Vintages from Mexico offer incredible opportunities for discovery. By Georgene Mortimer, Island Winery Looking for a great wine discovery? Look no further than our neighbor to the south. Mexico has a thriving wine region, with a wide variety of delicious wines and a fascinating history. Let’s explore.

Wine grapes first arrived in Mexico with the Spanish conquistadors in the sixteenth century. After some years of trial and error, Mexican wines soon became preferred in the western colonies over wine from Spain. This fact — and the rise of the French wine industry — prompted Spanish King Phillip II to put an end to all Mexican wine production, in favor of local Spanish wine. However, some Jesuits and Dominican orders revolted. The Jesuits established vineyards in the Santo Tomas region, and the Dominicans set up vineyards in the Guadalupe Valley. Today, both regions thrive in the heart of Mexican wine country. Another fascinating chapter in Mexican wine history came in the early 1900s, when the Christian Russian Molokans (a.k.a “Jumpers”) relocated to Mexico’s Guadalupe Valley to escape religious persecution in their home country. They used their advanced farming skills to grow grapes, producing exceptionally high-quality wine. Their wine-making influence is still seen in the region today. The most recent advance for Mexican wines came in the 1980s, when the National Viticulture Association began a global effort to promote modern grape-growing and wine-making techniques. Mexican vineyards contain a mix of French, Spanish and Italian grapes that are particularly well-suited to the hot, dry climate. In this melting pot of grapes, you will find many unique wine blends that don’t follow European traditions. In Mexico, the vast majority of wine production occurs in the northern state of Baja, California, where the rugged terrain and cool fog off the Pacific Ocean help mitigate the searing heat. The wines from Baja share many characteristics with other warm-climate wines from regions such as Argentina, Southern Europe and South Africa. The slow change in temperature from summer to fall allows the grapes to become fully ripe, creating higher levels of alcohol. The longer growing season also allows the natural grape acids to drop off, so the resulting wines have bolder, ripe fruit flavors and less acidity. Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo and Chardonnay are the most planted grapes in Mexico, all of which thrive in the Mexican climatic zone. Merlot, Malbec, Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier also produce fine wines in this region. If you’re interested in trying a wine from Mexico, they aren’t too difficult to find. Large wine mega-stores may stock them, but they also can be purchased through reputable online distributors. Mexican wines are wellpriced and certainly worth exploring. HILTON HEAD HISTORY

Hilton Head Island has a long and rich history of visitors. 1520s

Thousands of Years Ago Native Americans came to hunt and fish.

1663 Captain William Hilton sailed the British ship Adventure north from Barbados, scouting lands to grow sugar cane for the crown. Approaching the Island by way of Port Royal Sound, he encountered a sliver of land and called it “Hilton's Headland.”

1861-1865 The Civil War brought big changes to Hilton Head Island. At the onset of the conflict, the South erected Fort Walker to protect the port. When the fort fell, tens of thousands of Union troops, prisoners, missionaries, shopkeepers and enslaved men and women seeking asylum flooded the Island. Suddenly humming with activity, Hilton Head became instrumental in the North's blockade of nearby Southern ports. In 1863, the town of Mitchelville became the first self-governed town for freed men and women.

Late 1950s

Developer and environmentalist Charles E. Fraser began work on the Island’s first resort, which he called Sea Pines. Fraser is sometimes called the father of the modern resort, and his vision for the Island was progressive, even by modern standards. His determination that no building be “higher than the tallest tree,” as well as his rejection of flashy neon signs, became central to the Island's distinctive character. hiltonhead.com

17th, 18th & 19th Centuries For many years, few permanent residents made their home on Hilton Head Island. Though the humid, subtropical climate was ideal for growing agricultural crops like cotton and rice, fear of disease and isolation kept antebellum plantation owners on the mainland. Africans worked the plantations, and their unique blend of African and European traditions gave birth to the Gullah culture, which survives even today.

Post Civil War - 1956 After the Civil War, the Island's population dropped to around 3,000, and by 1940, it had fallen to just over 1,000. Electricity finally came to the Island in 1950 and, six years later, Hilton Head’s very first bridge to the mainland made the area significantly more accessible.

Today Fraser's legacy lives on in Hilton Head Island’s balance of commerce with green spaces, golf courses with wild places and thoroughfares with biking trails. Recently voted the Best Island in the U.S. by Travel and Leisure readers for the third time, this family-friendly sea island seamlessly combines luxury, adventure and charm -- all in one unforgettable destination. The second Hilton Head Island Shrimp Festival will be held September 20 and 21 on the lawn adjacent to the Liberty Oak in Harbour Town. The event will feature a shrimp-tasting contest, food, craft beer, live music by Cranford Hollow and a fun zone for children, including face painting and bounce houses. Friday evening is the Craft Brew Fest from 5-8 p.m. with beers from over 12 local and regional breweries. Saturday's events are 2-5 p.m., featuring shrimp, craft beer and wine. Tickets are $35. The Shrimp and Craft Beer Ticket Combo is $65, which includes a two-day ticket for both Friday and Saturday events. This is a rain or shine event. Tickets are nonrefundable. Alcohol:

Drinking/possession of alcohol on Hilton Head's public beaches is illegal and could result in a fine of up to $500. Liquor stores are not open on Sundays in South Carolina, though you can buy wine and beer in some gas stations and supermarkets.

Roundabouts:

You might as well learn to love South Carolina’s roundabouts. They’re everywhere! There are just a few rules to follow in the two-lane roundabout: • The drivers already in the roundabout have the right of way. • Always yield to them before entering the roundabout. • A roundabout is like any other flowing traffic—don’t stop in the middle. • As annoying as it can be to get behind a big slow vehicle, it’s even worse to be stuck beside it in a roundabout. Just wait. • Like with intersections, don’t change lanes while in the roundabout.

Beaches:

There are a few rules we all need to keep in mind to ensure a safe experience for everyone who comes to Hilton Head. It is therefore very important to remember that there is: • No sleeping on the beach between midnight and 6 a.m. • No driving on the beach • No horses on the beach • No fires on the beach • No fireworks on the beach (you need a permit to set off fireworks anywhere on Hilton Head, and an offense will result in a misdemeanor and a $500 fine) • No pets on the beach between 10 a.m.5 p.m. the Friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day

Parking & Facilities:

Beach Marker Signs:

Hilton Head’s beaches are marked near the dune line with signs to let emergency responders know where assistance is needed. They are also useful as a reference point if you or your group should become lost.

Beach Safety Tips: • Apply and reapply plenty of sunscreen even on cloudy days. • Wear sunglasses to prevent damage from the sun. • Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water. • Be aware of the rules and regulations of the beach. Signs are posted near most beach accesses. • Don’t leave your kids unsupervised even in guarded areas. • Note the location of the nearest lifeguard and report any hazardous conditions to him or her. • Know the name of the beach or hotel/ condo and the beach marker number where you are staying if you should need assistance. • There are often jellyfish and stingrays, as well as other sea life in and out of the water, which may sting or cut a person. In any situation where first aid is needed, find a lifeguard or seek further medical attention. • Call or wave for help if you are in trouble.

Water Safety Tips: • Don’t enter the water if you can’t swim. • Swim near a lifeguard. • Ask the lifeguard about any dangers in the water or on the beach, especially if he or she is flying a yellow caution flag. • Be aware of direction and strength of longshore currents. These currents can take you up and down the beach quickly and cause you or your kids to get lost. • Don’t let your kids swim unsupervised even in guarded areas. • Don’t swim alone. Use the buddy system so that someone always knows where you are so they can get help if needed. • Don’t overestimate your swimming ability. Stay in chest deep or less water to insure you don’t get stuck in water over your head. • Don’t rely on flotation devices. • Swim parallel to shore if you want to swim long distances. • Don’t swim against the current. Swim across the current to escape the pull. • Always swim sober. • Don’t dive into unknown water or shallow breaking waves. Always go feet first.

Neptune K Statue

at Shelter Cove Harbour he towering 12-foot bronze statue of Neptune, which doubles as a largerthan-life sundial, serves as an iconic symbol of Shelter Cove Harbour at Palmetto Dunes, welcoming visitors to the entrance of the popular waterfront dining and shopping location.

Designed and installed by sculptor Wayne Edwards, this much-loved statue serves as a tribute to Neptune, the Roman god of the sea. The King Neptune statue, which depicts a bearded Neptune holding his signature trident, serves as a popular centerpiece at Shelter Cove Harbour. The statue is strategically mounted on a circular base with numbers around the edge. When the trident’s shadow falls across the 26-foot-wide base, the numbers indicate the precise time. Hailed as the world’s largest figurative sundial, the statue was originally cast at a foundry in Princeton, New Jersey, and shipped by truck to Hilton Head Island in 1983. Engineers made meticulous measure ments before the one-ton statue was installed, ensuring that it would be located at the ideal angle to indicate the time. They oriented the sculpture towards true south by aligning the constellation Ursa Major with the North Star. An official dedication for the statue was held at Shelter Cove Harbour on August 11, 1983, attracting residents and visitors alike. Today, the King Neptune statue delights generations of visitors to Shelter Cove Harbour, impressing adults and children of all ages. RECREATIONAL PATHWAYS GUIDE The Town of Hilton Head Island provides nearly 60 miles of public pathways and nature trails for the enjoyment of pedestrians and cyclists.

RULES FOR THE ROAD: • Please obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws. • Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users. • Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles. • Please do not ride on roads when a pathway is available. • Please ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists. • WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you. • Please yield to pedestrians. When resting or stopped, please move off the pathway.

• Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flashlight. Bicycles must have a red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night. • When approaching slower pathway users from behind, please sound your warning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left. • Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under. • Make eye contact and use hand signals. Assume other bicyclists and motorists don’t see you. Hand signals tell motorists and other path users what you intend to do and will ensure everyone’s safe enjoyment of the paths. Sea Turtles By Kathleen McMenamin Vicars, Master Naturalist

ea turtles have been part of our geological fossil records for over 210 million years. There are seven varietal species that can be found around the world in tropical, sub-tropical and temperate waters and all of them are endangered. In the coastal waters of Hilton Head Island, the Loggerhead Sea Turtle is the most common one to nest on our beaches during the summer months. Loggerhead Sea Turtles, Caretta caretta, are aquatic reptiles. They have four large and powerful flippers used to swim through the world’s oceans, as well as hydrodynamic-shaped shells that are well adapted to their aquatic lifestyle. The upper part of the shell is known as the carapace and is a reddish brown color; the dull yellow, brown lower part of their shell is known as the plastron. With large heads and strong jaws, their beak-shaped mouths are perfectly formed for a carnivorous diet. Weighing up to 400 pounds and reaching up to four feet in length, males will grow larger than females. However, once the young hatch, only females will ever return to land in order to lay eggs. Reaching reproductive maturity around the age of 35, breeding begins in the early spring. Once breeding has occurred, the females stay in local waters eating an abundance of shellfish and jellyfish, as the eggs develop. Nesting usually occurs at night between May and September. Once the female is ready to lay her eggs (about 30 days after breeding), she will come onto our local beaches making her way past the high tide mark to the soft sand and use her strong flippers to make a cavity about 18 inches deep. She then deposits, on average, 120 eggs which closely resemble ping-pong balls, buries the eggs and returns to the sea. She stays in the area for a few months, laying up to 4 different clutches throughout the summer. The eggs incubate in the nest for about 60 days and, as they are reptiles, incubation temperature determines gender. Warmer temperatures lead to more females, while cooler nests mean more males. The nests can be predated on by a number of different causes, both natural and unnatural. Ants, crabs, birds, racoons, feral hogs and dogs have been known to dig up and eat the turtle eggs. Human disturbance of nests is minimal, but can occur. When ready, the palm-sized young hatchlings work together to dig toward the top of the nest. They

instinctually hatch at night when surface sand temperatures are less dangerous. Once out of the nest, the hatchlings are able to find the ocean by the downward slope of the beach and the reflection of the moon off the surface of the ocean. Predators on the beach may get to some of the hatchlings as they make their way to the water. Others may head towards outdoor lights left on at beachfront properties. This disorientation usually leads to an entire clutch’s fatality and is the reason behind the local Lights Out for Turtles initiative. Once hatchlings have made it to the sea, they will swim for three days heading towards open water looking for large expanses of floating sargassum seaweed on the surface. The sargassum is a great habitat for young turtles, providing an abundance of both protection and food. After 12 years floating passively in the North Atlantic, they begin to head back into coastal waters along the Continental Shelf and continue to mature. Once they reach full maturity at the age of 35, the process begins again. In the 1970s, loggerheads were determined to be a threatened species by both South Carolina and the United States. The Hilton Head Island Sea Turtle Protection Project began in 1981 and, today, it is upheld through a group of volunteers and experts. On average, Hilton Head has about 250 turtle nests per year. An angling adventure unites father and son in a “bucket list” moment. The sun was a warm, golden orb barely above the horizon, a dim light on a perfectly calm ocean, as the thin clouds acted as gauzy curtains. Around us, tarpon boiled everywhere, with an occasional slurp confirming that they were feeding on the “guppies,” as Capt. Peter called them. Capt. Peter explained earlier that when the water was really hot, the small fish living in the shallows off the deep channels would suffer oxygen deprivation and come to the surface for air, making them an easy target for the hungry tarpon. My son, Caleb, and I had been here with Capt. Peter the morning before to no avail, but as Caleb made his first cast this day, it was game on! Setting the hook sideways, “because their mouth points up,” just as Capt. Peter had directed in his raspy British accent, Caleb’s rod bent double and the drag screamed in protest. The fish then launched a series of acrobatic aerial displays that were awesome to behold. A couple more searing runs were followed by pulling the boat in a circle, only to make a couple of dazzling jumps right beside the boat. 68 Island Events September 2019

Caleb and the fish were both tired now, and as he worked the fish near the skiff, Peter donned a glove and remarked, “He’s not going to like this,” as he grabbed the tarpon by the lower jaw. As predicted, the tarpon thrashed and bolted away. Caleb groaned. “Bloody lucky he’s not real big, or you’d be doing this for another hour or two,” Peter said with a raspy laugh. At 25 minutes into the fight, Capt. Peter successfully lipped the tarpon, removed the hook and let Caleb hold him for the pic. Revived shortly thereafter, the 60-pound tarpon swam off lazily, and we had accomplished our mission — getting Caleb his first tarpon! You see, Caleb has fished with me since he could walk, and has mated hundreds of hours for me on my charter boats. He has seen many tarpon here in the Lowcountry as a crewman, but never as an angler. It was a bucket list item for a 17-year-old and is now a cherished memory for a proud dad. Watching him skillfully battle that tarpon brought home years of learning that culminated with a great angler and an awesome fish battling it out. By any measure, that’s a priceless experience. Here’s what you need to know to protect yourself and the Lowcountry environment. By Anneliza Itkor, Outside Hilton Head

e may be into September, but our Hilton Head Island sunshine is still going strong.

Hilton Head’s sun is powerful, and just because summer is officially drawing to a close, your sunscreen should never be packed away. In order to maximize the effectiveness of your sunscreen, a little education can go a long way. Let’s start with the quality of protection sunscreen can offer. The concept of SPF, or Sun Protection Factor, can sometimes be a bit confusing. SPF 15 provides 93% protection from the sun. SPF 30 provides 97% protection, and SPF 50 provides 98% protection. So, you can see, the difference between SPF 30 and 50 is marginal. Even SPF 15 does a pretty good job of filtering out harmful rays. Spending extra money on SPF 75 and SPF 100 adds barely 1% additional protection and bathes your skin in more potentially harmful chemicals. Which leads us to the type of protection sunscreen can offer: chemical vs. physical. A chemical sunscreen will use oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate and octinoxate to filter out UVA and UVB rays. Chemical sunscreens soak into the skin and then absorb UV rays, convert the rays into heat, and release them from the body. Some people prefer a chemical sunscreen because it can be more water-resistant and holds up well when playing sports. Generally speaking, it can also absorb more easily into the skin. However, it’s full of chemicals and, since your skin is one big organ, anything you put on it is absorbed into your bloodstream and effects your body systemically. If this is a concern, you may choose to use a physical sunscreen. Physical sunblock sits on top of the skin and reflects the sun’s rays. The minerals titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are 70 Island Events September 2019

the main active ingredients in physical blocks. These sunscreens tend to be less irritating to the skin and are often more moisturizing. Some people don’t like the whitish cast you can have from a physical sunscreen, but newer formulations offer matte and tinted versions that prevent that ghostly white appearance. Here on Hilton Head Island, there is an extra reason to consider a physical sunscreen as your protection of choice. Research has shown that many of the ingredients in chemical sunscreens are damaging the marine life that make our beaches and tidal marshes so special. Petrolatum, parabens, oxybenzone and octinoxate have proven to be especially harmful. Even physical sunscreen can be considered harmful to our sea critters if it contains titanium dioxide. If you want to play your part in preserving our Island environment, use a non-nano particle zinc oxide physical sunscreen and take advantage of UPF clothing, so you have less skin to coat with sunscreen. Regardless of the type of protection you choose, the way you use it is equally important. Quantity is less important than even coverage. Remember that clothing shifts, so apply your sunscreen beyond the edges of your clothing. Don’t neglect places like your ears, the back of your neck, the tops of your feet and your hair part. And, it’s always best to apply sunscreen 30 minutes prior to exposure to the sun, especially if you are using a spray-on sunscreen.
