Aloha We have fallen in love with Fall, Y’all! You will too, once you peruse this 47th edition of your favorite local dog rag—so much fun is packed into three months! It starts with our lovely Cover Girl, Sasha, who’s always ready to get out and seek adventures. There’s a companion story by Wendi Lau on safe trekking with your pup, including suggested trails. A must read, and maybe just the nudge you need. Our 3rd Annual O‘ahu Pet Services Directory lists all the places we could find to have your 4LBFF trained, boarded, walked, pampered and more. Look for the highlighted entries—our advertisers. They’re great folks! Fab Fall rates a coming events listing because: The SurFur Competition! The K-9 and Keiki Carnival! Dog Day Afternoon! Celebrities and Their Pets Fashion Show! And the 28th Annual Pet Walk Paina at a new location! We are panting with anticipation. Dr. Nathaniel Lam of VCA’s Oahu Veterinary Specialty Center contributes his insights on Canine Hip Dysplasia (CHD in the vet vernacular), complete with X-Rays rated PG-13, and the methods used to treat it. Meanwhile, on the other end of your dog, we offer tips on cleaning ears. Doing a sniff test will tell you if trouble is brewing. A really rocking Da Kine Canine Photo Gallery and an awesome Dogs in the Great Outdoors gallery provide a sumptuous dog-ogling opportunity. Next up is All Dressed Up, so send in those Halloween Pics. Plus birthdays, Christmas, Sports, and just plain silly! And now more than just dog-ogle, you can dog-paint! And drink! Wine! At Painting with a Twist on Ward Avenue, a staff artist will pre-sketch your pup’s face on a canvas that will be waiting for your arrival. Just send ’em a photo with your reservation and unleash your inner Cézanne! All this, plus resident artists Dan Van Zyle and John Pritchett use their wits and palettes to opine upon the Alaskan Malamute and the growing number of dog photographers, respectively. It’s the most fabulous, fur-friendly Fall in memory! As always, dear readers, we are grateful for the kindness of your attention in this most digital of ages, and for your whispering in the ears of our advertisers. They hear you, and then we hear from them. And life is arfully good.

—Woofs and Wags, John & Carol

Sasha is a 6-year old miniature Australian Shepherd. She was born in Santa Barbara California and moved to Oahu with me about two years ago. True to her breed, Sasha is very smart. She loves teaching me all kinds of tricks—she can walk on my feet, jump through a hoop made with my arms, and weave between my legs when I walk. Her favorite past times are swimming, playing frisbee, and hiking all over Oahu. She’s a little shy of new people and absolutely detests fireworks. Once she gets to know you, she is over the top affectionate, and loves a long snuggle session, especially in the morning. She also loves to follow this up with a little taste of my coffee! —Julie Moore

Plus, for us local people, the aluminum body won’t rust in the salt air, and it’s about 700 pounds lighter so we save on da kine registration. Getting Rid of

Ear Gunk Hawaii’s heat and humidity—the perfect breeding ground for bacteria and yeast to grow in your dog’s ears. Add dirt, ear wax and water and your dog is on his way to a full-blown case of stinky ear gunk.

O

ur four-legged friends are susceptible to a variety of outer ear problems classified as otitis externa. Without proper and regular ear cleaning, dirty ears can soon become infected ears. Droopy or thickly furred ears are especially prone to holding in warmth and moisture. With a build up of dirt, ear wax and soap or water, the ear canal becomes an incubator for bacteria and yeast to grow.

Unchecked this can lead to painful, red, inflamed ears. Your dog will be in pain, shaking his head, scratching and may even wince and cry if you touch his ears. If you’ve reached this point, seek veterinary treatment right away. Even before the painful and obviously infected stage you should notice a foul or yeasty odor that signals an ear infection is brewing. If your dog’s ears smell gross, you’re overdue on cleaning.

L-R: Virbac Epi-Otic Advanced Ear Cleaner, Zymox Otic Enzymatic Solution, Pet MD Ear Wipes with Aloe Vera and Eucalyptus and Burt’s Bees Relieving Ear Rinse with Chamomile and Rosemary. These products can be found in local pet stores or veterinary clinics and online.

There are many ear cleaners available over the counter and at your vet’s office. A pet care professional can help with your selection and offer tips on how to flush debris out of the ears. You can also make a home solution mixing a one-to-one ratio of lukewarm water and white vinegar. Working one ear at a time, administer a small amount of solution into the ear. You can also moisten a cotton pad and squeeze out the solution into the ear. Allow it to drip down into the ear canal, then massage the base of ear to loosen up debris. Chances are your dog will do some vigorous head shaking so be prepared when the gunk comes flying out. Wipe out the ears with cotton pads and Q-tips, being careful not to push gunk further down. Be patient and gentle; ear cleaning takes practice. Some pet owners have gotten good results flushing the cleaning solution out of the ear canal with a soft stream

of lukewarm water in a rubber bulb. It can also be used to gently suck out any lingering debris and water. If the ears are really dirty this process may have to repeated. Wait a day or two and repeat. Infected ears that are bleeding, painful, slimy with pus or discharge require veterinary treatment options which may include antibiotic ointments or a single dose in-office treatment. As part of your pet’s hygiene routine, make a habit of checking ears and clean as needed. Do it yourself or schedule it as part of your dog’s regular grooming appointment. How often should you clean? It could be once or twice a month. If your dog spends a lot of time in and out of the pool or ocean check more often. Over cleaning can have negative consequences too, so ask for your vet’s recommendation. FALL 2018• ISLAND DOG MAGAZINE  31

Canine Hip Dysplasia

By Nathaniel Lam, DVM, DACVS

Canine Hip Dysplasia (CHD) is a condition that begins in dogs as they grow and results in instability or looseness (laxity) of the hip joint. Hip joint laxity is responsible for potential clinical signs (symptoms) of hip pain, lameness, and progressive arthritis. The biggest single risk factor for CHD is genetics, although rapid weight gain and growth can increase the risk for development. laxity before 20 weeks of age is the key to preventing cartilage damage from progressive joint laxity.

5 Treatment Options

Recognizing Hip Dysplasia Not all dogs with hip disease show symptoms, but we generally see two groups of dogs with lameness due to hip dysplasia: Younger dogs without arthritis, but significant hip “looseness,” and mature dogs that have developed hip arthritis. Diagnosing Hip Dysplasia A veterinarian will often diagnose looseness of the hips in a young dog by palpating the hip and performing special maneuvers to evaluate for laxity. Combined with survey (OFA) and/or specialized radiographs called PennHIP, the risk for developing CHD can be predicted and the diagnosis discussed. Early recognition of joint 40  ISLAND DOG MAGAZINE • FALL 2018

Maintaining a Lean Body. All dogs with CHD should be kept very slim, from very young to old age. It is the most effective and least expensive long-term method of keeping them as comfortable as possible. Restricting calories by 10-20% and feeding a diet specifically for large or giant breed puppies is recommended. Moderate Activity such as leash walks and swimming. Avoid highimpact activities. Anti-inflammatory and Pain Medications (both pharmaceutical and/or natural) to aid in relief of discomfort associated with hip pain and progressive arthritis. Nutritional Supplements given as injections or orally may improve comfort and joint health. Rehabilitation Therapy involves specific exercises to increase muscle mass around the hip joint to improve

stability, range of motion, and comfort through modalities such as massage, laser therapy, ultrasound, and acupuncture.

In dogs for which early corrective procedures are not an option or have failed to improve the hip conformation, there are two other surgical options. Femoral head and neck ostectomy (FHO) is a procedure involving removal Surgical Management In puppies when the diagnosis of CHD of the ball portion of the joint, allowing is made very early, the surgical options a “false joint” to form in its place. This procedure can be done at any age and to treat it are the least invasive. At 10 relieves discomfort avoiding the need and 18 weeks old, when a puppy is given his shots, he should be examined for long-term medication. However, success with this procedure is highly by the primary care veterinarian for depending on adequate rehabilitation the presence of hip looseness. This is therapy after surgery to avoid especially important in large and giant complications of scar tissue formation breed dogs. and loss of range of motion. In dogs less than 20 weeks of age, Total hip replacement (THR) can be a minimally invasive procedure called used in any dog, eliminates pain, and Juvenile Pubic Symphysiodesis (JPS) allows the most accurate normal hip can be performed to increase the function. The total hip replacement is coverage of the ball by the socket a difficult surgery, and should be only in the hip joint over the following 6 performed by an experienced surgeon months. To be a candidate for the due to the increased risk of serious operation, early diagnosis via palpation complications compared to other or PennHIP is critical. operations. In dogs less than one year old without arthritis, hip laxity can be corrected via Double or Triple Pelvic Osteotomy (DPO/TPO) which is a more invasive but effective surgical procedure that requires cutting the pelvic bone in multiple places and rotating the segment containing the socket over the ball to decrease looseness. Total hip replacement (THR).

Hip dysplasia is a challenging problem, but with early recognition of the condition and recent advances in veterinary medicine and surgery, your pet can have a lifetime of painfree hips! Femoral head and neck ostectomy (FHO) removes the ball portion of the joint. A “false joint” will form in its place.

Websites and social media can provide insight into business philosophy. Mention any special needs your dog may have. Ask for references. If applicable ask if licensed, bonded and insured, and about contingency plans in case of emergency or natural disaster. ainting with a Twist in Honolulu is part of a continuing trend in experiencebased businesses—socializing, relaxing and painting while enjoying a glass of wine. The friendly staff guides you through every step of the predetermined theme for the session. At the end of the class I attended, everyone went home with a 16"x20" acrylic painting of a Hawaii sunset. And I found out one of their most popular classes is “Paint Your Pet.’’ It’s not as scary as it seems for those whose only experience is painting a wall. Participants email a photo of their pet ahead of time which their staff artist will pre-sketch onto a canvas. All other paint materials will be supplied. At the end of your 3-hour $65 session, Next Paint Your Pet: you’ll walk out the door with a custom portrait of Sunday, Sept. 30 your pet that perfectly captures his personality.
