Made famous by Jack Leigh‘s photograph for the cover of John Berendt’s bestselling novel of Savannah, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, Judson’s sculpture was removed from the cemetery to Telfair Museums, where it has been enjoyed by visitors for decades. HISTORIC CEMETERIES Museum of Art. HOW TO GET THERE: Bonaventure is located just off Pennsylvania Ave. on Bonaventure Rd. HOURS: Open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Colonial Park Cemetery
Colonial Park Cemetery is the city’s only non-active cemetery, meaning that no more burials take place on this historic plot of land, located at the corner of Abercorn Street and Oglethorpe Avenue.
No visit to Savannah is complete without a visit to the city’s historic cemeteries, each of which serves as a final resting place for many of Savannah’s most fascinating residents. All of these cemeteries are situated amid incredibly scenic surroundings. Even if cemeteries give you goosebumps, you’ll be glad you stopped by to experience some of Savannah’s unique history firsthand. Just don’t stay too long!
Bonaventure Cemetery
Immortalized by John Berendt in his bestseller Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, Bonaventure is the final resting place for many of Savannah’s most prominent citizens, includ ing songwriter Johnny Mercer (1909-1976), poet Conrad Aiken (1889-1973) and plantation owner Noble Jones (1701-1775), one of Savannah’s origi nal settlers who colonized the city with General James Oglethorpe in 1733. Located along the scenic banks of the Wilmington River, Bonaventure Cemetery also has group burial sites for the American Legion Field, the Confederate States of America, the Order of Railroad Conductors and the veterans of the Spanish-American War. Originally a 600-acre plantation, Bonaventure was sold for $5,000 in 1846 to Savannah businessman Peter Wiltberger, who turned the land into a public cemetery called Evergreen Cemetery. The City of Savannah purchased Evergreen Cemetery in 1907 and turned it into Bonaventure Cemetery. Savannah photographer Jack Leigh captured the image that graces the cover of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil — a burial statue, nicknamed The Bird Girl, that once stood in the heart of Bonaventure Cemetery. The Bird Girl statue is currently on display at the Telfair
Walk through the graceful arch erected by the Daughters of the American Revolution and you will discover a window into Savannah’s rich past. Many of Savannah’s earliest settlers are buried in Colonial Park, whose gravestones date back to the 1700s. Today, Colonial Park Cemetery serves as a park for many Savannah residents. Many Savannahians stroll through the cemetery in the early morning, or walk their dogs within the cemetery’s wrought iron perimeter in the evening. HOW TO GET THERE: The main entrance is located at the corner of Abercorn St. and Oglethorpe Ave. HOURS: Open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Laurel Grove Cemetery
Established in 1852, Laurel Grove Cemetery has thousands of graves that reflect Savannah’s rich history, situated amid groves of live oak, magnolia and dogwood trees. This contem plative site, which features ornate ironwork and magnificent statuary on many of the lots, was once called Springfield Plantation. Laurel Grove is divided into two distinct sec tions, by a highway connector. Laurel Grove North, perhaps the better-known part of the cemetery, is the burial place of hundreds of Confederate soldiers, as well as prominent citizens like Juliette Gordon Low, the found er of the Girl Scouts, and Florence Martus, The Waving Girl of Savannah. Laurel Grove South serves as the final resting place for many members of Savannah’s AfricanAmerican community. Many slaves, freedmen and even two African-American Confederate veterans are buried in Laurel Grove South. HOW TO GET THERE: Laurel Grove Cemetery is best accessed from Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. Turn right onto Anderson St. HOURS: Open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Art In Savannah Savannah’s quality of life is unrivaled by any comparably sized city in the South. In fact, part of the appeal of Georgia’s First City lies in its surprisingly rich array of cultural offerings from the visual arts to live music. Savannah is home to more than 40 galleries, the oldest art museum in the South and the Savannah College of Art and Design. Literally thousands of artists, including students and professionals, flock to this city with its history of strong support for the arts. The relationship between Savannah and its creative residents is reciprocal: not only has the city supported its artists, but its artists have played a key role in the city’s continued growth and vitality. Just a quick elevator ride to the upper-level studios in the Franklin Ward North and Franklin Ward South Buildings in Historic City Market is where you will discover a wide variety of original art. Take the time to explore the area and visit with more than 50 artists as they bring the “Art of Savannah” to life - all of which is as unique as the city itself.

Tour Pass Savannah: Experience the Best of Historic Savannah
P
lanning a trip to Savannah — a nationally recognized hotspot filled with historic homes, ghost tours, cultural sites and historic museums — can be overwhelming for first-time visitors looking to make the most of their time in the Hostess City. “With Tour Pass, we simplified this daunting process by including only the best tours, attractions and sites into one pass,” said Savannah Tour Pass founder Keith Simmons. “We give the visitor more control over their vacation by providing them with the ability to plan out their day by booking reservations in advance and utilizing our interactive maps to see what’s close to where they are.” The smartphone-based Tour Pass recently expanded to Savannah after a successful rollout in Charleston, South Carolina, in 2018. “Customers would message us often asking if we had a Savannah Pass,” Keith said. “We love Savannah, so it made perfect sense for Charleston’s sister city to be our second city to launch.” Tour Pass Savannah, an all-access mobile pass, equips visitors with interactive maps designed to navigate the city’s cobblestone streets and point out nearby landmarks, including the National Historic Landmark District’s 22 squares, City Market and River Street. Given a curated list of more than 30 of the area’s top attractions to choose from, passholders select a limited number of featured attractions and make reservations with their mobile pass link. Visitors can also choose an unlimited number of participating walk-in attractions to visit. The most visited attractions include the hopon, hop-off trolley by Old Savannah Tours, the Savannah Riverboat cruise, walking tours, carriage tours and historic house museums. Other participating attractions include the Andrew Low House, Davenport House,
36 Savannah Scene July-August 2019
Flannery O’Connor Childhood Home, Green-Meldrim House, Old Fort Jackson, Savannah History Museum, Telfair Academy, Jepson Center for the Arts and many more. The Monuments OF RIVER STREET
There is an unbelievable amount of history up and down Savannah’s cobblestone riverfront. And the monuments placed along it pay homage to our city's past and allow for visitors to enjoy their statuesque beauty and symbolism. A WORLD APART: The World War II Monument is also known as The Cracked Earth Monument. The two halves of the globe are split, representing the conflict of a world divided. The Monument is lit at night, and inside are the names of all who served from Chatham County, a Purple Heart, and a WWII Victory Medal. A World Apart is located at the center of River Street, on the west side of the Hyatt tunnel. THE WAVING GIRL: Greeting every ship that comes into the Savannah port is the statue commemorating Florence Martus, the waving girl. Between 1887 and 1931 Florence took it upon herself to be the greeter of all the ships in the harbor, waving them down with a white handkerchief or lantern. She was the daughter of an ordinance sergeant at Fort Pulaski, living on Elba Island with her brother and Border Collie. Though there are several speculations as to why she waved down every boat, one of them being that she was waiting for a sailor she fell in love with to return; the true reason is still a mystery. The statue is located at the east end of River Street in a grassy area near the Marriott hotel. THE ANCHOR MONUMENT: This Monument was founded by Margaret Campbell, who organized the Port of Savannah Chapter of the Women’s Propeller Club. It was built in 1976 and dedicated to all merchant seaman lost at sea. THE AFRICAN AMERICAN MONUMENT: This monument was built in 2002, designed by Savannah College of Art and Design professor Dorothy Spradley. It shows a family embracing with the chain of slavery at their 50 Savannah Scene July-August 2019

feet. The side of the monument has a powerful inscription by Maya Angelou, a selection of it reading: “We were stolen, sold and bought together from the African continent. ... Today, we are standing up together, with faith and even some joy.” It stands on the east side of River Street, right by the Hyatt tunnel. WASHINGTON’S GUNS: These two cannons were presented to the Chatham Artillery by George Washington in 1791, after he seized them from Cornwallis at Yorktown during the American Revolution. The guns were originally named La Populaire and were of French make in 1756. Later, during the Civil War, the guns were buried beneath the Chatham Artillery armory until 1872. They now sit on Bay Street, just to the right of City Hall, next to the top level of River Street. THE OLD HARBOR LIGHT: Also known as the Savannah Harbor Rear Range Light or the Beacon Range Light, it was built in 1858 to guide ships into the Savannah Harbor and away from six British ships which were sunk earlier in 1779 to keep French and American vessels away in the Revolutionary War. It was turned off during World War II but has since been restored twice. It now sits at the east side of Emmet Park. savannah.com

July 2019
ARIES This month, you're putting a lot of thought into what your life could have been like. Focus on making every day as dazzling as possible. Find areas that can use improvement and get to work! TAURUS Studies have shown that giving thanks every day actually leads to a brighter outlook and a better overall mood. Set a daily alarm on your phone and list three things you're grateful for. You’ll give your perspective an instant boost. GEMINI Stress may have you feeling a little off-balance this month. Try turning off all but your essential phone notifications. Want an uptick in your love life? Stop looking for love online. Keep your eyes open because someone special may already be in the picture. CANCER Research shows that the act of putting your bare feet, hands or body on the earth can help with circulation, inflammation, anxiety and much more. This month, find a way to sneak in "grounding" whenever you can. Your electrons will thank you. LEO You may have thoughts about making a major life change this month. Instead of ignoring those inclinations, try to make conscious choices about what you want to hear and learn. Before you know it, you will be ready to make an informed decision. VIRGO Studies show that people can actually heal themselves by just visualizing it in their minds. What's in your mind right now? Are your inner thoughts healing and motivating or negative and defeatist? The choice is entirely up to you. 56 Savannah Scene July-August 2019
LIBRA Due to unforeseen circumstances, you are giving some thought to your legacy this month. Start by envisioning what you would want said at your memorial service and live with that end in mind. It's never too late to become the person you want to be. SCORPIO Feel like you don't have time for yourself? Consider how much time you spend pointlessly scrolling or watching your favorite TV shows. Add a facial, a foot soak, some stretching or even exercise. Simple acts of self-care can go a long way to boost your overall health. SAGITTARIUS What's your body language like when you're with the people closest to you? Does it communicate respect and love, or are you reserving all of your reverence for authority figures and strangers? Stay focused on what's most important. You won’t regret it. CAPRICORN Where's your sense of humor these days? The moment you start taking yourself too seriously, life gets a lot more challenging. Try laughing off some of the stuff that's been bothersome lately. Beware of major changes at work. AQUARIUS Are you putting in the time in your relationships or do you let others do the work? Remember that all healthy relationships require effort from both parties. This goes for your love life as well. Don't let being "busy" eat up what you value most in life. PISCES Do you tend to kick the can down the road? True maturity means owning up to your actions. A nearby Libra wants to talk to you. Take the time to hear what they have to say. savannah.com
HOROSCOPE
August 2019
ARIES Let your imagination run wild. What does your future look like? Head in that direction and don’t let anyone or anything hold you back. Living your best life is a challenge, but there’s nothing more exciting to work toward this month. TAURUS Watch out for the reel in your head. Is it mostly positive or negative? Work on replacing the thoughts that weigh you down with happier thoughts or affirmations. Then practice pushing the reel aside and staying present. GEMINI Recently, you started down a path toward growth. Keep working at it, and eventually you will hit on the program or mindset that's best for you. Even if it’s just another step to your next path, your daily life will see dramatic changes. CANCER Your time is being devoured by an unseen predator: the needs of others. If it’s not urgent, move it down the list where it belongs. Set priorities and don’t be afraid to get your own stuff done first. LEO Take stock of how well you are (or aren't) treating your body. Make an effort to eat and drink healthier this month and to keep your body moving. There is something for you at work that you’re missing. Sniff it out. VIRGO This month, you may find yourself wondering just what it is you contribute to the world at large. Look for areas where you could do good work. Open your heart to people around you, and you will start to see love everywhere. savannah.com
LIBRA You complain of not having enough time for everything. There is time, but you've got to work on your prioritization skills. Go to bed at a decent hour, and wake up earlier. An entire hour with a fresh brain and no distractions could lead to some big changes at work and at home. SCORPIO We hear a lot about taking deep breaths to calm down, but breathing deeply can do so much more. It improves circulation, alleviates stress, lowers your blood pressure and can even improve confidence. When you’re overloaded, remember to breathe. You’ll feel your stress start to melt away. SAGITTARIUS Beware of promises made by a silver-tongued Gemini this month. Don’t be afraid to take a risk at work. Take a break from your phone whenever possible, and experience a sense of peace. CAPRICORN Don’t be overly focused on money. If you're too busy thinking about it to enjoy your life, it can become a trap. Take the time to get to know someone at work better this month. You’ll be glad you did. AQUARIUS You're holding on to something that's eating you up. Find a way to let it go. Rekindle your connection with loved ones you hold dear. They will be happy to know that you care. PISCES This month may pose some challenges in your love life. Listen to what your loved one is trying to tell you. Paying attention to your partner will do wonders. July-August 2019 Savannah Scene 57
