5 Places on Hilton Head for the Nature Lover.

Want an authentic Hilton Head ecological experience? Don't miss out on these 5 must-see spots.

Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge

Pinckney Island, located between Hilton Head Island and Bluffton, SC, attracts over a quarter of a million visitors each year. This easily accessible island offers a range of wildlife-dependent activities, including hiking, biking, and wildlife watching. If you're a fan of fishing, you ll be happy to know that saltwater fishing is permitted in the surrounding waters. And for those interested in hunting, there is an annual one-day deer hunt held in the fall.

The Refuge offers a variety of opportunities to explore and enjoy the great outdoors from sunrise to sunset. You can hike, bicycle, observe wildlife, take pictures or go saltwater fishing.

Pinckney Island is a crucial stop along the Atlantic Flyway for thousands of migratory birds each year. This sanctuary is not only a haven for these feathered travelers, but also serves as a rookery for colonial wading birds like ibis, egrets, and herons. In addition to protecting birds and other wildlife from disturbance, a "no dogs" policy is in place. www.fws.gov/refuge/pinckney-island.

Jarvis Creek Park

Located off William Hilton Parkway on Jarvis Creek Road, this 53-acre park includes a large pond and one-mile walking trail around the lake and workout stations. The lakeside paths extend out into wooded areas. The paved trail is equipped with wooden bridges over marshy areas.

There is abundant wildlife along this short and paved adventure. Be mindful of allgators lounging on the banks of the lake and watch these amazing creatures from a safe distance. This is a great trail for birding and offers solitude during quieter times of day. The trail is open year-round and is beautiful to visit anytime. Dogs are welcome. www. hiltonheadislandsc.gov/parks/JarvisCreek

Audubon Newhall Preserve

The Audubon Newhall Preserve is a 50-acre nature preserve located on the south end of the Island that is owned and operated by the Hilton Head Island Audubon Society.

Come explore the beautiful Audubon Newhall Preserve, a 50-acre nature sanctuary located on Hilton Head Island. Managed by

Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge
Jarvis Creek Park

the Hilton Head Island Audubon Society, a non profit organization, this preserve is dedicated to protecting the native forest ecosystem and providing a space for recreational and educational activities.

With a network of interconnected trails totaling about a mile, visitors can easily navigate and enjoy the natural surroundings. Whether you're an avid hiker or just looking for a leisurely stroll, the Preserve offers something for everyone.

Open daily from sunrise to sunset, the Preserve welcomes visitors of all abilities. Designated

Swimming Areas:

Official swimming areas have been desig-

nated for the Alder Lane, Coligny, Driessen, Folly Field and Islanders Beach Parks. The boundaries will be clearly marked on the beach and in the water. Lifeguards are stationed at these designated areas for assistance and beach information.

Beach Marker Signs:

Hilton Head’s beaches are marked near the dune line with signs to let emergency responders know where assistance is needed. They are also useful as a reference point if you or your group should become lost.

Beach Safety Tips:

•Apply and reapply plenty of sunscreen even on cloudy days.

•Wear sunglasses to prevent damage from the sun.

•Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water.

•Be aware of the rules and regulations of the beach. Signs are posted near most beach accesses.

•Don’t leave your kids unsupervised even in guarded areas.

• Note the location of the nearest lifeguard and report any hazardous conditions to him or her.

•Know the name of the beach or hotel/ condo and the beach marker number where you are staying if you should need assistance.

•There are often jellyfish and stingrays, as well as other sea life in and out of the water, which may sting or cut a person. In any situation where first aid is needed, find a lifeguard or seek further medical attention.

•Call or wave for help if you are in trouble.

Water Safety Tips:

•Don’t enter the water if you can’t swim.

•Swim near a lifeguard.

•Ask the lifeguard about any dangers in the water or on the beach, especially if he or she is flying a yellow caution flag.

•Be aware of direction and strength of longshore currents. These currents can take you up and down the beach quickly and cause you or your kids to get lost.

•Don’t let your kids swim unsupervised even in guarded areas.

•Don’t swim alone. Use the buddy system so that someone always knows where you are so they can get help if needed.

•Don’t overestimate your swimming ability. Stay in chest-deep or less water to insure you don’t get stuck in water over your head.

•Don’t rely on flotation devices.

•Swim parallel to shore if you want to swim long distances.

•Don’t swim against the current. Swim across the current to escape the pull.

•Always swim sober.

• Don’t dive into unknown water or shallow breaking waves. Always go feet first.

HILTON HEAD HISTORY

Hilton Head Island has a long and rich history of visitors.

Thousands of Years Ago

Native Americans came to hunt and fish.

Captain William Hilton sailed the British ship Adventure north from Barbados, scouting lands to grow sugar cane for the crown. Approaching the Island by way of Port Royal Sound, he encountered a sliver of land and called it “Hilton’s Headland.”

1520s

Conquistadors explored the area.

17th, 18th & 19th Centuries

For many years, few permanent residents made their home on Hilton Head Island. Though the humid, subtropical climate was ideal for growing agricultural crops like cotton and rice, fear of disease and isolation kept antebellum plantation owners on the mainland. Africans worked the plantations, and their unique blend of African and European traditions gave birth to the Gullah culture, which survives even today.

The Civil War brought big changes to Hilton Head Island. At the onset of the conflict, the South erected Fort Walker to protect the port. When the fort fell, tens of thousands of Union troops, prisoners, missionaries, shopkeepers and enslaved men and women seeking asylum flooded the Island. Suddenly humming with activity, Hilton Head became instrumental in the North’s blockade of nearby Southern ports. In 1863, the town of Mitchelville became the first self-governed town for freed men and women.

Charles E. Fraser began work on the Island’s first resort, which he called Sea Pines. Fraser is sometimes called the father of the modern resort, and his vision for the Island was progressive, even by modern standards. His determination that no building be “higher than the tallest tree,” as well as his rejection of flashy neon signs, became central to the Island’s distinctive character.

HOROSCOPE SEPTEMBER

ARIES Courage and energy are in store this month, Aries! That means clarity and decisiveness, even in the face of turmoil. Use this time to strengthen relationships and maybe even heal old wounds. If you’re wanting romance, act on it. Don’t forget, those who are happy and succeeding are easy targets. Don’t let ‘em get you down. Protect your joy and your peace.

TAURUS You may have a couple hurtles this September, but don’t let it drown out your fun. Focus on your strengths, talk to your loved ones and remember, this is just temporary. Now might be the perfect time to use activity for relieving stress, whether physical activity, crafting, writing or going out with your friends. Make finding tranquility your goal.

GEMINI Put on your boxing gloves, we’ve got some strife to beat down! You already know you’ve got too much on your plate, practice saying “No!” Lean on your community, right now, Gemini! Delegating responsibility is not weakness, it’s wisdom. Be hyper conscious of your health this month. You deserve that ever elusive “peace.”

CANCER You are craving connections this September. Get out, be social. But don’t allow negative habits to creep in. Remind yourself of your value and work on some self care. Read that new book, get back to your workout habits, meditate. Remember that being alone isn’t all bad.

LEO It’s smooth sailing for September, Leo! Take advantage of it, clean out the closet, organize the attic, wrap up those unfinished tasks. Be mindful of your health; eat well, be active. This also may be a good month for travel and spending time with your loved ones.

VIRGO You’ve got a need to nurture this month, indulge it whether that means helping in the nursery at church or maybe at a senior center or even volunteering at an animal shelter. You’re also feeling hospitable and generous, but don’t allow others to take advantage. Helping is great, but not to the point it causes harm to your own finances or your family.

LIBRA Energy and inspiration are headed your way this September. Use them for good! Maybe give the house a good cleaning or tackle that long neglected task. Use this burst of vigor to improve your fitness too. Get out in nature, check out that new yoga class or return to the gym. One month with consistent healthy habits could lead to a lifetime of benefit.

SCORPIO

Emotions are stirring in September, don’t get swept away. Survey your circumstances and make sure you’re on the healthiest path. Loyalty is to be prized, but if you’re in a situation that’s causing harm or not allowing you to grow, perhaps you should find an exit. Speak with someone you trust. Physical activity and meditation will also help clear your mind.

SAGITTARIUS

Get ready to shine, Sagittarius! Your charm and gift for communication will serve you well. Now is the time to take on a new project and see what you can achieve. Whether it’s on the job or in your neighborhood, surround yourself with people you believe in and see what kind of difference you can make.

CAPRICORN

Stay on top of time management this month, effectiveness and priorities could be a problem. Extra duties may fall in your lap. Don’t let yourself be overwhelmed. Communicate honestly about responsibilities and try to prioritize. It may seem difficult, but staying healthy is vital. That means also prioritizing a healthy diet and exercise.

AQUARIUS Hold on to your hat, Aquarius! Emotions and romance could be swirling this month. Be careful to do no harm. Maybe expend that extra energy in the gym or use it as motivation on the job. Keep track of yourself this month, reliability is needed. Don’t rely on charm to get you out of sticky situations, instead, work on your follow through.

PISCES Take care of your mental health this September, Pisces! You may be feeling stressed and overwhelmed. The Town of Hilton Head Island provides nearly 60 miles of public pathways and nature trails for the enjoyment of pedestrians and cyclists.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ON THE PATHS:

• Obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws.

• Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users.

• Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles.

• Do not ride on roads when a pathway is available.

• Ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists.

• WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you.

RECREATIONAL PATHWAYS GUIDE

• Yield to pedestrians. When resting or stopped, please move off the pathway.

• Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flashlight. Bicycles must have a red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night.

• When approaching slower pathway users from behind, please sound your warning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left.

• Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under.

• Make eye contact and use hand signals. Assume other bicyclists and motorists don’t see you. Hand signals tell motorists and other path users what you intend to do and will ensure everyone’s safety on the paths.

• Be courteous, alert and predictable.

• WHITE DIAMONDS INDICATE RESTRICTED TRAVEL LANE: Travel with the flow of traffic.

• WHITE STRIPE & STOP SIGN INDICATE ROAD CROSSING: Stop and look for motorists.

• YELLOW CENTER LINE INDICATES TWO-WAY TRAFFIC: Keep to the right.

• SEVERAL WHITE DIAGONAL STRIPES INDICATE A CROSSWALK: Watch out for other bicyclists, pedestrians and motorists.

• At low tide, the Island’s 12 miles of beaches are ideal for biking. Public beaches are indicated on the Island Events map.

• Our map also shows the existing public pathways. Many kiosks are located along the pathways with an Island-wide map on one side and a localized map of the area on the other.

The First Line of Lowcountry Defense

One of the things that makes the Lowcountry so special is our beautiful salt marsh. Our salt marshes are our defining characteristics of beauty and biodiversity. Our salt marshes are the buffer between us and the water, surrounding our local sea and barrier islands. Each of these geographical features play very important roles in protecting humans, and the mainland from storm surges, king tides and heavy winds. As weather patterns change, the marsh is more important than ever in helping us with storm surges and super tides. It is vital that we protect them, in order to protect ourselves.

We have 35 barrier islands and thousands of sea islands along our coast. Barrier islands run parallel to the Atlantic Ocean. They are islands that have sandy beaches facing the ocean and saltmarshes on the non-ocean facing sides. Sea Islands lay between barrier islands and the mainland, often surrounded by salt marsh. These islands stand as the primary and secondary defense, protecting the mainland from flooding and heavy winds. Both barrier islands and sea islands have dunes, wetlands, marshes and maritime forests that play integral roles in protecting us from open ocean elements.

South Carolina has approximately 344,000 acres of salt marsh. Spartina Alterniflorais or better known as spartina grass or marsh grass is a key element of salt marshes and land management. The grass grows outwardly into the marshes, where the root systems have an extensive spread that holds the underlying sediment, pluff mud together. When the grasses die off in the winter months, their broken reeds are carried with the tide and get deposited along our beaches and creek bank. They then decompose to create more sediment. Spartina grass will absorb wind and storm energy before it hits the land. Have you ever paddled down the middle of a creek and found it hard to paddle against the wind? If you duck behind the spartina on the windward side it makes your paddle much easier. It is the same with heavy storm gusts; the spartina grass will absorb a large portion of the wind before it comes ashore. The spartina stands strong against the waves and storm surge, breaking them up before they hit the land, as well as slowing down currents as they rush onshore. The plants themselves also absorb water through their root system slowing down potential damage.

Pluff mud, the main sediment of our salt marshes, is a very thick, viscous mud that absorbs water. The mud slows and absorbs both rainwater and tidal inundation. This is due to the sediments being so fine and clay-like. Anyone who has stepped into pluff mud and lost a shoe can vouch for its tenacity. It is also an excellent filter for rainwater runoff from the land after large storms have passed.

Past the salt marsh, you can find the high marsh and then the maritime forests. The high marsh consists of plants that can absorb both fresh and salt water such as black needle rush, picklewort and sea oxeye daisy. Moving inland past the high marsh we have our maritime forest, with plants specially developed to withstand heavy, salty water and high winds. Live Oaks are huge water absorbers and their branches grow horizontally before growing vertically in order to stabilize themselves in heavy winds. This is why they were historically planted along plantation entry roads.

South Carolina understands the importance of our salt marshes and the role that it plays in protecting its people and the land. Salt marshes are protected here, which means that we can not build in them or over them. There are places in the United States where this has happened, and when large storms come through, it can have devastating results. The water needs to run off somewhere and is best absorbed by natural means. We can all continue the efforts of protecting our salt marsh and in turn protecting our beautiful lowcountry.

Here’s what you need to know to protect yourself and the Lowcountry environment.

We may be into September, but our Hilton Head Island sunshine is still going strong.

Hilton Head’s sun is powerful, and just because summer is officially drawing to a close, your sunscreen should never be packed away. In order to maximize the effectiveness of your sunscreen, a little education can go a long way.

Let’s start with the quality of protection sunscreen can offer. The concept of SPF, or Sun Protection Factor, can sometimes be a bit confusing. SPF 15 provides 93% protection from the sun. SPF 30 provides 97% protection and SPF 50 provides 98% protection.

So, you can see, the difference between SPF 30 and 50 is marginal. Even SPF 15 does a pretty good job of filtering out harmful rays. Spending extra money on SPF 75 and SPF 100 adds barely 1% additional protection and bathes your skin in more potentially harmful chemicals.

Which leads us to the type of protection sunscreen can offer: chemical vs. physical. A chemical sunscreen will use oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate and octinoxate to filter out UVA and UVB rays. Chemical sunscreens soak into the skin and then absorb UV rays, convert the rays into heat and release them from the body. Some people prefer a chemical sunscreen because it can be more water-resistant and holds up well when playing sports. Generally speaking, it can also absorb more easily into the skin. However, it’s full of chemicals and, since your skin is one big organ, anything you put on it is absorbed into your bloodstream and affects your body systemically.

If this is a concern, you may choose to use a physical sunscreen. Physical sunblock sits on top of the skin and reflects the sun’s rays. The

minerals titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are the main active ingredients in physical blocks. These sunscreens tend to be less irritating to the skin and are often more moisturizing. Some people don’t like the whitish cast you get from a physical sunscreen, but newer formulations offer matte and tinted versions that prevent that ghostly white appearance.

Here on Hilton Head Island, there is an extra reason to consider a physical sunscreen as your protection of choice. Research has shown that many of the ingredients in chemical sunscreens are damaging the marine life that make our beaches and tidal marshes so special. Petrolatum, parabens, oxybenzone and octinoxate have proven to be especially harmful.

Even physical sunscreen can be considered harmful to our sea critters if it contains titanium dioxide. If you want to play your part in preserving our Island environment, use a non-nano particle zinc oxide physical sunscreen and take advantage of UPF clothing, so you have less skin to coat with sunscreen. Regardless of the type of protection you choose, the way you use it is equally important. Quantity is less important than even coverage. Remember that clothing shifts, so apply your sunscreen beyond the edges of your clothing. Don’t neglect places like your ears, the back of your neck, the tops of your feet and your hair part. And, it’s always best to apply sunscreen 30 minutes prior to exposure to the sun, especially if you are using a spray-on sunscreen.

Now, you can confidently get out and safely enjoy the watersport adventures offered by Outside Hilton Head without damaging your skin or our wildlife.

The Four Boxes to Better Golf

Jack Nicklaus is facing down the last hole of the PGA Tour event. A birdie will put him in the playoff. An eagle will win it. He has a three wood over water, requiring a fade to the pin. Nicklaus stares at the gap between the ball and the ag, his eyes tracking the lines. He approaches the ball, settles in, waggles and then hesitates. Instead of taking the shot, he steps back, places the three wood in the bag and wipes his hands.

The swelling crowd holds its breath as icklaus finally returns to take the shot. e steps back into his routine, staring down the line between the ball and the ag, tracking the ball s imaginary ight. e swings, sending the ball ying over the water. It bounces onto the green toward the pin, now ust five feet away. He makes the putt, an eagle. Nicklaus has won the tournament.

Later, in the press room, everyone wanted to know: what were you doing for so long before you hit that incredible shot? “I went to the movies,” he said. Nicklaus explained that just as in a movie, he watches himself performing the shot correctly with the ball ying toward the pin. is body responds by creating the feeling he needs to hit the desired shot. He had lost the feeling during his first attempt, so he went back to the movies, found the feeling and trusted it.

The Four Boxes

is similar in his approach. It is a pre-shot routine that organizes and simplifies our thoughts into a feeling that we must trust.

Rest Box

is the biggest bo , filled with the many thoughts that we need to simplify. Here, we begin breathing systematically, becoming aware of any tension and eliminating it.

Memory Box

is a smaller box, and here we choose to remember a similar shot that was successful. We picture it, and dwelling on it triggers positive emotions and feelings.

Think Box

is even smaller, where we consciously execute the moves required for the desired shot. We practice with the purpose of creating a simple and encouraging feeling. We take only that feeling with us into the final bo .

Play Box

is the smallest box. No other thoughts are allowed here; we are focused only on trusting the feeling.

Learning to lean into the joy of playing is what it’s all about. Come join us on the green!

A First Mate’s First TARPON

The sun was a warm, golden orb barely above the horizon, a dim light on a perfectly calm ocean, as the thin clouds acted as gauzy curtains. Around us, tarpon boiled everywhere, with an occasional slurp confirming that they were feeding on the “guppies,” as Capt. Peter called them.

Capt. Peter explained earlier that when the water was really hot, the small fish living in the shallows off the deep channels would suffer oxygen deprivation and come to the surface for air, making them an easy target for the hungry tarpon.

My son, Caleb, and I had been here with Capt. Peter the morning before to no avail, but as aleb made his first cast this day, it was game on! Setting the hook sideways, “because their mouth points up,” just as Capt. Peter had directed in his raspy British accent, Caleb’s rod bent double and the drag screamed in protest.

he fish then launched a series of acrobatic aerial displays that were awesome to behold. A couple more searing runs were followed by pulling the boat in a circle, only to make a couple of dazzling jumps right beside the boat.

aleb and the fish were both tired now, and as he worked the fish near the skiff, Peter donned a glove and remarked, “He’s not going to like this,” as he grabbed the

tarpon by the lower jaw. As predicted, the tarpon thrashed and bolted away. Caleb groaned.

“Bloody lucky he’s not real big, or you’d be doing this for another hour or two,” Peter said with a raspy laugh. At 25 minutes into the fight, apt. eter successfully lipped the tarpon, removed the hook and let Caleb hold him for the pic. Revived shortly thereafter, the 60-pound tarpon swam off lazily, and we had accomplished our mission — getting aleb his first tarpon!

ou see, aleb has fished with me since he could walk, and has mated hundreds of hours for me on my charter boats. He has seen many tarpon here in the Lowcountry as a crewman, but never as an angler.

It was a bucket list item for a 17-year-old and is now a cherished memory for a proud dad. Watching him skillfully battle that tarpon brought home years of learning that culminated with a great angler and an awesome fish battling it out. y any measure, that’s a priceless experience.

Capt. Miles Altman of Bay Runner Fishing Charters has more than 50 years experience fishing the waters surrounding Hilton Head Island. Don’t miss the new Finatic boat, which can accommodate up to 12 passengers and features a special threehour shark/dolphin eco-tour trip. Contact Miles at (843) 290-6955 to book an inshore or offshore charter fishing trip, departing from Shelter Cove Marina.

A Day on ~ the ~ Water

Launch & Land

A perfect day on the water begins and ends at any of the Island’s many marinas, which feature an array of watersports, boat rentals, tackle shops, fishing charters and ecotours, as well as signature restaurants, shopping and entertainment. Bait your hook and head out for a day of deep sea, inshore or shark fishing with experienced boat captains who know the secret spots. Or drop a line into the nearest lagoon, cast a shrimp net or try surf fishing on the beach to see what you can catch (and release!) this season.

Sail Away

Let the wind fill your sails as you salute the sunset on a Happy Hour Cruise, hail a water taxi to neighboring Daufuskie Island, spend a few hours or all day sightseeing, sign up for sailing lessons or rent a boat to play your way.

Go Wild

A natural setting for adventure, discover the wild side of the Island and the amazing array of animals that call it home. Enjoy a shark fishing excursion, alligator adventure or birdwatching tour to view the Island’s wild inhabitants.

Paddle Time

Experience the Island’s wildlife up close on a guided kayak or canoe trip through calm tidal creeks and Lowcountry marshlands. Choose from customized family adventures, corporate retreats, team building exercises or camps for kids, tweens and teens. Just don’t forget your camera to capture picture-perfect moments.

Fly High

Get an unforgettable bird’s-eye view of the Lowcountry on a helicopter ride, or spend a few thrilling hours on an aerial adventure ziplining through majestic oaks and pine trees at water’s edge. Either way, you'll enjoy an amazing view of the Island and all its beauty.

This big song and tap-dance phenomenon was hailed as “the funniest musical in at least 400 years!” The history-twisting tale is more than a splashy musical, it’s a brilliant satire with the wittiest wordplay to be found onstage! Especially true with this show, “nothing’s as amazing as a musical!”
