Y A HISTOR

ometimes, as a guy who designs and builds magic for Penn & Teller and David Copperfield, being hunted by the FBI is just another day at the office. Kerry Pollock laughs. “Somebody reported the equipment I was carrying. They cordoned off two city blocks looking for me!”

S

Okay, so there was never really an office. In his 35 years in the business, Pollock traveled a lot. He would leave Ohio each fall to play casino showrooms, corporate events, resorts and comedy clubs in the Caribbean, Vegas and Hawaii. “I enjoyed my time on the road, paying my dues. I learned a lot and met a ton of people from all over. Also, I think I just wanted to get warm!” And yet, he says, he always dreamed of opening his own club. His vision was crystal clear: a cozy little cabaret, less of a standard comedy club and more like one of the smaller, full-service Vegas showrooms. The two to two-and-a-half-hour variety show would be 80% stand up, 20% original magic with plenty of room for audience participation. He would invite the world-class magicians and comedians he’d met to be guest acts, and he would anchor the rest. The club would host holiday parties, weddings, business meetings and be set up to record TV-quality productions of any event. Pollock has an engineering background and loves to work with his hands so he would design and build all the systems himself — lighting, props, magic, music. Comedy Magic Cabaret was ready for the physical realm. But where to build it? On his many trips to Hilton Head, Pollock had noticed that comedy clubs just weren’t sticking. “Comics can be pretty offensive,” he concedes. “There’s only a small percentage that work clean.” Luckily, he’s one of them. “One of the best compliments ever was four generations of one family laughing their heads off at my show. Even the teenagers loved it!” For a comic whose motto is “funny, not filthy,” balmy and family-friendly Hilton Head was the perfect fit. Eight years later, Comedy Magic Cabaret is near14 Island Events October 2021

ing 1,000 Excellent reviews on TripAdvisor. Reviewers give top marks to the “delightful hostess” (Pollock’s lovely wife, Kelly), the awesome staff and the “delicious” offerings. The consensus? “A trip highlight — we laughed all night!” Next up? Close-up magic experiences backstage at the club and on Pollock’s 61-foot motor yacht. Intrigued? Head to comedymagiccabaret.com for all the latest showtimes, the original comedy game show “Bonk” and to find out what else Pollock has up his sleeve! Comedy Magic Cabaret 843 William Hilton Pkwy. HILTON HEAD HISTORY

Hilton Head Island has a long and rich history of visitors. Thousands of Years Ago

Native Americans came to hunt and fish.

1663

Captain William Hilton sailed the British ship Adventure north from Barbados, scouting lands to grow sugar cane for the crown. Approaching the Island by way of Port Royal Sound, he encountered a sliver of land and called it “Hilton’s Headland.”

1861-1865

The Civil War brought big changes to Hilton Head Island. At the onset of the conflict, the South erected Fort Walker to protect the port. When the fort fell, tens of thousands of Union troops, prisoners, missionaries, shopkeepers and enslaved men and women seeking asylum flooded the Island. Suddenly humming with activity, Hilton Head became instrumental in the North’s blockade of nearby Southern ports. In 1863, the town of Mitchelville became the first self-governed town for freed men and women.

Late 1950s

Developer and environmentalist Charles E. Fraser began work on the Island’s first resort, which he called Sea Pines. Fraser is sometimes called the father of the modern resort, and his vision for the Island was progressive, even by modern standards. His determination that no building be “higher than the tallest tree,” as well as his rejection of flashy neon signs, became central to the Island’s distinctive character. 16 Island Events October 2021

1520s

Conquistadors explored the area.

17th, 18th & 19th Centuries

For many years, few permanent residents made their home on Hilton Head Island. Though the humid, subtropical climate was ideal for growing agricultural crops like cotton and rice, fear of disease and isolation kept antebellum plantation owners on the mainland. Africans worked the plantations, and their unique blend of African and European traditions gave birth to the Gullah culture, which survives even today.

Post Civil War - 1956

After the Civil War, the Island’s population dropped to around 3,000, and by 1940, it had fallen to just over 1,000. Electricity finally came to the Island in 1950 and, six years later, Hilton Head’s very first bridge to the mainland made the area significantly more accessible.

Today

Fraser’s legacy lives on in Hilton Head Island’s balance of commerce with green spaces, golf courses with wild places and thoroughfares with biking trails. Recently voted the Best Island in the U.S. by Travel and Leisure readers for the third time, this family-friendly sea island seamlessly combines luxury, adventure and charm – all in one unforgettable destination. hiltonhead.com

HOROSCOPE ARIES

Your relationship with food is weighing you down. This month, challenge yourself to rethink your food paradigm, starting with this simple idea: eat to fuel your body rather than to curb hunger. Letting this idea sink in will result in amazing changes.

TAURUS

This month, you may be tempted to spend much of your time with one particular person who needs you. Watch that you don’t overdo it! Also, don’t forget about the handful of projects you’ve been promising to get to. Now is a good time to start.

GEMINI

You’ve been shying away from confrontation of late, Gemini ut not all on i t has to be painful. There is still a place for respectful, diplomatic debate, and it can be super healthy for relationships at home, at work or elsewhere!

CANCER There’s nothing like someone from the past to make you revisit how you perceive the present. This month, be on the lookout for lessons coming from an old friend. This person has more to tell you about yourself than you may think. LEO Who are your teammates in life? When they miss a play, how do you react? This month, evaluate the inner workings of your teams and consider: how often do you expect people to have your back? How often are you there for the assist? Think on it. VIRGO

It’s time to designate a day of rest, Virgo, even if you can only start with a half day. Admit it, you could work a little smarter and harder on the other days and make this happen The ene ts of some “alone” time on your own terms are endless. 24 Island Events October 2021

OCTOBER 2021 LIBRA

Sometimes, crushes can help us get through long work days, rehearsals or dreary tasks. If you’ve got one in progress, that’s okay, ut he hat s ompellin ou to irt until you’re sure no one is going to be hurt by this exciting connection.

SCORPIO

You’ve been struggling lately with the sense that life isn’t fair. We know this, and yet we feel entitled to fairness in our daily lives. Rather than focusing on what you can’t control, work to make things more fair for those within your circle of influence.

SAGITTARIUS

Your talents go beyond what you’re currently doing, and it drives you a little crazy that you don’t get many opportunities to show the world just what you can do. In order to prove yourself in the right department, you may want to take on some side projects. Don’t be afraid! This is an excellent way to break out of the rut you’re in.

CAPRICORN

You’re not getting out enough, Capricorn! Heart health, vitamin D and the soothing effects of nature are all excellent reasons to get away from home. Snuggle those feet into the grass, get moving, or watch the sky change. Don’t engage with tech.

AQUARIUS

Consider the people you admire most. Can they accept a compliment? Yes, they can. You can too. Ignore the voice in your head formulatin some e use or uali cation or self-deprecating remark, smile and say thank you. Done!

PISCES You’ve never been a pro at saying no but as things are starting to pile up, you may want to start. Those asking for your time would hate to think that you’re a mess because you said yes to them. Start with the low stakes stuff and work your way up. hiltonhead.com

WHAT TO KNOW On Hilton Head Island

Alcohol:

Drinking/possession of alcohol on Hilton Head's public beaches is illegal and could result in a fine of up to $500. Liquor stores are not open on Sundays in South Carolina, though you can buy wine and beer in some gas stations and supermarkets.

Roundabouts:

You might as well learn to love South Carolina’s roundabouts. They're everywhere! There are just a few rules to follow in the two-lane roundabout: • The drivers already in the roundabout have the right of way. • Always yield to them before entering the roundabout. • A roundabout is like any other flowing traffic— don't stop in the middle. • As annoying as it can be to get behind a big slow vehicle, it's even worse to be stuck beside it in a roundabout. Just wait. • Like with intersections, don't change lanes while in the roundabout.

Beaches:

There are a few rules we all need to keep in mind to ensure a safe experience for everyone who comes to Hilton Head. It is therefore very important to remember that there is: • No sleeping on the beach between midnight and 6 a.m. • No driving on the beach • No horses on the beach • No fires on the beach • No fireworks on the beach (you need a permit to set off fireworks anywhere on Hilton Head, and an offense will result in a misdemeanor and a $500 fine) • No pets on the beach between 10 a.m.5 p.m. the Friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day

RECREATIONAL PATHWAYS GUIDE

The Town of Hilton Head Island provides nearly 60 miles of public pathways and nature trails for the enjoyment of pedestrians and cyclists.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ON THE PATHS: • Obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws. • Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users. • Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles. • Do not ride on roads when a pathway is available. • Ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists.

please move off the pathway. • Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flashlight. Bicycles must have a red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night. • When approaching slower pathway users from behind, please sound your warning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left. • Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under.

• WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you.

• Make eye contact and use hand signals. Assume other bicyclists and motorists don’t see you. Hand signals tell motorists and other path users what you intend to do and will ensure everyone’s safety on the paths.

• Yield to pedestrians. When resting or stopped,

• Be courteous, alert and predictable.

32 Island Events October 2021

• WHITE DIAMONDS INDICATE RESTRICTED TRAVEL LANE: Travel with the flow of traffic. • WHITE STRIPE & STOP SIGN INDICATE ROAD CROSSING: Stop and look for motorists. • YELLOW CENTER LINE INDICATES TWO-WAY TRAFFIC: Keep to the right. • SEVERAL WHITE DIAGONAL STRIPES INDICATE A CROSSWALK: Watch out for other bicyclists, pedestrians and motorists. • At low tide, the Island’s 12 miles of beaches are ideal for biking. Public beaches are indicated on the Island Events map. • Our map also shows the existing public pathways. Many kiosks are located along the pathways with an Island-wide map on one side and a localized map of the area on the other. hiltonhead.com

hough he’d spent much of his life on boats with his dad, Mark Maurer didn’t always know he would be a captain. “I’m actually a third-generation clarinet player,” he says. “My grandfather played in a mounted cavalry band in WWI.” Maurer’s love of music led him to major in Music Composition at Florida State University, where he met his wife, Lori. He grins. “I was playing electric bass in the university’s jazz band and she was the featured vocalist.” The duo arrived in Hilton Head when Captain Mark was just 23 (he recently turned 65), still focused on music. But when the opportunity to open Shelter Cove’s first cruise company came his way, it seemed like an obvious move to pursue the other family business — boats. Now, nearly four decades later, Captain Mark’s Dolphin Cruises is a Hilton Head institution. “I think everyone on the Island knows me!” he says with a laugh. Capt. Mark is sure he’s got a lot more cruising in him, but he does intend to pass the torch one day and he’s delighted that his daughter, Krista, has returned to help him run the family business. Like her dad, she was on and around boats from a very young age. With her background in corporate marketing, she’ll take over the communications and advertising for now as she gets her captain’s license. “I love Hilton Head and I love 40 Island Events October 2021

our family business,” she enthuses. “Forty years in business is no small feat and we look forward to 40 more!” Capt. Mark estimates that he’s been at the helm for about 20,000 cruises since November of 1982, when he started out. If we’re going by Malcom Gladwell’s calculation — that 10,000 hours is required for true mastery of something — then Capt. Mark has this down. Even so, he says, he’s still excited to get up and go to work every morning. “I love the outdoors. The skies are just a little bit different every day and I never get tired of spotting dolphins. Plus, I get to talk to interesting people from all over the world and I don’t have to wear a tie. It’s pretty magical.” Capt. Mark’s passengers tend to agree, with these top-notch tours earning more than 200 Excellent reviews on TripAdvisor plus the Traveler’s Choice badge for 2021. Reviewers give high marks to this “very family-friendly” experience aboard a “sparkling clean” and “well-maintained” craft with the “warm and knowledgeable” Captain. If you’re considering cruising Hilton Head’s waterways with the perennially popular Capt. Mark, don’t wait. Catch him while you can! ative to the Island, alligators are often seen here, but they can be elusive during the heat of summer and the cold of winter. Alligators will go into a semihibernation period during the coldest months of the year, only emerging on the sporadic warm days we receive due to Hilton Head Island’s temperate climate. When this happens, they spread out on the banks of lagoons, soaking up the sun’s warmth.

An iconic image of the Lowcountry, the American Alligator is the main attraction on the H2O Alligator and Nature Tour. The Sea Pines Forest Preserve is a wonderful place to observe these animals in their natural environment. Depending on the season, these reptiles can be seen basking in the sun or cooling their body temperature in one of Sea Pines Forest Preserve’s five lakes. Alligators are ectothermic (cold-blooded), so heat plays a major role in their bodily functions. Digestion and anabolic activity are all reliant on their ability to absorb and maintain body heat. If the animal has absorbed too much heat in the middle of summer, they will dive to the bottom of the lakes, burrow into the mud and slow their heart rate, as to not burn up the oxygen in their system. Alligators can stay submerged for long periods of time, and some have been known to stay underwater for over an hour. An apex predator, the alligator’s diet consists of fish, birds and turtles. However, they are 42 Island Events October 2021

scavengers and will eat anything they can find, even something dead and decaying! Because alligators have high levels of stomach acid, they can eat food that other animals, such as humans, find fouled or contaminated. This extraordinary adaptation is a critical aspect of survival for these creatures. Like other reptiles, alligators do not have to eat as much as warm-blooded animals and, depending on their environment’s temperature, can go long periods without eating. However, they are also capable of taking down large animals of prey. Visitors or people unfamiliar with the alligator species should proceed with caution because they can be very dangerous to humans. The American Alligator is a precious natural resource that at one time was considered rare and endangered. Due to conservation efforts and education of the humans who share the same ecosystem and environment, alligators have experienced a rise in numbers and are no longer considered threatened. They are a resource worth protecting, and humans should work in harmony with the alligators to ensure their survival for generations to come. H2O Sports in Harbour Town is a great place to spark curiosity and inspire learning through adventure in all ages. AMERICAN

Oystercatcher By Jessie Renew, Outside Hilton Head

A

s summer winds to a close and cooler temperatures move in, the wild Lowcountry begins its transition into the roosting season. The visible spartina grass dies off, leaving the dense root system alive, ready to spring into action next year. The millions of organisms suspended in the water either die off or mature, leaving the salty waterways much clearer than in the fertile summer. For our local birdlife, it is a time of movement and change as well, with each species taking a different approach to over wintering. The American Oystercatcher species is one of individualism, with each bird choosing its own way to spend the winter. The American Oystercatcher is a very easy bird to identify. It is the largest species of wading bird, usually found hanging around with the diminutive Ruddy Turnstone, Plovers and Willets. Its body is black on top and white underneath, with an eye-catching contrast of colors on its wings. But its most noticeable feature is its large and pointed, bright orange-red beak. The oystercatcher also has noticeable orange eyes, which, like its beak, contrast with its black head. Oystercatchers are probing shore birds, and prey on bivalves and worms. At low tide, they survey oyster beds looking for partially opened shells. In one swift movement they jam their impressive beak into the shell and disable the muscle that closes the shell. They then enjoy the gooey insides of the animal. This technique requires some skill, and if they don’t manage to disable the muscle in time, the oyster can close on the beak and hold the bird captive. Incoming tides can then drown the trapped bird. Here in the Lowcountry, our large tidal swings are ideal for oystercatchers to hunt. Territory is the number one behavioral concern for the oystercatcher. They usually begin to breed at four years old, but start to stake out their breeding territory a year prior. Upon

reaching sexual maturity, they find a mate and stake their claim on a particular territory – usually a beach, sandbar or shell bank close to an oyster bed. When spring comes the pair create several potential nest sites, which are shallow depressions in the ground. Together they choose the most appropriate site and pad it with organic matter. The female lays up to four speckled eggs and both parents incubate the eggs for about 39 days. Once hatched, the parents use the proximate oyster bed to provide food for the young. While adult oystercatchers have virtually no predators, eggs and juveniles are exposed to a number of dangers. Their ground nests are susceptible to being washed away, driven over or stepped on by animals and humans. Foxes, raccoons and cats target the young birds. Those that survive the first summer travel with one of their parents to roosting grounds in the fall. The oystercatchers that breed in our local waterways do not travel far for winter. They usually go slightly further inland and live in denser groups. However, those oystercatchers that live north of South Carolina migrate south each fall. They do not generally migrate in groups; rather each bird chooses their own path, with family groups and couples often parting ways. The main roosting areas for oystercatchers are located at the Cape Romaine Seashore near Charleston and our own Skull Creek Intracoastal Waterway. There are approximately 11,000 oystercatchers left on the Atlantic Coast of the United States and they are threatened by loss of habitat through coastal development, pollution, disturbance, predation and climate change. Seeing the mating pairs or roosting groups is a fantastic treat. Get Outside this October and you may see our local oystercatchers or visiting “snow birds.” For more than 30 years, Outside Hilton Head has provided personalized adventures for all ages, from kayak, fishing, nature and dolphin tours to kids’ camps, history excursions, family outings and standup paddleboarding. THE

HUNT FOR

REDS IN

OCTOBER Reeling in Big Reds from Lowcountry Waters

Article and photos by Miles Altman, Bayrunner Fishing Charters

T

wenty-five feet below the surface, a marauding school of bull reds sweeps the sandy bottom in search of prey and hones in on the smell of fresh-cut mullet. One large bull inhales the chunk, feels the bite of the 8/0 circle hook and kicks his broad back and powerful tail into high gear. Twenty-five feet above sits the Phantom, where the rod bucks and then bends double as the reel drag starts singing that song all anglers love to hear — the sound of a line disappearing fast off the spool. In this situation, I fish a fairly tight drag and use medium-heavy spinning rods with 40-pound braid (letting the battle wear on with the lighter stuff increases recovery time and the mortality of the release fish). Multiple hookups are fairly common, too, often creating chaos on board as anglers strive to keep these strong fish from tangling. Known by many names including spottail bass, redfish (smaller ones) and bull reds 52 Island Events October 2021

(bigger ones), red drum offer some of the Lowcountry’s best sport fishing, whether anglers are boaters or land bound. Years of tight restrictions on bag limits and increased mariculture efforts by the state have resulted in the impressive comeback of the red drum in Lowcountry waters. Now, an occasional bull can be caught anytime of year — and the smaller ones are here year-round, too — but spring and fall is when they really come out to play. In April and in September/October, it’s not uncommon to catch double-digit numbers of 20- to 40-pounders. It’s always an adventure fishing the big bull reds. Luckily for us, the time is now! Capt. Miles Altman of Bayrunner Fishing Charters has more than 42 years of experience fishing the waters surrounding Hilton Head Island. Don’t miss the Finatic boat, which accommodates up to 12 passengers and features a special 3-hour shark/dolphin eco-tour. Contact Capt. 56 Island Events October 2021

nated for the Alder Lane, Coligny, Driessen, Folly Field and Islanders Beach Parks. The boundaries will be clearly marked on the beach and in the water. Lifeguards are stationed at these designated areas for assistance and beach information.

Beach Marker Signs:

Hilton Head’s beaches are marked near the dune line with signs to let emergency responders know where assistance is needed. They are also useful as a reference point if you or your group should become lost.

Beach Safety Tips: • Apply and reapply plenty of sunscreen even on cloudy days. • Wear sunglasses to prevent damage from the sun. • Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water. • Be aware of the rules and regulations of the beach. Signs are posted near most beach accesses. • Don’t leave your kids unsupervised even in guarded areas. • Note the location of the nearest lifeguard and report any hazardous conditions to him or her. • Know the name of the beach or hotel/ condo and the beach marker number where you are staying if you should need assistance. • There are often jellyfish and stingrays, as well as other sea life in and out of the water, which may sting or cut a person. In any situation where first aid is needed, find a lifeguard or seek further medical attention. • Call or wave for help if you are in trouble. hiltonhead.com

Water Safety Tips: • Don’t enter the water if you can’t swim. • Swim near a lifeguard. • Ask the lifeguard about any dangers in the water or on the beach, especially if he or she is flying a yellow caution flag. • Be aware of direction and strength of longshore currents. These currents can take you up and down the beach quickly and cause you or your kids to get lost. • Don’t let your kids swim unsupervised even in guarded areas. • Don’t swim alone. Use the buddy system so that someone always knows where you are so they can get help if needed. • Don’t overestimate your swimming ability. Stay in chest-deep or less water to insure you don’t get stuck in water over your head. • Don’t rely on flotation devices. • Swim parallel to shore if you want to swim long distances. • Don’t swim against the current. Swim across the current to escape the pull. • Always swim sober. • Don’t dive into unknown water or shallow breaking waves. Always go feet first.

Beach Prohibitions: The following are prohibited on all beaches: – Possession or consumption of alcohol – Glass (bottles, containers, etc.) – Littering – Indecent exposure or nudity – Disorderly conduct – Disturbing the peace – Unauthorized vehicles – Fires and fireworks – Shark fishing – Horseback riding or motorized driving – Removal, harming or harassment of any hiltonhead.com
