FALL 2021• ISLAND DOG MAGAZINE 13
With both sorrow and joy we note the passing of Lilikoi, the only Cover Girl to grace Island Dog twice. Sorrow for the loss and grief of our friend Kathy and joy for having known the lovable little furball. Rest in peace. Fall won’t fail us this year. No looming election, and though variants arise, we’re much better prepared. We’ll be fine because we value masks and clean hands, social distance, vaccines, and the 4F’s: Family and Fabulous Furry Friends. And so we at Island Dog happily greet the season with wagging tails, especially for our Cover Girl, Lulu Del Rey! She’s a most interesting-looking pup who inspired her humom, Carissa, to put her sewing skills to good use by starting her own company, Isle Style. The ever creative Carissa also shot the cover for us, natch! Not to be outdone, you, dear readers, have bestowed upon us a flurry of photos of your own 4LBFFs to fill our Da Kine Canine Gallery. Be sure to send some additional pics for our Happy Howlidaze special collection—All Dressed Up! Nancy Bernal exposes this year’s winner of The Pet Hui’s Pet Star Photo Contest, and Jessica Tronoski digs into the Hawaiian Humane Society’s exciting Ewa expansion. We highlight The Eddy Project, a fire safety initiative named for a beloved pet who perished in the 2017 Marco Polo blaze. Our new Pet Services Directory showcases the many ways to treat your dog to grooming, walking, day care and much, much more. We come bearing dog park updates, and we remind you of the necessity to prepare for evacuation and in case of an emergency. All this, plus resident artist John Pritchett ruminating on the prone prevaricator, makes for a marvelous missive indeed! As ever, we are deeply indebted to you for the kindness of your attention in this most digital of ages. And for letting our advertisers know that you saw them in our little dog mag—you bark at them and then they bark at us.

he saying, “Time flies when you’re having fun,” takes on a whole new meaning when you have a dog like Lulu Del Rey. It’s hard to believe 8 years have flown by since the day Lulu came into our lives. Let’s just say, it was an adventure from the start.
When my husband and I first adopted Lulu, people tried to warn us that a dog is time-consuming and that our hobbies, travel and lifestyle, wouldn’t be the same with a pet. They were absolutely right, but in the best way ever. Thanks to Lulu, I found my passion for pet fashion. Dressing her in adorable outfits eventually led to me opening a luxury clothing and accessories line for pets, Isle Style. Lulu is the Sea.E.O. of the company, the main model, and inspiration for every piece that’s made. When Lulu isn’t modeling, she’s usually hanging out with her furiends. We’ve met the most amazing pets and people through her Instagram page (@mermaidpup). Having a social dog like Lulu has made me more active, more outgoing, and excited to plan our next adventure. Traveling with Lulu is my favorite thing in the world. She loves to sightsee, go on strolls, dine out, and shop...and so do I. I am beyond grateful for Lulu Del Rey and will continue to cherish our precious moments together. — Carissa Wong

ongratulations to Natalie Chang, whose photo of her five senior Chihuahuas was chosen as The Pet Star Photo Contest Winner - 2021! Over two hundred fantastic photo submissions were received this year. Natalie has a soft spot in her heart for older animals. She rescued three of her dogs from the Hawaiian Humane Society, where she has been a volunteer since 2009, and two from a breeder that wanted to re-home her senior dogs. She expressed her feelings about adopting older dogs, “It’s not about the quantity of time I have with them; it’s the quality.” The five Chihuahuas pictured in the winning photo l-r: Pebbles (16 years old), Manapua (11 years old), Pip Squeak (10 years old), Manju (10 years old) and Mei Mei (10 years old) spread the aloha spirit all over Oahu on their weekly excursions in their stroller. You can keep updated on their adventures by following them on Instagram @alohachihuahuas.

@APetPerspective “A holistic approach to canine behavior”
Case Study: Adopting Agression With so many dogs in need of forever homes, adoption is becoming an increasingly popular way to acquire the furry new addition to your family. Most people imagine walking down rows of dogs with begging eyes and happy-wagging tails to end up with The One! The events of the past year have made this process a bit more challenging. Patients: Peter & Miles—Two male poi dogs. One year old siblings from same litter, rescued from a shelter at 6 months old. Symptoms: Attacking and biting kids, new people, general unpredictable aggression. Bite History: Five bite incidents to children in four months since adoption; escaping from home and going to neighbors to attack children. Diagnosis: We discovered that the two dogs had been rescued from a pack of strays and were kept together as a Bonded Pair (according to the rescue organization). Using Applied/Functional Behavioral Analysis during our initial evaluation and following sessions, we were able to identify a severe Fearful/ Aggressive reaction to children and people, in addition to erratic behaviors. Combined with a Genetic Predisposition to Fearful Reactive Aggression, we had a pretty serious case. But with a dedicated family and owners, anything is possible! Solution: With COVID restrictions, our potential owners had to communicate with the Rescue remotely. Then without ever meeting them, the shelter assigned dogs based on their requests. Because the Rescue insisted that these two dogs be adopted together, my clients went home with two dogs instead of one. Unfortunately, the dogs actually exacerbated each other’s stress/aggressive behaviors, making it more difficult to cope with any perceived threat. We worked together for 18 hours, teaching the owners how to
read the dogs’ body language to predict potential fear/stressors, and systematically building each dog’s confidence and coping mechanisms with their triggers and their new family! The key component in this case? The extreme dedication and vigilance of the family and owners to the process. Without their commitment, the following success wouldn’t have been possible! Starting out, both dogs were using Baskerville muzzles for safety, but by the end of our sessions, we were not only able to remove the muzzles completely and engage in affiliative play, but both dogs’ aggressive tendencies were reduced to near non-existent. To this day there have been no more bite incidents and the muzzles are no longer required to maintain a safe and secure rescue pack. With increased confidence and solidarity with their new forever family, this Aggressive Case got bitten in the butt early! Great Work! One Big Happy Family. Sean sits with Peter & Miles and their dedicated family.
Struggling with a dog who has aggressive behaviors, a bite history, or any other behavioral challenges? I love helping dog owners develop a more accurate view of your dog’s behaviors, mind and motivations in order to modify unwanted behaviors. Call, email, or check us out on Instagram @APetPerspective! Hawaiian Humane Society’s long-time vision comes to fruition By Jessica Tronoski Communications Manager Hawaiian Humane Society
The Ewa Expansion O
n May 5, the Hawaiian Humane Society embarked on the next phase of its 138-year history of service by breaking ground on a second permanent location at Ho‘opili in Ewa. The nonprofit’s Mo‘ili‘ili campus can be difficult to access for a large percentage of O‘ahu’s population who live in West O‘ahu and other areas outside of Honolulu’s urban core. But HHS is confident that this second campus will meet the growing demands and changing needs of the community in West O‘ahu. The 5-acre site on Old Fort Weaver Road, a generous gift from D.R. Horton, will provide a full range of services including (but not limited to):

sheltered, open-air space that contains adoption information, a help desk and a retail shop. A classroom will provide space for educational programming, youth camps and field trips, orientation for new staff members and volunteers, public-animal related activities and staff meetings. A volunteer check- in area will be provided for volunteers to store belongings and check-in with staff and other volunteers. Additional offices cover staff, computer stations, storage, maintenance and supply, food preparation, grooming, laundry, a reception area and bathrooms. Patios and lanais will also be provided on the ground floor. South of the main building will be several pavilions—three for dogs, two for cats and one for small animals, plus two dog acquaintance areas for potential adopters to meet and greet dogs on a one-on-one basis. A spacious dog park
will be provided for use by Hawaiian Humane and the public for dogs to walk, run, play and socialize. This project supports the HHS mission to promote the human-animal bond and the humane treatment of all animals and underlines our commitment to create a more compassionate community for people and animals for generations to come. The new Ewa facility will be twice as large as the one in Mo‘ili‘ili and is expected to open in early 2023.
Hawaiian Humane will be sharing updates on their Ewa Expansion every step of the way, so stay tuned on their various social media platforms and HawaiianHumane.org.

The Eddy Project T
he American Red Cross counts 500,000 pets in the U.S. affected by fire every year through displacement, injury and death. That’s a number so big, it’s hard to imagine the faces of any of them. But Phil Reller doesn’t have to imagine. For him, it’s personal. Phil lost his mom, Melba, and his brother, Britt, in the Marco Polo fire of 2017. Also perishing in the conflagration was their beloved rescue dog, Eddy. Refusing to succumb to the unimaginable pain, he instead felt inspired to see something good come out of that preventable tragedy. And thus, the Community Kokua Foundation for Fire Safety and Recovery was born and with it, The Eddy Project. The Foundation’s mission is to “equip the larger community with the tools it needs to prevent fires and restore lives devastated by fire, including education, advocacy, and public/ private partnerships.” The Eddy Project seeks to give pet owners the tools and knowledge to help navigate the additional havoc and devastation when an animal is involved. The Project’s first advice? Have a Plan! Make sure your family knows the exit points available in case of emergency and have a meet-up place, like next door under the mango tree. Have a leash ready by the front door and a leash or loop of rope at the other exits. Microchip your dog, and make sure the registration is up to date. Remember, the Hawaiian Humane Society no longer provides this service. Two free online databases you can register with: mypethealth.com and foundanimals.org.

Britt Reller and his beloved rescue dog Eddy perished in the 2017 Marco Polo fire.
Plan ahead for long-term care for your pet in case you have to live for six months in a hotel or other place that doesn’t accommodate them. The Project is developing a network of volunteers, rescue organizations, and businesses to assist when the need arises.
“The American Red Cross is happy to support the Eddy Project to promote pet welfare in fire emergencies and disasters. Having a plan and being prepared helps ensure that our four-legged family members remain safe.” Maria Lutz, American Red Cross, Pacific Islands Region
The Eddy Project has begun to distribute free stickers to alert First Responders to the presence of pets in residence. Doggie Due Diligence Whether you’re looking for a groomer, pet care professional or trainer, make time to research and have a list of questions ready. Websites and social media can provide insight into business philosophy. Mention any special needs your dog may have. Ask for references. If applicable ask if licensed, bonded and insured, and about contingency plans in case of emergency or natural disaster. Don’t wait until the last minute; as a new client it may take extra time to set up and schedule a new account. Pet care services can book up quickly, especially during busy holiday seasons. Your dog should be up-todate on vaccinations and monthlies. FALL 2021 • ISLAND DOG MAGAZINE 47

HUI ‘ILIO HAWAI‘I
DOG PARK NEWS In Memoriam — Elaine Dobashi
Update on Windward Dog Parks
Our local dog community mourns the loss of Elaine Dobashi, a true canine civic leader who passed away in February 2021. Elaine was a founding member of Hui ‘Ilio Hawai‘i who blazed the trail for involving the city of Honolulu in the development of and upkeep for dog parks. It took five years, but her dream finally came alive with the opening of Hawaii Kai Dog Park in 2008, our first year of publishing Island Dog Magazine. We got to know Elaine through our coverage of the groundbreaking ceremony and the grand opening. Elaine’s encouragement, positive attitude, and will to make things happen were reassuring and inspiring to us and others who followed her blueprint in the creation of many more dog parks. In a fitting tribute, the Honolulu City Council voted unanimously in early July to rename the Hawaii Kai Dog Park to Elaine Dobashi Dog Park.
Hamakua Dog Park...Buh-Bye Back in 2018 the Honolulu Star-Advertiser did a front page story on the proposed Hamakua dog park in Kailua. But after much fanfare, the project was scrapped. There was strong opposition by environmentalists who feared contamination of the marsh in the area. The city was also not willing to take on a $3.8 million state-of-the-art project that consisted of a community park with amenities plus the dog park. $250,000 for Bayview Dog Park Plans for a Kaneohe dog park at a parcel next to Bayview Golf Course are alive and well. Councilmember Esther Kia‘aina and her office continue to work with the Department of Environmental Services, the Department of Parks and Recreation, corporation counsel, and the owners of Bayview Golf Course to establish the dog park. And her amendment for $250,000 for the park was included in the City’s CIP Budget which passed on June 6. With the expected transfer of lands to the Department of Parks and Recreation, allocated funds can be used for the planning, design, and construction of the new dog park.
2009: The early days of Hawaii Kai Dog Park. Park goers continue to enjoy ocean and moutain views and spectacular sunsets. In honor of its founder, the park will be renamed Elaine Dobashi Dog Park. FALL 2021• ISLAND DOG MAGAZINE 53

Disaster Preparedness
ISTOCKPHOTO
Planning Ahead for Your Pet’s Safety
Hurricane season runs from June through the end of November. In the event of evacuation for a hurricane or other disaster, residents and pets should come prepared with a pet disaster preparedness kit — shelters do not stock supplies. Pets entering shelter must be securely leashed, or in a pet carrier/crate for safety. Where to Shelter According to the Department of Emergency Management, City and County of Honolulu, all Oahu evacuation shelters are considered pet accommodating. Monitor local media and official social media sites for specifics and updates. Based on the type of disaster and other circumstances, not all shelters will be open and facilities other than those listed may be used. Stay informed at: Visit the City and Count of Honolulu’s Department of Emergency Management site at honolulu.gov/DEM, Facebook: @OahuDEM, and Twitter: @Oahu_DEM. Sign up for free alerts to your cell phone and or email account: https://hnl.info/alerts provided by the City and County of Honolulu. If sheltering in your own home, bring pets indoors well ahead of a disaster. A safe indoor area should be protected from breaking glass, wind and noise. If your pet is prone to getting very stressed, talk to your vet about medication to reduce anxiety. Your pet kit should include:
your pet’s photo to the crate along with name and contact information. Photos • Pet crate or carrier (one per pet).
