I got to live in a hotel room with Brock for the first two weeks of his time with me. And he’s like, okay, is this my new life? But then we came home, and I started training him, because Hawaii Five-O was still filming at the time, and they always needed K9 units, like the police dogs. I wanted to get a shepherd-type dog for that kind of stuff because they always use them. —Sue Chipperton

y dog Brock is named after big wave surfer Brock Little, just like Eddie [of Hawai‘i Five-0 ] was named after Eddie Aikau. He’s a German Shepherd and Belgian Malinois mix, born in June of 2018. I’d arranged for him to go to stay with mainland friends while waiting out quarantine. When I got him, it was just after the holidays. And it was pretty funny because I was just flying back from a visit home to England. Upon landing in Hawaii, I got a voice message from a producer saying he was working on Kauai on a movie called Hobbs and Shaw, which is one of the Fast and Furious movies. They needed some background dogs for their scenes, and could I supply them? Brock was flying in the next day, and now I was packing up a whole bunch of dogs to fly to Kauai! So I literally got him off the plane, said “Hi,” and put him on another plane to the outer islands. That’s how I met my new dog. We were on Kauai for a couple of weeks, myself and another trainer, and four other dogs. For background dogs, these are scenes where dogs are just milling around for atmosphere.

Potato is an adorable Manchester Terrier/ Shih Tzu/Chow mix with a pretty severe bite history that was rooted in fear-based aggression and separation anxiety. Potato’s case is one of APP’s biggest success stories, and it’s not because of anything related to the dog. This success was 100% a result of Taylor and Tyler’s (Potato’s “Hoomans”) dedication and commitment to the process and program we created for his behavior rehabilitation. The following testimonial is in their own words. Prior to APP, our 5-year-old dog Potato would bark, lunge, and had a bite history with people. He was also anxious, extremely reactive toward other dogs, and had bad separation anxiety. We worked with another trainer since we brought Potato home at 4 years old, but were feeling pretty frustrated with the lack of progress. As soon as we did our consultation with Sean, we knew he would be the right fit for us. He’s someone that has the same high standards for his dogs as we do and offers a science and research, no BS-based approach. Sean’s calm and positive demeanor really resonated with us. Sean taught us how to read Potato’s body language and that his reactivity is actually stemming from fear. It is a huge turning point for us to understand how Potato is feeling. Now he’s found that looking at other dogs and people can be a good thing and was even able to get close to Sean’s dogs! Sean has also helped us make huge strides with Potato’s separation anxiety. We’re so happy with A Pet Perspective and we are much better equipped to continue working with Potato, since the training never stops. ue decided she needed another dog to train as she continued to provide hound hunks for local productions. They are always in need of extras in the background, often in enforcement attire. Sue decided on a German Shepherd/Belgian Malinois mix because it opens more casting opportunities than a purebred. And boy, did she find the right guy! WINTER 2021 • ISLAND DOG MAGAZINE 43

Living on a North Shore ranch, Brock trains with the rest of the pack, including a 2- or 3-mile run alongside Sue’s ATV. Shepherds and Malinois are famous for their enthusiasm and high drive. “They want a job,” says Sue. “They want something to do. They’re not a pet that somebody just gets and hopes they’re going to go sleep on the porch. They need mental and physical stimulation for them not to be destructive or find their own excitement. So it’s very important, especially for him and the Dobermans, to get that training every single day. It works their brains to have them run through their paces, or learn some new things in anticipation of something coming up that they’ll have to do on set.” When Brock arrived in early 2019 at about 8 months, both Hawaii Five-0 and Magnum P.I. were still filming, and he got some early bits looking studly in police K9 regalia. As Sue explains, his big break came in Magnum P.I.’s Season 3, Episode 12, playing Atticus: “A woman has her service dog in her car, and she pulls into a gas station. When she goes inside to pay, somebody steals the car with the Atticus in it. Later in the scene, we find out he’s been shot, and Magnum and Higgins are trying to locate him. They find him in
a cabin, laying on the ground, bleeding, nearly dead, so they have to carry him out of the jungle. His next scene is at the vet’s office, where they wheeled him into the back for life-saving surgery. Brock had to do quite a few fun, little things in that one.” When rumors started swirling that NCIS would be doing a Hawaii spinoff, Sue reached out. Might they be interested in a canine companion for some lucky cast member? Why, yes. Yes indeed! Seems they wanted to pair a pup with Kai Holman, played by New Zealand actor Alex Tarrant. And the already-trained, ready-to-work, equally-handsome Brock was quickly named to be Kai’s pal Inoki. Kai’s story is that he left the Islands when he joined the Marines, but transferred back to help care for his aging dad. But when he gets his dog out of quarantine, he finds that his apartment on base won’t accept dogs. So good old Dad agrees to take care of Inoki until things get settled. That set up a long scene at Dad’s place, where a family bar-be-que is happening. “All studio dogs are trained to perform off-leash with an actor and make it look like they belong to him,” Sue relates. “I can go over to Alex and tap him and I’ll say, ‘go with,’ and have Alex give him a WINTER 2021 • ISLAND DOG MAGAZINE 45

He’s a very smart dog. He loves to work.” And we love to watch him!

He walks to the back room, and the whole time Brock is with him even, though the camera sometimes is up high and you can’t see him. And then they mess around in that back room talking. And then he turns around and leaves, and Brock goes with him.” Studio dogs are also trained to go to a mark, just like an actor hits his mark. Starting with something big, like a box, and steadily reducing its size, Sue now can tape a little one-inch by two-inch square to the floor and then rehearse him to go touch it with his foot. When the scene calls for it, Brock can walk in with Alex and when Alex goes one way, he has to go the other way and stand on his mark. No problem! Our boy is also trained to take direction without Sue being in his (or the camera’s) line of sight. She can direct him from behind, or tell him to look at the actor, and even use a hand signal to have him

wo out of three owners said “Yes!” in a recent survey by YouGov. In our case, little Tina joined us during a cold spell a few years ago, and she just stays at the foot of the bed. But big Arthur insists on being between us, sleeping sideways. Plus, he’s a sheet hoarder. So we only let him up when the sun rises. He can’t tell time, but he knows when his time is! As a general rule, dogs love to be near us. But that proximity may cause problems. You may have allergies. Your dog may snore. She may have Restless Paw Syndrome. He may want to be under the covers and cuddled up to your backside, which is fine in winter when the temperature drops into the 60s (the S-word!) or even 50s (the F-word!), but makes summertime 70s feel like 90s. Or it may be no problem for you, but it bugs your partner. Fine. Down, Fido! But if the human occupants are okay with it, there do seem to be some benefits to sharing the sack. You already know the physical and mental benefits of dog ownership, or you 62 ISLAND DOG MAGAZINE • WINTER 2021
wouldn’t be reading this magazine. Sharing bedtime will likely only increase those feelings of comfort and companionship. The flip side of your dog sleeping lighter and waking more often, especially upon hearing a strange noise, is that you can sleep deeper knowing that the Pup Alarm has been set. A child who has nightmares or trouble falling asleep can often be comforted by a dog’s presence. More good news: emerging research indicates that dogs can be trained to assist their owners with sleep issues such as sleep apnea (the dog alerts you when the CPAP mask is removed), sleepwalking (your dog redirects you to return to bed), narcolepsy (your dog warns you of sleep attack and protects you from injury in a fall) and PTSD nightmares (your dog wakes you and offers comfort). So if you want to try it, start slow with a night or two on, and then a night or two off, then reevaluate. If you do too many in a row, you’ve already trained him. Sweets dreams!
