y friend and I found Annie 13 years ago while walking on the beach at Makaha. She was eating McDonald’s wrappers and she was just skin and bones. We took her to the vet, who thought she was just too far gone. But I stayed with her for the next few nights, and realized she had a fight in her—a spark to live! And she’s proved that through other challenges that left her blind in one eye and deaf, and then a herniated disc in her neck that required four hours of emergency surgery at VERC. Saved again! Three years ago I started to feature her with me in my commercials and a star was born. I’ll be at the airport in LA, and people will see me and yell, “Hey Kia Guy! Where’s Annie?” They don’t know my name, but they sure know hers.

They’ll say, “We’re here because you love Annie, and you love dogs and you’re helping the OSPCA.” Annie is 14 now and doesn’t work as much as she used to. hen we first started publishing Island Dog in 2008, clinics had their regular hours and if you had an emergency at night, you were probably going to wait until morning or roust your vet out of bed. If your dog needed specialized care of any kind, your vet just did the best he could or you had to travel with your pet to the mainland for treatment.

of veterinary medicine and are recognized for their achievement. They also work with an amazing array of tools, instruments and devices to determine what is wrong and the best course of treatment. The goal is to bring the same level of care to animals that is available to humans. And it works pretty much the same way. Your regular vet is like your family doctor. He knows a lot about keeping you healthy with regular checkups, routine labs, shots and healing the occasional mishap. But sometimes he finds something he doesn’t like and wants a second opinion or he’s not
comfortable with a procedure that’s a little too close to an organ or the spine. So he refers you to a specialist for consultation and possibly treatment. When you are referred to VERC or VCA, your family vet is kept in the loop about your pet’s status, treatment, prognosis and outcome. When you return to him, he is able to incorporate this knowledge into his continuing service as the primary care physician. Some of the available services include: Endoscopy A lighted flexible tube is inserted into the body through an existing opening (mouth or anus) for closer examination. Allows an instrument (scissors, forceps) to be used for removing foreign bodies. Much easier than cutting open. Radiology X-rays, Ultrasound, Computed Tomography (CAT scans) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) are all used to diagnose and direct treatment for disease and injuries. Oncology Diagnosis and treatment of cancer includes surgery, radiation therapy, immunotherapy and chemotherapy. Surgery Repairs to the orthopedic system (bones, joints, ligaments), soft tissue (cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, respiratory tract, etc.) and neurosurgery. As with humans, all these advances in treatment come at a cost. Often a high one. Be sure to get an estimate for each stage of care, and be aware that there are often unforeseen complications that can raise the final price. What is the maximum amount you are willing to pay versus the expected quality and length of life? It’s best to decide before your pet gets sick and to consider getting pet insurance. No judgment: It’s hard to put a price on love.

Legacy Trees

TO Honor & Remember Many people are surprised at the intensity of grief and feelings of loss when a pet passes on. Our pets are a part of us, our beloved companions, and members of our families, so deep grief is understandable. It is important to grieve and we all grieve in different ways. Rituals and memorials help with the healing process by celebrating our pet’s lives and honoring and respecting the relationship we shared together.
W
hen Leialoha’s beloved Hokulani passed, she planted a legacy tree on the Big Island in honor of Hokulani’s memory. The tree was planted on land that was once King Kamehameha’s koa forest but had been cleared for ranching and lumber. It was a gift of life to the forest that will bring back the native birds and help with the watershed. What a befitting memorial for Hokulani, her faithful best friend. Leialoha arranged her memorial legacy Aloha no Hokulani tree planting through Hawaiian Legacy Reforestation Initiative and Hawaiian Legacy Tours when she would be visiting the island of Hawaii. The tour started at ‘Umikoa Village in Pau’uilo on the Hamakua Coast, about a 1 hour drive from Hilo. She selected Hokulani’s tree in the nursery. She and a group of friends headed to the uplands, passing through pungent eucalyptus groves, rolling pasture lands, groves of young koa trees and taking in the spectacular vista.

The planting site was on a grassy slope below a stand of old-growth koa trees laden with lichen. Leialoha’s memorial legacy tree was computer chipped so if she wants to return to visit her tree, she will be able to find it. She can even follow the growth of her memorial tree online. As the early afternoon mist started rolling in, Leialoha turned to glance at her tree and smiled. Aloha no Hokulani.
