Let us introduce you to King Louie Meredith, a.k.a. Pupperton. He is an adorable, curious, determined and very playful poi-dog. He was born on January 16, 2022, the runt of the litter of pups that came by surprise to his Mama Akela and Daddy Lucky. You see, Akela is a purebred English Bulldog who already had a purebred litter previously. As Akela was being scheduled to meet up with a stud, her house mate, Lucky, decided to creep into her sleep area while nobody was looking and well..ahem.. plant some seeds who blossomed later into a healthy, cute litter of bullhuahua puppies!
Louie’s favorite hobbies are napping, playing tug-of-war, chasing after balls, and eating! Louie loves to eat! Besides his regular Blue Buffalo treats and puppy dinner, he will devour water

From birth, it seems that King Louie has always had a playful nature and loved to be around his sister the most. Her name is Omi, and she was adopted by our best friend Brandi. Quite often, the puppies have playdates together and even recently got spayed and neutered together at the Oahu SPCA.

Louie is a very loving dog. Whenever we have a stressful day and feel anxious, he will crawl into our laps and begin to lick our faces with kisses to calm us down. He is the definition of crazy, un conditional love and we are so happy to have this dog in our lives!
Louie loves to go on walks and greet everyone he sees with high jumps, a wagging tail and plenty of licking. This is why we also call him “The Ambassador of Aloha.” We look forward to taking him to the beach soon so he can enjoy the surf and sand while living here in Hawaii.

We trained Rona’s family to teach her how to default into calmness and composure when meeting other people, kids, and dogs. By positively providing beneficial socialization and training, the puppy was rewarded for all calm behaviors in the presence of others. In addition, establishing some basic protocols and boundaries in the home, such as using a crate and having appropriate “play/zoomies zones” made for a safe home environment.

DIAGNOSIS: Rona had been separated from her mother and litter at the young age of 6 weeks and during the early days of her “Critical Period for Human Socialization” (Puppy->Human: 0-12 weeks, Puppy ->Canine: 0-16 weeks). With her new family, the high energy and chaotic child play created an over-excited and sometimes fearful puppy, whose only understanding of “Play” was to match the kids’ energy. This resulted in very natural and puppy-like jumping and nipping play behaviors.
With research at The University of Google, Mom began to shake bottles full of pennies and yell “NO!” at the puppy as she would engage in these acts, in her best attempt to stop the dangerous behavior around her children. Unfortunately, this resulted in a puppy who was now fearfully reactive to the newly scary, unpredictable, and even threatening humans. Subsequently, this taught Rona that her best defense was a good offense, and the territorial fearful growling and snapping behaviors began.

On June 22, the Hawaii Kai Dog Park was most auspiciously renamed the Elaine Dobashi Dog Park.
As a founding member of Hui ‘Ilio Hawai‘i, Elaine blazed the trail for involving the city of Honolulu in the development of and upkeep for dog parks. It took five years, but her dream finally came alive with the opening of the Hawaii Kai Dog Park in 2008. Her encouragement, positive attitude, and will to make things happen were reassuring and inspiring to all who followed her blueprint in the creation of many more dog parks. Elaine, who passed away in February of last year, will never be forgotten by those with whom she shared her spirit. And now she is properly memorialized for future generations of dog lovers.

The Hawaii State Legislature appropriated funds to HCDA, via H.B. 1600, for the design and construction of the off-leash dog park and the next phase of the crosswalk
After a two-year hiatus, the Windward Dog Park Hui is back on track working on getting a dog park on Windward Oahu. “We have new volunteers with strong skills to help us in our efforts,” said group president Janine Tully. “Our goal is to strengthen our base so that we can support the city in attaining this goal.” A parcel next to Bayview Golf Course is under consideration. Volunteers interested in grantwriting, fundraising, and other tasks are welcomed to contact the group through Facebook or by calling (808) 778-1662.
The elected officials touted the collaboration between City, State, and elected officials and the speed at which the Hawaii Community Development Authority (HCDA) was able to get the temporary crosswalk started. Said HCDA executive director Craig Nakamoto, “This kind of project, while relatively small, demonstrates what a smaller size agency, like ours, can do.”

Carrie graduated from Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine, followed by a small animal rotating internship at the Veterinary Referral and Emergency Center in Norwalk, Connecticut, and then an internal medicine residency at the Animal Medical Center in New York City. After becoming a diplomat of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine she stayed at AMC for several years, before returning home to Honolulu.

From Canada, Jessica attended the University of Hawaii for her undergraduate degree in Marine Biology. She completed veterinary school in Melbourne, Australia, an Emergency and Critical Care Internship in Philadelphia, and residency at Ocean State Veterinary Specialists in Rhode Island. After becoming boarded she stayed on at Ocean State before deciding to move to better weather. Professional interests include neonatal critical care, respiratory emergencies, auto-transfusion, mechanical ventilation and sepsis.
Born and raised in Michigan, Julie attended the University of Michigan, receiving a Bachelor of Science in Architecture, after which she decided to work with animals and graduated from the Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine. She completed a rotating internship at the University of Pennsylvania, then a three-year residency in Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care at MSU. She came back to Oahu to be near family, happily for us! Professional interests include toxicities and endocrine emergencies.
