Summertime is a funner time with a canine or two! And Island Dog is the perfect accompaniment to your hot festive frivolity, starting with our Cover Boy: the jovial Julian, a very handsome edition of the notoriously good-looking pack o’dogs known as Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Nuggets has bits on telling tombstones and the Poop Fairy. Our Da Kine Canine gallery is full of furry friendly faces, plus some of your unfurry ones in Pups & Peeps. Be sure to share your 4LBFF for our fabulous fall issue, which will come out in late August! The Oahu SPCA has a new program to take care of your pet if you die, and we introduce a true Island dog to our shores from Vietnam. Anticipating a fearful Fourth for your dog? Check out our tips for easing the stress on both of you. Searching for a staycation, but can’t bear to leave the dog? We send intrepid reporters Lilikoi and Alfie to the cool Surfjack to get the Scoop on a wonderful dogwelcoming Hotel. Not to mention Gifts & Sniffs for summer is a fantastic four pages of fun and food. All this, plus resident artist John Pritchett revisiting his classic “Beach Dog” cartoon makes for a sizzling summer season indeed! As always, we are deeply indebted to you for the kindness of your attention in this most digital of Ages. And for barking thanks at our advertisers, for whom it is a nice scratch to know that their hard earned dollars are working. Mahalo!

SUMMER COVER DOG is my sunglasses-wearing, ’80s music-loving, all things old school enthusiast, and ride or die Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. He came into my life seven years ago as a little fluffy puppy and has shown me the true meaning of friendship and unconditional love. Julian went through training to become my PTSD Service Dog to help me manage combat-related post-traumatic stress disorder. I served in Kabul, Afghanistan, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom during my enlistment in the United States Army. He isn’t a fan when his other fur-siblings try to sleep next to me, is an unofficial professional nap taker, loves a good game of Bertha & Julian fetch, rarely turns down a tasty snack, and is always ready to go on new adventures together. He was diagnosed with Protein Loss Enteropathy (loss of protein from the intestines), which sadly caused scarring of his kidneys a few years ago. He has shown the doctors that you can’t keep a good dog down. He continues to live his best life every day, even if he can’t enjoy some of his favorite dog treats due to a strict diet. It’s hard to believe the powerful impact Julian has made in my life. He is there to lift me up when others have let me down and continues to be my biggest cheerleader...while always making sure to rock his favorite signature doggie sunglasses.

F-150 Rules Again! 2021
44 straight wins is the unbelievable streak that the Ford F-150 now holds as America’s favorite truck. And now the 2021 F-150 has been named the North American Truck of the Year because—well, we’ll let them tell you: “The F-Series is Ford’s crown jewel,” said freelance auto reporter, analyst and NACTOY juror John Voelcker. “The latest version refines the package, keeping what’s good, updating as needed, and delivering the right mix of features, capabilities, comfort, and style—with the added benefit of the first hybrid powertrain in almost a decade to debut in a full-size pickup truck.” Isn’t it time for you to take a ride to the Windward side and, like Kelly Boy says,“Get Your Own Ford!”?

Princess Was a Good Dog
nuggets
It seems the late 1800s were about when humans were letting pets into their homes and not just relegating them to the outdoors. Since cemeteries thought it unseemly to bury animals in graveyards with people, places with pet plots began popping up. These newcomers had no problem with interring Homo sapiens, btw. Hartsdale Pet Cemetery in New York was founded in 1896 and contains more than 80,000 remains of man’s best friends, be they dog, cat, lizard, lion, or other. And a survey of its tombstones undertaken by FirstVet reveals some interesting lexicon in the 115 years of epitaphs: Princess is the most popular name of all pets and for dogs in particular. Some other beguiling factoids arose from the grave research: Princess has consistently been a Top 10 most popular dog name since the ’60s, but has never ranked #1. And while America declared independence from the monarchy, Duke, King, and Lady often joined Princess in the Top 10 in the latter half of the 1900s, but none of them ever registered in England’s Top 10. Queenie ruled the ’30s, Tippy took the ’40s, Sandy saved the ’50s, Lady was loved in the ’60s, Brandy drank in the ’70s, and Max was the mightiest interred dog name from the ’80s thru the ’00s. A list of dogs buried in Hawaii would look much different, of course. Just ask Mochi, Miso, Hachi, Honey Girl, or Kimo.
Yes Virginia, There is a Poop Fairy
Poop Fairy Jane Frisch picks up poop along popular trails in Jackson.
Back in 2019, Jane Frisch of Jackson Hole, Wyoming got fed up with all the dog poop littering the Snake River levee on her way back from a ski. She took action by spending over an hour picking it all up. She continued her volunteer work occasionally donning wings and a pink tutu and really connected with folks. It turns out she wasn’t alone and by June with over 50 volunteers, the Poop Fairy Brigade kept trails clear. In addition to being gross to step in or ski over, dog poop can negatively impact the environment and pollute waterways. As the PF and Trail Ambassador, Frisch greets and educates hikers about trail etiquette and responsible dog ownership. Leading by example, she has encouraged hikers to do the right thing and pack out the poo as well pick up any orphan piles. The group effort has resulted in much cleaner trails for everyone to enjoy. Pet Assurance Program
BY STEPHANIE RYAN
Oahu SPCA’s program offers pet owners peace of mind regarding the care of their beloved pet for the rest of its life
R
ISTOCKPHOTO
Many people don’t have a trusted friend or relative to be appointed as guardian for their pet. Oahu SPCA’s Pet Assurance Program provides an innovative solution.
esponsible pet parents often plan for medical care for their pets in the future, but what about the fate of their animals should they predecease them? Pet Assurance, offered by the Oahu SPCA, is an innovative way to plan for the well being of your pets’ future in the event you can no longer care for them or predecease them. Oahu SPCA guarantees the health and care of your loving companion for the rest of its life. While it’s not something we like to think about, the truth is, companion animals end up in shelters every day or are not properly cared for due to the death of a pet parent. The stress of losing their caretaker and suddenly being homeless is nothing that we wish for our beloved pets. This was the case for a recent member of our Pet Assurance Program who unfortunately passed away a few weeks ago. With limited family members nearby, he turned to the Oahu SPCA to care for his beloved pet, Pika. He left aside funds in his estate planning for the Oahu SPCA to care for Pika, which allowed travel to Kauai to pick up this sweet 12-year-old. Pika is now in great hands, being loved and cared for at the Oahu SPCA and will either go into a foster home or be adopted into a new loving family. The Phu Quoc Ridgeback an ancient breed from Vietnam’s Phu Quoc Island
“I have never heard of that breed before!” is one of the more common phrases heard when the Phu Quoc Ridgeback breed is mentioned. Surely enough, the Phu Quoc Ridgeback finds itself in the category of “rare breed,” with few true examples documented outside of its home country of Vietnam. With its numbers dropping dangerously low after the war, this well kept secret of Vietnam is now seeing a revival. Breed enthusiasts and organizations such as the Phu Quoc Ridgeback Association are working to not only bring back the breed, but introduce it to the world. The Phu Quoc Ridgeback is an ancient landrace breed that developed on the island of Phu Quoc, just off the southern coast of Vietnam and

Cambodia. Weighing in at an average of 35 lbs, it is the smallest of three major ridgeback breeds including the beloved Rhodesian Ridgeback and the majestic Thai Ridgeback. Of course, it also shares the distinct ridge of fur down its back. Despite its smaller stature, the Phu Quoc Ridgeback is just as athletic and striking as any of its larger cousins. On their home island, they are famous Coat: Short and fine. Single-coated. Color: Black, Fawn, Brindle, Black & Tan Height: 16-24" Weight: 25-45 lbs
for both their intelligence and athleticism, and islanders will tell you that they often climb trees or go fishing to bring home food for their owners. As a primitive hunting breed, the Phu Quoc Ridgeback has quite a high prey drive. These instincts helped it hunt snakes and vermin, as well as wild deer, boar and buffalo on the island. As the breed travels to the United States and Europe as household companions, their skills are beginning to be aimed more at dog sports, with several representatives
of the breed already competing in lure coursing and FASTCAT events. Kira Hoang’s Phu Quoc Ridgeback, Kiwi, was the first of the breed to be brought to Hawaii but is not expected to be the last. She has plans in place to import more Phu Quoc Ridgebacks for her kennel, Blue Velocity Ridgebacks. “I’m very excited to introduce this breed to Hawaii. Being island dogs, I think they’ll fit our island lifestyle very well,” she says. Kira mentions that they are a special breed with unique personalities. “Anyone who wants to get into this breed should do their research first. They are a primitive type dog, so they think more independently than modern breeds. While this type of independence can be a learning curve for trainers and handlers, the dogs are very intelligent and easy to train.” With a dedicated and active owner, the Phu Quoc Ridgeback is a loving and adaptable companion. This unique cultural treasure of Vietnam is certainly a breed to look out for in Hawaii. SUMMER 2021• ISLAND DOG MAGAZINE 39

Dog Parks—The Good, The Bad and The Bitey When we humans daydream about our pups and other dogs, images of dog parks tend to be the first thing that come to mind; hosting numerous dogs of all shapes and sizes playing amongst each other with all the careless abandon of exuberant children. Unfortunately, not all dog park stories have such a blissful ending. CASE STUDY Patient: Kolohe, 1½ Year Old Goldendoodle Symptoms: Attacking other male dogs at the dog park; no injuries to Patient or other dogs but owner is fearful of potential dog fights. Reactive on leash; charging, lunging and snapping at other dogs. Diagnosis: Through detailed investigation and history gathering with Kolohe’s owners, we uncovered information that contributed to the perceived aggression and shed light on the origin of the problem behaviors. Kolohe’s owners were understandably eager to get him out as soon as he got all of his puppy shots to socialize with other dogs, to make friends, and to get his exercise. With the “All Clear” from his veterinarian, they started taking him to the local dog park 4-5 times weekly. Initially Kolohe seemed to thrive and enjoy being around the other dogs at the park, up until about 10-11 months old when he and another large male got into a scuffle. As they continued their weekly dog park routine, insisting that Kolohe loved the park, they often ran into the same dog and noticed a pattern where the other male would constantly steal Kolohe’s toy and stare him down. This created a socially nervous dog who was constantly on edge when around other dogs. He could not escape, or find safe refuge. The resulting behavior was an aggressive approach to any other male dog in order to maintain his ability 44 ISLAND DOG MAGAZINE • SUMMER 2021
to keep his toy (in his mind). This translated to other dogs outside the park and while on leash due to the same lack of ability to escape. Solution: Some dogs simply aren’t “Dog-Dogs”— they are not the social butterflies we so desperately want them to be. But it’s up to us to respect that and to help meet their needs. After bringing in a few members of A Pet Perspective’s Pack for investigation, we saw very clearly that his true desire was social interaction with his humans, with no inclination to seek out other dogs for play. He simply wanted to know he wouldn’t have his toys stolen when other dogs were present. Continuing Kolohe’s rehabilitation, we were able to instill a sense of confidence by allowing him the opportunity to socialize in an environment where the other dogs had good social etiquette and by teaching his owners how to read behavioral cues that predicted his mental and psychological state. If you’d like to learn more about how to decode your dogs behaviors, what’s happening Inside your Dog’s Mind, how to teach the behaviors you WANT from your dog, or have a Major Problem Behavior you need help with, please call or email me at (808) 202-0897 or Sean@apetperspective.com.

4th of July Pet Safety Who doesn’t love the sight of explosions, the smell of gunpowder, and the boom of aerials on the 4th of July? Well, most dogs. And for some it can be truly traumatic, which is why more pets go missing than on any other day. So we have some suggestions to prep your pup for the coming cacophony. Before the Impending Roar Expect some celebrants to get trigger happy, so be ready the week before. Have up-to-date ID tags and microchip info in case Da Kine bolts. Scanning a microchip is one of the most reliable ways to reunite a lost pet with their owner, and Honolulu has now decreed that you must register your pet’s info with their microchip’s manufacturer or a free online service like 24PetWatch.com or FoundAnimals.org. Your vet probably has the info if they installed the chip, or any vet can read it for you, but it is your responsibility to register them. Up-to-date contact information is vital. Check your perimeter for any new holes or escape routes. Make sure your gates latch securely. If you know your dog will need a sedative, order it early from your vet. CBD oil, melatonin and pheromones all have varying degrees of effectiveness and are available at pet stores. Try them out a week or two in advance to see how your pal reacts. Get a ThunderShirt or anxiety wrap, which calms by snugness. Dr. Temple Grandin recommends putting it on for 20-30 minutes and then taking a break for the same amount. On your dog, silly! The Day Of Your dog takes cues from you, so don’t overreact to fireworks— odd, sure, but not worth getting excited about. An anxious,
ISTOCKPHOTO
clingy human can create an equally needy pet, so stay calm. If possible, get her out for a romp with friends or a long walk to take the edge off. But remember—someone will be jumping the gun on detonations so keep them close. Find the quietest, least-illuminatedby-fire-in-the-sky place to keep him. Turn on the TV or Echo for white background noise and distraction. Some dogs like to be cuddled when stressed, while others are more stressed by the attention. You’ll figure it out. Go back to puppy training with sit/stay/come commands and the appropriate treat rewards and maybe fill the old Kong toy with something really special. A crate and a long-lasting chew are your friends. If you are hosting, make sure all of your guests are aware of the dog and are careful not to leave any open gates or doors. If you don’t crate, it may be better to let him find his own place to shelter in the house rather than challenging him to find a way out of his lonely room. As we emerge from long months of quarantining, expect some extra joyous celebrations with family and friends. A little bit of extra attention and effort ahead of time will ensure your pets can enjoy the celebration safely. SUMMER 2021• ISLAND DOG MAGAZINE 47

An alluring oasis in Waikiki is calling to you and your dog
here is a huge difference between a place that merely allows dogs, and one that really wants them. We sent intrepid reporters Lilikoi and Alfie to sniff out the story on this little gem in Waikiki, where they were greeted by Jack, the 6-month old French, English Bulldog who serves as the Hotel Dog and Canine Concierge. When The Surfjack was built in the ’60s, it was one of the tallest buildings around. Now dwarfed by larger inns and national chains, it was redesigned and rebranded in 2016 with a fresh, open look

The marketing strategy also changed to be more accessible to locals who normally don’t want to go into the Waikiki jungle.
