Welcome to Hilton Head Island!
The heat is gone, Autumn has arrived and Hilton Head is the perfect place to sip your Pumpkin Spice Latte with sand between your toes. October may be the best time of year on our 12 mile Island. The crowds are thinner, the sun is less brutal, temperatures are still pleasant enough to enjoy the beach and water, but that’s just the start. Fall festivals, breweries celebrating Oktoberfest, fishing, boat tours, world-class dining, shopping, golf and more mean this is a great time to be on Hilton Head Island.
Here at Island Events, we are committed to making sure you don’t miss a thing and our dedicated columnists are in on it too. In this month’s edition our writers are all about Hilton Head’s beautiful wildlife; Master Naturalist Kathleen McMenamin tells us about the Island’s White-Tailed Deer, Capt. Miles Altman of Bayrunner Fishing Charters takes us fishing for Big Reds and Jessie Renew writes about “A Force of Nature.” If golf is more your
speed, Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy instructor Doug Weaver is getting us ready to hit the links.
But wait, there’s more! Also in this October issue of Island Events magazine we’ve got a few simple tips for enjoying our incredible parks and beaches, maps for navigating Hilton Head’s walking trails and paths and even some dos and don’ts for safely interacting with Island wildlife. We’ve got a rundown of the fun you don’t want to miss in our “Highlights” and this month’s Calendar of Events and you’ll want to glance at our curated listings for Dining, Shopping and Activities. Still want more? Check out hiltonheadisland.com, hiltonhead.com, bluffton. com, savannah.com, stsimonisland.com and beaufort.com.
We’re so glad you’re here on our little slice of heaven! Enjoy your visit on Hilton Head and tag/follow us at @HiltonHeadCom on Facebook and @DiscoverHiltonHead on Instagram.

The Town of Hilton Head Island provides nearly 60 miles of public pathways and nature trails for the enjoyment of pedestrians and cyclists.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ON THE PATHS:
• Obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws.
• Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users.
• Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles.
• Do not ride on roads when a pathway is available.
• Ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists.
• WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you.
RECREATIONAL PATHWAYS GUIDE
• Yield to pedestrians. When resting or stopped, please move off the pathway.
• Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flashlight. Bicycles must have a red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night.
• When approaching slower pathway users from behind, please sound your warning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left.
• Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under.
• Make eye contact and use hand signals. Assume other bicyclists and motorists don’t see you. Hand signals tell motorists and other path users what you intend to do and will ensure everyone’s safety on the paths.
• Be courteous, alert and predictable.
• WHITE DIAMONDS INDICATE RESTRICTED TRAVEL LANE: Travel with the flow of traffic.
• WHITE STRIPE & STOP SIGN INDICATE ROAD CROSSING: Stop and look for motorists.

White-Tailed Deer
By Kathleen McMenamin, Master Naturalist
Deer are a common sight throughout the majority of North America. These graceful, agile creatures can run at speeds of up to 30 mph. White-tailed deer are excellent swimmers as well, which is why they can be found on a number of South Carolina’s sea islands and barrier islands.
White-tailed deer, known as Odocoileus virginianus, can be seen throughout southern Canada and the United States. They inhabit mixed young forests, old fields and croplands. During the spring and summer, their coats are a reddish tan with short, thin, wiry hair. The deer’s winter coat is much thicker and may appear grayish or even bluish tan.
This species of deer has white patches on the eyes, throat, belly and, most notably, tail. South Carolina white-tails, a smaller variety, typically weigh up to 175 pounds. Deer throughout the rest of the U.S. have been noted to weigh up to 300 pounds. Male bucks grow antlers they will shed annually. The size of the antlers is directly correlated to the nutritional health of the deer, with larger antlers seen on very healthy individuals.
Breeding season for white-tails in the South begins in August and will last through January. Deer are polygamous, with one male breeding with several females. A female doe’s gestation period lasts for up to 210 days. Young females will commonly give birth to one fawn; as they become older, females may give birth to twins. Fawns will nurse for up to eight months and stay with their mother for up to a year. White-tailed deer reach their sexual maturity at a year and a half.
Young males grow small nubs known as buttons during their first year, with proper antlers beginning to develop at the age of two years. Growing antlers, usually developed in the summer, are soft and covered with short hairs known as velvet. By the late summer
and early fall, the antlers will harden. Males are known to rub off the velvet against trees and other coarse objects. They typically shed their antlers between December and February.
White-tailed deer are extremely social animals. Traveling in groups, known as herds, provides them with a sense of safety. They are able to communicate with each other predominantly through scent. They also use stomping or tail flicks as a form of subtle communication. Their white tail will flick upwards as a flag for other deer, to signal that danger is close.
White-tails forage mostly at dusk and dawn, but can be seen eating during the day as well. They are herbivores, consuming a wide variety of nuts, mushrooms, fruits and foliage. They have a four-chamber stomach, which aids in the digestion of roughage.
South Carolina’s deer hunting season is one of the longest seasons in the United States, beginning on August 15 and lasting through January 1. It is important for the state of South Carolina to cull the population of deer to keep this species under control. Issues of overpopulation can cause birth defects and malnutrition. At times, the imbalance of males to females can also cause malnutrition and reproductive stress on the species.

of Nature
By Jessie Renew
ctober in the LowCountry boasts some of the best weather of the year, and it also marks the end of the most active period of our annual hurricane season.
While the destruction and devastation that hurricanes bring is undeniable, there are positive effects that they have in our ecosystem. Many of the local plants and animals in our area are uniquely adapted to withstand, survive and even thrive during and after hurricanes.
Atlantic hurricanes form near the equator, between the Caribbean Sea and Cape Verde. Over the summer months, high temperatures create condensation over the ocean. When there is a lack of wind, the condensation is left to stew, creating a low-pressure environment.
The introduction of high pressure into the mix creates the rotation of the storm. Storms that form north of the equator spin counterclockwise, and those formed south of the equator spin clockwise. Winds, currents and fronts push tropical storms towards land, and sometimes they form hurricanes.
As the storm approaches, some animals, including humans, have the option to get out of town.
Dolphin, manatee, whales and sharks sense the turbulence and swim to deeper offshore waters, out of the way of the storm. Owls and woodpeckers choose to hide in the hollows of trees, where they are safe, as long as the tree stays standing and their entryway isn’t blocked by debris.
Migrating birds are greatly affected by tropical storms.
In some cases, flocks of birds can become
trapped in a natural “bird cage” in the eye of the storm. Others are forced to change course, which upsets the timing of their annual life cycle. Many birds nest in warm climates, and suffer losses of rookeries and habitat. While momentary losses can be great, the birds take advantage of the changes to find new places to nest that may not have been available before.
Still other animals use tropical storms to gain an advantage they wouldn’t otherwise have. Strong winds during hurricanes can down many types of trees, but at the same time they lift seed pods and blow them many miles, depositing the seeds much farther than they would ever get in normal circumstances. The destruction and confusion following a big storm is also great news for scavengers, like raccoons, who can find plenty of new food sources.
Tropical storms have shaped the land in the Lowcountry.
Storms cause the movement of large amounts of sediment, eroding some areas and re-depositing sediment in other areas. Through this process, new islands are born and existing barrier islands are fortified with new sediment. These natural events act as a necessary force of change which keep our local ecosystem diverse and thriving. This October, get outside and discover all the ways that weather and biology have contributed to our beautiful island!

REELING IN BIG REDS
Twenty-five feet below the surface, a marauding school of bull reds swept the sandy bottom, in search of prey. Honing in on the smell of fresh cut mullet, a large bull inhaled the chunk and, upon feeling the bite of the 8/0 circle hook, put his broad shoulders and tail into high gear.
Twenty-five feet above the bottom, on board the Phantom, the medium-heavy spinning rod bucked and then bent double as the reel drag started singing that song all anglers love to hear — line disappearing off the spool at a high rate.
One of the bright spots in our local fisheries is the impressive comeback of the red drum. Years of tight restrictions on bag limits and increased mariculture efforts by the state have resulted in one of our most prolific fisheries. Known by many names, including spottail bass, redfish (smaller ones) and bull reds (bigger ones), the red drum offers some of the best sport fishing for Lowountry anglers, regardless of whether they are land bound or boaters.
Bull reds make two strong runs a year, in April and in the fall, usually September and
October. During these times, catching doubledigit numbers of 20 to 40-pounders is not uncommon.
An occasional bull can be caught anytime of the year — and the smaller ones are here all year long, too but nothing can compare to the spring and fall.
On the Phantom, I like to use mediumheavy spinning rods with 40-pound braid. I fish a fairly tight drag. Letting the battle wear on with lighter stuff increases the recovery time and the mortality of the release fish. Multiple hookups are fairly common, creating a Chinese fire drill on board as anglers strive to keep the strong fish from tangling.
It’s great fishing the big bull reds, and the time is now!

GOLF: e Most Graceful Game
e Harder You Try, the Worse You Do
By Doug Weaver, Director of Instruction Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy
You know, this game of golf is as much my passion, as it is my teacher… I’ve made it my livelihood as Director of Instruction at Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy. But I’m regularly reminded, it’s not just about work. It’s also about calm, peace of mind and even a little zen.
With golf, the more you try to bully the ball, the less the game goes your way. But the more you relax and let practice and instruction take over, the better you do.
Here’s how it worked for a recent client. The lesson started with the balls flying low and going in every direction. She’d already mapped out three goals:
1. Higher ball flight to get over water and sand traps
2. More distance
3. More enjoyment in the game
The client said she typically needed a massage after a game and said she usually doesn’t wear her rings to play because it hurts her hands.
We tried a couple swings with our Top Tracer Technology to see what the numbers would show; first with her regular swing, then I suggested she relax her grip.
The regular swing went low and a little off aim. The relaxed swing sent the ball higher. She couldn’t believe it! She tried again with a relaxed grip, but more muscle. Again, the ball went low. On the course it wouldn’t have carried over the water or sand trap, and Top Tracer Technology showed the ball didn’t fly as far as the relaxed swing.
We traced a few more sets of opposing swings with Top Tracer Technology to verify the results and ultimately the relaxed, graceful swings won every time.
Moral of the story: a relaxed, practiced swing produces more clubhead speed, higher ball flight, more distance and more enjoyment of the game.

A Day on ~ the ~ Water
Life on Hilton Head Island revolves around the water, and few places offer so many opportunities to enjoy this liquid asset. From Broad Creek to the Calibogue Sound, the Intracoastal Waterway to the Atlantic Ocean, freshwater lagoons to brackish backwaters, you’re just moments away from a great day on the water.
Launch & Land
A perfect day on the water begins and ends at any of the Island’s many marinas, which feature an array of watersports, boat rentals, tackle shops, fishing charters and ecotours, as well as signature restaurants, shopping and entertainment. Explore the famous candy-striped Lighthouse in Harbour Town, the Mediterranean charm of Shelter Cove Harbour, the New England-style fishing village of South Beach Marina, the Key West atmosphere of Palmetto Bay Marina and the hidden charms of Broad Creek Marina, Skull Creek Marina and Hilton Head Harbor.
Bike the Beach
Hilton Head Island’s 12 miles of hardpacked, white-sand beaches provide the perfect playground for any age, at any time of year. Rent a beach cruiser to explore the strand at your own pace. Locals know that low tide is the perfect time to ride along the beach, when the sand is flat and hard-packed.
Dolphin Days
Have you ever seen Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphin in the wild? Don't miss the chance to take a local dolphin tour, where you'll see dolphin in their natural habitat and learn about their amazing behavior. A dolphin tour offers a family-friendly way to spend the day out on the water and to see these incredible mammals in action.
Reel Fun
Bait your hook and head out for a day of deep sea, inshore or shark fishing with experienced boat captains who know the secret spots. Or drop a line into the nearest lagoon, cast a shrimp net or try surf fishing on the beach to see what you can catch (and release!) this season.
Sail Away
Let the wind fill your sails as you salute the sunset on a Happy Hour Cruise, hail a water taxi to neighboring Daufuskie Island, spend a few hours or all day sightseeing, sign up for sailing lessons or rent a boat to play your way.
Go Wild
A natural setting for adventure, discover the wild side of the Island and the amazing array of animals that call it home. Enjoy a shark fishing excursion, alligator adventure or birdwatching tour to view the Island’s wild inhabitants.
Paddle Time
Experience the Island’s wildlife up close on a guided kayak or canoe trip through calm tidal creeks and Lowcountry marshlands. Choose from customized family adventures, corporate retreats, team building exercises or camps for kids, tweens and teens. Just don’t forget your camera to capture picture-perfect moments.
Fly High
Get an unforgettable bird’s-eye view of the Lowcountry on a helicopter ride, or spend a few thrilling hours on an aerial adventure ziplining through majestic oaks and pine trees at water’s edge. Either way, you'll enjoy an amazing view of the Island and all its beauty.

nated for the Alder Lane, Coligny, Driessen, Folly Field and Islanders Beach Parks. The boundaries will be clearly marked on the beach and in the water. Lifeguards are stationed at these designated areas for assistance and beach information.
Beach Marker Signs:
Hilton Head’s beaches are marked near the dune line with signs to let emergency responders know where assistance is needed. They are also useful as a reference point if you or your group should become lost.
Beach Safety Tips:
•Apply and reapply plenty of sunscreen even on cloudy days.
•Wear sunglasses to prevent damage from the sun.
•Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water.
•Be aware of the rules and regulations of the beach. Signs are posted near most beach accesses.
•Don’t leave your kids unsupervised even in guarded areas.
• Note the location of the nearest lifeguard and report any hazardous conditions to him or her.
•Know the name of the beach or hotel/ condo and the beach marker number where you are staying if you should need assistance.
•There are often jellyfish and stingrays, as well as other sea life in and out of the water, which may sting or cut a person. In any situation where first aid is needed, find a lifeguard or seek further medical attention.
•Call or wave for help if you are in trouble.
56 Island Events October 2023 hiltonhead.com
Water Safety Tips:
•Don’t enter the water if you can’t swim.
•Swim near a lifeguard.
•Ask the lifeguard about any dangers in the water or on the beach, especially if he or she is flying a yellow caution flag.
•Be aware of direction and strength of longshore currents. These currents can take you up and down the beach quickly and cause you or your kids to get lost.
•Don’t let your kids swim unsupervised even in guarded areas.
•Don’t swim alone. Use the buddy system so that someone always knows where you are so they can get help if needed.
•Don’t overestimate your swimming ability. Stay in chest-deep or less water to insure you don’t get stuck in water over your head.
•Don’t rely on flotation devices.
•Swim parallel to shore if you want to swim long distances.
•Don’t swim against the current. Swim across the current to escape the pull.
•Always swim sober.
• Don’t dive into unknown water or shallow breaking waves. Always go feet first.
