From the helm This month I am excited to share a special announcement! Welcome to the first combined edition of Cruise News & Ahoy Magazine! If you haven’t already heard the news, I am very excited to announce the acquisition of the Down Under Rally from its founder, John Hembrow. This exciting development marks a significant expansion for Island Cruising and reinforces its commitment to providing exceptional yacht rallies in Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific. The Down Under Rally was founded by John Hembrow in 2015. Since then, John, with the assistance of his wife, Leanne, have run a variety of yacht rallies & events both within Australia and the South Pacific. During this time, the Down Under Rally has provided the owners of cruising yachts with the opportunity to experience the cruising grounds of this beautiful part of the world, connect with the people of these locations and experience their unique cultures all in the company of likeminded individuals. As well as offering opportunities for Australian sailors to voyage to the South Pacific from Australia with the Go East Rally and NC2V Rally and, more recently, within Australia as part of the Beyond The Barrier Rally,

the Down Under Rally's highly acclaimed Go West Rally encourages international cruisers to sail to Australia from the South Pacific and spend cyclone season enjoying the Australian hospitality whilst cruising the East Coast of Australia. Most Go West Rally participants also take this opportunity to carry out maintenance to their vessels in readiness for their onward voyages into Asia and beyond. With the acquisition of The Down Under Rally, Island Cruising is poised to further enhance the connection between Australian and New Zealand cruisers and to bring some fresh ideas and energy to the rallies that both companies offer. Viki Moore, the owner and visionary behind Island Cruising, has expressed her enthusiasm for this strategic acquisition. She stated, “We are thrilled to welcome the Down Under Rally members and supporters into the Island Cruising community. John & Leanne have done an outstanding job of creating and growing the Down Under Rally, and we are committed to building on their legacy by continuing to offer sailors unforgettable experiences in the South Pacific.” John & Leanne Hembrow would like to take this opportunity to express their gratitude to all those who have supported the Down Under Rally since its inception by either becoming a partner business, participating in a yacht rally, or becoming a Down Under Rally Member.

John had this to say when asked what the future holds in store: “The future for me personally is uncertain at this time, but I can say with certainty that creating and running The Down Under Rally has been the most personally rewarding experience of my career. I am very proud of the achievements of the Down Under Rally over the past few years. The memories and the many friendships that I have made along the way are very precious to me. I am also confident that the combination of both Island Cruising & Down Under Rally will bring some great benefits to all our existing members and partner businesses. This is a positive step forward for both businesses, and I look forward to seeing the Down Under Rally flourish under Viki Moore’s leadership”. Island Cruising has been running yacht rallies for over thirty years, and Moore is the fifth owner of the business. Island Cruising NZ is renowned for its passion for cruising and promoting yachting tourism in the South Pacific in a sustainable way. “We aim to foster ongoing relationships with the communities we visit, educating sailors on how to be culturally sensitive and being aware of and reducing the impact we have on the environment,” Moore says. The company operates with a strong commitment to safety, camaraderie and sustainable practices in the Maritime Industry, and their efforts in this sphere have recently been officially recognised, with a Yachting New Zealand Excellence award as well as Best Yacht Rally 2023 in the Global Nautical Tourism Awards. The acquisition of the Down Under Rally is the beginning of a new and exciting phase for both companies. Island Cruising is looking forward to the opportunity to build on the solid foundation that John & Leanne Hembrow have established over the last 8 years. --I am super excited about the future of the combined Island Cruising and Down Under Rally along with all the fantastic added benefits and opportunities this will bring for our members, partner businesses and rally participants. It will make cruising in the South Pacific a seamless & supported sailing experience for our members and rally participants We have just launched a new website with some exciting new features for members including our combined online learning content, great discounts and of course some fantastic opportunities for our rallies going forward. I look forward to sharing all these with you as things progress. I look forward to connecting with all the Down Under Rally Business Partners and members soon. Thank you for all your support to date. Happy sailing!

Cheers Viki

Pacific Rally Wrap Up

I want to sincerely thank everyone who participated in the rally this year for really embracing the rally spirit of paying it forward, doing good things, and taking care of each other. There have been some incredible acts of kindness going on - and I am sure many more things that I am not privy to as well. It has been incredibly heartwarming and an amazing experience to be a part of. To all our wonderful rally returnees - it was awesome to see so many of the 2022 Cohort again and I really valued all your expertise and support of the new rally participants. I hope many of you will join us again in 2024. Thanks and welcome to all our International rally participants who joined us in the Islands to sail to our beautiful Aotearoa New Zealand. I hope you enjoy your stay. To everyone who transported Days For Girls kits, Rotary clothes, spare parts, generators, rudders, outboard motors, life rafts, batteries and other amazing acts of boat-part couriering kindness. You guys are awesome. Thank you. Thanks to all the amazing crew who joined the rally boats and to all the boats who gave some new crew the opportunity to get some offshore sailing experience. To the Dr crew on board Sao Nicolau for some squashed fingers medical advice in Minerva, and to the Mari crew for altering course to stand by if required on passage to Minerva. Also, to the crew on Cristina for their fabulous leg stapling surgery when the fish took revenge on the crew member's leg. Thanks to Oceania Medical for the great Cat 1 kits and medical training too - it certainly came in handy. To Dave & Lenny on Perigee for their amazing work with the morning VHF Radio net, particularly pre-departure and in Minerva when the weather (& potential tsunami!) was coming through.

To everyone who asked questions, shared tips, advice, answered questions and contributed in the Rally WhatsApp group and generally supported and encouraged everyone else on this big adventure. Thanks for letting me share your photos of your adventures on Facebook, in the Cruise News magazine and in the NZ Fishing News magazine. Thanks to the 40+ people who took part in the beach clean we did with VEPA in Vava'u and also to all those who did their own beach cleans along the way. Amazing. Congratulations to Geoff on Ariki II and Phil from Shillong for completing their solo voyages. An awesome achievement. I loved seeing all the family boats connecting & supporting each other, and ensuring that all the kids and parents alike on the rally had a wonderful time. Thanks to Grant Sea Flair for all the expert advice he gives me regarding my complicated Immigration questions. To Christine on Sugar Shack for all her hard work updating the Compendiums, and to everyone who sent me new content for the Rally Guide books. David, Christine & Sonya in particular, you guys are fantastic I really appreciate your input. Special thanks to David & Karen on In Recess for having me on board to sail with them from Tonga to Fiji. Also to the Whichway crew who also hosted me for a night and Terence on Elektra for having my friends and I to race on board during Regatta week. I've loved spending time with you all. To Tim & Gail on Adrianna for their awesome volunteering work in Vanuatu with the school that they were helping to rebuild. To Adrian & Tasi on Quoi de Neuf for being great fun on the dancefloor and to everyone else who enjoyed the music and entertainment at Mango & Musket Cove Regatta week.

To Paul on Riverwind who, whenever I saw him, was in the dinghy with a bag of tools helping rally participants and the locals fix their boats. You're amazing! I am so very grateful to everyone who reached out to each other when times were tough. Especially Terence, Jane and everyone who was involved in the sad incident at Musket Cove. Thank you for stepping up to support that family in their time of need. Big hugs to those who met the Second Life crew on their travels. Also, to everyone who kindly wrapped around to support the Mintaka, Passion IV & Shillong crews during their tough times too. Special note needs to be made to David & Wendy on Seeka who demonstrated huge bravery for rescuing the crew of TiAma at night in extremely challenging conditions when she was sadly wrecked on an unmarked reef. Thanks too to Horizon for hosting the ship wreck victims on board as well. Also to Mike, Jeanette and their crew on Kuia for firstly donating fuel to a boat in need in the middle of the Pacific ocean, and then also turned back without hesitation in some awful weather to stand by when Miss Kathleen when they were having issues. Auckland Boat Show The Auckland Boat Show will return in 2024, bringing a festival on the water to the heart of central Auckland. The Auckland Boat Show fills downtown Auckland with marinas showcasing the best of New Zealand-built boats and the latest international innovations in marine. An integral part of Auckland’s Moana Festival, the Auckland Boat Show is New Zealand’s largest boat show and the place to see the latest in sail yachts, the commercial marine sector, parts and accesso-ries, and luxury motor yachts for an immersive marine experience. Taking place from 14th-17th March, 2024’s show promises to be a celebration of summer, as one of the biggest editions ever held gets underway at the Viaduct Events Centre and Jellicoe Harbour, for-merly the America’s Cup team bases. The Auckland Boat Show is known for its unique sea trial area; the only one of its kind in a New Zea-land boat show, sea trials form a crucial component of the event. With the show set in the Waitematā Harbour, manufacturers and brokers are able to demonstrate vessels in their element to buyers, al-lowing them to bring performance, sea-kindliness and handling to the forefront. “With the show staged during daylight savings, in New Zealand’s beautiful summer weather, gives us the chance to highlight the best of the New Zealand marine industry on the water,” says show organiser, Stacey Cook. www.auckland-boatshow.com

2-3 MARCH 2024 The Auckland Wooden Boat Festival is coming to life! From 1-3 March 2024 a festival celebrating Auckland’s maritime heritage will be held for the first time on the waterfront. “Wooden boats are in our DNA,” says founder of the event, Tony Stevenson. “We are an island nation, connected by waterways and boats are truly integral to our way of life. Wooden boats are that connection back to our heritage.” The inaugural Auckland Wooden Boat Festival is part of the Moana Ocean Festival, organised by members of the Tino Rawa Trust and the Classic Yacht Association with the support of Tātaki Unlimited, the New Zealand Maritime Museum and Eke Panuku to tell the story of Auckland’s maritime history from early Māori times through to today. From its festival village in Wynyard Quarter, it will offer up timeless activities like sail making, boat building, trysailing sessions, seminars and films, and an astounding display of more than 100 boats. “Each of these boats has an inter-generational story to tell. They were handcrafted in a time when we still made things with our hands. Some carried across oceans, some were traders serving communities up and down our coasts. They were our transport and our recreation,” says Stevenson. Auckland has one of the largest active classic fleets in the world but until now has never had its own major wooden boat festival. “Many of these boats are 100 years old or more. They have survived wars, depression, celebrations, anniversaries, disrepair and thankfully, restoration,” says Stevenson. “This festival is a celebration of the boats, their custodians, skilled craftsman, sailors and enthusiasts who laid the foundation of New Zealand’s maritime tradition, and the generations that followed them.” He says the Auckland Wooden Boat Festival is also an opportunity to reflect on how far New Zealand has advanced. “So often we are ahead of our time, in design, technology, sailing and even socially. This is a chance to showcase these historical and contemporary stories.” We are calling for Expressions of interest from boat owners or to learn more and stay up to date with the festival development visit www.aucklandwoodenboatfestival.co.nz – or look it up on Facebook/Instagram. With a shallow draft and modest wetted area the hulls reward owners with slippery fuel-efficiency - the fine bows slide through the water with an easy motion. The easy motion is aided by a long waterline. Designed with plumb bows and long boarding platforms aft, the LWL is just shy of the 13m LOA. Each hull carries hard chines just above the waterline. This extra width creates more volume for accommodation inside, and also improves buoyancy in less than ideal sea conditions. Where many cats have their engines located in the stern, the 43's are mounted further forward - a happier weight distribution to minimise porpoising or 'hobby-horsing'. LightHouse update further enhances Raymarine’s revolutionary new performance sailing solution Raymarine’s new LightHouse 4.5 update is packed full of sophisticated new sailing features designed to work with the company’s recently-released, DAME award winning Alpha Series displays, Smart Wind Technology and RSW Series Wind sensors. Specifically created to enhance skippers’ understanding of their surrounding environment, the new LightHouse 4.5’s sailing features vastly improve both the tactical awareness and decision making of both club racers and cruising sailors. The new sailing features include: Steer to Wind from Axiom, Automatic Speed Calibration, Wind Shift Indicators, Sail Recommendations and an enhanced Sailing Simulator. The Steer to Wind from Axiom feature uses the Axiom’s built-in autopilot controls to offer two new sailing steering options: Steer to Wind Angle (which holds the boat at the preferred angle to the wind, using live data from the boat’s wind transducer) and Steer to Target Angle (which holds the boat at the target angle to the wind, based on the polar information uploaded into Axiom). LightHouse 4.5’s Automatic Speed Calibration is a sophisticated patented algorithm that removes the tack to tack, heel and linearity errors in a speed transducer, ensuring skippers always get good True Wind data. The update’s new Wind Shift Indicators are available as a horizontal bar display on the chart, or as sidebar data, floating data or as a Dashboard data item. Linked to the value found in the laylines settings in the Chart app and with adjustable averaging time, the information is broadcast across the network to all Alpha instruments. The new Sail Recommendations feature allows skippers to import a sail plan and let Axiom make automatic recommendations based on the wind conditions (eg: which jib to set and whether to add a reef or two). Developed for cruising catamarans, charter boats, boat clubs and other situations where an inexperienced captain might benefit from advice on sail selection and reefing, the recommendations appear as a programmable data item and exceeding the recommended limits prompts an on-screen warning. Enhancements to LightHouse’s popular sailing simulator mean the simulated wind now always blows from the same direction and the simulated boat now automatically follows the laylines. There is now a single Tack Boat command to execute a tack manoeuvre and data is now synchronized to show the integration across the Chart app, Dashboard app and connected Alpha displays with realistic values. The latest 4.5 update to Raymarine’s LightHouse operating system is now available and free to download using the Axiom’s software update feature or from http://www.raymarine.eu/multifunction-displays/lighthouse3/. Product and dealer information is available from Lusty and Blundell on (09) 415-8303 or at www.lusty-blundell.co.nz.

Raymarine’s new Alpha Series wins prestigious DAME award Raymarine’s recently released Alpha Series performance displays have won the coveted Navigation and Communication category of the 2023 DAME Awards at the METSTRADE industry show in Amsterdam. Designed for sailors, by sailors, the Alpha Series take tactical and situational awareness to a new level. Providing fully customisable and extensive data and graphical information, the high-visibility touchscreen Alpha Series displays are designed to be read quickly, accurately and at distance. Optimised for helm or mast mounting, they highly visible in a wide range of light and spray scenarios, and through polarised sunglasses. Controlled and customised using the touchscreen or remotely through a networked Raymarine Axiom chartplotter, they are available in both 7" and 9" display sizes, can be helm- or mast-mounted in either portrait or landscape view and only require a single cable for data and power. Mark Milburn, managing director at Lusty & Blundell, New Zealand’s long-time Raymarine distributor, says the DAME Award is well deserved. “The Alpha performance displays are so much more than just sailing instruments,” he says. “As part of a Raymarine Axiom network, these attractive displays have been designed to be configured into a hugely powerful performance sailing, navigation and engine data system.” The DAME award win is the second in consecutive years for Raymarine with the company’s YachtSense 4G Link router winning the Marine Electronics and Marine Related Software category in 2022.

Major yacht builder partners with Raymarine World-leading marine electronics manufacture Raymarine has signed an OEM supply contract with HanseYachts, the world’s second largest builder of sailing yachts.

Combining Raymarine’s clever new Alpha Series display, Smart Wind Technology and RSW Series Wind sensors, with performance sailing upgrades to the company’s popular LightHouse operating system for Axiom chartplotters, the new system revolutionises tactical awareness and decision making for both club racers and cruising sailors. Available in 7- and 9-inch, high-visibility tactical touchscreen models, the new Alpha Series displays feature a fully customisable dashboard and graphic displays and are designed for either helm or mast mounting in either a portrait or landscape configuration. They are controlled and customised via their touchscreens or remotely from a Raymarine Axiom chartplotter. Incorporating Raymarine's groundbreaking new Smart Wind Technology, the newly designed RSW Series Wind sensors are intelligent self-calibrating sensors that offer a new level of sailing intelligence. A result of Raymarine’s 40-years of sailing instrument experience and combined with a 3D motion sensor, they deliver fast, ultra-precise wind speed and direction measurements, allowing sailors to take advantage of advanced wind, speed and polar calculations to make smarter race and performance sailing decisions when they matter most. Mark Milburn, managing director of Raymarine distributor, Lusty & Blundell Ltd says he is excited to have these new sailing systems now available in New Zealand. “This is an incredibly powerful combination of electronic charting, next-generation precision wind monitoring and touchscreen tactical displays that hugely enhances skippers’ understanding of their surrounding environment. “This breakthrough technology enables sailors to makes smarter, quicker decisions, both when racing or when simply looking for the fastest, easiest route to their next anchorage.” Raymarine’s exciting new Performance Sailing products are now available through Lusty and Blundell’s nationwide network of leading marine dealers and at their three showrooms in Albany, Whangarei and Tauranga. Fiji Visitors Guide to the Sevusevu Ceremony There is nothing that captures the essence of Fijian culture better than the ‘sevusevu’. Many guides will give you a brief overview of this important ceremony, describing it as a lot of talking, a little shouting, and many claps at seemingly random times to quote one particularly offensive guide that shall remain nameless! We, however, feel that you should be fully aware of the significance of what is going on around you and will attempt to give you a more detailed understanding so that you are able to thoroughly enjoy this experience. There is perhaps nothing that captures the essence of Fijian culture better than the ‘sevusevu’. It is the central component of all life-cycle rituals, social gatherings, healing ceremonies and community meetings. "In more formal settings, you will witness the complete performance where each male from the village has a specific role to play. Traditional attire is worn with pride, collected rainwater is poured from bamboo shafts, pounded kava is strained through hibiscus bark and each bilo is delivered deliberately and seriously in absolute silence (aside from the sound of deep ‘Cobo’ claps in acceptance and thanks of each ‘bilo’)"

Significant and ancient in Fiji, the “sevusevu” also marks the time and place for visitors (you) to seek acceptance into a Fijian village. A half-kilo bundle of waka is the appropriate (and required – you should never show up in a village without it!) offering, and this should cost you in the region of FJ$25. When you arrive at a village, you should ask for the ‘Turaga ni Koro’ (pronounced too-ranga nee koro), who is the appointed village headman. It is his duty to greet you and ascertain your intentions before presenting you and your gift to his chiefs and village elder. Everyone participating in the ceremony should be dressed accordingly in a sulu. Women are also expected to have their shoulders covered, and everything should be removed from your head (for example, hat, sunglasses). A small chant performed by the Turaga ni Koro at the doorstep of either a house or village hall signals your presence and intention to the people waiting inside. A reciprocal chant from those inside invites you to enter.

Fiji Visitors Guide to the Sevusevu Ceremony You will be shown where to sit on the woven mat (remember to remove your shoes). Men should sit crosslegged (ensuring the sulu covers your knees) while women sit with knees and feet together, resting on the floor to whichever side is most comfortable. Silence at this point is the key. The Turaga ni Koro will approach the Chief on his knees to place your bundle of yaqona in front of him, staying low as he does so. He will cobo three times, which in Fijian culture means, “I am about to speak, thank you for listening while I do”. It is inappropriate to take photographs or video footage throughout the ceremony (the Turaga ni Koro will usually indicate the appropriate time for you to start snapping once all the formalities are out the way). He will then begin reciting the traditional monologue, which differs slightly throughout Fiji, but essentially means the same thing. This will end with a chant, coupled with three more cobos that indicate they have completed their introduction. In a formal yaqona ceremony, authority is given by the village spokesman to begin mixing the yaqona. In a ceremonial setting, every movement involving the mixing is significant. In the old days, the dried roots were cut into being added to the tanoa with water.

small pieces and chewed to soften them, before

These days fortunately, chewing has become unnecessary, with the pieces now pounded to a fine powder form before being mixed with water and filtered through a silk cloth, or for more formal situations, through hibiscus fibres. The man in charge of preparing the kava will cobo and recite the words ‘I will respectfully mix the yaqona for the Chieftain’, in the local dialect When the yaqona has been prepared, and the consistency approved by the chief’s spokesman, the ‘mixer’ puts his hands together and circles the Tanoa with his hands, saying “With respect to the chiefs, yaqona is ready to drink”. Then he cups his hands, cobo three times and begins to serve the yaqona in a Bilo. This will be carefully taken to the chief in his own, personal bilo. The chief will receive your offering by cupping his hands and clapping with a deep, dignified sound. As he is drinking everyone will clap in slow time, and when he is finished the herald will exclaim “Maca” (which means ‘empty’, and everybody present should cobo three times. The same will be repeated for the herald, but all will cobo only twice when he is finished. For a time this process will be repeated until the tanoa is empty, at which point the mixer announces “the bowl is empty my chief’, and everyone cobos. The mixer then runs both hands around the bowl and cobos three times which terminates the formal part of the ceremony. A second tanoa is then prepared from which everyone will drink. A server will carry a bilo to the chief guest (you), who must cobo once before and three times after completely drinking the first cup. The order of serving depends on the status of those present, from the highest-ranking, down (sorry ladies, but women will usually go last in this patriarchal society!).

Fiji Visitors Guide to the Sevusevu Ceremony After the first ‘round’ is complete and everyone has drunk, the ceremony relaxes and the drinking session will continue along with the telling of many stories. You are likely to be asked to introduce yourself and talanoa about your travels. Remember that this is just a guide, and that kava ceremonies can vary from one village to the next, with each maintaining their own unique features of an ageold tradition. There is another world of social ‘grog’ drinking among younger people or in more urbanized areas. These sessions will usually see you drinking yaqona out if a brightly coloured plastic tea cup, from a laundry bucket! But…. we won’t go into that as we figure, if you have been invited to one of those, you can handle yourself!

WHALES OF THE WHITSUNDAYS Coral Sea Marina supports the region’s bid for Whale Heritage Site certification. The World Cetacean Alliance has developed a program to formally recognize and accredit destinations across the globe to become Whale Heritage Sites. The initiative certifies destinations that support and demonstrate the importance of cetaceans (whales and dolphins) in their ocean habitats. The Whitsundays is currently a candidate site for this accreditation and if successful the region will become the first Whale Heritage Site in a World Heritage Area (the Great Barrier Reef). As well as playing an active role on the steering committee for the Whitsunday Whale Heritage Site application, the team at Coral Sea Marina has taken its support one step further by becoming a Platinum Sponsor for the program. Olivia Brodhurst, Chair of the Whales of Whitsunday Steering Committee explains “As one of our sponsors Coral Sea Marina joins this extraordinary journey, and through their dedication we are committing to help preserve and celebrate the wonders of our Whitsundays’ Whales.” The Whitsundays are striving to become the World’s first Whale Heritage Site within a World Heritage Area. The Whales of the Whitsundays committee’s commitment to preserving and respecting this critical birthing habitat is unwavering, ensuring that generations to come can marvel at the beauty and grace of humpback whales in their most vulnerable and intimate moments.

Ms. Brodhurst continues “Our sponsors make these awe-inspiring moments possible, fostering a deep connection between nature, those who seek unforgettable marine experiences and the historical deep First Nations cultural connections of the land and sea country of the oldest culture on Earth.” The shallow protected waters of the Whitsunday Islands are a unique haven where these majestic marine giants choose to bring new life into the world. These shallow waters create the perfect nursery to cradle the precious moments of birth for the humpback whales, traveling thousands of kilometres to the heart of the Great Barrier Reef for this captivating natural spectacle to unfold. Joscelyn O’Keefe, Head of Marketing & Business Development explains the reason for the marina’s support of this Whale Heritage Site program application, “Many of our marina guests and visitors come to the Whitsundays purely to experience the natural wonders of the ocean. Seeing the majestic Humpback whales nurture their young through the warm water of the Whitsundays is a truly a life-changing experience and one which will remain with you forever.” “We feel strongly that the region attaining the Whale Heritage Site accreditation will benefit not only the animals themselves but also will continue to provide further opportunities for visitors to enjoy them sustainably in their natural environment.” Whale Heritage Sites are incredibly vital to encouraging human-cetacean coexistence and the program promotes responsible whale watching giving people the opportunity to enjoy these majestic creatures in their natural environment knowing the negative impacts on animals are being minimized and mitigated.
