Not that there's nothing to enjoy in the waning weeks of the worst year in memory, mind you. Tyler Landon’s new biz, SUPDog Hawaii, which is dedicated to letting you and your pup live that ocean loving life. Laura Lane checks in with her medical alert dog, Gunner, who warns her when her blood sugar level is low. On a solemn note, our beloved dog Aiko passed away just two weeks before her 15th birthday. It hurt terribly, but we are mindful that the depth of pain is more than matched by the height of the joy and love we shared. e fell in love with Ginger at the Kahala puppy “swap meet.” “Awapui Keo Keo” or Hawaiian White Ginger was the first born of five females and was the biggest, the alpha female, and though supposedly aloof, she took to me immediately. I had always been a big dog person, but it was love at first sight. She looked like a polar bear cub! She’s all Hawaii with grandparents from Haleiwa, Nanakuli, Waianae and Salt Lake, so we sometimes call her “local girl,” as many local Westies have New Zealand, Australia or Mainland lines. She adores her two sister cats, ASHLEY SMITH her two daddies—Steve and Marcelo—and Panda, her new baby sister recently adopted from Bali. Ginger is having a very energetic second puppyhood because of her. Everyone at Kailua beach knows and loves Ginger and calls her the Little Caesar’s kine dog. Besides Kailua beach, Gin loves walks in our home neighborhood of Maunawili, car rides, the beach below the Blowhole (Cockroach Bay) where she can climb the rocks, ahi jerky, and chasing any little thing that runs (it’s in her DNA). But not, alas, surfing. She’s also sometimes a spoiled diva, and we hope this feature in Island Dog doesn’t inflate her already sufficiently grand “Westitude.” — Stephen Tannenbaum

erendipity first struck when J. Tyler Landon joined a friend in Hawaii for a Capoeira graduation and surf trip in December 2017. He fell in love with the islands. He returned to San Diego and spent a year prepping to move his rescue pup Phoenix and himself to Hawaii for their next chapter in life.

Tyler settled on Oahu and started to work with Phoenix to get her used to the beach. “Once we got to the warm waters of Oahu, she soon became a water pup. I was working at Blue Planet Surf Shop, and started taking her out with a SUP (stand up paddle board). I would throw the ball and play ocean fetch to keep her entertained, exercised and excited to stay in the water near the board. Then I slowly added in wave riding.” Serendipity struck again in June 2019, when Tyler met with the organizers of the Going to the Dogs Surfur Competition— part of the annual Duke’s Oceanfest. They convinced Tyler to enter Phoenix into the 2019 event, and the duo became instant celebrities when they made it into the
Honolulu Star Advertiser. The camaraderie and fun in the water with the other “SurFurs” convinced Tyler that he could help other dog owners experience an exciting water lifestyle safely and correctly with their dogs. SUPDog Hawaii was born! “Melissa was the winner of the SUP giveaway at the Duke’s Oceanfest fundraiser, and she hired me to help teach her 95 lb. Bull Mastiff, Achilles, to join their family in the water and on the SUP. She also brought her boxer puppy to the lesson. I used an 11 ft. rental SUP board, and let’s just say I learned a lot about what not to do in a lesson. The whole family had fun, Achilles had a great swim session, and we kept everything WINTER 2020 • ISLAND DOG MAGAZINE 37

Tyler’s Top 3 Tips for including your dog in a water lifestyle #1: Repetition. Establish continuous contact with the water, and activities with the beach. Start small, and build up. Keep it positive! They’re truly living the SUPDog Hawaii life!” One year later, with the success of his public SUP/dog clinics and participation with the virtual Hawaii Pet Expo in 2020, Tyler has grown his business to include Doga (yoga with Dogs), swim classes, and specialty doggy treats.

As a Medical Alert dog, Gunner alerts Laura, his diabetic owner, when she’s in a low blood sugar episode. 40 ISLAND DOG MAGAZINE • WINTER 2020
A dog’s sense of smell is legendary. Like, 10,000 to a 100,000 times better than we scentchallenged humans legendary. It’s no wonder that we are constantly finding new ways to make use of their abilities. Our relationship has graduated from hunting food to sniffing out weapons and fireworks, cancer, and now even coronavirus. So detecting low blood sugar is really not a superpower—it just takes the right training and a dog who’s up to snuff.
W
e met Laura Lane at a dog event (remember those?) in February at Salt Kakaako. She was accompanied by Gunner, her four year old Medical Alert dog. Laura has been diabetic since the age of 12—over three decades. In 2016 she decided that she wanted a service dog to alert her to life threatening low blood sugar episodes. She kindly agreed to answer a few questions and share her experiences with Gunner. John: First, what is diabetes, and how does it affect you personally? Laura: Diabetes is an illness that occurs when your pancreas stops producing insulin. Your blood sugar can go high or low, depending on what and when you’re eating. So I have to give myself an insulin shot every time I eat and constantly monitor my levels. John: How did you choose Gunner? Laura: I’ve always loved German Shepherds. So when I decided to get a service dog, I wanted the straight backed, big boned Shepherd with a great temperament. After research, I found Shelly at Salhaus German Shepherds in Oregon, and her dogs were just beautiful! I was on a two year wait list before I got Gunner. WINTER 2020 • ISLAND DOG MAGAZINE 41

John: How was he trained? Laura: Salhaus started training him as a puppy. I did a lot of research and reading beforehand, and when I brought Gunner over, I continued the training. Basically you train the dog to recognize your low blood sugar scent. When I knew my blood sugar was low, I took a swab from my mouth and hid it under a cup. Then I added a bunch of empty cups and hid them around the house, so it’s hide-and-seek. And as soon as Gunner detected that low blood sugar, he got lots of love and praise and treats, so he learned real quick. He’s a smart boy! I taught him to touch, and to nudge me when I’m low. He’s saved my life many times at night when I’ve just been in a really deep sleep. He’ll nudge me, lick me, whine and paw at me and I’ll be like “Go away!” But he’ll keep at it, and even though I don’t feel low, I know he’s looking out for me so I get up and check my level. I’ll be at 30-50, whereas normal is 80. So I’ll have a snack to raise it back up.

John: Does he get along with other dogs? Laura: Sometimes people are hesitant because he’s so big, but then they see and feel his loving nature. One lady had a puppy that saw him and was wagging his tail, but she grabbed him up. I said, “He’s really friendly, honest!” and then Gunner laid down, and let the puppy come up and sniff him and lick him. It was so cute! It’s the same with kids. His size can be so intimidating, but once they find out he’s a sweetheart, they all want to play.
John: What’s life with Gunner like? Laura: Well, I just can’t say enough about him. From when he got his last puppy shot, I started taking him everywhere with me because I wanted him to be really socialized. He gets along with other dogs and kids and even cats. Plus he passed the American Temperament Test, where your dog is challenged by different terrains, strangers, an umbrella opened in their face, and even a gun going off. CASE STUDY Name: Teddy, Basenji/Whippet mix Symptoms: On walks, growling and snapping at kids and other dogs. Major dog-dog aggression. Diagnosis: Teddy was a rescue who had been separated from his mom way too early. He was raised with other hunting dogs and was attacked by one, leaving him partially paralyzed by a lower back trauma. He became extremely, aggressively defensive as a result. Although rehomed after a recovery period, he was always anxious, terrible on a leash in public, and couldn’t get exercise on his own, still hampered by his injury.

Best. Dog. Ever. That doesn’t mean we haven’t loved all of our dogs, of course. Aiko was just different in amazing, amusing, and wonderful ways: Dignified, but not aloof; Open to some direction, but not a training regimen; Quiet, but not above challenging strangers who dared ring the doorbell. She was sublime and inspired us to start Island Dog Magazine in 2008. She appears in our magazine as the black running dog with a yellow lei. We got her from a neighbor, putting $20 down before she even opened her eyes. Dad was a tan Shar Pei with a face like a gargoyle belying a really sweet disposition. Mom was a black “Lab” who was nice, but not quite convincing in the role. So we got a DNA blood test, and she was a Shar Pei/Collie/Golden Retriever/Chow. A poi dog. Best $200 we ever spent! Aiko taught Tina, our rescue Chihuahua/Fox Terrier with the highest food drive ever seen, not to beg at the table. Treats would come during cleanup. And she house-trained Arthur, our Lab/ Golden from his first days of puppyhood, demonstrating the proper use of the doggie door and the proud sense of accomplishment of a job well done. With her passing, our Tri-pack became a Two-pack. Arthur and Tina have dealt with the loss much better than we, maybe sensing the cancer that we couldn’t see would, inevitably, take her. But her last days were filled with joy—short walks, lounging on her favorite pillow, and yes, even table scraps. Thank you, Aiko. You made us better and we made great memories together.
