A dog in the Spring under quarantine is a beautiful thing. What a blessing our 4LBFFs are! And we here at Island Dog are happy to honor them with our annual celebration of puppies- yes, PUPPIES! Starting with our Cover Cutie, Maluca. Ain’t she sweet? Our Puppy Love Gallery is teeming with more precious little furballs than you can shake a treat at, and our Da Kine Canine Photo Gallery is five whole pages of your priceless pups. Summer’s special gallery will be Pups & Peeps, where you get to show your mug while basking in the glow of doggie presence. Send ‘em in! Spring also brings our annual Vet Directory, with businesses listed by location so you can find the most convenient ones easily. Be sure to tell them you found them here, natch. Nuggets unearths interesting canine diversions including Champ & Major Biden putting paws back in the White House, while Gifts & Sniffs noses out the things that make dogs (and us!) happy. Bonnie Beatson of Windward Community College updates us on their Vet Tech program, where you can learn how to care for animals professionally. It’s a hybrid program with online learning mixed with hands-on labs on campus and internships at local clinics. It’s even open to the Outer Islands! All this, plus resident artists John Pritchett and Dan Van Zyle beguiling us with sweet dreams and the bodacious Border Collie, respectively, makes for a simply sumptuous feast! And, as ever, we are thankful for the kindness of your attention in this most digital of ages and for buttering up our advertisers by telling them you saw them here. It’s hard for everyone, but if we keep what little money we have amongst ourselves in the local economy we’ll get through this. We are Island strong!

SPRING COVER DOG

orn in the summer of 2020, Maluca Mala was one of two pups in her small Shih Tzu litter. Sizing up a tad smaller than her sister, Tootsie Rose, they were both covered with dark black fur. Maluca’s iconic white striped marking on her head was the only distinct difference between the sisters. It was noted early that Maluca’s legs were not developing and she was born with swimmers syndrome, an uncommon developmental condition where the hind limbs are splayed, leaving the puppy unable to stand or walk. Though facing a hurdle early in life, Maluca’s drive to be a playful puppy kept her going. She was walking (then running) for the first time with legs wrapped in tape and loving every minute of her newfound independence. Maluca, which translates to ‘crazy girl’ in Portuguese, combined with her spicy sweet temperament, would be her main driver needed to help correct her condition. Now at six months old the cute puppy has quickly become the star brand ambassador for The Public Pet. Maluca loves to greet all customers with her tail wagging high and is quite the social butterfly on the sales floor. This Shih Tzu has a fiery personality, can play for hours on end, is always excited for her raw meals and more than ready for belly rubs on the couch. Maluca’s favorite signs of affection are nibbling on ear lobes and staring into your eyes while kissing you on the lips. 16  ISLAND DOG MAGAZINE • SPRING 2021

NBA and Covid-19 In yet another tribute to the K9 nose, the NBA’s Miami Heat is training dogs to sniff COVID-19. Already working in airports in Finland and Chile, sports teams are hoping that COVID-sniffing dogs will make it possible for fans and staff to safely enter arenas. Ticket holders will line up prior to entry (socially distanced, of course) while a detection dog walks by. Upon smelling the virus, the dog will simply sit down to indicate its presence. The indicated attendee and his entire party will be denied entry and receive refunds. People allergic to or scared of dogs will be offered a rapid antibody test with the results available in about 45 minutes. And so man’s best friend will help make it possible to enjoy man’s favorite team. Arf!

A research paper on the evolution of dogs in Scientific Reports posits that even though wolves and humans are pack hunters and would naturally have been in competition for the same prey, differences in our digestive systems made our symbiosis possible. Genetic studies show dogs evolved about 20,000-40,000 years ago from a single population of now-extinct wolves in Eurasia. That just happened to be the peak of global ice volume during the Last Glacial

Guillaume Archambault

It was the Meat!

Maximum, a period as cold as its name suggests. Lead author Maria Lahtinen, senior scientist at the Finnish Food Authority with an interest in ancient diets, realized that during the freezing months of winter, humans would have to eat mostly animals. And having come from apes, we only can tolerate about 20% of our caloric intake from protein, while wolves are true carnivores. So humans would focus on the fatty parts and have excess lean meat, i.e., the earliest dog food. Whether humans kept wolves for pets, to hunt, or to warn of danger (and probably all three), the result is doggone wonderful!

DOTUS in Da House!

TWITTER @DRBIDEN

After the only four years in the last one hundred as a pet-free zone, the White House is finally welcoming animals back. Champ and Major Biden were chomping at the biscuit in anticipation of making their mark, figuratively speaking. Champ came from a Pennsylvania German Shepherd breeder in 2008, spent eight years in the vice presidential residence, and now he makes his move to the Big House. His name was chosen by the grandkids, and reportedly came from President Biden’s dad in this FLOTUS and DOTUS L-R: Major, First Lady Jill advice to his son, “Any time you get Biden and Champ. knocked down, champ, get up!” Major was adopted from the Delaware Humane Association and is proud to be America’s first rescue dog First Dog. He appeared in social media posts during the campaign, including one titled “No ruff days on the trail when I have some Major motivation.”

ANDRE MOUTON

Ban on Emotional Support Animals American Airlines, Delta, United, JetBlue, Spirit, Alaska and Frontier are among the carriers that will no longer allow Emotional Support Animals. Effective January 11, the Department of Transportation’s revision to the Air Carrier Access Act declared that ESAs will no longer be considered service animals on commercial flights. There is a difference between traveling with your pet or a trained service animal. Always check with specific airlines to understand all conditions and restrictions in making travel plans with an animal. Trained service dogs are still welcome aboard commercial flights with a DOT form attesting to the dog’s health, training and behavior, but that fake service vest purchased online will probably get you grounded. Although ESAs will no longer fly for free in the cabin, they may be transported as pets, if all requirements are met. That means being allowed in the cabin in an approved carrier that will fit under the seat in front of you, plus paying applicable fees, or traveling with your pet as check-in baggage. Generally speaking, we’re talking dogs or cats...so leave the peacock at home. SPRING 2021 • ISLAND DOG MAGAZINE  23

Veterinary Technology at Windward CC

hen you drop your pet off at the veterinary hospital or clinic, have you ever thought about who besides the veterinarian is involved in their care? The veterinary technician, or vet tech, provides the veterinarian with technical support for all aspects of patient care, from greeting you and your pet and listening to your concerns to performing a physical exam, running lab tests, taking X-rays, performing dental exams and cleaning, and assisting the veterinarian in surgery. And, like veterinarians, they are trained to work with several species of animals. They are trained to: obtain and record patient case histories; collect specimens and perform laboratory procedures; provide specialized nursing care; prepare animals, instruments, and equipment for surgery; assist in diagnostic, medical, and surgical procedures; obtain diagnostic radiographs (X-rays); advise and educate animal owners; supervise and train practice personnel; and perform dental prophylaxes. Windward Community College offers the ONLY American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program

Large animals are part of the training at sites like Kualoa Ranch where Gavin Paracuelles and Tasha Oba check vital signs and practice general health checkups.

for veterinary healthcare paraprofessionals in Hawai‘i. The college offers two Veterinary Technology AS degree options: •O ahu: 2-year program with in-person courses and labs • Statewide: 3-year hybrid program with online courses and in-person labs The 2-year program consists of a full-time schedule of academics and hands-on experience with live animals in a clinical setting, and includes two internships working alongside industry professionals. The 3-year hybrid program is also open to Neighbor Island students and designed with a more relaxed schedule to allow time for work and family. Lecture classes are online and

hands-on essential skills completed in labs at Windward CC. Neighbor Island students will attend fast-track labs a minimum of three times during a semester. Students enrolled in the hybrid program will work or volunteer part-time under the supervision of a veterinarian. While the majority of veterinary technicians are employed in private practice, the demand for technicians is rapidly expanding to include new employment opportunities in specialties such as military service, food safety inspection, teaching, zoo animal and wildlife care, diagnostic laboratory support, veterinary supply sales, animal control and humane society animal care, and drug and feed company technical service and sales.

Information Sessions To learn more about the 2-year and 3-year vet tech degree options, email: vettech@hawaii.edu to attend a free information session. Zoom sessions start at 10am for one hour on: March 5 April 9 May 7 June 4 July 2 Learn more at: windward.hawaii.edu

Inside the Puppy Mind Early Puppy Development and COVID - A Case Study

I

always look forward to working with puppies. They’re are an exciting and fun new addition to any family. However, puppy behavior and development are affected by both Genetics and Environmental/Social Factors; Nature and Nurture. We train owners on how to teach their puppy, mitigating unwanted puppy behaviors and setting the puppy up for the best adult behavioral outcome. CASE STUDY Name: “Rona” - 8 weeks old, Dogo Argentino Symptoms: Jumping up and snapping at the young kids, baring teeth, snapping and growling at Mom, creating an unsafe home environment. Diagnosis: Rona had been separated from her mother and litter at the young age of 6 weeks and during the early days of her “Critical Period for Human Socialization” (Puppy->Human: 0-12 weeks, Puppy ->Canine: 0-16 weeks). With her new family, the high energy and chaotic child play created an over-excited and sometimes fearful puppy, whose only understanding of “Play” was to match the kids’ energy. This resulted in very natural and puppy-like jumping and nipping play behaviors. With research at The University of Google, Mom began to shake bottles full of pennies and yell “NO!” at the puppy as she would engage in these acts, in her best attempt to stop the dangerous behavior around her children. Unfortunately, this resulted in a puppy who was now fearfully reactive to the newly scary, unpredictable, and even threatening humans. Subsequently, this taught Rona that her best defense was a good offense, and the territorial fearful growling and snapping behaviors began. Solution: After working with Rona and her owners until she was 6 months old, Mom said this: “I just feel 44  ISLAND DOG MAGAZINE • SPRING 2021

like the house is Super Peaceful now, she doesn’t bark at me anymore for anything, and I feel like we don’t have that tension anymore! I know exactly what I need to do now and I feel so much more confident stepping up and being able to teach Rona the behaviors I do want her doing, as opposed to just yelling at her. The kids love her now, and we feel like she is part of the family.” We trained Rona’s family to teach her how to default into calmness and composure when meeting other people, kids, and dogs. By positively providing beneficial socialization and training, the puppy was rewarded for all calm behaviors in the presence of others. In addition, establishing some basic protocols and boundaries in the home, such as using a crate and having appropriate “Play/Zoomies Zones” made for a safe home environment. If you would like to learn more about Puppy Critical Developmental Periods, or what’s happening inside your Dog/Puppy’s Mind, or how to teach the behaviors we WANT from our dogs, or even have a Major Problem Behavior you need help with, please call or email me at (808) 202-0897 or Sean@apetperspective.com.

Large alert eyes, set

wide apart, observe everything in this herding dog’s domain. First bred in England’s eighteenth century, today it is a popular breed, especially in sheep country where they still earn their living.

Border Collie

Their natural ability combined with breeding has created an animal who, when ”doing their thing,” performs a wonderful ballet. But without proper exercise this ballet can soon turn into destructive behavior. 30-40 lbs. 18-22" tall
