Vizslas in the Great Outdoors

We are simply thrilled to bring you our tenth (10!) Fabulous Fall edition of Island Dog, and so very grateful to you, dear doggie enthusiasts, for making it possible! Our lovely cover shot taken by Keri Nakahashi is of the even lovelier Eevee, while your photos of your loved ones fill our Da Kine Canine Gallery with an array of pups playing cute for the camera. Well, except for Wanda, who’s sticking her tongue out. Our second gallery features “Dogs in the Great Outdoors,” and they really are great! Lucky we live da kine, yeah? Next up is “All Dressed Up” so email us those costume shots of Halloween, holidays, birthdays, football, etc. to share with our dogadoring readers. Then Dr. John Kaya tells the tale of a pup who likes licking Bufos, risking seizures and even death to get high. Stephanie Ryan expounds upon the mission and goals of the Oahu SPCA. And our 2017 Oahu Pet Services Directory will help you find folks who’ll walk, sit, board, train, trim and otherwise pamper your precious pet. Be sure to check our coming events page for a whole slew of dog friendly events—more than any other season! Finally, our fall ends with a flourish as resident artists Dan Van Zyle and John Pritchett elucidate the charms and competency of the Toy Fox Terrier and the Quintessential Canine, respectively. As always, mahalo for the kindness of your attention in this most digital of ages. And for your support of our advertisers and letting them know you read our little dog rag. It helps! 16  ISLAND DOG MAGAZINE • FALL 2017

rowing up I always dreamed of having a Sheltie (short for Shetland Sheepdog), but It took almost two years for my boyfriend and I to find one! It happened at the Hawaii Pet Expo in May of 2015. We finally found the Shetland Sheepdogs of Hawaii booth, and I could barely hold in my excitement. A member gave us some background info, and the pros and cons to having one. Thanks to him, we were contacted by a breeder. In October our baby was on a plane heading from Hilo. When we laid eyes on our little girl, it was love at first sight. She was perfect! Coming up with a name for her was a bit challenging. I was reading names off of websites All we need and I ...came across the is each

name Eevie, when my boyfriend realized that a Sheltie resembled a Pokémon named Eevee. That was it. Eevee comes along almost everywhere. She's very friendly, but not your typical guard dog. She’ll welcome anyone who comes near, human or animal. She’ll love you no matter what. She enjoys car rides and runs to the door once she hears your keys jingle. When the door leading into the garage was left open and Eevee noticed the car door was ajar, she hopped right in and made

other.

herself comfortable. Eevee also enjoys going on long walks. If it’s too short, she’ll pull you to go further just so she won’t have to go back into the house. We discovered while watering that Eevee likes to get misted. She gets so excited that she runs and jumps around trying to catch drops. And she’s good at playing hide and seek— searching high and low, tip-toeing until she senses that you’re near. And then, “Boo!” she barks and sprints away to play again. Eevee is such a wonderful blessing on my crazy roller coaster ride. And if I could, I’d choose her each time to be by my side through this journey we call life. — Courtney Rosete

In Hawaii, we have the pleasure of experiencing an average of 271 days of sunny weather but on occasion it does rain. Rain is good. It helps to keep our paradise lush and beautiful. But also with the rain comes an unwelcome visitor—Bufo marinus: aka the Bufo toad. The problem with the Bufo toad is that the toxin in its skin is very poisonous. If you were to lick this toad, you may experience tremors and an irregular heart beat before being carried off for psychological evaluation. I mean, who licks toads? Actually dogs do. This is a story about a repeat offender who never learned his lesson. Or did he? Max, a 3 year old Jack Russell Terrier was rushed into our hospital one night for an emergency. His owner, Mrs. Smith, said she saw Max go after a toad in the bushes. When he came out, he was drooling, foaming, and frantically pawing at his mouth. “I picked him up and rushed him to the water hose. Someone once told me that if Max ever bit a toad, I needed to wash his mouth with water,” an exasperated Mrs. Smith related. “Is he going to be alright Doc?” “I think so. Except for his muscle tremors he seems stable. We’re going to take him in the back and continue to rinse his mouth with water. We’ll also give him an injection to P HN JO calm him down and reduce the chance of any seizures.” I explained. I think the word seizures took Mrs. Smith by surprise. I looked into her eyes and calmly said, “Don’t worry 40  ISLAND DOG MAGAZINE • FALL 2017

Beware the Bufo

ISTOCKPHOTO

Mrs. Smith. By doing what you did, you saved Max’s life.” We kept Max overnight at the hospital for observation and discharged him the next morning. I would like to say that Max learned his lesson and avoided toads from then on but, well, he’s a Jack Russell Terrier. And they can’t help but chase down small vermin and put them in their mouths. Over the next couple of months Max returned to our clinic two more times for his newly discovered treacherous pastime. Each time, Mrs. Smith washed his mouth out with water and rushed him in. “Why is he doing this Doc? I mean, he knows what will happen when he bites the toad and he still does it.” With a quizzical expression Mrs. Smith continued, “This may sound weird but sometimes I think he actually likes it. Could that be possible?” At the time I chuckled at her comment. Since then however, a colleague told me of a report about dogs licking toads and “tripping-out” in their own back yard. What if Max was doing the same thing? I guess it wouldn’t be all that different from having a couple of beers or a glass of wine after a hard day at work. Well, except for the possibility of dying that is. To Max’s displeasure, the Smith family rounded up all the toads in the yard and relocated them to a peaceful spot where no dogs could be harmed. Just in case, I also asked them to remove any funny looking mushrooms that they came across. After all, I didn’t want Max to be tempted.

Bufo marinus aka Bufo toad, Cane toad, Marine toad or Giant toad. The Bufo was originally introduced to reduce sugar cane beetle infestations in the early 1930s. It rapidly spread and is now a pervasive presence on all the islands. This hefty creature with warty skin, bony head and ridged eyes measures 4-6" long. Active at night, it sits upright and moves quickly in rapid hops. A dog may ingest toxin from a curious lick or playful bite on Bufo’s parotid glands on the side of the head. If swallowed, the thick, whitish secretion can cause drooling, shaking of the head, clenched jaw, heart arrhythmias and even death. Severity of symptoms depends on the amount of toxin ingested and length of time since exposure. First Aid Take immediate action by flushing the dog’s mouth with water, keeping the nose pointed downward and a steady stream directed out of the mouth. Do not let your dog swallow the water. Rinse and repeat. Wash your hands thoroughly after handling. Seek prompt veterinary help. Prevention Supervise dog play outdoors. Round up and relocate Bufos.

Websites and social media can provide insight into business philosophy. Mention any special needs your dog may have. Ask for references. If applicable ask if licensed, bonded and insured, and about contingency plans in case of emergency or natural disaster. As a new client, it may take a little time to get an account or schedule set up so don’t wait until the last minute. Pet care services can book up quickly, especially during busy holiday seasons. The Oahu Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was founded in 2009 in order to carry out an emergency rescue of 432 animals that were in desperate need of care on a farm in Waianae. More than 500 volunteers came together to help the dogs, cats, chickens, rabbits and birds. To date this marks the largest animal rescue in Hawaii. Since then, Oahu SPCA has rescued more than ten thousand animals of all By Stephanie Ryan, President OSPCA kinds and remains committed to a strict no-kill promise. Our mission to save lives relies on our committed staff, volunteers and the financial support of the public. One of our most rewarding moments happened recently when we found a forever home for Pirate after a wait of seven long years. Pirate was rescued in February of 2010, given veterinary care, socialized, taken for walks, hikes and given a lot of love. Pirate never lost hope and neither did we. It's stories like this that keep Oahu SPCA focused on our mission to make life better for all animals. We’ve made tremendous progress by establishing a shelter and a low cost spay/neuter and wellness clinic in Wahiawa. We offer vaccines, microchips and other services. Our Petco clinics all over Hawaii have made veterinary care affordable and accessible to thousands of animals and pet owners. Proceeds of our clinic services are used to help our rescued animals. The Oahu SPCA clinic serves more than 13,000 families each year. Approximately 37% of the families we support are low-income and homeless. Planning Ahead for Your Pet’s Safety Hurricane season runs from June through the end of November, so be sure to have your Emergency Pet Supply kit ready.
