Aloha! Refresh, renew and revel! We relish the opportunity to reveal our Spring Health and Puppies issue to you, our ravenous readers. It starts with that look of reverie on the face of Henry, our Cover Boy—a charming, happy lad of the Beagle/ Cavalier King Charles persuasion. Our Da Kine Canine and Cutest Puppies Ever photo galleries are replete with resplendent images of your ever-loving and ever-loved pets. And there really are four pages of puppies, 4! Next up is Pups & Peeps, so email us pics of you with your 4LBFFs to be revealed in our Summer Fun issue at the Pet Expo. Then get your rear down to our booth at the Blaisdell on Mother’s Day weekend to retrieve your rarefied edition! Dr. John Kaya regales us with a biting tale of recidivist Rambo fleas: the curious case of the indestructible infestation. And we report on the recent reprieve given Hemp and its refined CBD oil, with all of its possible positive results. Our annually recurring Veterinary Directory records the whereabouts of various vets throughout Oahu. Organized by location, you’ll easily find a relationship close to your work or residence. As if all this ridiculous refreshment were not enough, resident artists Dan Van Zyle and John Pritchett cast their redolent artistry upon the Labrador Retriever and the possibility of a repast with your pup, respectively. As ever, we are grateful for your reading our little dog rag, resulting in your visiting our resilient advertisers and reciting that you saw them here.

id you ever wonder what a Half Beagle and Half Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy would be like? Meet Henry! Blue eyes, heart shaped nose, and a stalky stature is what makes Henry so special. But most of all, it’s his loving personality. Henry was about two months old when we adopted him last May. When we first saw Henry, he just got a bath and was shivering in a little box. Instantly, we knew he was our going to be our new dog. Henry enjoys visits to Dr. Scott and the kind staff at the Pet Clinic. He always smells so fresh after mom and dad pick him up from a sleepover. He loves playing with his brother Bailey at the Ala Wai Dog Park. At first glance, Henry and Bailey seem like twins because they look so closely alike. Henry also likes going to school at Petco with his favorite teacher Cassie. Some of Henry’s favorite toys are a frozen Kong stuffed with kibble, a smelly mat hidden with jerky treats, and a toy Santa Claus and Penguin from Grandma and Grandpa Higa. Henry’s favorite food recipe is kibble mixed with chicken broth or water. Henry took a big adventure on a trip to visit his family in Hilo. He was a brave pup as he rode first class in the cargo section on Hawaiian Airlines. He met his older cousins Mele and Teenie. Henry wanted to say thank you to Uncle Karl for the Milk Bone treat and sorry to Grandma Haraga for marking your kitchen mat. Grandpa Haraga introduced Henry to watered down ice (it’s gentle on his teeth). He hopes to visit his family on Maui and his new cousin Coco. — Wayne Higa

Henry

Dear G randma Haraga, I’m sorry I marked your kitchen mat. Please invite me back and I promise to b e a good boy. Henry

I Love My F-150!

Rain or Shine, It’s F-150 Time! —Kelly Boy DeLima

Kelly Boy, Big Blue & the Kapenamobile

I love my F-150, especially for the elements. When it’s sunny, I throw the kids and the gear in the back and hit the beach. But when it rains, which happens a lot here on the windward side, that’s when I really appreciate my F-150! Even when it starts flooding in Kaneohe or Kahaluu, or heavy rains fall on the Pali, I am always comfortable. There’s a safe feeling being high up in my truck. The handling on the wet roads and around potholes is just so dynamic and responsive. So come to the windward side for a rainy day test drive and see why I say, “Get Your Own Ford!” —Kelly Boy Delima

The Curious Case of the Indestructible Infestation BY JOHN KAYA, DVM Hawaii Kai Veterinary Clinic

S

ummer is approaching soon and conditions will be perfect for parasites. Public enemy number one in Hawaii is fleas. The good news is that there are a handful of very effective products to prevent infestations. Still though, remaining parasite free can be a challenge. Tom brought his dog Buster in for an exam. The concern was fur loss and constant itching. “He just won’t stop scratching Doc,” Tom blurted in a flabbergasted tone. “Buster is usually a sound sleeper but now I can hear him whining and itching himself in the middle of the night. I feel sorry for the big guy.” As Tom shared his story, I watched his four-year-old Labrador scratch himself incessantly. His fur looked moth eaten in certain spots and the exposed skin appeared angry. As I proceeded with the exam, I noticed that Buster’s fur had lots of tiny black specks. “Tom, do you see these

40  ISLAND DOG MAGAZINE • SPRING 2019

black specks? These are flea feces. I’m sorry to tell you this but Buster has fleas,” I announced. I reached into my pocket, pulled out a flea comb and proceeded to work it into Buster’s coat. Holding out the resulting accumulation of debris I pointed out, “those tiny little squirmy bugs are fleas.” “But Doc, I just put on a new flea collar for Buster. There’s no way he could have fleas.” Tom looked concerned. “Flea collars served their purpose years ago but now they are no longer as effective as they used to be. We have much more effective products these days. I’ll recommend one for Buster and we’ll see if it helps with his itching.” With that, Tom left our clinic committed to the eradication of the annoying critters that kept Buster up at night. A few months later Tom returned. Buster’s coat looked a little better but I couldn’t help but notice the rattling sound of his dog tag. Buster was still scratching.

DIMARIK/ISTOCKPHOTO.COM

“Doc, the product you gave me really helped with Buster’s flea problem but I’m still finding an occasional flea or two. Do you have any other flea medication?” “Wow, the flea preventive that we gave you last time is very effective. You must have some tough fleas in your neighborhood. Okay, let’s try a different product.” Again, Tom left with Buster and seemed hopeful. Unfortunately, the duo again returned two months later. Tom reported that the results were like the last time. “I don’t understand it. The medication that Buster is on should take care of it. Hmmm, do you have any other dogs in the house?” I asked. “Nope, just my little buddy here,” replied Tom. “I do have two cats

though. Buster doesn’t like them much. He basically avoids them.” Bingo! After a few more questions, I found out that Tom’s two cats go in and out of the house all day long. There was no doubt in my mind that Tom’s cats had fleas. As long as the cats had fleas, Buster would still have fleas. We immediately put all the furry critters in Tom’s house on a flea regimen. A few months later Tom reported that all was well. Buster no longer scratched and his fur look fantastic. He still avoided the cats but it wasn’t because of fleas. Tom said they scratched Buster when he was a puppy and he never forgot it. Oh well, at least he no longer itched. This article was first published in Midweek.

Be ready for the warmer months ahead by making sure all your pets are using appropriate and effective flea and tick preventatives. Monthly tablets/chews and topicals are widely available and some even include heartworm protection. SPRING 2019 • ISLAND DOG MAGAZINE  41

CBD Unleashed

BY JOHN HARMON

Pet owners are now free to seek alternative solutions.

U

nless you’ve been hiding under a pile of kitty litter for the past few years, you’re surely aware of the incredible amount of hype around cannabidiol (CBD) oil. Now that it’s legal, how are Hawaii’s dogs potentially affected? CBD oil comes from the hemp strain of Cannabis Sativa L. which only contains a trace amount of THC, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana that gets you (or your dog) high. Although legal from the beginning of our country, hemp was classified as a drug in the 1930s along with pot, and they were both reclassified in 1970 as a Schedule 1

controlled substance along with heroin. But hemp is an amazingly versatile plant, useful in producing everything from clothes to beauty and skin care, to rope, to plastics and biofuel to medicinals. In 1999, Hawaii State Representative Cynthia Thielen sponsored legislation to research producing industrial hemp in the islands. She celebrated when Donald Trump signed the Farm Bill in December of last year, which included legalization. “Pineapple and sugar are gone, but hemp is here. There are over 25,000 uses and products for hemp, none of which would get you high,” said Rep. Thielen.

Although not yet scientifically proven, CBD may help dogs with: Seizures Spasms Nerve Pain Arthritis Joint Pain Inflammation Cardiac Ailments

42  ISLAND DOG MAGAZINE • SPRING 2019

Stress Separation Anxiety Nausea/Vomiting Low Appetite Bowel Disease Cancer Pain Slowing Tumors

Noise Phobias Strains Torn Ligaments Surgery Recovery Skin Disorders Energy Boost Weight Loss

“Legalization of industrial hemp through the 2018 Farm Bill will lead to widespread commercial cultivation without legal roadblocks.” Now hemp, but not yet marijuana, is legal across America, including our 50th State. But its oil is expensive. Because the industry is just starting out, there is a scarcity of acreage devoted to growing hemp and there is not yet an economy of scale that will come with the expected flood of CBD oil to hit the market. Is it worth it? In many cases, yes. Last June, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the first drug made from CBD, Epidiolex, after their rigorous testing proved its value in helping people with treatment of seizures associated with two rare and severe forms of epilepsy, Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome. It also verified the consistency of potency in dosage. This is the only approved medicinal use of CBD, but it points to some truly beneficial properties. Meanwhile, there are a ton of anecdotal claims for its usefulness

in treating all kinds of ailments (see sidebar). So we asked our panel of advertisers who sell CBD products what local people are looking for when buying for their dogs. Calvin & Susie Kailua Kim: Our customers give their dogs CBD to calm them. It helps with separation anxiety, prepping for plane trips, and of course, fireworks. We sold out of everything for both Fourth of July and New Year’s! Dogwalker, etc. Erin: Libby, my Cavalier King Charles, is now 16 and a half. I started giving her CBD oil two years ago when she was at her expiration date. She was diagnosed with an enlarged heart and heart murmurs, and extensive testing was not an option for her age. I was looking for something to just keep her calm until she passed, when I found CBD oil. And when I gave it to her, the results were immediate—literally 5-10 minutes. Now I give it to her not just for anxiety, but also for joint mobility and for digestion. Those are the three big things.

CBD continued from page 43 Hawaii Medicinal and A Pet Perspective Sean: Both humans and canines have the naturally occurring endocannabinoid system, meaning that our bodies also produce them. I have a lot of clients that are using CBD oil to mitigate sound anxiety—fireworks, gunshot and explosive sounds from nearby military bases, cars that backfire etc. And it’s especially helpful for older dogs with arthritic conditions as it usually improves their quality of life by reducing swelling and pain.

The Pet Depot Tish: It really helps with the fireworks, which we have a lot of in Ewa Beach. CBD also calms hyper and rowdy dogs and eases arthritis and joint pain. The Public Pet Jordan: The majority of our customers are using CBD for calming and to ease anxiety. We sold a bunch during the New Year’s Eve season. It’s also great for older dogs, like our Lola, with mobility issues, aches and pains. It’s a great alternative to tranquilizers or synthetic man-made drugs.

Koolau Pets Rob: We are just bringing in CBD oil, and we’re excited to make it available to help our customers whose dogs are suffering from joint pain and arthritis.

Dog owners in Hawaii now have the option of exploring the medicinal uses of the hemp plant. Take a moment to research the products online, and pay close attention to dosing and Paw Hana Supply frequency instructions when giving to Kaylee: One of my friend’s dogs has cancer, so she’s been giving him CBD your pet. Start small and work up. Your pet’s size, age, and health/medical and he started getting his appetite condition all play a role. back and has been moving around And always talk to your veterinarian, better. It also seems to be helping with who knows your pet best, with any the pain. questions or concerns.
