Island Trails Walking Paths TAKE the time to enjoy these trails Green’s Shell Enclosure: The 3-acre Green’s Shell Enclosure Heritage Preserve is an archaeological site dating back to 1335 A.D. This trail is located near the nothern top of Hilton Head Island, just off of Squire Pope Rd. From the parking area, you will walk on a road to this short, easy trail, which will take you into the past. You will pass a cemetery and cross over a ramp to an overlook at the end of the trail. Green’s Shell Enclosure is a low earthen embankment, two- to sixfeet high, that dates back to the Irene Period of 1300 to 1450 A.D. Covering two acres, this embankment built by farmers who used shells for everything from tools to objects used for religious rituals. 30 Island Events November 2023

Stay on the trail and do not remove anything from this preserve. Bring insect repellent during the warm months. Hours: Dawn to dusk Directions on Hilton Head Island: From the intersection of US 278 and Squire Pope Rd., turn left into Greens Park. Entrance to the preserve is on the left at the gate. Go around the gate and walk on the road past the cemetery to the entrance ramp.

Jarvis Creek Leisure Loop: The Leisure Loop at Jarvis Creek Park is an easy .85 mile paved loop. The loop starts behind the restrooms. There’s a small pier at the start of the trail with access to a dock. If you start off counterclockwise, you’ll your left.

Pathways extend all over the park and around the lake creating a 1.1 mile loop. Runners, joggers and walkers are all welcome to explore the lakeside paths that extend out into wooded areas. This paved trail is equipped with wooden bridges over marshy areas, so no one has to get their feet too dirty. There are nine pieces of outdoor training equipment in a peaceful area behind a live oak, and the park was designed with exercising in mind! Each station has a set of instructions that explains how to use the equipment and perform the exercise. You even get a beautiful view of the lake while you’re strengthening your core. Lowcountry Oysters By Kathleen McMenamin, Master Naturalist

in, there is nothing better than sharing an oyster roast with friends and family. Oysters from Beaufort County are unique in flavor with a salty sweetness unrivaled by oysters from any other area. South Carolina’s coast is home to Eastern Oysters (Crassostrea virginica). Eastern Oysters can be found in our intertidal zone and, thus, are very tolerant creatures. They can withstand great variations in air exposure, temperature and salinity and are a keystone species for our estuary systems. This means that when the oysters are strong and healthy, so is the rest of the ecosystem, with oyster reefs providing habitat to over 120 varietal species, such as fish, shrimp, crab and other mollusks. They eat by filter feeding phytoplankton out of the water column and are the best water filter we have in South Carolina. One oyster can filter about seven gallons of water per day! Oyster reefs also protect our islands and mainland by acting as a natural breakwater, absorbing wave energy that could potentially be harmful to our shores. months when the water temperature is greater than 68 degrees. Male and female oysters release reproductive material into the water column, creating free-swimming larvae called spat. This spat will be carried through our waterways by tides and currents looking for a hard substrate to attach itself to. The best thing for spat is to attach to another oyster shell, but they can also fasten on to wood, concrete or other forms of shells. Once the spat has found a suitable clutch, it will develop a full shell within 12-24 hours. Oyster populations are declining all along the Atlantic Coast. Overharvesting, water pollution, coastal development and wake from recreational boats all contribute to the decline of Eastern Oysters. Tens of thousands of bushels are harvested off the Atlantic coast each year, but fewer than 10% of the harvested shells are returned to our waterways. Without these shells being placed back into the water, the oyster spat are finding less clutch to grow on. South Carolina Oyster Restoration and Enhancement (SCORE) is a program by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) of South Carolina to increase our oyster population. Volunteers work together to plant clutch material in order to recruit more juvenile oysters. They have also established oyster recycling facilities, where both businesses and individuals can deposit used shells, to be placed back out into our waterways. hiltonhead.com

ovember is a great time to enjoy the outdoors with your family and friends. With Thanksgiving just around the corner — and relatives from all over the country flocking to Hilton Head Island like migratory birds — it could be helpful to have some plans and ideas in place to get everyone outside. First and foremost, it’s important to prepare any visitors for your adventuring plans with guidance on how to dress for a November escapade. The average temperatures in November here on the Island range between a low of 49 degrees and a high of 70 degrees.

Near the shore, you can spot American Oyster Catchers, Piping Plovers and Willets. Our resident bottlenose dolphin can be spied frolicking in local waterways. Plus, mussels and periwinkle snails can be seen in the high marsh. Biking is another fantastic fall option to get a group outside and exploring. Bike on the beach or take advantage of the miles of bike trails on the Island. Want to ramp up the fun? Take a guided E-bike tour of Hilton Head Island or Palmetto Bluff and enjoy the thrill of zipping from place to place on these electrical-assisted bikes. You can also gear up the group and head out for a hike. Fish Haul Beach Park at low tide is a real treat. You’ll discover all kinds of cool ocean critters wandering on the mud flats and see birds feeding in scores of tidal pools.

The key to having an awesome outdoor experience in cooler weather is to dress appropriately. Advise visiting family to bring layers to accommodate potential 20-degree temperature swings. Take into consideration that winter tends to be rather wet here on Hilton Head Island, so waterproof gear would be a smart addition to any suitcase.

Pinckney Island Wildlife Refuge is another great hiking choice. Be sure to bring water — and be aware there are no bathroom facilities on-site. However, these minor inconveniences are well worth the incredible beauty of the vast stretches of marsh and the bird life that festoons the freshwater lagoons.

If you’re planning on getting out on the water, remember that jackets, pants and shoes that are quick-dry and/or water-resistant are a better choice than clothes made out of natural fibers like cotton

The Town of Hilton Head Island provides nine public beach accesses: • Alder Lane Beach Access, off South Forest Beach Dr. • Coligny Beach Park, off Coligny Circle • Driessen Beach Park, end of Bradley Beach Rd. • Chaplin Community Park, off Wm. Hilton Pkwy. • Fish Haul Park & Mitchelville Freedom Park, end of Beach City Rd. • Burkes Beach Access, end of Burkes Beach Rd. • Folly Field Beach Park and Islanders Beach Park, both off Folly Field Rd.

Parking & Facilities:

There are 23 metered spaces at Alder Lane, 54 metered spaces at Folly Field and 13 metered spaces at Burkes Beach Road. The parking fee is a QUARTER for each 15 minutes. Additionally, there are 207 spaces at Driessen Beach Park for long-term parking. The fee is a QUARTER for each 15 minutes during the week. Parking spaces at Islanders Beach Park are ALWAYS reserved for annual beach passes. Parking at Driessen Beach Park for annual beach passes is reserved from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Parking is FREE at Fish Haul Park, Mitchelville Freedom Park and Coligny Beach Park. Handicap parking is available at no fee at all parks. Restrooms, changing areas, sand showers and vending machines are available.

nated for the Alder Lane, Coligny, Driessen, Folly Field and Islanders Beach Parks. The boundaries will be clearly marked on the beach and in the water. Lifeguards are stationed at these designated areas for assistance and beach information.

Beach Marker Signs:

Hilton Head’s beaches are marked near the dune line with signs to let emergency responders know where assistance is needed. They are also useful as a reference point if you or your group should become lost.

Beach Safety Tips:

• Apply and reapply plenty of sunscreen even on cloudy days. • Wear sunglasses to prevent damage from the sun. • Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water. • Be aware of the rules and regulations of the beach. Signs are posted near most beach accesses. • Don’t leave your kids unsupervised even in guarded areas. • Note the location of the nearest lifeguard and report any hazardous conditions to him or her. • Know the name of the beach or hotel/ condo and the beach marker number where you are staying if you should need assistance. • There are often jellyfish and stingrays, as well as other sea life in and out of the water, which may sting or cut a person. In any situation where first aid is needed, find a lifeguard or seek further medical attention. • Call or wave for help if you are in trouble. hiltonhead.com

• Don’t enter the water if you can’t swim. • Swim near a lifeguard. • Ask the lifeguard about any dangers in the water or on the beach, especially if he or she is flying a yellow caution flag. • Be aware of direction and strength of longshore currents. These currents can take you up and down the beach quickly and cause you or your kids to get lost. • Don’t let your kids swim unsupervised even in guarded areas. • Don’t swim alone. Use the buddy system so that someone always knows where you are so they can get help if needed. • Don’t overestimate your swimming ability. Stay in chest-deep or less water to insure you don’t get stuck in water over your head. • Don’t rely on flotation devices. • Swim parallel to shore if you want to swim long distances. • Don’t swim against the current. Swim across the current to escape the pull. • Always swim sober. • Don’t dive into unknown water or shallow breaking waves. Always go feet first.

The following are prohibited on all beaches: – Possession or consumption of alcohol – Glass (bottles, containers, etc.) – Littering – Indecent exposure or nudity – Disorderly conduct – Disturbing the peace – Unauthorized vehicles – Fires and fireworks – Shark fishing – Horseback riding or motorized driving – Removal, harming or harassment of any hiltonhead.com
