Breeze through the Holidays with Island Dog!

Are you ready for the holidays? We sure are! We’ve been busy little elves building, packaging and wrapping up this festival of canine delights known as our Happy Howlidaze edition. It comes out at Thanksgiving and stays on the free racks through Christmas and New Year’s, all the way to Valentine’s Day, yay! That is, if they last that long…we print and distribute 17,500 copies on Oahu, and almost all are gone by the end of its 90-day lifespan. Thanks to you!

Our Cover Girl, Oreo, is a fine bundle of furry fun, shot by the equally fine and fun but decidedly not furry Ashley Smith. Our Da Kine Canine Gallery is brimming with delightful dogs and All Dressed Up shows a loving look at your personalized pupper. You know who you are—and now so do we! Next up is Puppies! Puppies! Puppies! So send pics of when they were young!

We share the tragic, but ultimately triumphant, tale of a rescue named Phoenix (Hint: the story contains fire safety tips!). Bertha Villanueva dispenses guidance on your very own Pet First Aid Kit. Once you get it, you can take her course in how to use it.

Our Howlidaze Gifts & Sniffs are just what you need to find the gear, garb, grub, tackle, hardware (but no software), apparatus and appurtenances to make the it a jubilee. Yippee!

All this, plus resident artist John Pritchett chronicling the noble domestic hunting dog, makes for the kind of extravagant festivities that we hope will propel your howlidaze into a Fiestadaze! As always, we are ever so grateful for the kindness of your attention to our little dog rag in this most digital of ages, and for barking recognition to our advertisers when you call or visit. It makes them so happy. And us, too!

Happy Holidays!

John and Carol

Let me introduce you to Oreo who is a purebred Pomeranian. We got her in 2014 at just three months old and gave her that name because of her coloring.

She puts up with other people and other dogs, but loves being with her family most of all. Oreo is loyal, protective and, for the most part, obedient. She enjoys being indoors rather than outdoors as long as she is getting attention from mom and dad.

Everyone asks if she is a puppy, even at eight years old, probably because of her spunky demeanor, big round eyes, and trim six-and-a-half pound figure. Oreo also loves to eat and will do every trick she knows for a snack, especially her favorite: Rice. She’s a true local girl!

Happy

Happy Howl-i-days

The holidays are some of the happiest times of the year. With celebrations and family coming to town, there’s a lot to look forward to! But sometimes it’s not as much fun for our pups. Holidays can be very stressful: people in strange costumes, wearing masks, friends and family coming into their home for the first time, and all kinds of sounds, smells, and experiences unique to the season. It is our responsibility that our dogs feel safe and confident during these special times.

CASE STUDY

PATIENT: “Henry” — 11 month old German Shepherd

SYMPTOMS: “Henry’s” owners reached out to us about his aggressive behaviors to new people coming into their home, or when out in public and anyone wearing a mask or hat approached them, he would bark, lunge, and snap! With a bite history of 3x incidents, it was time to get Henry some help.

DIAGNOSIS: After a detailed investigation into Henry’s background, we uncovered where his aggression originated. At six months old and going into the holiday season, Henry’s family had big plans for Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. He was in for many new experiences! Starting with the Halloween Party. Henry was bombarded with new people in the home, all of whom were in costume. Without any escape or safe place, Henry resorted to defending himself from all the “monsters” in his home. This led to his first bite, resulting in the person leaving the party: thus, the bite “worked.” When Thanksgiving came and family started arriving, he quickly started lunging and showing aggression toward guests again. This resulted in him getting locked into a separate room. Once Christmas rolled around, his aggression escalated to anyone entering the home or wearing a hat, including people he was familiar with.

SOLUTION: By unpacking and understanding the history of Henry’s aggression, we determined that the behaviors were actually manifesting out of fear and insecurity,

starting with the Halloween party. Henry realized that in the face of perceived danger, he had no escape and his best defense was a good offense. Understanding it was fear-based, we began with building his confidence by giving him a dedicated space (a crate) where he could go to reliably feel safe and nothing would bother him.

We helped him build coping-mechanisms, teaching Henry to go to his crate and hang out any time people came over so he could escape to his safe place and not have to confront the threat. We then taught him that people in hats were not actually threats by systematically desensitizing and counter-conditioning him to them. The family wore hats in the home and rewarded him anytime he disengaged with the person in the hat.

After 6 weeks of intensive work with Henry and his owners, they were able to successfully have guests over while Henry was able to relax in his crate. They were also able to reduce his fear of people in hats to the point where it was no longer a concern.

If you are struggling with a dog that has aggressive or other behavioral issues, reach out to us via email (Sean@apetperspective.com) or phone (808) 202-0897 and we'd be happy to create a Behaviors Plan based on your dog's specific needs and history.

Phoenix Rises

Fifteen month old Roscoe was already a dog with a bad reputation at the Hawaiian Humane Society. Having been returned twice, he was wondering if he would ever find his forever home. But fate arrived in February of 2019 in the form of Ashlyn Young, who scooped him up for her fiance, Fernando.

“You got me a dog for my birthday?” he asked. “I got you a hiking partner!” was her reply.

Upon hearing Roscoe’s travails, Fernando quickly renamed him. And so, Phoenix was christened, celebrating his rise from the ashes of others’ impressions. The foreshadowing is now transparent, as you can see by the photos.

Come June, Phoenix and fellow family pup Hoku were sleeping in their living room crates, as usual. But at 5:15 am, they started barking: loud, petulant and completely resistant to pleas for quiet yelled out by their humans.

So Fernando dragged himself out of bed and went down the hall to administer a firm “Shut up!” But turning the corner, all he could think was, “Oh, Sh!t!”

The house was on fire. Ablaze. And aiming for inferno.

He rousted Ashlyn, and together they got both dogs into one crate and dragged it outside. Nothing else could be rescued. Ashlyn’s call to 911 was logged at 5:34, and by 5:39 it was fully in flames.

The insurance fire inspector determined that the fire was started on the front porch by a faulty bug zapper and it raced toward the house. And the Honolulu Fire Department inspector also said that if the dogs had not awakened them, the fire would have cut off their escape route before it set off the smoke detector located in the kitchen. Or, they might have just slept through it until they succumbed to the smoke. Way to go, Phoenix and Hoku!

The Kailua house was Ashlyn’s childhood home,

built in the 1950s using materials like canec that develop hazardous arsenic fumes when burned, and especially when coated with paint containing asbestos. So even though the fire department was able to save some of the structure, everything was pretty much ruined. But that’s only the material part of life. As long as the people and pets survive, anything else can be replaced.

The final word from Ashlyn? “So, the

The Eddy Foundation teaches fire safety awareness for pet owners, and is dedicated to Britt Reller and his beloved rescue dog Eddy, who perished in the 2017 Marco Polo fire. Here are their Family Fire Safety Plans - A strategy for the safe evacuation of pets.

Fire Drills When you conduct a family fire drill, include your pets so it becomes routine for you and your household to look for and evacuate pets in the event of a fire.

Prior Arrangements In case you cannot return to your home right away, make prior arrangements with a friend or family member to shelter your pets on a temporary basis. Make sure your pets are familiar with that person.

dogs got Egg McMuffins that morning. They deserved it!”

Takeaways from Ashlyn and Fernando’s experience:

• Get TWO smoke detectors and place them in the kitchen and an opposite location for the earliest warning.

• Keep your homeowner’s insurance up to date.

• And of course, “Get a Dog!”

Spare Leashes Keep a spare leash near your exit doors so you can easily take your pet or pets with you in the event you need to evacuate your home.

ID Tags and Microchips

Your pet should always wear a collar with current ID tags. It is also essential to microchip your pets and keep your contact information current.

Window/Door Pet Stickers

Attach a sticker or a note to windows and doors to give notice that pets are present and may need evacuation if it can be done without jeopardizing first responders. Keep the number and types of pets that live in your home updated on your exit/entry sticker.

Talk To Me

How Stella Learned to Talk: The Groundbreaking Story of the World's First Talking Dog by Christina Hunger. Speech-language pathologist Christina Hunger, has taught her dog, Stella, to “talk” using simple paw-sized buttons associated with different words. She started with a button programmed with her voice to say the word “outside” when clicked, whenever she took Stella out of the house. A few years later, Stella now has a bank of more than thirty word buttons, and uses them daily either individually or together to create near-complete sentences. Amazon.com.

Pet First Aid Kits 101

All the Basics You Need to Know

If your pet gets injured at home, do you have the necessary supplies to help? Do you have a first aid kit for your dog?

Our pets can suffer an injury (minor or major) at any moment. Most of the time, it happens at home past the regular business hours of our routine vet or when we are nowhere near an emergency pet hospital.

Your first line of defense in any petrelated medical emergency is having the tools and supplies needed to promptly render aid to an injured pet, especially time-sensitive life-saving help.

As a dog mom, pet business owner, and Certified Pet First Aid and CPR instructor, I know how important it is to have a pet first aid kit with me no matter where I go.

Why You Should Have a Pet First Aid Kit

Whether it’s a minor scrape from brushing up against a rose bush or breaking a

leg from a fall down the stairs, having the supplies and tools to manage these injuries is critical. And, when you take action to help your pet, it’s less stressful on your pet because they are much more comfortable getting help from their pet parent.

When heading out the door to take your dog to their favorite park or taking a road trip, it’s a great idea to have a pet first aid kit along for the ride.

This gives you the peace of mind that you will be prepared and ready for any injuries or emergencies, no matter where you go.

In addition, you’ll have the supplies and tools to render aid to any dog or cat you may come across when you are on the road.

DIY Pet First Aid Kit

There’s no better way to know you have what you need during a pet medical emergency than putting together a first

aid kit yourself.

Here are the items that I feel are the most crucial supplies to have in a pet first aid kit:

• Contact info for your current veterinary clinic and nearest 24-hour emergency veterinary hospital.

• Cold pack

• Alcohol wipes

• 3% Hydrogen Peroxide to induce vomiting

• Benedryl for insect sting/bite reaction

• Digital thermometer to measure temperature

• Soft muzzle

• Gauze pads

• Gauze roll

• Vet wrap (self-adhesive, shown in blue in photo at left)

• Medical tape

• Cotton balls & Cotton swabs

• Pet-safe antibiotic ointment

• Wound spray

• Sterile saline solution

• Hand sanitizer

• Disposable gloves

• Tongue depressors x 2 for splints

• Medical scissors

• Flat slanted tweezers

• Disposable syringe (needleless) x2 to administer Hydrogen Peroxide or medication

• Mini flashlight

• Pen and notepad

• Ziploc bags

• Soft leash (4 or 6 feet)

• Washcloth

• Large bath or beach towel

• Bubble wrap for splint comfort

• And finally, a sturdy plastic bin to hold all your supplies.

Ready-to-Go Pet First Aid Kits

Pet first aid kits are readily available and can be purchased at Petco, Petsmart, local pet retail stores, and Amazon.

A few that I can recommend: The Kurgo Portable Dog First Aid Kit is considered a top-rated pet first aid kit and I have this in my car.

It has 50 pieces of supplies, three compartments to store the supplies, and comes in an easily foldable bag.

The American Pet Emergency Mini Travel Kit is a small pet first aid kit with the bare minimum to treat minor wounds for pets.

It’s just 19 pieces and I carry this in my purse for any minor mishaps my pup may sustain if we’re out running errands.

Try to find a kit with the majority of the supplies you are looking for, and then add an item or two, like a thermometer.

Can I Use First Aid Kit Supplies for My Dog?

Some supplies you find in a human first aid kit can be used to help an injured pet, but during an emergency, you’re not going to have time to check which supplies are pet-friendly and safe for use.

Check Your Kit’s Supplies

Hydrogen Peroxide and antibiotic ointments can expire so check the expiration dates and switch out the oldies. And replace used, damaged, or contaminated items like gauze pads, gauze rolls, or alcohol wipes. Let’s get ready to render!

2022 Raising Cane’s Going to the Dogs Surfur Competition

Duke’s Oceanfest Waikiki August 23, 2022

This year’s Raising Cane’s Going To The Dogs Surfur Competition at Duke’s OceanFest was filled with waves, smiles and wagging tails galore. The only Pet Surfing competition in Hawai‘i featured four Solo Surfur competitors and 19 Tandem Surfur teams, competing in the waves at Waikiki for great prizes. Three Solo Surfurs from California and a Bulldog from the Big Island competed against each other in the Solo Surfur Invitational Division, with Derby California (a Doodle with a mohawk from San Diego) taking First Prize.

Tandem Teams included the youngest Surfur, Hapa Dyson, with his chihuahua Pua, and the “oldest Surf Dog in the World,” Luna the Jack Russell (she’s 17 and surfed a few waves in front of her many fans). The First Place Winner of the Tandem Division was Rufus, a six year old Chocolate Lab from the

North Shore, and his human Ikaika; we think it was Ikaika’s handstand and showmanship, as well as Rufus’ good-boy style that put them over the top for points!

VCA FAMILY & OAHU VETERINARY SPECIALTY CENTER

Meet the Newest Addition to our Specialty Team: Oncologist, Dr. Lucy Teddy

A diagnosis of cancer is scary and emotional, and my goal is to advocate for patient quality of life while guiding families through the treatment options. I like to personalize each plan to the pet and the family—what’s feasible financially, what time commitment is possible, pet’s temperament, etc. I am excited to continue to grow as a clinician as I meet new pets and their parents and provide cancer treatment to the dogs and cats of Hawaii. With a focus on quality of life, I hope to provide supportive treatments for my patients as well as cancer targeted treatments. A diagnosis of cancer may mean less time with a loved pet than expected, but, when possible, I want to extend quality of life for my patients so they can have as many good days as possible. — Dr. Lucy Teddy

Lucy Teddy, DVM Oncologist

Born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, she received a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science from Oregon State University, and graduated from the University of Illinois in Veterinary Medicine. She did her rotating internship at VCA Aurora (Illinois), oncology internship at Michigan State University, and her clinical trials internship at Cornell University, where she also did her residency. Her special interests include: leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, histiocytic sarcoma, feline cancers, and palliative care.

For referrals or questions about scheduling, please contact Dr. Teddy’s assistant, Shari Shinno at Sharilynn.Shinno@vca.com or call 808-745-1914. Shari is available Monday, Thursday, and Friday from 7am to 5pm, and Tuesday and Wednesday 8am to 3pm.
