WELCOME TO

Hilton Head Island! ocean, wildlife, nightlife, fresh seafood, handcrafted wine and spirits and so much more! Here at Island Events, we are passionate about keeping visitors in tune with what’s happening on the Island. But we would not be able to do it without the help of our excellent team of columnists, who keep us in the know about all things Hilton Head, and who love writing about our awesome Island as much as we do! In this issue, Island Winery’s Georgene Mortimer discusses ideal wine and pizza pairings, veteran fisherman Capt. Miles Altman of Bay Runner Tours talks trout tricks, and Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy’s Doug Weaver gives us a glimpse of the green through his eyes.

elcome to Hilton Head Island! This incredibly unique Lowcountry destination is home to 12 miles of pristine beach, the nation’s very first self-governed freedman’s town and a cradle of Gullah (or Geechee) culture, miles and miles of nature trails for hiking or biking and an atmosphere that stays with you, calling those who have set foot here back again and again. Here, you will find zero buildings higher than the tallest tree and no neon at all, but rather a deep, institutionalized respect for the complex ecosystem that makes this Island so special. The array of activities you will find here on our boot-shaped barrier Island is almost as stunning as the scenery: live music and lively bars and restaurants; exciting water sports; dolphin, fishing and kayak tours; some of the world’s finest golf courses; plus sand,

So go forth and take advantage of every opportunity to gear up, wind down or just spend quality time with those you love. Whether you’re here for the Lowcountry cuisine, time at the beach with a beloved furry friend, for sport or nature or just a laid-back summer vacation vibe, Hilton Head has you covered. We’re so glad you came to visit, and all of us here at Island Events wish you the vacation of your dreams and the time of your life.

Delizioso!

A Case for Two of Italy’s Most Famous Exports — Together By Georgene Mortimer, Island Winery

young and fruity Chianti.

There’s nothing like a good wine when you’re craving it, and the same goes for pizza! And though these two aren’t paired as a rule, one can certainly enhance the other.

Chianti also has an American cousin! In the late 1800s, Italians immigrating to California brought cuttings of their Sangiovese grape with them. This version of Chianti, named for the grape, is fruitier and higher in alcohol, but also goes beautifully with the flavors in pizza. As with the Chianti, young and fruity is the way to go.

Meat Lover’s Pizza with California Zinfandel

While the origin of the Zinfandel grape is hotly contested in the wine world, there is no question that Italians brought this grape to California in the late 1800s, and we’re so glad they did. The California climate produces a wine that is dark in color, spicy and loaded with fruit. So, sip a Zin between bites of a fully loaded, protein-packed pizza and discover a new favorite pairing!

Deep-Dish Pizza and Barbera

Classic Cheese and Lambrusco

From the cool, northwestern Piedmont region of Italy, Barbera is another grape brought from Italy to California. It thrives in the Sierra Foothills region, is high in acidity and low in tannins. Light and refreshing, Barbera is packed with berry flavors and is the perfect complement to a thick, doughy pizza like a Chicago-style, a Deep Dish or a Sicilian.

Pizza Margherita and Chianti

Regardless of toppings, pizza typically requires a substantial wine, i.e., a red. But white wine lovers, I’ve not forgotten you! A crisp Pinot Grigio can be a lovely addition to pizza night, especially to pies loaded with fresh veggie toppings. A rule to go by: Italian wine and California wines with Italian grapes make for the very best wine-pizza pairings.

Luckily for us, Lambrusco survived the sweet wines craze of the 70s and 80s. Its age-old Italian pedigree could have something to do with it, or its wide range of expressions — from very sweet to dry. For the perfect cheesy pizza companion, try a Lambrusco on the semisweet or dry side. Bonus: it even has a light spritz of bubbles! Chianti is one of Italy’s most famous and celebrated wines, and a true Chianti can only come from that very region in the Tuscan hills, which produces wines from young and fruity to aged and complex. The Margherita-style pizza, traditionally made with fresh mozzarella, basil and tomatoes, pairs delightfully with a light, 14 Island Events October 2020

The Heritage Library A Place to Seek, Honor and Commune with Our Past By Dani Ray For such a small Island, Hilton Head figures into the birth and evolution of our nation in a big way. It was instrumental in pushing back the Spanish settlements creeping up from St. Augustine, grew the first crop of Sea Island cotton in the 1790s, fell to Union troops in 1861 and was instrumental in the blockage of Southern ports, sheltered hundreds of the formerly enslaved at Mitchelville during the Civil War and saw the last stand of a general locking horns with President Johnson to implement Lincoln’s plan for Reconstruction. But while the resort town of Hilton Head Island has been lavished with awards for years, it is not often thought of as a repository for historical records, yet it is. Hilton Head is home to the Heritage Library, a nonprofit organization that safeguards local and state history — old periodicals, letters and historical photographs, plantation ledgers, Freedmen depositions, smugglers’ records, research projects, some of the Lowcountry’s earliest maps and more. It also works to preserve historic sites like Fort Mitchel and Zion Chapel of Ease Cemetery. “Telling the Island's story is what we do best,” says Executive Director Barbara Catenaci. This fall, for example, the library will offer an array of explorations of the past, with virtual classes like “Early Families of Hilton Head Island,” “The Institution of Slavery, Part 1: The Beginning Through the Triangular Trade,” “Shepherd of the Sable Multitude: General Rufus Saxton” and, of course, its genealogy classes. Heritage Library avidly promotes the personal and professional study of genealogy by guiding participants in starting a family tree, navigating the technical aspects and weaving a narrative from the clues our ancestors left behind. COVID-19 has required a number of changes, such as wearing masks at all indoor and outdoor library events, practicing social distancing, enhancing cleaning protocols, limiting the number of people inside the library at 16 Island Events October 2020

one time and offering appointments. But Heritage Library is deeply committed to their community outreach, and it has lost no time in growing its virtual footprint. Says Catenaci, “We are making use of online classes and programs, providing ancestry research tips and tricks via Facebook and will be adding virtual tours of our sites soon.” Just in the past couple of months, participants from 18 different states took virtual DNA and Family Tree Maker classes! And though this year's Historic Holidays on Hilton Head Island will be a virtual event, it will be brimming with Lowcountry and Sea Island holiday traditions, this time beamed directly into your homes. “Keep checking our website and Facebook page,” Catenaci says, “as we are constantly adding new resources and information!” Piecing together the past can be tricky, but the library’s employees, champions and many talented volunteers work hard to bring the history of the Lowcountry into focus through the lens of the present. Their passion for its mission leaves no doubt as to why USA Today named Heritage Library one of the “10 Great Places to Trace Your Family Roots.” The library charges a modest daily fee and affordable annual membership options, which provide patrons access to a number of major ancestry and heritage databases. It is open Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Call today to make an appointment to come see us! WHAT to KNOW

on sland I d a e ilton H

Alcohol:

Drinking/possession of alcohol on Hilton Head's public beaches is illegal and could result in a fine of up to $500. Liquor stores are not open on Sundays in South Carolina, though you can buy wine and beer in some gas stations and supermarkets.

Roundabouts:

You might as well learn to love South Carolina’s roundabouts. They’re everywhere! There are just a few rules to follow in the two-lane roundabout: • The drivers already in the roundabout have the right of way. • Always yield to them before entering the roundabout. • A roundabout is like any other flowing traffic — don’t stop in the middle. • As annoying as it can be to get behind a big slow vehicle, it’s even worse to be stuck beside it in a roundabout. Just wait. • Like with intersections, don’t change lanes while in the roundabout.

Beaches:

There are a few rules we all need to keep in mind to ensure a safe experience for everyone who comes to Hilton Head. It is therefore very important to remember that there is: • No sleeping on the beach between midnight and 6 a.m. • No driving on the beach • No horses on the beach • No fires on the beach • No fireworks on the beach (you need a permit to set off fireworks anywhere on Hilton Head, and an offense will result in a misdemeanor and a $500 fine) • No pets on the beach between 10 a.m.5 p.m. the Friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day

HOROSCOPE October 2020 ARIES Time away from the fray may have weakened your social armor. But you’re not alone. Just remember that warmth, optimism and compassion are always in en vogue! TAURUS The average American household has 300,000 items in it. As a thought exercise, ask yourself: which are the 15-20 things you value most? What do you really need? What’s the rest of it? GEMINI Having someone question your reality can send you reeling. But lately, you yourself have been secondguessing your intuition. Why? Your subconscious is busy processing information you can’t even fathom. Don’t discount its ability to read the room. CANCER It’s hard to imagine America without apple pie or Italy without pizza, but apples originated in Asia and tomatoes reportedly didn’t arrive in Europe until the 16th century. An upcoming change has you spooked. Can you embrace it to become an even better you? LEO Because of how things were left, there is someone you are afraid to contact. This month, reach out anyway. What’s the worst that could happen? Maybe they aren’t ready to talk to you, or they are, and you can finally let go of your angst about it. VIRGO Another birthday has you thinking critically about your life. Give yourself a grade for the following question: Am I giving my body everything it needs to operate optimally? You are especially off on your sleep routine, even though you know it can wreak havoc. This month, get thee to bed on time and reap all the wonderful benefits! 26 Island Events October 2020

LIBRA You never know when or where inspiration will strike. Sometimes even the most brilliant projects start with a single thought. This month, make a little extra time for rumination. Be sure to take notes! SCORPIO Cleopatra lived closer to the invention of the cell phone than to the building of the Great Pyramid at Giza. And suddenly, your perception of her will never be quite the same! To round out your perspective on what’s been troubling you, get more information. SAGITTARIUS A whiff of nutmeg recalls custards, eggnog and curry. But 2-3 teaspoons of raw nutmeg is toxic. We know that moderation is key — where in your life is there room to transition from extreme to moderate? This month, seek it out! CAPRICORN You long for a great adventure, but what if this is your adventure? This month, work to integrate your reality with a wish dear to your heart. First, zoom in on what you feel is missing. Then, consider what might set you on a path you’ve always wanted to tread. AQUARIUS Children ask an average of 300 questions per day. Are you asking enough questions? Are you tuned in to the answers? The people in your life need your undivided attention sometimes. Give the gift of your time this month. Bonus: you will really enjoy it! PISCES The original Superman was not meant to fly, but because animating him in flight was much simpler than drawing his leaps and bounds, he took to the skies! This month, refashion an impediment into an asset. Try it out with an issue you deal with daily. hiltonhead.com

nated for the Alder Lane, Coligny, Driessen, Folly Field and Islanders Beach Parks. The boundaries will be clearly marked on the beach and in the water. Lifeguards are stationed at these designated areas for assistance and beach information.

Beach Marker Signs:

Hilton Head’s beaches are marked near the dune line with signs to let emergency responders know where assistance is needed. They are also useful as a reference point if you or your group should become lost.

Beach Safety Tips: • Apply and reapply plenty of sunscreen even on cloudy days. • Wear sunglasses to prevent damage from the sun. • Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water. • Be aware of the rules and regulations of the beach. Signs are posted near most beach accesses. • Don’t leave your kids unsupervised even in guarded areas. • Note the location of the nearest lifeguard and report any hazardous conditions to him or her. • Know the name of the beach or hotel/ condo and the beach marker number where you are staying if you should need assistance. • There are often jellyfish and stingrays, as well as other sea life in and out of the water, which may sting or cut a person. In any situation where first aid is needed, find a lifeguard or seek further medical attention. • Call or wave for help if you are in trouble. hiltonhead.com

Water Safety Tips: • Don’t enter the water if you can’t swim. • Swim near a lifeguard. • Ask the lifeguard about any dangers in the water or on the beach, especially if he or she is flying a yellow caution flag. • Be aware of direction and strength of longshore currents. These currents can take you up and down the beach quickly and cause you or your kids to get lost. • Don’t let your kids swim unsupervised even in guarded areas. • Don’t swim alone. Use the buddy system so that someone always knows where you are so they can get help if needed. • Don’t overestimate your swimming ability. Stay in chest-deep or less water to insure you don’t get stuck in water over your head. • Don’t rely on flotation devices. • Swim parallel to shore if you want to swim long distances. • Don’t swim against the current. Swim across the current to escape the pull. • Always swim sober. • Don’t dive into unknown water or shallow breaking waves. Always go feet first.

Beach Prohibitions: The following are prohibited on all beaches: – Possession or consumption of alcohol – Glass (bottles, containers, etc.) – Littering – Indecent exposure or nudity – Disorderly conduct – Disturbing the peace – Unauthorized vehicles – Fires and fireworks – Shark fishing – Horseback riding or motorized driving – Removal, harming or harassment of any hiltonhead.com

HILTON HEAD HISTORY

Hilton Head Island has a long and rich history of visitors. Thousands of Years Ago Native Americans came to hunt and fish.

1520s Conquistadors explored the area.

1663 Captain William Hilton sailed the British ship Adventure north from Barbados, scouting lands to grow sugar cane for the crown. Approaching the island by way of Port Royal Sound, he encountered a sliver of land and called it “Hilton’s Headland.”

17th, 18th & 19th Centuries For many years, few permanent residents made their home on Hilton Head Island. Though the humid, subtropical climate was ideal for growing agricultural crops like cotton and rice, fear of disease and isolation kept antebellum plantation owners on the mainland. Africans worked the plantations, and their unique blend of African and European traditions gave birth to the Gullah culture, which survives even today. 30 Island Events October 2020

1861-1865 The Civil War brought big changes to Hilton Head Island. At the onset of the conflict, the South erected Fort Walker to protect the port. When the fort fell, tens of thousands of Union troops, prisoners, missionaries, shopkeepers and enslaved men and women seeking asylum flooded the Island. Suddenly humming with activity, Hilton Head became instrumental in the North’s blockade of nearby Southern ports. In 1863, the town of Mitchelville became the first self-governed town for freed men and women.

Post Civil War - 1956 After the Civil War, the Island's population dropped to around 3,000, and by 1940, it had fallen to just over 1,000. Electricity finally came to the Island in 1950 and, six years later, Hilton Head’s very first bridge to the mainland made the area significantly more accessible.

Late 1950s Developer and environmentalist Charles E. Fraser began work on the Island’s first resort, which he called Sea Pines. Fraser is sometimes called the father of the modern resort, and his vision for the Island was progressive, even by modern standards. His determination that no building be “higher than the tallest tree,” as well as his rejection of flashy neon signs, became central to the Island’s distinctive character.

Today Fraser’s legacy lives on in Hilton Head Island’s balance of commerce with green spaces, golf courses with wild places and thoroughfares with biking trails. Recently voted the Best Island in the U.S. by Travel and Leisure readers for the third time, this family-friendly Sea Island seamlessly combines luxury, adventure and charm – all in one unforgettable destination. hiltonhead.com

RECREATIONAL PATHWAYS GUIDE The Town of Hilton Head Island provides nearly 60 miles of public pathways and nature trails for the enjoyment of pedestrians and cyclists.

RULES FOR THE ROAD: • Please obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws. • Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users. • Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles. • Please do not ride on roads when a pathway is available. • Please ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists. • WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you. • Please yield to pedestrians. When resting or stopped, please move off the pathway.

• Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flashlight. Bicycles must have a red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night. • When approaching slower pathway users from behind, please sound your warning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left. • Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under. • Make eye contact and use hand signals. Assume other bicyclists and motorists don’t see you. Hand signals tell motorists and other path users what you intend to do and will ensure everyone’s safe enjoyment of the paths. Be courteous, alert and predictable.

ust a couple hundred yards from the sheltered bend in Broad Creek, Kayak Hilton Head’s paddlers glide quietly through the saltwater estuary that runs through the center of the Island. Away from the open ocean, rough water and strong tides, this is where dolphins feast on fish and shrimp and then celebrate by playing! The kayakers drift slowly as their guide points out “Nick,” “Blackbeard,” “Big Bob,” “Ziggy” and “Stripes,” who are completely unbothered by their audience. Says founder and tour operator Dave Kerns, “We get some really cool experiences out there paddling with the dolphins. We also still see an occasional manatee into the fall months, a random otter as the weather cools and lots of great birdlife: pink Spoonbills, wood storks, egrets, herons, a few bald eagles and many, many more!” Indeed, Hilton Head is teeming with wonderful wildlife, and kayakers will learn about the Island’s intracoastal waterways and ecosystems, secrets of the salt marsh, local history and legend and even insider tips on where to get the best seafood! “Our ultimate goal,” says Kerns, “is to give our kayakers a leisurely, fun and educational experience.” With a TripAdvisor “Certificate of Excellence” for each of the last 7 years, it seems they are doing just that. Tour-goers from beginner to expert report safe, comfortable and easy-to-paddle kayaks; knowledgeable and professional guides and a desire to repeat the experience! Kerns cred-

its his “very solid” management team, which oversees its top-notch personnel and well-maintained equipment. But his favorite part about it? “Definitely trading in the suit, tie and cubicle for life and work in the outdoors.” In the fall, which Kerns calls “the best time to be in Hilton Head,” kayak tours depart around 9 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. and last about two hours. Both single and double kayaks are available and visitors can choose between recreational family kayaking and nature dolphin tours. Kayak Hilton Head also runs multiple boats — both shared and private — all day everyday, plus sunset, beachcombing and fishing tours, in partnership with Guaranteed Dolphin Boat Tours. Also, don’t be surprised if Kerns’ Goldendoodle, Mango, makes an appearance on a tour! Though kayaking is naturally socially distanced, Kayak Hilton Head has implemented a number of measures to keep employees and visitors safe. Employees wear masks off the water, equipment is disinfected after each use and check-in is entirely outside. All tours and rentals require reservations, so call us today to book your spot. ” K S C I T R “TROUT and Other Musings Fishing for Speckled Trout in the Lowcountry By Captain Miles Altman, Bay Runner Fishing Charters The fluorescent orange cork landed with a splash on the edge of the green spartina grass and promptly disappeared. With a few turns on the Penn Battle spinning reel, Bo had the slack out of the line and the Legion rod bowed against the surge. The reel's drag purred as the fish took about twenty yards of line upstream and then surfaced, boiling the water in protest. “Ooh he’s mad!” I remarked, just as it took off for another run, this time for deep water. Actually, it was a female — four pounds or so, and bigger than the typical male, this one was full of roe. Speckled trout are one of the most highly prized game fish here in the Lowcountry. Their streamlined, silver iridescence with spots is reminiscent of the freshwater trout family, but this shimmering beauty belies their power. Armed with a pair of fangs at the top of their mouths and the aggression of a barracuda, there is nothing delicate about the bone-jarring strike of the trout or the determined battle that occurs after 46 Island Events October 2020

hookup. The only delicate thing about this fish (other than its tasty flesh) is its mouth, which makes a light drag mandatory. And while some prefer to fish live bait under corks, trout are caught on many types of artificial lures. One that I have added to my arsenal is the "Trout Trick,” a soft, plastic bait invented by the seasoned Capt. Bob Sanders, who fishes out of Edisto.

Thanks to last year’s mild winter, the trout have been plentiful, and the cooler temperatures of October hold promise of a great season. By now, the numerous "peanuts" caught earlier this summer will have been stuffing themselves on the plentiful shrimp and have gained size. As for Bo, he and his party caught many more trout that day, four of which had “gator” status (four pounds or better). Clear, cooler water and this great fall weather are bound to add up to some epic speck fishing in the coming months! Capt. Miles Altman of Bayrunner Fishing Charters has nearly 50 years experience fishing the waters surrounding Hilton Head Island. What I I See on the Green

t’s hard to express the joy that teaching golf brings me. This is in part because of my own love for the game, but I think it’s also because it brings so much joy to others. I often wish people could see what I see on a daily basis as a golf instructor, so this month I’m going to tell you.

Golf Through the Eyes of Doug Weaver By Doug Weaver, Director of Instruction, Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy

I see a beginner — initially frustrated by the many, many things that they must learn. But they keep coming back because golf digs into you that way. And over time, as a love for the game blossoms, I see growth and determination, a player overcoming each challenge. I also see the birth of a sportsman or sportswoman, on their way to becoming a mature golfer who is reaching — stretching themselves — toward their potential. I see children reveling in a game that keeps them outside, moving and thinking. They are learning to play by the rules, developing patience and enjoying the encouragement from parents, friends and instructors. They are seeing not just the way the game is played, but the way players treat each other. They begin to understand that they too will need to demonstrate accountability and responsibility in the care of their equipment. A very young child — only three! — amazes his parents with what he is able to do with the guidance of an excellent coach. I see a young couple deepening their bond, as they watch each other handle the challenges of the game; two boys playing against the backdrop of a windswept shore; a group emulating their hero in Ricky Fowler orange and women playing so impressively that crowds watch in awe at their show of skill and determination. I see a recently retired couple taking on a new game, and getting closer as they tackle it together. It’s a social game, a game of movement and grace, and it requires every part of the brain. They grow together in their endeavor, encourage each other and leave hand-in-hand, looking forward to their next opportunity to step up to the tee. For me, this is the power of the game of golf. Come see us, and discover the golfer in you. On Mondays at 4 p.m., we are now putting on a Free Clinic and Exhibition. You’re all invited! Doug Weaver, Local Golf Hall of Famer and Director of Instruction, Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy. www.palmettodunes.com.

Hilton Head O F N I R Island INSIDE NEVER feed the alligators

Death, serious injury and jail time are just a few of the reasons we don't feed the alligators. Alligators become aggressive when they think food is coming. Feeding an alligator once from a distance can ruin it for someone else.

Offshore shark fishing ONLY

Of course we don't want to attract sharks to swimming areas. The law prohibits baiting or fishing for shark from the beach and 400 yards or fewer from any shore. There is also no fishing in swimming areas or from the beaches anytime during daylight hours between April and September.

DON’T mess with the natives

The law protects beach-dwelling sea creatures. Hurting, bothering or even picking up the live ones could result in a fine of $500. This includes sand dollars, conch shells and especially turtles!

Speaking of sea turtles, here's what you need to know: NEVER INTERFERE with a sea turtle

The endangered loggerhead turtles lay their eggs in nests on HHI's beaches. It's important that tourists and locals alike do their best to keep their impact minimal. Don't get close to them, shine lights on them, touch them or their eggs, feed them or get anywhere near their nests. You could face up to a $15,000 fine and even jail time!

NO LIGHTS on or near the beach

Nighttime on the beach is a crucial time for baby turtles and any lights that can be seen from the beach can be fatal to these little guys. When they hatch, they must head directly to the ocean or die. Artificial lights (even flashlights or the flash from a camera!) confuse them, and can cause them to head in the opposite direction. Nesting season is between May and the end of October. If any of your houselights can be seen from the beach, they need to be off or invisible from the beach by 10 p.m. during this time. 50 Island Events October 2020

If you see something that looks amiss, CALL THE EXPERTS! If a sea turtle is injured or dead, or you see a nest that has clearly been tampered with or someone is actively bothering a nest or a turtle, call the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources at (800) 922-5431.

LEAVE the beach the way you found it

So your sandcastle is your masterpiece. Understood. But this is literally life or death for these turtles. An obstacle on the beach can cause a mama sea turtle to go back to the ocean instead of laying her eggs. Anything left on the beach that doesn't belong there can cause problems for both mama and baby turtles, so grab every last piece of your gear and trash and fill and smooth any holes you've made. hiltonhead.com
