Arthur—our Amusing Muse
Aloha! A canine Spring Fling is a beautiful thing! And we are overjoyed that this issue starts our thirteenth year thanks to you who are reading our little dog mag. Again, mahalo! We start with our cover girl, the lovely Loea, regal with her haku lei in a poignant pose captured by lensmaster Ashley Smith. Our photo galleries are resplendent with your K9 contributions and pics of your pups. Puppies! Yay! Next up is Pups & Peeps, where you get to bask in the reflected glow of doggie goodness. So snap ’em and send ’em. Sean Riley explains some of his holistic methods as a canine behavioral psychologist, taking you Inside the Canine Mind. And it seems we are awash with scientific findings of the pooch persuasion which we happily pass along in K9 Science. Our annual Veterinary Directory has all of Oahu’s care centers and the vets who practice there, listed by area instead of alphabetically. That way you can find someone near your home or office to treat your treasured fur ball. We update the catalog of off-leash Dog Parks with the welcome addition of the Kalo Place Mini Park near the University, and present a plethora of puppy products in Gifts and Sniffs. All this, plus resident artists John Pritchett and Dan Van Zyle ruminating upon the magic of the ball and the awesomeness of the Akita, respectively, makes for a bright and bounteous spring, indeed! We are ever grateful for the kindness of your attention in this most digital of ages. And we are indebted to you for mentioning to our advertisers that you saw them in our pages. That’s the circle of life for Island Dog.

SPR ING COV E R DOG
Loea Loea Vuitton Chun was born in Makakilo, Hawaii and I always say God gave us an angel that day. Her mom’s owner was very upset because his prize, full bred pit bull was impregnated by the neighborhood “stud,” a dachshund/mix mutt, and the result was a pitwee! Loea (meaning talented in Hawaiian) heard my voice and wobbled and wiggled into my arms in a moment of pure and absolute love. Now almost 12 years, she lived the first half of her life Soul mates Kawena Chun and Loea. on Oahu surfing, swimming, fishing, hiking, etc. At 5 years old we moved to the mainland and her “cold weather” wardrobe grew into her own closet. Always my best friend, our connection is now closer to soul mates. She has been to Washington D.C. for the Inauguration Ball, and frequents New York City, Miami, and Martha’s Vineyard. At Martha’s Vineyard we learned Loea could swim under water, catching and eating crabs. She loves riding on ATVs and golf carts—a real need for speed. In Miami our obsession became fishing. Sometimes Loea would steal one of my fish, drop it in the pool, and pretend to catch it herself. Back in Hawaii now, Loea is still a tita at heart. She will bark at any dog in “her” neighborhood and is the alpha in the household, but she’s an angel with children. Dogs have a beautiful way of making us more human and she always reminds me what’s important in life and to treasure each day we have together. —Kawena Chun 16 ISLAND DOG MAGAZINE • SPRING 2020

Japanese dog grooming and “Ice on the Water,” an aging Labrador and an Italian fisherman facing an uncertain future on Lake Como. Netflix (Season 1/2018)
A vet in Canada intervened when a family brought in a 173 lb. golden retreiver named Kai. Instead of being put down, he was fostered by Pam Heggie through the Misfits of Alberta Animal Rescue. And so began Kai’s year-long weight loss journey.
When Pam first brought him home, it took 20 minutes to climb the stairs and get through the front door. Five to 10 steps and he had to sit down. But many small steps led to big changes over time. Water therapy strengthened Kai's legs and built up stamina. And of course he was put on a strict diet. The
wins got bigger...walking past the neighbor's driveway, walking to the end of the block, getting into the car on his own, climbing stairs. By July 2019, Kai had dropped over 100 pounds and now weighs 68 pounds. Pam adopted Kai and these days he’s got energy to spare and keeps busy as a certified Therapy Dog.

the Canine Mind
Developing protocols to help pet owners deal with unwanted canine behavior
By Sean Riley, Canine Behavioral Psychologist
“ My dog just won’t listen to me!” a new client tells me, desperation in her voice. “We’ve tried everything, and he is still so crazy and we don’t know what to do!” I ask about the dog’s history, listening to all the “crazy” scenarios and begin to develop an understanding of what might be some of the root factors that predicate the dog’s behavior. “He destroyed my sofa because he was mad at me for leaving him home.” “He’s protective of me around other dogs.” “I love him so much, he’s my little four-legged human who doesn’t speak very good English.” You may have heard some of these before, from your friends, family, or maybe even yourself. It’s ok, I’m guilty of it too. But as a Canine Behavioral Psychologist, it’s my duty to enlighten dog owners with a more holistic approach to understanding a dog’s unique canine psychology that dictates their every behavior. Anthropomorphic is the term for ascribing human-like characteristics, attributes, emotions, and psychological processes to animals. And it is natural for us to do. After all, we are human, and what we know best is human psychology. So we create characters like Lassie, Marmaduke, etc. But we are better served to look at their behaviors through the mind of a canine. Sean and his two dogs at his windward Oahu campus.
40 ISLAND DOG MAGAZINE • SPRING 2020
Maybe the dog that doesn’t listen to you and is so crazy really doesn’t understand you because a clear and consistent means of communication was not established or maintained. Establishing queues between your pup and the entire family would be very helpful. The dog that destroys the sofa because he’s mad you left all day would show drastic improvement with a behavioral plan that gives him more mental and physical stimulation before he is left at home alone. And the overly protective little dog could be acting out because of fear-based aggression. A well-structured socialization plan could teach her that she doesn’t need to fear other dogs and that her aggression is not supported by her humans. As a pet psychologist, I take in every client on a case-by-case basis and create a custom behavior plan tailored to your dog’s specific needs and background. My job is to teach you how to predict, prevent, communicate, and rehabilitate those behaviors, building a stronger and more balanced life between pups and parents. A majority of my cases deal with aggression, biting, lunging, and similar unwanted behaviors that could cause risk to you, your dog, or others. Recognizing these behaviors early is the best time to seek professional help.
Case StudY 1 Name: Teddy, Basenji/Whippet mix Symptoms: On walks, growling and snapping at kids and other dogs. Major dog-dog aggression. Diagnosis: Teddy was a rescue who had been separated from his mom way too early. He was raised with other hunting dogs and was attacked by one, leaving him partially paralyzed by a lower back trauma. He became extremely, aggressively defensive as a result. Although rehomed after a recovery period, he was always anxious, terrible on a leash in public, and couldn’t get exercise on his own, still hampered by his injury. Solution: It took nearly 12 hours, but now Teddy is confident around other dogs with no growling, snapping, or reacting. When introduced to my pack, he chose a play partner—my year-old Doberman Pinscher who was bigger than him. Wow! He is able to
deliver a play bow, receive acceptance, and have good, balanced play. Now his owner can walk him without the constant pulling, lunging, and snarling that plagued earlier outings. Case StudY 2 Name: Taco, Dachshund Symptoms: Barking, snapping, going on the attack while being walked. Diagnosis: Taco was never appropriately socialized in his critical 4-16 weeks of age. Any time he met another dog, he was afraid of how it would react, so he was aggressive to make it back off. Solution: I taught Taco’s owner to be proactive by reading his mannerisms, body language, and other signals. Then I introduced him to a balanced pack to learn how to interact, working patiently with the pack and my own dog for about 12 hours. Finally! A pup who hangs out and plays nicely, enjoying and even seeking out others.

The Eyes Have It

ou know The Look. Their eyes get a little wider, a bit of a slant, and display a soulful longing: Puppy Dog Eyes. Turns out, you’re not imagining it. Evolution is at work, always favoring traits that result in better outcomes. And this trait gets treats! Despite having only been domesticated for some 30,000 years (the proverbial blink of an eye in evolutionary years), dogs have developed an extra muscle that lets them raise the inner part of their eyelid to achieve the desired effect. Wolves have only an “irregular cluster of fibres” around their eyes, while dogs display solid muscle structure. Researchers believe that dogs are so simpatico with humans that they gained this

ability just to please us humans. And please us it does. Dr. Juliane Kaminski of the University of Portsmouth (UK) studied shelter dogs to find out why some were adopted sooner than others. “The only thing that seemed to have an effect,” she said, “is this eyebrow movement.” Further study showed that dogs make this movement more often when humans are looking at them. This radical change in anatomy is thought to have occurred by humans liking the look of puppies (and babies), something we’ve bred in dogs for centuries. So we are helpless to resist The Look, as we helped engineer it. But really, who wants to?

even human years for each dog year? That easy formula worked when humans lived to about 70 and dogs to about 10, but no more. The American Veterinary Medical Association has a new guideline based more on science, so for a medium-sized dog: • The first year = 15 human years • The second year = about nine • The third year+ = about five Why the change? Size and breed are factors. Smaller dogs are generally considered senior at 7 years old, but they tend to live longer. Larger breed dogs tend to have a shorter lifespan and may be considered senior at age 5 or 6. The “senior” status indicates a stage of life when vets start seeing age-related problems. So consider these calculations as estimates rather than precise determinations.

Wolf or Dog? It’s an ancient question.
T
SERGEY FEDOROV
he melting permafrost in earth’s northern regions is yielding treasures that were literally frozen in time, and one is especially interesting to dog lovers: a two-month old cub/pup found near Yakutsk in Russia in 2018. He was remarkably well preserved with teeth, fur, nails and even foot pads intact. Radiocarbon dating has confirmed his age when frozen and that it was about 18,000 years ago, and genome testing proved him male (Although being so complete, there were probably easier ways to determine gender). Initial DNA sequencing on “Dogor” by the Swedish Centre for Palaeogenetics was astonishing. “The Centre has Europe’s largest DNA bank of all canines around the globe, yet in this case they couldn’t identify it on the first try,” said Love Dalen, Professor of Evolutionary Genetics. Further tests will be done to try and find out if he is a wolf, a dog or something in between. And haven’t we all asked that question ourselves, especially at feeding time?
