Alcohol:
Drinking/possession of alcohol on Hilton Head’s public beaches is illegal and could result in a fine of up to $500.
Liquor stores are not open on Sundays in South Carolina, though you can buy wine and beer in some gas stations and supermarkets.
Roundabouts:
You might as well learn to love South Carolina’s roundabouts.
They’re everywhere! There are just a few rules to follow in the two-lane roundabout:
• The drivers already in the roundabout have the right of way.
• Always yield to them before entering the roundabout.
• A roundabout is like any other flowing traffic—don’t stop in the middle.
• As annoying as it can be to get behind a big slow vehicle, it’s even worse to be stuck beside it in a roundabout. Just wait.
•Like with intersections, don’t change lanes while in the roundabout.
Beaches:
There are a few rules we all need to keep in mind to ensure a safe experience for everyone who comes to Hilton Head. It is therefore very important to remember that there is:
•No sleeping on the beach between midnight and 6 a.m.
•No driving on the beach
•No horses on the beach
•No fires on the beach
•No fireworks on the beach (you need a permit to set off fireworks anywhere on Hilton Head, and an offense will result in a misdemeanor and a $500 fine)
•No pets on the beach between 10 a.m.-5 p.m. the Friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day

The Town of Hilton Head Island provides nearly 60 miles of public pathways and nature trails for the enjoyment of pedestrians and cyclists.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ON THE PATHS: RECREATIONAL PATHWAYS GUIDE
• Obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws.
• Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users.
• Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles.
• Do not ride on roads when a pathway is available.
• Ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists.
• WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you.
• Yield to pedestrians. When resting or stopped,
please move off the pathway.
• Most sections of the pathways are not illuminat ed. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flashlight. Bicycles must have a red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night.
• When approaching slow er pathway users from behind, please sound your warning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left.
• Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under.
• Make eye contact and use hand signals. Assume other bicyclists and motor ists don’t see you. Hand signals tell motorists and other path users what you intend to do and will ensure everyone’s safety on the paths.
• Be courteous, alert and predictable.
• WHITE DIAMONDS INDICATE RESTRICTED TRAVELLANE: Travel with the flow of traffic.
• WHITE STRIPE & STOP SIGN INDICATE ROAD CROSSING: Stop and look for motorists.
• YELLOW CENTER LINE INDICATES TWO-WAY TRAFFIC: Keep to the right.
• SEVERAL WHITE DIAGONAL STRIPES INDICATE A CROSSWALK: Watch out for other bicyclists, pedestrians and motorists.
• At low tide, the Island’s 12 miles of beaches are ideal for biking. Public beaches are indicated on the Island Events map.
• Our map also shows the existing public pathways. Many kiosks are located along the pathways with an Island-wide map on one side and a localized map of the area on the other.
Photo: Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront ResortCREATURE FROM THE HILTON HEAD LAGOON
By Anthony R. Savarese, Reel CarolinaNative to the Island, alligators are often seen, but they can be elusive during the heat of summer and the cold of winter.
Alligators will go into a semi-hibernation period during the coldest months of the year, only emerging on the sporadic warm days we receive due to Hilton Head Island’s temperate climate. When this happens, they bask on the banks of lagoons, soaking up the sun’s warmth.
Alligators are ectothermic (coldblooded), and heat plays a major role in their bodily functions. Digestion and anabolic activity are all reliant on their ability to absorb and maintain body heat. If the animal has absorbed too much heat in the middle of summer, they will dive to the bottom of the lakes, burrow into the mud and slow their heart rate so as not to burn up the oxygen in their system. Alligators can stay submerged for long periods of time, and some have been known to stay underwater for over an hour.
An alligator’s diet consists of fish, birds and turtles. However, they are scavengers and will eat anything they can find, even something dead or decaying! Because alli-
gators have high levels of stomach acid, they can eat food that other animals, such as humans, find fouled or contaminated. This extraordinary adaptation is a critical aspect of survival for these animals.
Like other reptiles, alligators do not have to eat as much as warm-blooded animals and, depending on their environment’s temperatures, can go long periods of time without eating. However, they are capable of taking down large animals of prey. Visitors or people unfamiliar with the alligator species should proceed with caution because they can be very dangerous to humans.
The American Alligator is a precious natural resource that at one time was considered rare and endangered. Due to conservation efforts and education of the humans that share the same ecosystem and environment, alligators have experienced a rise in numbers and are no lon ger considered threatened. They are a resource worth protecting and we should work in harmony with the alligators, to ensure their survival for generations to come.

VIP Backstage Close-Up Magic Experience
ELECTRIC BICYCLE COMPANY
By Dani RayOf all the amazing attractions on and around Hilton Head, can you guess TripAdvisor’s #1 Top Attraction? It’s biking! With over 65 miles of leisure trails, Hilton Head has been designated a Gold-level Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists, one of only 24 such communities in the U.S.
For Jim and Sue Hall, it just doesn’t get better than experiencing Hilton Head on two wheels. “We’re not cyclist-level bikers,” says Jim, “but we still own the bikes we purchased before we got married 35 years ago, and all of our kids learned how to ride here on the Island.” So when a longtime bicycle business on Arrow Rd came up for sale, Jim and Sue decided to take the leap, and they signed the paperwork in May of 2020. Despite the awkward timing, the business is humming along two and a half years later. “We have a fleet of 2,500 bikes, 12 trucks, and a great team,” Jim says. “Our two mechanics have each been here for 24 years!”
Something else to know about this particular bike shop is that they
now offer quiet, emissions-free, American-made electric bikes! “Watching people experience e-bikes for the first time is really a thrill,” Jim says. “They are great for so many kinds of riders: commuters, grandparents who want to keep up with their grandkids and visitors who want to be able to relax and focus on all the amazing things you’ll see riding across Hilton Head.”
Speaking of tours, Hilton Head Electric Bicycle Company’s two-hour guided e-bike excursions will take you places you may not have seen with guides who grew up on the Island. The History and Nature Tour covers the history of Hilton Head and the local flora and fauna, the Beach Bum is a fun and breezy cruise at low tide and the Brewery Tour visits three local breweries for browsing, sampling, and exploring. No matter which you choose, be prepared to cover way more ground than you would on a typical bike ride!
A one-stop shop for all your biking needs, Hilton Head Electric Bicycle Company sells, services and rents all kinds of bikes—standard beach cruisers, high-end road bikes and everything in between. They offer free pick up and delivery for bike repair, and can even service another shop’s bikes! Ready to try something new? Stop in for a test ride, ask our experts your questions, and discover a new way to travel. Open every day from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

Go-kart races take off in Bluffton A NEED FOR SPEED
By Dani RayFifteen years ago, Paul McBride was dreaming of racing. The area around Hilton Head seemed to have it all, yet Paul felt something was missing. Something adrenaline-inducing but familyfriendly, high energy but low key. He could picture it: the karts would be super fast, made in Italy, one set for adults, another for children. He would need a building big enough to house it all: an elevated track plus a full arcade and bar/restaurant. Luckily, Paul’s family was on board with his vision. He and his wife Nikki run K1 Speed, but it’s a family business. Their children, Brandon, Lexi, and Madi, plus Paul’s father, Dennis McBride, and his sister, Colleen McBride, all work there full or part-time. “I had no idea how big the racing community was here,” says Colleen, the Operations Manager at K1 Speed. “Some of these guys are incredibly fast!”
When Colleen says fast, she means it. At K1 Speed, you can race wheel-to-wheel at speeds approaching 45 mph. But these are not the lawn mower-powered clunkers of the past. With K1 Speed’s European-style 100% electric karts, you don’t have to worry about stalling the engine or dropping out of the power band in a tight corner—these electric motors produce maximum torque at all speeds! Bonus: they are easier to drive, quiet, and produce zero emissions.
But that doesn’t mean it’s a quiet environment —quite the opposite. “The vibe is amazing; it
just doesn’t get any better,” Colleen enthuses. “When people walk in the door for the first time, it can be pretty disorienting as there's a lot going on. But our customer service is superb, our staff is just so on point, and we do a lot of orienting to what happens here.” One of the biggest questions is how it works for the kiddos. The ability to race is determined by height; children need to be at least 48 or maybe even 50 inches, depending on weight (the seats are adjustable). Karts can be controlled based on driver proficiency, so moderators can help find the best race speed for everyone. “It’s like air traffic control,” says Colleen. “I’m in awe of my guys who can do it!”
On September 23rd of this year, K1 Speed celebrated its first anniversary. “The community has been so receptive,” says Colleen. “It’s been amazing.” On Tuesdays, drivers can do three races for the price of two, on Thursdays from 7 p.m. to close there's Glo Karting, and on Saturdays, teens can race for $15.00 between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. K1 Speed is open 364 days a year, so driving enthusiasts can keep their skills sharp while escaping any weather. Come check it out— you’ve got to see it to believe it!

BULL REDS Are Top Targets is Time of Year
By Capt. Miles Altman, Bayrunner Fishing ChartersFall is a special time here in the Lowcountry for many reasons: t at r is tt r t cro s are thinner and the bull redfish swarm inshore waters.
The bulls, ranging from 20 pounds upwards to the 50-pound mark, are here or offshore all year. However, at this time of year, they come close in big numbers, with catches of 20 or more fish in a trip not at all uncommon.
The strength of these fish is incredible, rivaling any other fish of its size, short of an amberjack or tuna. I usually fish heavy spinning reels with 50-pound braid and, even with a heavy drag, they will strip a line off at an alarming pace. Incredibly, they often do it several times in a battle.
I have fished with lighter tackle, but the lengthy battle takes a toll on these big fish and they must be released. The law requires that everything over 23 inches must be returned to the water.
The smaller redfish also invade the creeks this time of year, offering the best light tackle sport fishing available. Shrimp (live or dead), cut mullet and menhaden all are favorite baits when fishing inshore.
Coloration is usually a deep burnt orange or copper across the back
with a single spot at the base of the tail. Some fish have multiple spots from the tail to the middle of the fish. A strong broad tail and thick shoulders give it all the horse power it needs to make an angler's day.
The proof, as they say, is in the pudding. Whether you want to light tackle redfish in the creeks or chase the big bulls, now is the time.
Capt. Miles Altman of Bayrunner Fishing Charters has more than 48 years of experience fishing the waters surrounding Hilton Head Island. Contact Capt. Miles at (843) 290-6955 or visit bayrunnerfishinghiltonhead.com to book an unforgettable inshore or offshore charter fishing trip.

Hilton Head Island has a long and rich history of visitors.
Captain William Hilton sailed the British ship Adventure north from Barbados, scouting lands to grow sugar cane for the crown. Approaching the Island by way of Port Royal Sound, he encountered a sliver of land and called it “Hilton’s Headland.”
Native Americans came to hunt and fish.
Conquistadors explored the area.
For many years, few permanent residents made their home on Hilton Head Island. Though the humid, subtropical climate was ideal for growing agricultural crops like cotton and rice, fear of disease and isolation kept antebellum plan tation owners on the mainland. Africans worked the plantations, and their unique blend of African and European traditions gave birth to the Gullah culture, which survives even today.
The Civil War brought big changes to Hilton Head Island. At the onset of the conflict, the South erected Fort Walker to protect the port. When the fort fell, tens of thousands of Union troops, prisoners, mis sionaries, shopkeepers and enslaved men and women seeking asylum flooded the Island. Suddenly humming with activity, Hilton Head became instrumental in the North’s blockade of nearby Southern ports. In 1863, the town of Mitchelville became the first self-governed town for freed men and women.
Developer and environmentalist Charles E. Fraser began work on the Island’s first resort, which he called Sea Pines. Fraser is sometimes called the father of the modern resort, and his vision for the Island was progressive, even by modern standards. His determination that no building be “higher than the tallest tree,” as well as his rejection of flashy neon signs, became central to the Island’s distinctive character.
1861-1865
Post Civil War1956 Late 1950s Today
After the Civil War, the Island’s population dropped to around 3,000, and by 1940, it had fallen to just over 1,000. Electricity finally came to the Island in 1950 and, six years later, Hilton Head’s very first bridge to the mainland made the area significantly more accessible.
Fraser’s legacy lives on in Hilton Head Island’s balance of commerce with green spaces, golf courses with wild places and thoroughfares with biking trails. Recently voted the Best Island in the U.S. by Travel and Leisure readers for the fifth time, this familyfriendly Sea Island seamlessly combines luxury, adventure and charm – all in one unforgettable destination.
Feel More, ink Less
In his book, Tiger Woods calls golf a game of opposites. I am inclined to agree. In my experience, each of these sayings I hear all the time are true:
• “When my swing feels slow, the ball goes fast.”
• “When I look down, the ball goes up.”
• “The less I think, the better I get.”
In golf (as in life), we often feel that “the harder I try, the worse I do.” This is a frustrating sentiment, and as a golf instructor and coach, I can feel players’ frustration. Human instincts are o r l a it s ot as to t t t golf swing, for example, it feels counterintuitive to strike the ball on the downswing, but time a ractic ill al a s s o t at t all i s farthest and fastest through excellent swing technique, a trust in physics and the design of t cl all co i i to cr at ci t a effortless power.
By Doug Weaver, Director of Instruction, Palmetto Dunes Golf AcademyMany of my students struggle with thinking too much. But concentration in golf is similar to typing, piano, shooting a free throw or serv ing in tennis: you have to let your many hours of practice guide you through the motions. The moment you start focusing on the moves you have to make, you’re in trouble. You have to train in the techniques, develop the skill, and then learn how to not be conscious of it during the action.
Dance instructors say that when you are counting your steps, you’re not dancing. I tell my students all the time to “set it and forget it.” But to get to this point requires hard work and discipline, and with it comes mental fatigue. Tiger also says, “train hard, play easy.”
My advice:
1. See the action you want in your imagination and repeat it over and over like a movie in your mind.
2. This will create a feel that you want in your golf shot. Focus on the feel, not all the details of the swing.

nated for the Alder Lane, Coligny, Driessen, Folly Field and Islanders Beach Parks. The boundaries will be clearly marked on the beach and in the water. Lifeguards are stationed at these designated areas for assistance and beach information.
Beach Marker Signs:
Hilton Head’s beaches are marked near the dune line with signs to let emergency responders know where assistance is needed. They are also useful as a reference point if you or your group should become lost.
Beach Safety Tips:
•Apply and reapply plenty of sunscreen even on cloudy days.
•Wear sunglasses to prevent damage from the sun.
•Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water.
•Be aware of the rules and regulations of the beach. Signs are posted near most beach accesses.
•Don’t leave your kids unsupervised even in guarded areas.
•Note the location of the nearest lifeguard and report any hazardous conditions to him or her.
•Know the name of the beach or hotel/ condo and the beach marker number where you are staying if you should need assistance.
•There are often jellyfish and stingrays, as well as other sea life in and out of the water, which may sting or cut a person. In any situation where first aid is needed, find a lifeguard or seek further medical attention.
•Call or wave for help if you are in trouble.
Water Safety Tips:
•Don’t enter the water if you can’t swim.
•Swim near a lifeguard.
•Ask the lifeguard about any dangers in the water or on the beach, especially if he or she is flying a yellow caution flag.
•Be aware of direction and strength of longshore currents. These currents can take you up and down the beach quickly and cause you or your kids to get lost.
•Don’t let your kids swim unsupervised even in guarded areas.
•Don’t swim alone. Use the buddy system so that someone always knows where you are so they can get help if needed.
• Don’t overestimate your swimming ability Stay in chest-deep or less water to insure you don’t get stuck in water over your head.
•Don’t rely on flotation devices.
•Swim parallel to shore if you want to swim long distances.
•Don’t swim against the current. Swim across the current to escape the pull.
•Always swim sober.
•Don’t dive into unknown water or shallow breaking waves. Always go feet first.
