SUMMER 2022• ISLAND DOG MAGAZINE 13

ISTOCKPHOTO.COM

Summer Fun has surely begun! And we here at Island Dog, the Magazine, are full of the kind of warm vibes and ocean joy you’ve come to expect. It starts with Cover Boy Alfie, who is the muse for a very amused local photographer, Kelli Bullock Hergert. Our Da Kine Canine Gallery is bubbling over with great shots of your captivating canines, and the Pups & Peeps section shows both owners and pets together. Do they really look alike, as the legend says? That’s for you to decide, dear readers. Next up: Dogs in the Great Outdoors! So document your pal’s adventure at the park, the beach, a trail, or even his own backyard and share. We like see! We happily announce the return of the SurFur competition to the Duke’s Oceanfest in August. Wagging tails on waves—what’s not to love? We alert you to the new Cancer Project at Darwin’s Ark, a nonprofit that seeks understanding of dog behavior and illness through massive online participation of pup owners just like you. And we chronicle the exploits of Lynyrd, the North Shore’s Golden Submariner. Finally, when we send cover dog Alfie and his gal pal, Hoku, to the White Sands Hotel, enjoyment exudes from the photos taken by the aforementioned Kelli. Longtime readers may recall that last summer Alfie also checked into the Surfjack Hotel for a little R&R (Vol. 14.2). Waikiki is now the most fun place to stay with your furball and very reasonable with the discounts you’ll find in their ads. So go! All this, plus resident artist John Pritchett’s expository take on a Doggy Dream Park, makes for a glaringly hot edition of our little dog rag. WARNING: You better wear shades! As ever, we are humbly grateful for the kindness of your attention in this most digital of ages, and for reminding our advertisers that you see them here in these pages. It’s the circle of life for a 15 year old freebie, and you are our Simba. Mahalo. Woofs & Wags, John and Carol

SUMMER COVER DOG

lfie is an 11 year old poi-dog mix. I adopted him from the Hawaiian Humane Society in 2019. He was a stray, and he fit into my life immediately and has been my ever-so-patient photography muse. You may have seen him as Mr. May in the 2021 HHS Pets in Paradise Calendar! From day one, he was fully trained, well-behaved, social and active; it’s easy to forget that he is a Senior. People that we meet always ask if I’ve had him since he was a puppy. My constant companion on many fun outings and adventures, Alfie especially loves exploring along the beach. He will sit nicely on a paddleboard with me on rivers and canals, but doesn’t love the water enough to hang out in the surf. He enjoys gentle hikes with his doggo friends, and of course, sleeping on our bed. Salmon jerky treats are his favorite! – Kelli Bullock Hergert

Return of SurFur Tails Island Dog Magazine is thrilled to welcome back the Going to the Dogs SurFur ComPETition (GTDSC) at Duke’s OceanFest, featuring a new sponsor, Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers! Since 2015, the SurFur Competition has been Hawaii’s only animal aquatic tournament featuring dogs, pigs and even a duck. Contestants from here in Hawaii and also the mainland showed up to compete for furred and feathered glory in front of throngs of appreciative spectators. Everything was going great. But in 2020, the meets were yet another victim of the Covid Crisis. This fun competition is finally back and open to all ages. Participants are required to be intermediate surfers or paddlers (or better), and all animals must be accustomed to being in the water and on the boards and enjoy being in the water with their humans.

Be part of the world’s largest pet citizen science project

CANCER PROJECT

D

arwins’ Ark is a collaborative scientific initiative bringing together the best minds in genetics, medicine and behavior—including pet owners, who know their pets better than any scientist ever could. Darwin’s Dog Project exists to further understand the genetic influences on how dogs look and behave. They ask questions about canine behavior and about the genes controlling all sorts of canine traits, from size to coat color to shyness to interest in play. This is a very long term study, and hopefully the findings will help to better understand how genetics affect dog personality, health and sensitivities. To do this study, they need a massive number of dogs (purebreds and mutts), and they’re asking for our help! Their new Cancer Project is a standalone study to address this critical health problem that affects the lives of so many pets and people. They’ll be studying how environment and genetics affect cancer risk while developing new technologies, like blood biopsies, which will improve the detection and treatment of cancer in dogs and in people. And while these potential treatments won’t be available to any of the dogs taking part in this initial study, our dogs’ genetic contributions and our survey answers will be key in helping scientists forge new paths to treatment modalities and recovery. The Cancer Project is open to any dog who has cancer now or had it in the past.

All dogs—purebred and mixed breed— are welcome to participate whether just diagnosed, currently undergoing treatment, or in remission. Dogs with any type of cancer are qualified to enroll without any specific testing or treatment. Participants are also invited to join the Darwin's Ark Cancer Project Community Group on Facebook. In this group, animal behavior consultants and scientists from the Cancer Project will help with discussion about the science, your dogs, and ways to bring extra good things to them during this troubled time in their lives. By studying cancer in dogs, the aim is to help both pets and their people live long, healthy lives. Visit darwinsark.org to sign up and learn more from FAQs. Other projects include Darwin’s Working Dogs, Project Acari (tracking ticks) and coming soon Darwin’s Cat Project. The Darwin’s Ark Foundation, established in 2015, is a registered non-profit organization. It is a proponent of the Open Science model and does not own or sell your pet’s data. Your contributions to an open source database are freely shared with researchers around the world...and you. The Darwin’s Ark project is staffed by members of the Karlsson Lab at the UMass Medical School and the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, and the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants (IAABC). gentle trade wind breeze of Hawaii Hey Days blows through the White Sands Hotel in Waikiki. Built in the 50s, it’s been completely renovated in the style of how people think of the surf ‘n’ sands era before the high rises—a knowing wink at kitsch with all of the amenities and pleasantries of a modern hotel. And they love dogs! When you call

or go online to make reservations, say the magic promo code word, DOG, and you’ll open a raft of pawsitive possibilities, including a very special room rate, a waiving of the usual dog fees, and a welcome packet of treats, plus bowls for food and water. dogs, please. You know who you are. So we sent our intrepid report dogs—Alfie and Hoku—to spock the joint for you, gentle readers. What they found: Fun and relaxation with a retro cool vibe. It starts on the street. No big flashing signs, just a low key street level sunburst with “White Sands” in a classic Tiki typeface. Which only hints at the fun inside. A covered walkway festooned with starlights leads into the lobby, which is decked out in bamboo trim with a lava rock facade. Hey Day Bar, Waikiki’s swingin’est!

Hoku, Poolside Diva

“I can get used to this!”

Koa furniture with bright floral-printed cushions and living room lamps straight outta 60s pop art. Now it may seem like that’s a very small lobby, and it would fill up quickly. But it doesn’t, because it’s only 20 paces to poolside, and 50 more to the swingingest bar in Hawaii. That’s where everyone hangs out. Poolside is also the dining room for the restaurant, meaning casual dining (and drinking) are taken to the max. Or you can eat at any of the fabulous restaurants in the waaay more expensive big hotels (go ahead, treat yourself since you saved all that cash

on the room). But between the Chicken Satay and Vegan Lumpia pupus, the Smoked Ono and Bacon sandwich and Schnitzel and Steak Diane entrees, plus Caramelized Pineapple Turnover and Haupia Cheese Flan for dessert, home base for your staycation is covered. Plus your room has a wet bar with mini refrigerator, sink and microwave. Past the bar is a peaceful oasis with a waterfall, koi pond and nice semisecluded spots to socialize, and even a hot tub with waterfall for a different water experience. The rooms are good sized, with firm

but forgiving mattresses, TV, Wi-Fi, eraappropriate accoutrement and art, plus the aforementioned wet bar. Waikiki is becoming the best place for locals to take a break with their pups, and the White Sands Hotel is waiting for you with a wagging tail.

ynyrd is a Goer. Humom Kali Retzler has taken him hiking, boating, rock climbing, and even on airplanes without trepidation. But at the beach, he experienced so much more: This two year old Golden Retriever loves the ocean. He started out just tailing mom into the water, patiently circling above as she snorkeled below. But one day, he decided to follow. Down. Yes indeed, Lynyrd is a diver! Kali was startled at first, then intrigued, then apprehensive. Could he be hurting himself? Might he develop ear problems? Luckily, she works at the Hale Ola Pet Hospital and she was able to share videos of her diving dog with Dr. Bader.

Upon careful scrutiny they realized that at a depth of about 10 feet he would do some adjustment with his jaw so that, just like humans, he could equalize the pressure. Relieved, Kali now happily tosses Lynyrd’s black, blue and white solid rubber bone—the kind that sinks— into the water, and the Big Fella happily fetches. Well, that and a few other things. He loves to go on scavenger hunts and has returned with rocks, face masks, a snorkel, fins, and even a wallet with credit cards. You can catch all of the further adventures of Lynyrd and Kali on Instagram and TikTok— @leaveherwild96. SUMMER 2022 • ISLAND DOG MAGAZINE 51

Plan Ahead for Your Pet’s Safety ISTOCKPHOTO

START EARLY and STOCK UP

Disaster Preparedness Hurricane season runs from June through the end of November. In the event of evacuation for a hurricane or other disaster, residents and pets should come prepared with a pet disaster preparedness kit — shelters do not stock supplies.

Hawaii has dodged major hurricane events these past few years. But don’t be complacent! As we emerge from the covid crisis there are still supply chain issues, so start early and stock up. Your pet kit should include: • Pet crate/carrier • 14 day supply of Food and Water. • Medication/Pet First Aid Kit and veterinary info and records. • Identification ID tag on a collar, microchipping & current photo. • Collar and leash/harness • A comforting toy, bedding, treats and towel • Hygiene, grooming and sanitation supplies No one should be left behind if you don’t feel safe in your home! If evacuation is not necessary and you can shelter in place, the family pet should be kept inside away from wind, noise and breaking glass and/or in a crate.

Serving West Oahu

Where to Shelter According to the Department of Emergency Management, City and County of Honolulu, all Oahu evacuation shelters are considered pet accommodating. Monitor local media and official social media sites for specifics and updates. Based on the type of disaster and other circumstances, not all shelters will be open and facilities other than those listed may be used. Stay informed at: honolulu.gov/DEM, Facebook: @OahuDEM, and Twitter: @Oahu_DEM.
