ASHLEY SMITH
Aloha! Generous moods, wonderful foods, constellations of celebrations and of course, warming trends with our furry friends…Happy Howlidaze, Dog Lovers! And boy, do we have a festive treat for you, starting with our Cover Girl, Lilikoi. She and Sistah Rella graced our first Howlidaze cover back in 2008, and she is still keepin’ up da cuteness. And speaking of cute, our Da Kine Canine gallery is full of fresh photos, and the All Dressed Up gallery is a jam packed jamboree of frivolity. Next up is PUPPIES, so send in those snaps of youngsters, even if they’re oldsters now. We still like see! November is Adopt a Senior Dog month, and we’ve got a love story shared by Wendy Lum that expresses the joys of opening your heart and home to a largely forgotten segment of available animals. Denise Laitinen gives some timely advice for saving you and your pup from a holiday vet visit. And we wrap up the Duke’s Oceanfest Surfur Competition like a present from your favorite Auntie—oh, so colorful and fun! All this, plus resident artists John Pritchett and Dan Van Zyle festooning holiday outfits and Germany’s own Great Dane, respectively, makes for a merry, mirthful and marvelous edition, indeed. As we finish our 12th year of publishing, we are ever mindful of and grateful for the kindness of your attention to our little dog rag in this most digital of ages. And, when visiting our advertisers, for your mentioning that you saw them in these pages. Let’s do another twelve years! May your New Year be filled with fun, friends and fur.

WINTER COVER DOG
We are delighted to have Lilikoi return to light up our 48th edition of Island Dog Magazine ! November is “Adopt a Senior Dog” month, and we can’t think of a better example of a disarmingly charming cutie to represent all older canines. Lilikoi is a Pomeranian/Papillon mix who just turned 16 in September. After appearing with mom Kathy in the Da Kine Canine Gallery in our very first magazine in Spring 2008, Lilikoi and her sister Rella 16 ISLAND DOG MAGAZINE • WINTER 2019
PHOTOS: ASHLEY SMITH
Lilikoi returned 3 issues later to grace our cover for Happy Howlidaze. While we can take the credit for “discovering” them, they’ve became some of the most recognizable island pups on Instagram (lilikoi_rella) and Facebook (Lilikoi & Rella) through the Power of Positive Posing. They’ve also been in Coastal Living and Honolulu magazines, and are the cover girls of two 2019 calendars—I Paw Hawaii and Paws in Paradise. Lilikoi’s favorite place is the beach, where she’s always a bundle of energy and fun. She loves to dig, dig, dig in the sand, and always finds a stick so she can fetch, fetch, fetch. Rella recently crossed the Rainbow Bridge, but we know she is wagging her tail and sending lots of kisses, love and good wishes to her sister and you, the readers of Island Dog Magazine.

An Affair to Remember By Wendy Lum Puppies may be adorable and hard to resist, but adopting an older large breed dog will give you a whole other level of satisfaction. And you could save a life that has been given up on. Bella, nine year old German Shepherd
Bella and Wendy
I
must admit I have had three affairs already and am on my fourth one…with a German Shepherd. I am an advocate of adoption and giving dogs a forever loving home, especially big elderly dogs. Why? Because larger and older dogs are harder to place, often overlooked as people seek out puppies. My family has always had a special love for German Shepherds/mixes. I have been blessed to have three German Shepherd mixes adopted from the Humane Society in the past, all whom are now in heaven. Mei Ling and Daisy were adopted as puppies, but Angel as an adult. Over a year ago I got Bella, a purebred German Shepherd from Geneva’s Phoenix Rescue Shelter in Waianae.* Why go into an affair with a larger older dog? Because it is worth it! Even though they might have baggage, what you get in return is unconditional love. Bella is a perfect example of this. She was eight years old when we got her and was abused the first five years of her life and had gone through two foster families before coming to us.

NOVEMBER IS ADOPT A SENIOR DOG MONTH
ISTOCKPHOTO
When she first arrived she was so quiet. It took us awhile to bond emotionally because I was still grieving for Angel, who passed away a month before. A year into my affair with Bella we have grown as a family. Even at nine, she still has a puppy spirit— playing with the water hose, going on hikes, long walks, car rides, and planting kisses daily. Knowing that she is in her forever home, she can now relax anywhere and romp in our large yard. Having her is a blessing from above! Another good thing about an older dog is that you skip the puppy stages of chewing and housebreaking, etc., and get a dog that is already trained and ready to be loved! She also makes a great pillow or foot rest, body warmer, and friend who doesn’t ever answer back. German Shepherds do need good hygiene and vet care, since their skin can be sensitive, but they are quick learners, good watch dogs, and loyal companions. I hope that you can give a furry friend another chance of life. It took Bella three tries before she found hers. The rewards of adopting a larger elderly dog are priceless and you will soon learn it is actually an affair you will always remember.
Don’t have the energy to raise a rambunctious puppy or younger dog? Consider adopting an old soul. 1. Senior dogs in shelters need homes just as much as the younger dogs, but are often overlooked. They still have a lot of love to give and receive. 2. Don’t assume that a senior dog has some kind of “problem.” 3. Senior dogs are often trained and familiar with basic commands. 4. Being older they are calmer and this means less destruction in the home. 5. Older dogs are ready to be your pal, offer support and unconditional love and loyalty. And yes, they know and are most grateful for a second chance. If you are interested in a certain breed, do research and learn their characteristics. At the shelter spend time to evaluate their personalities and be alert to any behavioral quirks. Be aware that senior dogs may have some additional health issues so ask questions. If you are 55 years or older, the $55 adoption fee is waived for adopting a dog six years or older at the Hawaiian Humane Society.

“A holistic approach to canine behavior”
Holiday Canine Safety By Denise Laitinen
No one likes saying they spent their Thanksgiving or Christmas at the vet’s office. A few simple safety steps are well worth it if they mean your holidays are filled with fun memories instead of stress and anxiety.
Food No-Nos for Dogs Dogs love table scraps. But that doesn’t mean you should give them a sample of everything on your Thanksgiving table. And if your house guests don’t own dogs, they may be unaware of the consequences of feeding them certain foods. Let your guests know the rules and don’t let them give your pet toxic foods or alcohol “just this once” or “for the holiday occasion.” The biggest issue with many popular holiday foods is that when ingested by dogs it results 46 ISLAND DOG MAGAZINE • WINTER 2019
in pancreatitis, an inflammation of the pancreas. Mild cases produce vomiting, pain, and dehydration while more serious cases require hospitalization. That’s why groups like the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) recommend not feeding dogs fatty foods, such as gravy. Poultry bones, including turkey, can splinter and tear a dog’s
Because dogs are so much smaller than humans (even large breeds), alcohol ingestion affects them faster and more negatively. Alcohol poisoning can manifest itself in a dog within 30 minutes and depending on the amount consumed, can lead to cardiac arrest and death.
Beware All That Glitters and Glows A Christmas tree with presents underneath certainly makes any island home look more festive during the holidays. From a dog’s point of view a Christmas tree is one great big new toy with lots of things to play with. Securely anchor your tree. This may mean more than just a sturdy tree stand—you can tie your tree to a heavy piece of furniture so your canine crew won’t knock it over.
Temptations...

Holidays should be a fun time filled with family and friends. Take a few extra precautions to keep your dog safe this holiday season.
intestinal lining. When throwing away scraps, secure the lid to your garbage container so that inquisitive pups can’t get to something they shouldn’t. While a spoonful of pumpkin pie might not kill a 110-pound Rottweiler, it will cause a small dog severe intestinal distress. Leave the desserts for the humans. Don’t assume that just because you have a large breed dog he can “tough it out” and handle anything you feed him. Chocolate is especially toxic to dogs as it contains methylxanthines, which can cause muscle tremors, vomiting, increased heart rate, seizures, and even death. Xylitol, an artificial sweetener, is even more toxic and can be found in candy and gum. Also, some peanut butter manufacturers have recently been adding Xylitol to their products— read ingredient labels carefully, and keep the sweet stuff away from your pooch. Other foods toxic to dogs include macadamia nuts, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, alcoholic beverages, and raw salmon.

It’s a good idea to keep candy canes, gingerbread men, and other food ornaments out of reach. The same goes for edible garlands, such as those made out of popcorn and cranberries. And if you have sentimental glass or ceramic ornaments, place them on the upper third of your tree branches– away from inquisitive snouts and paws. But what if your dog does chew on or swallow a glass ornament? Some vets recommend soaking cut up cotton balls (not synthetic beauty pads) or chunks of bread in milk or cream and feeding them to the dog. The idea is that this will absorb the glass shards and prevent them from tearing the intestinal tract. If you put preservatives in your Christmas tree water, prevent your dogs from getting to it and drinking the harmful water. Try placing the tree skirt around the stand to prevent it from looking like an appealing water dish. You can also spray pet deterrent around the base of the tree or even place an indoor exercise pen around it to prevent them from getting at the tree altogether. Electrical cords are not dog toys, although

your pet may think so. Use pet-proof extension cords so your dog won’t burn his mouth, or worse yet, get shocked or electrocuted.
Keep Medications Out of Reach Folks may be so focused on the well-known holiday food no-nos that they forget that everyday dangers are still lurking. Keep your and your house guests’ over-thecounter and prescription medications out of the reach of pets. Phone calls about pets accidentally ingesting human medications are the number one call to the ASPCA national poison hotline. Of the 199,000 calls they received in 2017, 35,000 were about pets accidently eating prescription or over the counter medicines. No matter what your
dog may ingest or chew on, it’s critical that you consult a veterinarian as soon as possible. Even if the mishap happens after hours or on a holiday, there are several vets on Oahu open 24 hours a day. As with humans, delaying medical care may make the situation worse, not better.
New Year’s Eve Anxiety Finally, you can’t talk about holiday pet safety without mentioning fireworks. In Hawaii, New Year’s Eve fireworks can rival those on the Fourth of July. Aerials, sparklers, and fountains are illegal to buy on Oahu but you

The Hawaiian Humane Society (HHS) sees an increase in the number of lost dogs during the holidays and strongly urges dog owners to license and microchip their pets, as well as have an ID tag. HHS maintains the only microchip database for Oahu. If you move or change phone numbers on Oahu, update your information with HHS by calling 946-2187 or online at hawaiianhumane.org. If you move to the mainland update your information on one of the national microchip registries such as the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) Universal Pet Microchip Lookup, petmicrochiplookup. org, and the Avid Identification Systems registry, AVIDD.com. Maintaining current contact information will increase the odds you will be reunited with your lost pet.
There are many ways to calm and comfort your pet during noisy holiday celebrations—Thundershirts, anxiety medication, crating, favorite treats and even CBD oil.
wouldn’t know that from all the fireworks being set off in communities across the island. It’s a problem for dog owners not only on Oahu, but also across the state who have to spend hours calming and caring for their pooches terrified by the loud booms Dogs that get spooked by the fireworks often run away, some never to be found. In addition to being frightened by fireworks, house guests may unknowingly leave gates and/or doors open, not realizing your canine friend is an escape artist. Thundershirts, anxiety meds, crating, and favorite treats are just some of the ways dog owners help their pets deal with fireworks. Many have turned to CBD oil as well.

Cannabidiol, or CBD, is a compound derived from the cannabis plant known as hemp, which has less than 0.3 percent THC (tetrahydrocannabidinol), the psychoactive component of marijuana. While CBD is all the rage right now, it’s worth remembering that there are currently no FDA approved CBD products for pets. As with any pet medication, check with your vet first to make sure it won’t interact with any medications your dog might be taking. With a little bit of planning and forethought, you and your dog can have a stress-free—and vet-free—holiday season! Denise Laitinen is an awardwinning writer of 25 years. eautiful August weather and great waves greeted this year’s pack (or herd, or flock, depending on your species) of contestants in the Duke’s Oceanfest’s 5th Annual Going to the Dogs SurFur Competition at Kuhio Beach. Hawaii’s only animal aquatic tournament featured 16 dogs and a duck from here and the mainland vying for glory, giving the huge and hugely appreciative crowd plenty to cheer and laugh for. Competitors ranged from the diminutive (Chihuahua, Yorkie, Frenchie) to the massive (68 lb English Bulldog, 70 lb Lab, 100 lb Mastiff) to the eldest (13 year old Jack Russell Terrier). The final decision was tough
for the judges, including Justin Cruz from KHON2, but a choice had to be made. And the winners are: Tandem–Roxi (Yorkie) and Sophia Culhane; Solo– Super Corgi Jojo. Yay!
