Happy Howlidaze!
Aloha! This much we know: adding a dog (or 3) to the festivities makes for a most wonderful celebratory season. And we are excited to present this joyous edition of Island Dog to brighten your winter, starting with the personable Penny, shot by Ashley Smith. Penny’s parents sent in her pic for our gallery and she was so cute we had to have her as our Cover Girl! Our Da Kine Canine Photo Gallery is chock full of your Bon Mutts, and the All Dressed Up section is a bountiful feast of sartorial splendor. Next up is Puppies! So send in those kid pics, even if your hound is all growed up—they’re all cute! We update the decades-long struggle to establish a dog park on the windward side and Alli Kim-Yamane details the goals of Calvin & Susie’s new foundation to help Hawaii’s dogs and cats in need. Niki Libarios of Hawaii Doggie Bakery serves up 7 Tips for haute pawty planning and we look back at a very active fabulous fall quarter and look forward to 2018, the Year of the Dog! Does it get any better? Why yes, it does, as lastly but not at all leastly, resident artists John Pritchett and Dan Van Zyle present visual presents musing why there’ll never be a Year of the Cat and the steadfast loyalty of the Boxer, respectively. And now, fellow dogfriend, we humbly thank you for the fortieth time for the kindness of your attention to our little dog rag in this most digital of ages and for your support of our advertisers (be sure to tell them you saw them here!). Be safe and happy this holiday season and always in the company of dogs! Happy Happy, Merry Merry, and Peace, Peace Peace!

oof, arf, rawr! Translation: Aloha! My name is Penny Brown and I’m from Waianae, Hawaii. I am 16 months old and am a long-haired, miniature dachshund. I live with my mom (my trainer and best friend) and my dad (my personal photographer and treat dispenser). People like to describe me as cute, sassy, and vocal, which I can’t disagree with. I love eating lots of snacks, doing zoomies (running back and forth), and digging in the sand at the beach. But my ultimate favorite thing ... All we need is making sure all my humans are safe

by being the best guard dog ever and making sure they are loved everyday. My parents tell me the story of how they almost adopted my sister instead of me. They saw a photo of us from a friend and Mom said she wanted to adopt my sister. How rude! But luckily, Dad had the right sense and made the final decision to adopt me. When I first met them, they were surprised at how calm I was. The first thing I did when I got to my forever home was sleep on the couch. It was as if I was made for my parents. We love to nap, play, and go to the beach all the time. Mom is working on getting me certified as an emotional support dog. My first human sister is due to arrive in December. I am so happy that I am able to calm Mom down and I can’t wait for my mini human’s arrival. The doggie community in Hawaii is made up of so many kind-hearted people and doggies and Instagram has been a great outlet for my parents to practice their photography and connect to the doggie community. With this tool, I’ve been able to go on many play dates, visit many dog friendly locations around Oahu, and meet other fur friends from all over the world. If you’d like to keep updated with my daily adventures, you can find me at @pennydoxie. Thanks again to my parents, Nicki and Chad Brown, for picking me instead of my sister! Whew, that was close! The Kawai Nui Neighborhood Park at Kaha Street in Kailua has seen a proliferation of dogs and their owners using park space where families and children play and practice sports, creating some discord. In recent months Kailua police have been issuing citations to dog owners caught with their dogs roaming off-leash at the park. This points to the dire need for a dedicated park for dog owners and their dogs.
Progress on Future Windward Dog Park
The Windward Dog Park Hui (WDPH) is making progress in its efforts to establish an off-leash dog park in Windward Oahu. On Sept. 21, the Hui addressed a large crowd of dog lovers at Kailua Rec Center sharing some of its history, accomplishments and goals. Among those attending were Representative Chris Lee and Andrew Malahoff, senior aide to Councilman Ikaika Anderson, both of whom reiterated the commitment of Windward state and city officials to establishing a dog park. “This is about quality of life,” said Lee, who this past legislative session co-sponsored a resolution advocating for more than one dog park. “It’s an issue where we are all in agreement.” For nearly two decades Windward residents have tried to open a dog park without success. But the increase in dogs in neighborhoods and the lack of space to walk them prompted a group of Windward dog owners to take matters to city hall and try again. For the last three years WDPH has worked diligently, contacting state and city officials, canvassing potential sites, collecting thousands of signatures in support, organizing fundraisers and participating in dog-related events. The effort paid off. On May 10 the Honolulu City Council adopted a resolution requesting the Department of Parks and Recreation to study the feasibility of building a dog park at one of two city-owned sites: a parcel at Kalaheo Hillside, and one next to Bayview Golf Course. In addition, it appropriated $100,000 towards the building of the park. Once a site is selected, WDPH plans to enter into partnership with the city for the building, maintenance and operation of the dog park. The Hui has also garnered the support of the Kailua

and Kaneohe neighborhood boards, the Hawaiian Humane Society and Hui ‘Ilio, founders of the Hawaii Kai dog park. Janine Tully, president of WDPH, sees a dog park as benefiting not only dogs, but the community at large. “As communities get bigger we will start losing green space in our urban areas,” Tully said. “Residents of all ages need a welcoming, safe place to gather and talk story—with or without dogs. The fact that the city council has taken our efforts seriously is very exciting.”
A 2015 survey conducted by the Hawaiian Humane Society found that nearly half of Oahu households have a pet dog. For more information : Windward Dog Park Hui on Facebook or email windwarddogpark@gmail.com

Pawty 7 Tips for Throwing a Pawsome Doggie Pawty BY NIKI LIBARIOS Co-owner of Hawaii Doggie Bakery
It is truly pawsome seeing people celebrate their four-legged family member’s special day. Birthdays are obvious, but there are so many reasons to Paw-TAY, like Adoptaversary, Bark Mitzvah, Puppy Showers, Bark-B-Ques, Holidays and other celebratory occasions. Here are seven tips for doing something really special this year—something to show your pup how much you love him.
1
Size and Venue What will work best for your dog? Is your dog the gregarious type in a crowd or more comfortable with a small family group? To have the best day ever, make sure your dog is compatible with every person and dog who will be attending. Consider a playdate prior to the big day for socialization. Do an at-home party out in the yard or by the pool, or go large at a venue for a memorable doggie soiree. Ask your daycare/boarding spot if they have a place. If not, try Poi Dog Daycare for an indoor area and help with theme, decorations and activities, or Kamaaina K9 Adventures for ample room to host a lively outdoor event.
2
Invitations Although E-card invitations are easy and fun, why not go big by sending a custom designed invitation? Get an early start with a professional pet portrait and create an attention-grabbing invite to build anticipation. Work with a local printer or one of the popular sites online.
VenueS • Poi Dogs Daycare 536-4443 poidogdaycare.com • Kamaaina K9 Adventures 594-2484 kamaainak9.com INVITATIONS • Locally Kinko’s or Professional Image can output your custom invite and related collateral

Pawty Attire Paper party hats are always awesome, but to really get decked out, upgrade to handmade, custom accessories! Buster’s Party Shop on Etsy sells glitter hats, crowns and even Unicorn Horns for dogs. Custom bandanas by Koa Bear Bandanas on Maui use unique fabrics and embellishments and can even have the birthday dog’s name on it!
4
Decorations For over-thetop pawties, decorations are a must! Celebrations with a theme are usually the easiest to find decorations for, like mermaid, pirate, Minions—anything that’s good for kids will be cute with dogs.
5
Games & Activities What’s a pawty without games? Our favorites are Musical Mutts (like Musical Chairs—when the music stops all dogs must sit!) and playing with bacon-flavored bubbles. Raise the bar for your pawty by hiring an artist, performer or even pet communicator to really engage your guests. And their humans, too, of course.
6
don’t forget the goodie bags! Put your own together by selecting the perfect mini treats and toys. You can even have personalized pawty favors with your dog’s picture on it. And don’t forget the humans — keep a stash of munchies and ageappropriate beverages on hand.
7
Pawty Cake Last but not least, don’t forget The Cake! Splurge and order a Specialty Cake made for your dog. Hawaii Doggie Bakery can customize a cake to match your party, whether it’s Princess or Unicorn, Luau or Under the Sea, and we really enjoy sharing ideas to make your pawty special! A pawsome pawty takes time and effort, so start early. Your doggie shindig will be the talk of the Hound Town!

ver since our Kapahulu store opened at the end of 2010, we have tried to do what we can to assist the smaller rescues and fosters in our community. These are individuals and organizations that work under the radar, without fanfare, with their own money and very little outside funding. We donated some supplies and food but always wanted to do more. In July of this year, we started Calvin & Susie Hawaii Animal Foundation or CSHAF. CSHAF is a volunteer, non-profit 501(c)(3) charitable organization that operates mainly on Oahu. In cooperation with other rescues, fosters, Trap-Neuter-Return programs, and smaller shelters in our state, we offer aid and support towards the humane care, medical assistance, rehabilitation, and rehoming of animals in need. CSHAF advocates for population control through spay/ neuter, feral cat colony care, and educating the public about responsible pet ownership. Our goal is to reduce the number of pets in shelters and to minimize unnecessary euthanasia. Since our inception, over 50 spay/neuter surgeries and nine medical assistance cases have been sponsored. It is heartbreaking to see families in financial distress having to give up or put down their beloved pets because they cannot afford a medical procedure. As a fledgling organization our resources are very limited, but with the community’s support we can help those in need.
Named for our “Patron Pooches,” Calvin and Susie, animal well-being has always been our guide and our goal.
Calvin & Susie Hawaii Animal Foundation is entirely run by volunteers. Our dream will only truly be realized when the shelters are empty and every pet has a home. Because of this, we are always looking for people who are willing to donate their time to improving the lives of animals in our Hawaii community. No matter what your skill set, if you’re passionate about helping animals, there’s a way you can volunteer. To get involved contact: info@cshaf.org or visit cshaf.org/community To donate visit: cshaf.org/donate or cshaf.org/shop. Your donation is tax deductible. WINTER 2017 • ISLAND DOG MAGAZINE 51
