Tina—our Ever-Hungry Muse
Aloha! When we wrote this welcome page for Spring just three months ago, it was with a combination of joy and happy anticipation of the coming season. Our world has changed. But we still greet Summer with gratitude, as Hawaii’s covid crisis has seen far less disease and death than most other states. Our hopeful anticipation is that the worst is behind us. And, of course we have our loving, loyal and faithful friends—both human and canine. We will get through this, but not without casualties. The economic toll has already been brutal, especially in the local dog community. Mom and Pop pet shops, dog walkers and boarders, groomers and local artisans who make treats, toys and apparel are hurting. Please, if you are able, reach out to your favorites and support them with an appointment. If you or they aren’t yet ready, consider buying a gift card or certificate just to put a few dollars in their pockets and give them hope that they might survive. If we keep what little money we have amongst ourselves in Hawaii, we can make it. Our handsome Cover Boys, Zeus and Apollo aka The Lads, took time off from intimidating Magnum to grace our pages. We got an inside scoop of their life on camera from trainer and owner Sue Chipperton, who is also quite the photographer! Our photo galleries are replete with good dogs just waiting for you to say, “AAAaaaawww!” We also asked on our Facebook page how your pups were dealing with quarantine and have printed some of the best responses. Don’t forget to send us more pics for Fall! Bonnie Beatson shares how Windward Community College’s Vet Tech program has gone hybrid with classes online and labs on campus, while Stephanie Kendrick details new laws on mandatory microchipping and shorter hold times at the Hawaiian Humane Society. And while the Hawaii Pet Expo at the Blaisdell was a covid casualty, Keri Nakahashi reports on how she, Niki Libarios and Dr. Lissa Kam moved it online. Our Gifts & Sniffs section has many of the products that were featured and you can visit our website for a full list of participants at islanddogmagazine.com. All this, plus resident artists Dan Van Zyle and John Pritchett’s imaginings on beloved Bassets and avian canines, respectfully, make comfort food for the soul. Dogs Rule!

Sue Chipper ton
She made the the Taco Bell Chihuahua an A-list star. And the puppy and Clydesdales in the Budweiser Super Bowl commercials. And even the Aflac Duck. And now Sue Chipperton, with her 26 years of animal training experience and her passion for photography, wants to give your dog the star treatment as she resumes her pet photography business. Twenty-one years in Los Angeles working with the finest and most creative cameramen in the business gave her an appreciation of focusing on more than just the subject. Visual integration of the background into a complete statement is a constant theme running through her images. Or, as Peerspace.com puts it: “Sue’s photo shoot backgrounds are some of the best we’ve seen in the pet photography world, as she rarely relies solely on shallow depth of field for the “portrait look.” Her fine art expression is unmatched and part of her signature style.” For more information, visit www.chipperton.com.

Coronavirus Post-Quarantine Life for Dogs
A
n extended time at home means spending more time with our dogs than typical. It’s fair for any good dog owner to have some concerns regarding the changes their dog might experience when we go back to work after the coronavirus quarantine. How may they react to the disappearance of their human for no good dog reason? I get questions regarding “Canine Separation Anxiety” a lot, and the good news is that more often than not, it’s not anxiety at all. The misbehaviors are a result of a frustrated dog that is not getting all of its needs met. For example, maybe you were walking Fido daily and playing with him/her in the yard a lot more than you had prior to the shelter-in-place order. I mean what else was there to do?!?! And now that you have gone back to work (without Fido’s permission, I might add), the amount of weekly interaction with you has drastically decreased, resulting in a frustrated dog with a lot of pent up energy. A solution to this predicament would be to dedicate some time to Fido prior to going into work (Yes, this will require you to get up a little earlier). Give him the chance to burn off some energy before you depart for the day. And perhaps just before leaving, offer Fido a puzzle toy to keep his mind off of the fact that you just went through that same routine you do every day.
You may also notice your dog showing some anxious signals or behaviors while you’re getting ready for work. It’s like they know we’re going to be leaving soon! Dogs are creatures of habit, very much like many of us humans. In addition, they are hyperobservant of patterns, giving them an almost psychic ability to detect future behaviors of animals and humans alike. A suggestion for owners who are experiencing this would be to try mixing up your “Pre-Work” routine. Maybe you pick up your keys and grab your coffee mug right as you get dressed as opposed to right before walking out the door. There are many different methods to treating behavioral disorders related to Post-Quarantine life for dogs and every dog is unique. Give me a call to discuss your specific situation and the behaviors your dog is exhibiting, and we’ll schedule an initial evaluation to design a custom behavior plan for your dog’s specific needs.

fter working at Studio Animal Services in L.A. for over 21 years, Sue Chipperton made the leap to start her own company in Hawaii. Having worked on Godzilla and Jurassic World, she was plugged in to the local industry and was here when Hawaii Five-0 decided to add a canine companion: Hello, Eddie! Then CBS decided to restart another classic made-in-Hawaii series, Magnum P.I.: Hello, Apollo and Zeus, aka The Lads! The first year came together quickly, so Sue called a friend she worked with in Los Angeles (who serendipitously had an experienced studio Doberman) to help. She found some more Dobies on-island that she was able to get trained up enough to perform the necessary tasks of chasing bad guys and menacing Magnum. But when the show was renewed for a second season, she knew she needed 46 ISLAND DOG MAGAZINE • SUMMER 2020
a more stable cast. She decided on European Dobermans from an American breeder. They’re raised to be hyperobedient working dogs and prized for protection sports, which are like extreme police dog training. Now you might think training your pup to sit and stay is hard. Training for TV and film adds several more layers of distraction: Lights, Cameras, Action! Sue explains: “The very first time Apollo performed, he was in the wine cellar. He was supposed to come around the corner and find Magnum stealing a bottle of wine, and growl at him. And it was complicated because it was a “workaway” where I was actually standing behind him, off camera, and he was looking at Jay, not me. We did four takes, and he did it perfectly, but by the fifth take his enthusiasm was tapering off. He turned the corner and looked at

Magnum, and just had this moment of, ‘I don’t know...I think I’m done!’ “And until that point he was in the moment, with his focus and drive so intense, and Jay feeding him treats. But he suddenly turned and noticed the three cameras in the background with their operators and assistants like, ‘Who the heck are you guys?’ “So we quickly pulled him out and finished the scene with another dog. But at lunchtime, I asked a favor of the cameraman, ‘Could you come back on the set and just move the camera around while I work him?’ We didn’t want that moment to be the last thing he remembered. So we went through the scene a couple of more times and praised and treated him. And that way he’s happy to come back the next time, and the next.” So Sue trains Apollo and Zeus on the set as much as possible, even

when they aren’t filming, to get them used to that environment. Supportive actors help. Says Sue, “Jay and Perdita are amazing! I couldn’t ask for better people to work with.” That’s Hernandez and Weeks—you know, Magnum and Higgins. Beyond treating the dogs when the scene is cut, which is essential to canine concentration, they really enjoy being in the company of dogs. “They’ll do anything we ask, even, ‘Here, put these treats in your pocket and RUN!’” Life is pretty sweet with Apollo and Zeus living on Sue’s North Shore farm along with Eddie from Five-0 and a menagerie of animals. “Eddie and Apollo are inseparable, even sleeping with one’s head resting on the other. And Zeus hangs out more with my Shepherd. But they all love each other.” And we love seeing them on TV. Especially when they’re chasing Magnum. SUMMER 2020 • ISLAND DOG MAGAZINE 47

Windward Community College Vet Tech Hybrid Program Goes Statewide BY BONNIE BEATSON, WCC Marketing Communications Director
S
tudents from across the state can now pursue the Certificate of Achievement in Veterinary Assisting and an Associate in Science in Veterinary Technology at Windward Community College in a new hybrid program that combines online instruction and hands-on experience with live animals in a clinical setting. Windward CC has the only AVMA-accredited program for veterinary healthcare paraprofessionals in Hawai‘i. In addition, the hybrid program aligns with the Hawai‘i Graduation Initiative and Native Hawaiian Student Success Initiative. “Students who live on Kauai, Maui, Lana‘i, Moloka‘i and the Big Island will now have access to this specialized education,” said Vet Tech Program Director Jenny Kelly, DVM. Training includes pharmacology, radiology, anesthesiology, surgical assisting, dentistry, nutrition, exotic and large animal nursing, and veterinary office procedures. Students intern at two of 30+ independent clinics and shelters, working alongside industry professionals and networking for future employment opportunities. Current student Angel Visoria from Moloka‘i says she’s happy to have the opportunity to get an education on her island. “I am grateful for this amazing opportunity to be with my family and not uproot my entire life…I can stay with my family and still fulfill my dreams,” Visoria said. For prospective students living on Neighbor Islands who wish to become veterinary technicians, relocating to O‘ahu may not be possible due to family, work, and other obligations. Demand for the hybrid format has also increased from veterinary assistants currently working in veterinary clinics on O‘ahu who want to pursue the Associate in Science in Veterinary Technology but cannot afford to become a full-time student. “Our mission is to increase the quality of veterinary care in Hawai‘i by providing students with essential skills and knowledge that will enable them to obtain rewarding, living-wage jobs in the animal care field,” said Dr. Kelly.
How the Hybrid Program Works In the 8-semester (three-year) program students will receive rigorous coursework in a more relaxed schedule to allow time for work and family...designed to help students persist and graduate with their AS degree in Veterinary Technology. Lecture classes will be offered in an online format, and hands-on laboratory classes in a hybrid format. The hands-on AVMA-CVTEA Essential Skills will be completed in labs either at the Windward CC campus or at partner clinical facilities. Neighbor Island students will attend fast-track labs a minimum of three times during a semester. O‘ahu students will attend weekly face-to-face labs. Students enrolled in the hybrid program will work or volunteer part-time under the supervision of a veterinarian. Enrollment is limited to 12 Neighbor Island and 12 O‘ahu students for the Vet Assisting certificate, and eight Neighbor Island and eight O‘ahu students for the Vet Tech AS degree.
Students interested in enrolling in the fall are encouraged to attend an information session on June 25 or July 27 via Zoom to learn more about the program and career opportunities. To register for information sessions (free), email vettech@hawaii.edu. SUMMER 2020 • ISLAND DOG MAGAZINE 49
Mandatory Microchipping and Shorter Hold Times for Pets By Stephanie Kendrick Public Policy Advocate Hawaiian Humane Society
Several changes to Honolulu’s animal manufacturers by having their pets scanned at a veterinary clinic or animal ordinance take effect on July 1, welfare organization. embracing national animal welfare best practices and strengthening Stray Hold Times and Fees protections for island pets. Lost dogs and cats with identification Microchips Getting your dog to wear ruby slippers so they can heel-click their way back home if they get lost may not be realistic. Fortunately, there is something that works nearly as well: a microchip. All pet dogs and cats on Oahu will be required to have microchip identification. This is expected to greatly increase the number of reunions between lost pets and their families. While licenses have to be renewed and identification tags can be lost, microchips are permanent and readable at a multitude of locations islandwide. For them to be effective, however, pet owners must register their contact information with the microchip manufacturer and make sure that information is updated if it changes. Owners can get help identifying their pets’ microchip numbers and the chip 50 ISLAND DOG MAGAZINE • SUMMER 2020
who are admitted to the Hawaiian Humane Society will be held for a minimum of five days to allow their owners time to come forward and bring them home. After that period, stray animals will receive individual evaluations to assess their unique needs. Animals who are friendly and healthy will be made available for new homes as quickly as possible. Others will stay in the care of Hawaiian Humane, its foster care volunteers or other community partners to get treatment for health or behavior issues before being made available for adoption. Most owners, of course, pick up their lost pets immediately. More than 70 percent of animals with identification who are reclaimed by their owners go home within 48 hours, and that’s a great thing. The shelter is a crowded and stressful environment for animals. It puts them at risk for illness and
behavioral issues. Owners who reclaim their pets within 24 hours are not charged a hold fee. After 24 hours, owners will be charged $10 for each day their animals are in Hawaiian Humane’s care. Pet owners who will be traveling, particularly if they will be out of cell phone and email contact, should register the contact information of their pet sitter or veterinarian with the manufacturer of their pets’ microchips. That way there will still be a point of contact should their pets get lost.
Routine Strays Beginning July 1, dog owners will be penalized if their pets are routinely stray. While these measures will apply to a small number of cases, these animals represent a particularly vulnerable and potentially dangerous population. The new ordinance is designed to minimize the risks to animals and people, and encourage owners to keep their dogs safe, by: • Requiring the spay/neuter of any dog brought in as stray three times in a 12-month period. • Imposing an additional $30 penalty for any dog impounded as stray three times or more in a 12-month period. The mandatory spay/neuter of stray dogs is increasingly common around the country. Hawaiian Humane supported this approach because frequent strays are at grave risk of injury and death. They also have an outsized impact on pet overpopulation, perceptions of public safety and the
safety of other animals. Since fertile dogs are more likely to stray, it makes sense to include spay/neuter as one way to reduce the problem. Concerns about the spread of COVID-19 have complicated life for our entire community, of course, and some of the efforts Hawaiian Humane had planned to assist pet owners who still need to get their pets microchipped have been cancelled. But our team is committed to coming up with creative ways to meet this need. Please visit HawaiianHumane.org for the latest updates on microchipping opportunities. Be well and best wishes to the humans and pets in your families.

BELOVED ANNUAL EVENT goes virtual
During the pandemic the 2020 Virtual Hawaii Pet Expo connected pet parents and pet industry experts via Instagram and Facebook during National Pet Week, May 3-9.
Every Mother’s Day weekend thousands of pet lovers fill the Neal Blaisdell Exhibition Hall to visit local businesses and organizations at the Hawaii Pet Expo. It’s an event many of us look forward to all year long, so when it was canceled due to Covid-19 restrictions, Niki Libarios of Hawaii Doggie Bakery and I decided to host it virtually! Our goal was to provide a fun, stayat-home-friendly event that provided educational resources and fundraise for the Hawaii Food Bank. With the help of Dr. Lissa Kam and the Virtual Hawaii Pet Expo committee, over 50 participants came together and were featured during this weeklong event that also included live streams, tips from local vets, and lots of giveaways. During a time when we all felt a bit isolated, the Virtual Hawaii Pet Expo provided pet parents and the participants a way to connect with each other online through social media conversations and daily emails. The support we received from the community was very positive and I am so happy to have been a part of it! Mahalo to all the participants who made this possible.
