ALOHA! Oh, yeah, Summertime! Here we all are, enjoying the longer, languid, liquid days of summer in Hawaii. And here we are, publishers of Island Dog, reveling in the joy, love, and companionship that is sharing said summer with dogs. To wit: Our Da Kine Canine Photo Gallery is so chock-full-o’-pups that we had to add an extra page just to hold them all! Plus our Pups & Peeps gallery lets our readers share the page and the spotlight with their precious pets. Who’s cuter? Judge for yourself! Next up is “Dogs in the Great Outdoors,” so document the fab summer fun and share those pics! This issue is also chock-full-o’-fun info as Dr. Koreyasu of Kaka‘ako Pet Hospital illuminates the human-animal bond, which is now recognized as an integral factor in the health of both. Heidi Cregor expounds upon the virtues of the small but enthusiastic Kerry Blue Terrier Club of Hawaii. Suzy Tam of the Hawaiian Humane Society elucidates the process of reporting excessively barking or biting dogs. Niki Libarios explains the value of small businesses banding and growing together in the Hawaii Pet Business Network, which she founded. And the First Graders at Ka‘o-hao Elementary in Kailua want to share a music video they made when a classmate’s dog was overcome by heat exhaustion while hiking. All this, plus resident artists John Pritchett and Dan Van Zyle visually expressing the better sides of cats and Olde English Bulldogges, respectively (if not respectfully, John), makes for a hot summer mash-up that may well be the highlight of your season. It certainly is ours! As always, we are humbled by the kindness of your attention to our little dog rag in this most digital of ages, and for your thanking our advertisers when visiting their establishments for making this possible. Now go out and have your best summer ever! 14  ISLAND DOG MAGAZINE • SUMMER 2018

I Love My F-150!

—Kelly Boy DeLimaCheck Out This Lineup!

One of the things I really love about my F-150 is the back-up assist and rear view camera! It’s cool for backing up trailers, especially. You just navigate it with a little knob on the dashboard, and it makes backing in so much easier. Add in the Eco-Boost engine (which saves me so much money) and the aluminum body (no more rust, Hawaii!), and it’s easy to see why you need to come take a test drive on the Windward side and “Get Your Own Ford”! — Kelly Boy DeLima

Don’t Take

Your Dog! Dogs die every year on Oahu trails

D

ogs suffer more from heat because of basic biological differences. Dogs can’t sweat. They’re closer to the ground, where it’s hotter. And they’re so excited to go that they keep chugging along until they drop. Feather & Fur in Kailua sees up to 20 fatalities a year from heat exhaustion, and it’s mostly from folks taking their dogs hiking. So when a member of Vicky Villegas’ first grade class a Ka‘o-hao School (formerly Lanikai Elementary) lost Georgie after a trip up Ka‘iwa Ridge aka the Lanikai Pillbox hike, the class sprang into action. Actually, they sang into action. They wrote letters to warn others of the danger, and then wove parts of the letters Georgie together into a song. After recording, they made drawings to illustrate a video. The result is posted on YouTube and they hope to share it with as many folks as possible. Island Dog Magazine hopes you will enjoy it as well, and will share the message to save our pets from needless suffering. If you do take your dog hiking, be smart: • Start with easy hikes to gauge your pet’s fitness. • Go in the early morning or late afternoon. • Bring water and stop frequently to refresh your dog. • Be extra careful when exercising with shortnosed breeds, who are especially susceptible to stress from the heat.

Making Scents Work

At the First Wind wind farm in Kawailoa, Bodhi is on the scent with her handler Kyoko. 44  ISLAND DOG MAGAZINE • SUMMER 2018

We just keep finding new ways to put dogs’ wonderful noses to work. Recent applications point the way to monitoring our environment in more accurate and less invasive ways. STORY BY JOHN HARMON | PHOTOS BY TOR JOHNSON

found would be roughly equivalent to actual casualties found. But humans doing visual counts over the huge property were only able to find an average of 60% of the decoys. So they proposed using dogs to find the carcasses. The result: an 80-90+% success rate, depending on which dog and handler team was working. Next came a proposal from Dr. Michelle Reynolds, a wildlife ecologist researcher. She too had a challenge: Avian Botulism. Botulism exists in the environment as harmless bacteria. But in certain anaerobic situations (no oxygen, a dead bird, and heat), it goes into a rapid reproductive state. And the byproduct of this bacterial growth is a neurotoxin, which, when ingested, is virulent in birds, and especially ducks. In the National Wildlife Refuges of Hawaii, it creates an outbreak that imperils our endangered native waterfowl. The outbreak fells a feeding duck and it becomes paralyzed and dies from being unable to move, or simply drowns. Then flies lay their eggs on the carcass, producing maggots that feed on it and become toxin carriers. The maggots are unaffected by the toxin in their bodies and in fact concentrate it. Some of the maggots fall into the USFWS

K

yoko Johnson got into teaching nose work because of her dog Luka. He was a very Un-Golden like Retriever. Wouldn’t fetch. Didn’t like playing with other dogs. Wouldn’t swim. But she still thought he needed a hobby, just to give him something fun to do. She found the answer at the annual Association of Professional Dog Trainers conference when she saw a nose work demonstration that featured French Bulldogs and little Chihuahuas having a ball following their snouts. Kyoko invited the founders of the sport to come to Hawaii and exhibit their unusual training, and Luka was hooked. Just loved it. And he became so good at it that later, when he was old and blind, he maintained his confidence because of his heightened and trained sense of smell. By 2011, Kyoko began giving workshops in nose work in addition to her pet dog training. And then things started to get interesting. One of her attendees worked as a Biotech at the wind farm First Wind in Kahuku, and they had a situation. Their operating permit with the state required that they document the effect of the moving blades on native bats and birds. To make sure that the counts were accurate decoys were used, under the Koloa Maoli assumption that the (Hawaiian Duck) percentage of decoys

water and are eaten by invertebrates or fish (also unaffected concentrators) and, as nature has it, both of these carriers are happily eaten by other birds. This cycle of wildlife death has killed an average of 130 native Koloa Maoli (Hawaiian Ducks) a year in Kauai’s Hanalei National Wildlife Refuge alone according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The trick is to find the dead birds as soon as possible. And Michelle thought that trained detection K9s could help. The result was a fivemonth pilot project at the Hanalei NWF set up with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, starring Solo and Bodhi. Once again, the results were promising. This project, along with water infrastructure improvements by refuge staff working with the kalo farmers, has already resulted in an immediate decrease in the number and intensity of outbreaks. In case you’re wondering, it’s conceivable that humans and dogs could be affected by the neurotoxin if they ingested a whole lot. But people

46  ISLAND DOG MAGAZINE • SUMMER 2018

don’t usually feed on maggots in the wild, and the dogs are trained to sit or point when they find the scent they are searching for rather than retrieve the dead bird. To the canines Kyoko trains, it’s just a big, fun hunting game. What’s next for dogs and their amazing noses? Michelle has several ideas, including the detection of the fungus that causes Rapid Ohia Death to prevent its spread to other islands. Kyoko has visions of dogs helping with all kinds of invasive species from rodents (rats, mongooses) to the cannibalistic Rosy Wolf snails and

Jackson Chameleons who feast on the endangered Hawaiian Tree Snails. Does your dog have what it takes to become an odor discriminator? Surprisingly, Kyoko says, it takes all kinds. To work in large areas like the kalo fields and the wind farm requires a fairly athletic pup and it’s helpful when they have a strong, innate hunting drive. Others could be trained to find various kinds of scat (wild animal poop), or invasive plant species. And the best might just find themselves and their owners involved in real-life situations, working to preserve Hawaii’s fragile ecosystem.

Peace in the Neighborhood Dogs who engage in bad behavior or are incessant barkers can tear apart a neighborhood. The Hawaiian Humane Society explains steps you can take to restore peace and safety. BY SUZY TAM Communications & Community Events Manager, Hawaiian Humane Society

n any dog attack, the Hawaiian Humane Society suggests calling 911 first. The Honolulu Police Department are first responders and will be able to step in and help quickly. If you are injured, you should immediately go to the emergency room to receive medical care. If your pet is hurt, take him to an emergency veterinary clinic for treatment. The next step would be to call the Hawaiian Humane Society at 356-2250 to file a report. A humane investigator will take down the information, including any medical and veterinary records you may have. Reports are important as they provide a record of each incident an animal or owner may have. Depending on the outcome of the investigation, the owner may be cited for “Dangerous Dog”—any dog

which, without provocation, attacks a person or animal. A dog’s breed shall not be considered in determining whether or not it is dangerous. The injury must result in: 1. The maiming or causing of serious injury to or the destruction of an animal or 2. Bodily injury to a person other than the owner. Per City Ordinances, the penalties, if convicted include: 1. A fine of not less than $500 nor more than $2,000; except that if the offense occurred within five years of a previous conviction under this section, a fine of not less than

A period of imprisonment of up to 30 days, or in lieu of imprisonment, a period of probation of not more than six months in accordance with the procedures, terms and conditions provided in HRS Chapter 706, Part II; except that if the offense occurred within five years of a previous conviction under this section, a period of imprisonment of up to six months, or in lieu of imprisonment, a period of probation of not more than one year; 3. Restitution to any individual who has suffered bodily injury or property damage as a result of an attack by the dog where the individual suffers financial losses or medical expenses due to the attack. For the purposes of this subsection, medical expenses may include the costs of necessary counseling or rehabilitative services; and 4. Payment of all expenses for the boarding and retention of the dog if seized and impounded pursuant to Section 7-7.3(a).

Nuisance Barking

t’s against City and County of Honolulu law for a dog to bark constantly for 10 minutes or unprovoked for 30 minutes on and off, to the disturbance of others. If there is a dog in your neighborhood that is excessively barking, the Hawaiian Humane Society suggests that you first speak with your neighbor. Often, pet owners are away from home and are unaware their pet is causing a disturbance. If you have spoken to your neighbor and this doesn’t resolve the issue, an intervention from a mediation center can be the next step. We often suggest people call the Mediation Center of the Pacific to work on a solution regarding the barking dogs, rather than go to court. This promotes peaceful neighbors solving an issue by working together and helps to resolve conflict. If you’re still unable to arrive at a resolution, call Hawaiian Humane Society’s Rescue and Investigations team at 356-2250 for more help. A formal warning from the Hawaiian Humane Society will be sent out to Upon full investigation and finding the pet owner, followed with a citation of probable cause to believe that there should the nuisance continue.
