Aloha! Ladies! Gentlemen! Persons of the Canine Persuasion! It gives us great pleasure to bring to you our Fabulous Fall edition of Island Dog Magazine. Enough of the rough stuff – Let us give you the Ruff Stuff! It starts with our Cover Boys Bourbon & Brisket: two Fab Frenchies exposed perfectly by Ashley Smith, photographer fantastique. Our Da Kine Canine gallery is flush with pics of your 4LBFFs! In our Winter issue coming in November, we will be adding a second photo gallery with the “All Dressed Up” theme. So please share shots of your pup in aloha attire, holiday costumes and any other fun fashion they’ll let you put them in. The 2020 Pet Services Directory surprised us, because very few folks went out of business. Please support local if you are able. On a sad note, we say farewell to Eileen Abe of Animal Communicators Hawaii who passed away on March 27, 2020. As a friend and as part of the animal-loving professional community, Eileen will be missed. Pet-pawsitive property manager Lawrence Van Hoey foretells the benefits of allowing pets in your rental, and Stephanie Kendrick forthrightly explains the changes to microchip registering in Hawaii. Find Fido? Yes, probably, if you take these measures. And of course, our Gifts & Sniffs section is full of treats and festive eats. All this, plus resident artists John Pritchett and Dan Van Zyle’s fascination with political animals and cocker spaniels, respectfully, makes for a fine feast of an issue! As always, we are fervently grateful for the faith of your attention in this most digital of ages. And for your farsighted unflagging support for our advertisers, who make this whole thing possible.

ASHLEY SMITH
FALL COVER DOGS
Bourbon & Brisket
B
ASHLEY SMITH
ourbon and Brisket have been the center of my world for the past five years. Brisket (my blue brindle) entered my life at a time when I was feeling lonely. He was my best friend who followed me everywhere and dragged me everywhere he wanted to go. He slept by my side every night and woke me with kisses every morning. A year later, I convinced myself that Brisket needed a buddy so he wouldn’t be alone, so Bourbon (my white/black) came into the equation. And his name came from my love with bourbon whiskey. What better combination than brisket and bourbon right? Living with two French Bulldogs has been a huge learning experience for me. It’s like having two sons, but not actually two sons. Brisket is big on fetch and only loves to fetch. Bourbon loves walks and only loves to walk. But the one common thing they share is chasing lizards and roaches, so I don’t have to worry about bugs in my apartment. When I’m not working as a cook at Heiho House in Kaimuki, we love to lounge around. Maybe I love lounging around more than they do but they follow. When I’m not being lazy, I bring them on hikes or fulfill Brisket’s dream of endless fetch. He’s surprisingly good at catching a Frisbee and that is tough for a Frenchie. One of the greatest joys of living with these boys is the love they show when I come home every night. Brisket always with a Brisket, RJ and Bourbon toy in mouth, and butt wiggling from Bourbon. There’s nothing better than coming home to two loving French bulldogs! 16 ISLAND DOG MAGAZINE • FALL 2020

Planning Ahead for Disaster Preparedness Your Pet’s Safety Hurricane season runs from June through the end of November. In the event of evacuation for a hurricane or other disaster, residents and pets should come prepared with a pet disaster preparedness kit — shelters do not stock supplies.
ISTOCKPHOTO
Where to Shelter According to the Department of Emergency Management, City and County of Honolulu, all Oahu evacuation shelters are considered pet accommodating. Monitor local media and official social media sites for specifics and updates. Based on the type of disaster and other circumstances, not all shelters will be open and facilities other than those listed may be used. Stay informed at: honolulu.gov/DEM, Facebook: @OahuDEM, and Twitter: @Oahu_DEM. Sign up for free alerts to your cell phone and or email account: https://hnl.info/alerts provided by the City and County of Honolulu. Your pet kit should include: • Pet crate or carrier (one for each pet). Pets should be able to sit, stand and turn around comfortably. • Food and Water. A 14 day supply in secure containers. A can opener if needed plus food and water bowls. • Medication/First Aid. Essential meds plus medical/veterinarian information including vaccine records. • Identification. In case of separation, an ID tag on a collar and microchipping assist in recovery. Attach your pet’s photo to the
crate along with name and contact information. Have photos showing unique markings and with the family—prints and on your e-device or smartphone. Useful for confirming ownership. •C ollar and leash/harness with current ID and license tags. •F avorite toys, bedding, treats and towel. Provides familiarity and reduces stress. •H ygiene, grooming and sanitation supplies. Newspaper, litter, plastic bags, wipes, etc. •P et First Aid Kit
During the Covid-19 Pandemic, include cloth face coverings, hand sanitizer, and disinfectant wipes. 34 ISLAND DOG MAGAZINE • FALL 2020

Pet Pawsitive = Net Positive BY LAWRENCE VAN HOEY | HIPRO REALTY LLC
Why choose to have your long term investment property be pet-friendly?
If you own a rental property, now is the time to make it pet- friendly! And having specialized realtor management will ease the headaches and lessen potential legal entanglements.
A pet-friendly property increases the appeal of your rental unit and opens it to a broader market where as many as 60% of Hawaii households have a pet, according to the Hawaiian Humane Society. Plus, you are providing a home for a loved member of a family that might otherwise have to be rehomed or even taken to a shelter. Pet owners tend to have a stable home life, understanding the responsibilities of caring for their animals. It is true, until now, that investment property owners often chose not to be pet friendly with their rental units due to the potential for property damage caused by pet tenants. However, Hawaii recently passed new legislation permitting the use of Pet Deposits, up to 100% of the monthly rent in addition to the regular deposit, so that risk is greatly minimized. An experienced pet-pawsitive property manager will take the additional precaution of securing pet addendums, extra renter’s insurance, and pet rents. All help reduce the risks associated with pets and increase the speed of your return on investment. Pet related repairs is another area where experience counts. While most damage is limited to chewing on furniture and scratching on doors (dogs) and clawing drapes (cats), other problems can crop up. An older pet may have urination problems, so the property can be steam cleaned

and deodorized at the tenant’s expense. Requiring renter’s insurance with a rider including pets will provide coverage in the case of a dog bite, provided that the proper parties are named in the policy. Some dogs experience separation anxiety and bark, and bark, and bark, so referring his owners to a reputable trainer is often the solution. You can update your investment property to a more pet-pawsitive environment. Consider removing carpets and installing tile or hard surface (not laminate) flooring with a higher baseboard. If you have a lanai that is carpeted, change it to hard surface flooring that flows seamlessly with the interior flooring. This type of improvement will also increase the value of the apartment and may help in the selling process down the road.
Due to the recent Covid-19 Pandemic and the unforeseen travel restrictions, we are seeing more and more short term/vacation rental properties entering the long term rental market. Renters for the foreseeable future will have more to choose from when it comes to the availability of units, so comparatives become very important in successfully leasing your property. And having a property manager who can properly screen tenants and provide solutions that diminish or even prevent problems will relieve the stress and worry associated with allowing pets into your precious property.

r e m e m ber ing
We are deeply saddened by the passing our friend Eileen Abe. Eileen was a gentlewoman of the first order: Caring, unassuming, a great listener, helpful, organized, and a superb craftsperson. A retired executive from Zippy’s, she was probably smarter than us too, but she never showed off. Instead, she immersed herself in making remarkable handcrafted products, including lei and haku lei sold at Hawaii Doggie Bakery, and in exploring Animal Communication and Energy Work. We met her in 2013 when we did a story on a Hawaiian Doggie Wedding between her dog Roo and her foster dog Boo. It was a collaboration of local business and pet professionals that benefited Italian Greyhound Rescue Hawaii, and a fine time was had by all! Over the years, we kept in contact and Eileen was a regular at local pet events. She always made time to stop by the Island Dog booth at the Hawaii Pet Expo to give us leis and wish us a Happy Mother's Day. We would find her at special events by Hawaii Lacee
Pet Beat, and Pop Ups at Hawaii Doggie Bakery and The Public Pet. She was also one of the founding members of the Hawaii Pet Business Network in 2016.
Eileen with her beloved Roo.
When she completed her training, she opened Animal Communicators Hawaii and began working with the public. Eileen’s soothing demeanor offered comfort and insights to pet owners, helping to locate lost pets, communicating with ailing pets or those that had passed on. Eileen Abe passed peacefully surrounded by love on March 27, 2020. Aloha. Miso FALL 2020 • ISLAND DOG MAGAZINE 39
Pet Star 2020
A photo capturing a loving moment takes the top spot in the Pet Star Photo Contest Hibik-E, an English Bulldog mixed breed pup nuzzles Bolt-E, an old English Bulldog in the winning shot. Photo by Gina Woo Anonuevo Story by Nancy Bernal
W
hat does it take to be a “Pet Star”? The Pet Hui television show and The Pet Hale store requested photos from pet owners for the second annual “Pet Star Photo Contest” earlier this year hoping to discover the next “Pet Star.” Nearly ninety submissions were received—and every entry looked like a “star”—but which photo presented that cherished special moment in time? And the winner is: A beautiful photo of Bolt-E, an old English Bulldog with Hibik-E, an English Bulldog mixed breed. Both dogs are owned by Gina Woo Anonuevo and Bobby Adams. Gina captured this loving connection between the two dogs with her camera a few years ago when Bolt-E was eight years old and Hibik-E was four months old. She expressed her sentiment about winning, “When you are an animal lover, all animals are wonderful in their own special way. We are

glad that we are able to share the feeling of kindness and love that was captured in this photo with everyone during these most difficult times we are facing with the Corona pandemic.” Gina and Bobby became dog parents to Bolt-E and Hibik-E when both pups were eight weeks old. Bolt-E was born in Australia and Hibik-E was adopted locally in Hawaii. Now weighing in at 58 lbs. and 85 lbs., both of these stocky boys love to sleep. Bolt-E prefers sunbathing and Hibik-E looks forward to couch naps with his Dad. Gina enjoys taking photos of her dogs and features them in personally-created calendars each year and on their Facebook page— Bullybabies Hawaii. In addition to the gratification of winning the “Pet Star Photo Contest,” these two handsome Bulldogs won a photo session package with photographer Lani Sanders of Haute Creatures Pet Photography, a fantastic gift basket from The Pet Hale located in the Mililani Shopping Center and a featured segment on The Pet Hui seen on Spectrum OC16. The 2020 “Pet Star” photo submissions showcased a variety of pets that were very engaging and entertaining. The Pet Hui and The Pet Hale are grateful to every pet parent that participated. There are a few runner-up photos that we would like to recognize. First runner-up is Finn, an English Cocker Spaniel owned by Michelle Ichikawa and Second runner-up is Ghettoruby (a Bully) and Boogie (a Frenchie) owned by Holly Poomaihealani. Congratulations to Bolt-E, Hibik-E, Gina Woo Anonuevo and Bobby Adams on winning the second annual Pet Star Photo Contest!
First Runner-Up: Finn, English Cocker Spaniel. Owner: Michelle Ichikawa.
Second Runner-Up: Boogie, French Bulldog and Ghettoruby, Bully. Owner: Holly Poomaihealani.
For more interesting stories about the animal world, check out The Pet Hui on Spectrum OC16 on Sundays at 9:00 p.m. and throughout the week at various times. For a complete show schedule visit thepethui.com. And for the largest selection of pet products, stop by The Pet Hale in the Mililani Shopping Center (open seven days a week) owned and operated by The Baker Ohana.

Coronavirus Post-Quarantine Life for Dogs
A
n extended time at home means spending more time with our dogs than typical. It’s fair for any good dog owner to have some concerns regarding the changes their dog might experience when we go back to work after the coronavirus quarantine. How may they react to the disappearance of their human for no good dog reason? I get questions regarding “Canine Separation Anxiety” a lot, and the good news is that more often than not, it’s not anxiety at all. The misbehaviors are a result of a frustrated dog that is not getting all of its needs met. For example, maybe you were walking Fido daily and playing with him/her in the yard a lot more than you had prior to the shelter-in-place order. I mean what else was there to do?!?! And now that you have gone back to work (without Fido’s permission, I might add), the amount of weekly interaction with you has drastically decreased, resulting in a frustrated dog with a lot of pent up energy. A solution to this predicament would be to dedicate some time to Fido prior to going into work (Yes, this will require you to get up a little earlier). Give him the chance to burn off some energy before you depart for the day. And perhaps just before leaving, offer Fido a puzzle toy to keep his mind off of the fact that you just went through that same routine you do every day.
You may also notice your dog showing some anxious signals or behaviors while you’re getting ready for work. It’s like they know we’re going to be leaving soon! Dogs are creatures of habit, very much like many of us humans. In addition, they are hyperobservant of patterns, giving them an almost psychic ability to detect future behaviors of animals and humans alike. A suggestion for owners who are experiencing this would be to try mixing up your “Pre-Work” routine. Maybe you pick up your keys and grab your coffee mug right as you get dressed as opposed to right before walking out the door. There are many different methods to treating behavioral disorders related to Post-Quarantine life for dogs and every dog is unique. Give me a call to discuss your specific situation and the behaviors your dog is exhibiting, and we’ll schedule an initial evaluation to design a custom behavior plan for your dog’s specific needs.

ChipIn
By Stephanie Kendrick Public Policy Advocate, Hawaiian Humane Society
Now that the City and County of Honolulu has mandated that all dogs and cats have microchip identification, Hawaiian Humane is hoping more lost animals will quickly find their way home.
H
aving a microchip implanted, however, is just the first step. Until it is registered, a microchip is just a tiny storage unit containing a unique number. For that number to be used to reunite you with your pet, you must register your contact information with the company that manufactured your pet’s microchip or a free online database. If you know your pet has microchip identification, these are important next steps to make sure he or she can find her way home: • If you don’t know the microchip number, veterinary clinics and most animal welfare nonprofits, including the Hawaiian Humane Society, can scan your pet’s microchip and tell you the number. • If you have your pet’s microchip number, but you’re not sure what company manufactured the chip, visit the American Animal Hospital Association’s pet microchip look-up website, www.petmicrochiplookup.org. • If you know your pet’s microchip number and manufacturer, just call or go online and register that chip!

Rakin’ It In FURemover Broom, Pet Hair Removal Broom extends from 3 ft. to 5 ft. with a 12" Natural Rubber Head with rubber bristles and a “squeegee” blade on one side. Perfect for picking up fur, hair, dirt, household debris and fine particles. Although it's called a broom, it really relies on a raking motion to corral debris.
User Tips: We like to flip it over to the blade side and rake the carpet. It even picks up fur in areas we just vacuumed! It also takes some arm power, so if you have delicate shoulders or arthritis, this may not be for you. Order FURemover at Amazon.com.
An Easy Walk in the Park If you have a dog that’s a “puller” consider switching to a harness. Discourages pulling while on a leash... no coughing, gagging or choking! Easy to fit and comfortable to wear. The front-chest leash attachment helps steer your dog to the side and redirects his attention toward you. Put the easy back in your daily dog walks with the Easy Walk Harness by PetSafe. Available at a pet retailer near you.
Taco Tucker Tuesday Cute Snuffle Toy for the dog who loves to sniff and seek. Hide treats within this wellgarnished taco and let the fun begin! From DogNmat on Etsy.com.
