HILTON HEAD HISTORY

Hilton Head Island has a long and rich history of visitors.

Captain William Hilton sailed the British ship Adventure north from Barbados, scouting lands to grow sugar cane for the crown. Approaching the Island by way of Port Royal Sound, he encountered a sliver of land and called it “Hilton’s Headland.”

Native Americans came to hunt and fish.

Thousands of Years Ago

Conquistadors explored the area.

For many years, few permanent residents made their home on Hilton Head Island. Though the humid, subtropical climate was ideal for growing agricultural crops like cotton and rice, fear of disease and isolation kept antebellum plan tation owners on the mainland. Africans worked the plantations, and their unique blend of African and European traditions gave birth to the Gullah culture, which survives even today.

The Civil War brought big changes to Hilton Head Island. At the onset of the conflict, the South erected Fort Walker to protect the port. When the fort fell, tens of thousands of Union troops, prisoners, mis sionaries, shopkeepers and enslaved men and women seeking asylum flooded the Island. Suddenly humming with activity, Hilton Head became instrumental in the North’s blockade of nearby Southern ports. In 1863, the town of Mitchelville became the first self-governed town for freed men and women.

Developer and environmentalist Charles E. Fraser began work on the Island’s first resort, which he called Sea Pines. Fraser is sometimes called the father of the modern resort, and his vision for the Island was progressive, even by modern standards. His determination that no building be “higher than the tallest tree,” as well as his rejection of flashy neon signs, became central to the Island’s distinctive character.

Post Civil War1956 Late 1950s Today

After the Civil War, the Island’s population dropped to around 3,000, and by 1940, it had fallen to just over 1,000. Electricity finally came to the Island in 1950 and, six years later, Hilton Head’s very first bridge to the mainland made the area significantly more accessible.

Fraser’s legacy lives on in Hilton Head Island’s balance of commerce with green spaces, golf courses with wild places and thoroughfares with biking trails. GREEN’S SHELL ENCLOSURE

The 3-acre Green’s Shell Enclosure Heritage Preserve is an archaeolog ical site dating back to 1335 A.D. This trail is located near the top of Hilton Head Island, just off of Squire Pope Rd.

From the parking area, you will walk on a road to this short, easy trail, which will take you into the past. You will pass a cemetery and cross over a ramp to an overlook at the end of the trail. Green’s Shell Enclosure is a low earthen embankment, two- to six-feet high, that dates back to the Irene Period of 1300 to 1450 A.D. Covering two acres, this embankment was once a orti ed village uilt armers who used shells for everything from tools to objects used for religious rituals.

Stay on the trail and do not remove anything from this preserve. Bring insect repellent during the warm months.

Directions on Hilton Head Island: From the intersection of US 278 and Squire Pope Rd., turn left into Greens Park. Entrance to the preserve is on the left at the gate. Go around the gate and walk on the road past the cemetery to the entrance ramp.

JARVIS CREEK LEISURE LOOP

The Leisure Loop at Jarvis Creek Park is an easy .85 mile paved loop. The loop starts behind the restrooms. There’s a small pier at the start of the trail with access to a dock. If you start off counterclock ise ou ll ass a tness station to our le t Pathways extend all over the park and around the lake creating a 1.1 mile loop. Runners, joggers and walkers are all welcome to explore the lakeside paths that extend out into wooded areas. This paved trail is equipped with wooden bridges over marshy areas, so no one has to get their feet too dirty.

There are nine pieces of outdoor training equipment in a peaceful area behind a live oak, and the park was designed with exercising in mind! Each station has a set of instructions that ex plains how to use the equipment and perform the exercise. You even get a beautiful view of the lake while you’re strengthening your core.

AUDUBON NEWHALL PRESERVE

The Hilton Head Island Audubon Society owns and operates the Audubon Newhall Preserve, located on Palmetto Bay Rd. It is open to the public at no charge.

The Audubon Newhall Preserve is a series of short, easy walking, interconnected trails t roug a t acre nature preserve. A trail guide is available at the entrance. You will see a wide variety of trees and plants, from Florida scrub to native hard woods. A feature of the preserve is a rare pocosin (the Indian word for bog), which was once a characteristic feature of barrier islands.

Directions: From US 278 near the entrance to Hilton Head Island: Turn right onto the Cross Island Parkway. When you reach Palmetto Bay Rd., watch for the Audubon Newhall Preserve sign on the right. SEA PINES FOREST PRESERVE

An easy walk or ride through a maritime forest and marsh land in this well-protected preserve. The preserve has a 4,000-year-old Indian shell ring a ild o er meado it do ens o o er variet ies, fresh water lakes suitable or s ing and a ounti ul bird habitat.

Shade is plentiful during the summer months. Restrooms,

drinking water and a picnic area are available in the center of the preserve at Fish Island.

The land has been sculpted by changing sea levels over t e ast ears and traces o t e rst inhabitants still remain. The Indian Shell Ring is 4,000-years-old and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Drinking/possession of alcohol on Hilton Head’s public beaches is illegal and could result in a fine of up to $500.

Roundabouts:

You might as well learn to love South Carolina’s roundabouts. They’re everywhere! There are just a few rules to follow in the two-lane roundabout:

• The drivers already in the roundabout have the right of way.

• Always yield to them before entering the roundabout.

• A roundabout is like any other flowing traffic—don’t stop in the middle.

• As annoying as it can be to get behind a big slow vehicle, it’s even worse to be stuck beside it in a roundabout. Just wait.

•Like with intersections, don’t change lanes while in the roundabout.

Beaches:

There are a few rules we all need to keep in mind to ensure a safe experience for everyone who comes to Hilton Head. It is therefore very important to remember that there is:

•No sleeping on the beach between midnight and 6 a.m.

•No driving on the beach

•No horses on the beach

•No fires on the beach

•No fireworks on the beach (you need a permit to set off fireworks anywhere on Hilton Head, and an offense will result in a misdemeanor and a $500 fine)

RECREATIONAL PATHWAYS GUIDE

The Town of Hilton Head Island provides nearly 60 miles of public pathways and nature trails for the enjoyment of pedestrians and cyclists.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ON THE PATHS:

• Obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws.

• Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users.

• Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles.

• Do not ride on roads when a pathway is available.

• Ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists.

• WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you.

• Yield to pedestrians. When resting or stopped,

please move off the pathway.

• Most sections of the pathways are not illuminat ed. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flashlight. Bicycles must have a red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night.

• When approaching slow er pathway users from behind, please sound your warning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left.

• Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under.

• Make eye contact and use hand signals. Assume other bicyclists and motor ists don’t see you. Hand signals tell motorists and other path users what you intend to do and will ensure everyone’s safety on the paths.

• Be courteous, alert and predictable.

Fall brings about a wonderful time in the Lowcountry that allows us to truly appre ciate the bounties of our environment. Shellfish harvesting is a large part of our sea island lifestyle. It brings the community together over meals, to bond and appreci ate our natural resources. Oysters, clams and ribbed mussels are the major players when it comes to our non-summer harvests.

The Atlantic ribbed mussel, Geukensia dem issa, is the most common mussel species in our area. They are also known as the horsemussel. They live within the inter-tidal zone, the space between the high and low tide lines. They can be found partially buried in our pluff mud, found among oyster reefs or attached to pilings and other hard substrates. Their natural habitat is found along the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts. They have been identified from Maine to Florida.

They are oval shaped bivalves, named for the prominent ribs running the length of their shell. They have a narrow blunt head that tapers to their connective joint. They are glossy, rang ing from olive-brown to olive-black. At times you may be able to find patches of white or yellow on the outside of their shells. The interior of their shell ranges in highly glossy purple hues. During breeding season you can identify males from females by taking a look at the interior soft tissue that encloses the body. Females will be a medium brown tone, while males will be a yellow or cream color.

Adult ribbed mussels have been known to live up to 15 years. On average they will reach lengths of up to 10 inches. You can identify the age of a mussel by counting the ribs on the outside of the shell. They will reach their

maturity at 12 millimeters. Spawning occurs once a year, usually between June and September. Eggs and sperm are released into the water column, where fertilization takes place. It is thought that only 55 percent of larvae will make it through their first year. This is due to severe cold water temperature and freezing in shallow estuaries. They are highly adaptive organisms. They can withstand both significantly high and low salin ity levels. They are susceptible to freezing if such weather conditions occur and they can live in temperatures up to 133 degrees Fahrenheit. Mussels are able to move slowly through the estuary, using a muscular foot. They are also able to anchor to hard substrates, using byssus threads (a cluster of fibers), which produce a cement-like substance to ensure their grip.

Ribbed mussels are filter feeders. When the tide is high, they will suck water into their shells, where their gills will then remove plankton and algae for the mussel to consume. A single mussel can filter 6.8 liters of water each hour when submerged. If a mussel is covered by water for 12 hours a day, that means they are filtering almost 22 gallons of water each day, per mussel. Because of their consumption of bacteria, South Carolinians do not harvest mussels in the summer months. Warmer water creates more bacteria and thus could be a danger for human consumption. Harvesting season usually occurs in any month with an “R” in it. It is also important to harvest ribbed mussels at a high tide, when their valves continuously open and close. During a low tide, the mussel closes its valve and retains water in its body for the duration of the low tide. By any measure, Lowcountry tidal salt marshes are dynam ic environments throughout the year. Populations of dolphin shift, migrating birds return, fishing strategies change and grasslands alternate between verdant green and rich gold.

In November, one particularly welcome sight is the majestic Bald Eagle. Soaring with intention, wings spread flat and wide, this raptor’s identity remains uncertain until I see the flash of white on its head and tail.

Bald Eagles begin returning to the Lowcountry in late August, having spent the summer months in and around the Chesapeake Bay. They are our earliest nesters, re-establishing their pair bonds, engaging in courtship behaviors and cooperatively refurbishing their nest in late fall and early winter.

Typically, two eggs are laid in huge nests most often built in crags of dead (or minimally foliated) trees high above the ground. Both male and female care for the precious eggs, carefully folding their talons under their feet to prevent piercing them.

Incubation generally continues for a month. Bald Eagle chicks are nurtured by both parents and remain in the nest for another two more months or so. Fledglings prepare to leave the nest in March and April. What a sight to see, in early spring, the stretching and flapping of the fledglings as they prepare to fly off on their own.

Fledges, by the way, are adult-sized when they leave the nest. And, with the additional down and somewhat longer tail (all the better for the first flying lessons!) they appear to be even bigger than the adults. The distinctive white head and white tail are adult plumage. Generally speak-

ing, it will be several years before the juveniles acquire these signature feathers.

My first sightings of a Bald Eagle this year occurred in late August. I was delighted to watch, on one occasion, a single bird circling 50 feet above the surface of the water. Then, with clear intent, the eagle focused on a singular disturbance on the calm water. Extending both legs, then talons forward, it swooped down and captured a fairly large redfish from the river.

While it’s not unusual to see eagles on Hilton Head Island, we rarely see this behavior in our area. Generally speaking, eagles prefer carrion, or dead stuff. Interestingly, eagles prefer live quarry during mating season and in the off-season become rather lazy and shift their diet to carrion.

Kids Catch Lifelong Memories Fishing

M y earliest fishing memories took place in Puerto Rico.

Being a Navy brat, my dad was stationed there for three years. I was blessed to have a Japanese lady angel by the name of Jeannie take me under her wing. Jeannie was married to a sailor buddy of my dad’s, and she had a passion for fishing that matches anyone I have run across in all of my years of fishing.

I was charged with collecting the bait, which was hermit crabs. These critters were everywhere in Puerto Rico. As soon as I had a croaker sack full to the point I couldn’t carry anymore, I’d go to Miss Jeannie’s house.

She’d grab the rods, and we would head over to the long piers that jutted out into the clear Puerto Rican waters to enjoy an afternoon of fishing.

Cracking the hermit crab’s shell with a hammer exposed the soft tail. This was the “hot” bait, hermit crab tail. Many snapper, grunts and jacks would fall to this delicacy. Not only were many fish hooked, but so was I. I don’t think I could forget Jeannie if I wanted to.

A few years later, my step father, also a Navy man,

stepped into my life and expanded my love of fishing. Stationed in Oregon, he would take me to the Columbia River, where we would tip hooks with salmon eggs and catch trout and steelhead. With the patience of Job, he schooled me in the art of using spinning tackle.

I hold great memories of introducing my kids, Caleb and Sarah to fishing. Caleb has been fishing for years and has a 45 pound cobia and a 35 pound mahi under his belt. Sarah can tell you about the time she caught six butterfish all at once. These are experiences I would not trade for any amount of money.

What Football and Golf Have in Common

Football and golf are wildly different sports, there’s no doubt about it. From team vs. solo play and the attire of the game to the pace of play and the pitch of the sounds around you, there are many elements that separate. But it’s also worth looking at the similar ities of the two games to understand them better.

To start, golf and football are both games in ic mental tness means a lot. Both sports are played outside in most weather conditions, which can affect the outcome of play. The right equipment also matters in both cases, as does pinpoint accuracy. But to drill down a little further, I would argue that the similarities really come down to the following:

1. Tactics. The development of tactics to overcome the opposition is key.

2. Tactical discipline. Golfers and football players must make a game plan and stick to it.

3. Knowledge of the rules. Missteps with the rules of the game can reak avoc on a oot all eld and in a

golfer’s game.

4. Technical skills. The technical skills required for excellence in both games requires constant drilling and attention. There’s no getting away from it!

Dr. Bob Rotella said that golf is not a game of perfect, and I agree. But longtime football coach Vince Lombardi may have said it best: “Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection, we can catch excellence.” Ready to give it a go? Come see me!

Public Beach Access:

The Town of Hilton Head Island provides nine public beach accesses:

•Alder Lane Beach Access, off South Forest Beach Dr.

•Coligny Beach Park, off Coligny Circle

•Driessen Beach Park, end of Bradley Beach Rd.

•Chaplin Community Park, off Wm. Hilton Pkwy.

•Fish Haul Park & Mitchelville Freedom Park, end of Beach City Rd.

•Burkes Beach Access, end of Burkes Beach Rd.

•Folly Field Beach Park and Islanders Beach Park, both off Folly Field Rd.

Parking & Facilities:

There are 23 metered spaces at Alder Lane, 54 metered spaces at Folly Field and 13 metered spaces at Burkes Beach Road. The parking fee is a QUARTER for each 15 minutes. Additionally, there are 207 spaces at Driessen Beach Park for long-term parking. The fee is a QUARTER for each 15 minutes during the week.

Parking spaces at Islanders BeachPark are ALWAYS reserved for annual beach passes. Parking at Driessen Beach Park for annual beach passes is reserved from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Parking is FREE at Fish Haul Park, Mitchelville Freedom Park and Coligny Beach Park. Handicap parking is available at no fee at all parks.

Restrooms, changing areas, sand showers and vending machines are available.

Designated Swimming Areas:

Official swimming areas have been desig-

nated for the Alder Lane, Coligny, Driessen, Folly Field and Islanders Beach Parks. The boundaries will be clearly marked on the beach and in the water. Lifeguards are stationed at these designated areas for assistance and beach information.

Beach Marker Signs:

Hilton Head’s beaches are marked near the dune line with signs to let emergency responders know where assistance is needed. They are also useful as a reference point if you or your group should become lost.

Beach Safety Tips:

•Apply and reapply plenty of sunscreen even on cloudy days.

•Wear sunglasses to prevent damage from the sun.

•Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water.

•Be aware of the rules and regulations of the beach. Signs are posted near most beach accesses.

•Don’t leave your kids unsupervised even in guarded areas.

•Note the location of the nearest lifeguard and report any hazardous conditions to him or her.

•Know the name of the beach or hotel/ condo and the beach marker number where you are staying if you should need assistance.

•There are often jellyfish and stingrays, as well as other sea life in and out of the water, which may sting or cut a person. In any situation where first aid is needed, find a lifeguard or seek further medical attention.

•Call or wave for help if you are in trouble.

Water Safety Tips:

•Don’t enter the water if you can’t swim.

•Swim near a lifeguard.

•Ask the lifeguard about any dangers in the water or on the beach, especially if he or she is flying a yellow caution flag.

•Be aware of direction and strength of longshore currents. These currents can take you up and down the beach quickly and cause you or your kids to get lost.

•Don’t let your kids swim unsupervised even in guarded areas.

•Don’t swim alone. Use the buddy system so that someone always knows where you are so they can get help if needed.

• Don’t overestimate your swimming ability Stay in chest-deep or less water to insure you don’t get stuck in water over your head.

•Don’t rely on flotation devices.

•Swim parallel to shore if you want to swim long distances.

•Don’t swim against the current. Swim across the current to escape the pull.

•Always swim sober.

•Don’t dive into unknown water or shallow breaking waves. Always go feet first.

Beach Prohibitions:

The following are prohibited on all beaches:

Possession or consumption of alcohol

– Glass (bottles, containers, etc.)

Indecent exposure or nudity

Disorderly conduct

Unauthorized vehicles

Fires and fireworks

Shark fishing

Horseback riding or motorized driving

– Removal, harming or harassment of any

live beach fauna (sea turtles, sand dollars, etc.)

– Removal, alteration, or damage to dunes, sea oats or other indigenous dune flora

Operation, launching or landing of unauthorized motorized watercraft

Unauthorized commercial activity

– Sleeping on the beach between midnight and 6 a.m.

Unauthorized wearing of lifeguard emblems, insignias, etc.

– Solicitation or distribution of handouts

– Kites not under manual control

Parasailing

Additional Prohibitions In Designated Swimming Areas - Peak Season:

(Between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., April 1September 30):

- Fishing or surfcasting

- Surfboards, boogie boards, etc.

- Frisbee or other sports involving a ball

- Games with metal components

- Stunt kites & sand sailing

Animals:

ANIMALS are NOT permitted between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. from the Friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day. Animals MUST be on a leash between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., April 1 through the Thursday before Memorial Day and the Tuesday after Labor Day through September 30. Animals must be on leash or under positive voice control at all other times. Persons in control of animals on the beach are required to remove and properly dispose of excrement. It is illegal to allow pets to chase or harass wildlife.
