to let emergency responders know where assistance is needed. They are also useful as a reference point if you or your group should become lost.

Beach Safety Tips: • Apply and reapply plenty of sunscreen even on cloudy days. • Wear sunglasses to prevent damage from the sun. • Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water. • Be aware of the rules and regulations of the beach. Signs are posted near most beach accesses. • Don’t leave your kids unsupervised even in guarded areas. • Note the location of the nearest lifeguard and report any hazardous conditions to him or her. • Know the name of the beach or hotel/ condo and the beach marker number where you are staying if you should need assistance. • There are often jellyfish and stingrays, as well as other sea life in and out of the water, which may sting or cut a person. In any situation where first aid is needed, find a lifeguard or seek further medical attention. • Call or wave for help if you are in trouble.

hiltonhead.com

Water Safety Tips: • Don’t enter the water if you can’t swim. • Swim near a lifeguard. • Ask the lifeguard about any dangers in the water or on the beach, especially if he or she is flying a yellow caution flag. • Be aware of direction and strength of longshore currents. These currents can take you up and down the beach quickly and cause you or your kids to get lost. • Don’t let your kids swim unsupervised even in guarded areas. • Don’t swim alone. Use the buddy system so that someone always knows where you are so they can get help if needed. • Don’t overestimate your swimming ability. Stay in chest deep or less water to insure you don’t get stuck in water over your head. • Don’t rely on flotation devices. • Swim parallel to shore if you want to swim long distances. • Don’t swim against the current. Swim across the current to escape the pull. • Always swim sober. • Don’t dive into unknown water or shallow breaking waves. Always go feet first.
