WELCOME ABOARD ISLAND HARBOUR MARINA Welcome to Island Harbour Marina, the Isle of Wight’s ‘Garden marina’. A tranquil and beautiful spot, with plenty of grass areas and surrounded by green fields and a view of the lovely River Medina. If you have children or dogs, then this is the perfect marina for you, as you can soak up the scenery and enjoy the picturesque riverbank walks. I am very proud to be the manager of Island Harbour. I used to play here as a mere lad in the 1970s and never dreamed that I would one day be lucky enough to work at such a lovely place. I have enjoyed my time here immensely and look forward to many more happy years to come. Over the winter months we have been working hard to improve the marina facilities. For your comfort, we have a brand new shower and toilet block with double the number of showers. We have also been planting new flower beds and have put in hanging baskets to enhance the marina’s natural beauty. There is also a brand new cycle path along the lovely River Medina from Island Harbour to Newport. To compliment this, we can also now hire bicycles, starting at only £15 per day each. More details are available from the Control Tower. I am extremely lucky to have a great team around me. We all pride ourselves on the personal service that we can provide. So, if you ever need anything, feel free to come and see us, as we are always glad to help. With me in the office are Suzanne and Kaya and the lockkeepers this year are Nathan, Mel and Cath. Outside, we have Simon and Nick to help us with all of our maintenance requirements. The Breeze Restaurant and Bar is going from strength to strength, boasting a brand new menu this year. With Jane and her staff in the bar and Scott’s team in the kitchen, all of your needs will be very well catered for! As ever, Richardsons Yacht Services are here to help you with any mechanical or maintenance issues that you might have. Terry, Carla and their crew can provide a full range of boat repair services and also have an excellent selection of chandlery and provisions. You will find more details in their advertisement on the back page of this brochure. So, all-in-all, what more could you ask for in a marina? We are even lucky enough to have our very own Yacht Club, so if you can think of anything else, then please let us know! We have a customer feedback form in the rear pocket of this brochure and would be grateful if you can complete it. After the long, wet and windy winter months, I wish everyone a very happy season’s sailing. I am sure that we will all have a terrific year ahead of us. Darren Cooke, Marina Manager. 4

The medina estuary is such an important area for nature conservation that it is protected by six different designations under national and international law. From source to sea the River Medina is 17km long and rises as chalk springs from St Catherine's Down on the south of the island. As it flows north it collects water from an area over 70km2 .
The Medina Estuary has a wonderfully interesting character made up of a rich maritime heritage, wealth of natural habitats and vibrant mix of recreation, transport and industry.

Island Harbour Family Fun Day On 13th of September 2014, Island Harbour Marina held its second Annual Charity Fun Day. The main aim was to raise funds for three inspirational Island charities, whilst helping to build recognition for the Marina. Our chosen charities were Oar-some Memories, supporting Age UKIW, Ryde Sea Cadets and the Jack Frost Appeal. We were delighted to have over 50 local businesses set up their stalls, free of charge, and are delighted that they were so kind as to donate raffle prizes. Bars ‘N’ Events provided outdoor music and a running commentary on the events throughout the day. Kids (& adults) were kept entertained with a bouncy castle, kayak rides, treasure hunt and much more. Artizan Photography captured some amazing shots of the day. Thank you all for your support. The Breeze Restaurant & Bar was jam packed throughout the day, and with our additional catering spots, including Archie’s food truck, a hog roast & candy floss, there was something for all. The event started with a bang at 10:00am with an extremely popular ‘Marine boat Jumble’. Then there were brilliant performances from Raw Samba, Eastern Promise Belly Dancers, the Cadet Marching Band and the Shanti Men. One o’clock saw the launch of the Oar-some Memories ‘Round the Island’ Kayak Challenge, raising money for Age UKIW, finishing back in Newport on the following Saturday. We are all extremely pleased with how well you did. Superb job! The raffle draw saw many fantastic prizes being won, first prize being tickets to The Lion King in London. The treasure hunt and caption competition also kept a few minds busy. A fantastic day and a massive thank you to everyone who supported us. With everyone’s help we raised a superb £1,298.20 for three very worthy charities.

The aim of the Sea Cadets is to help young people towards responsible adulthood and to encourage them to reach their potential by developing valuable personal attributes and high standards of conduct, using a nautical theme, based on the customs and traditions of the Royal Navy. The Sea Cadet Corps helps youngsters, aged between 10 and 18 develop their self confidence and character into becoming, in the most general sense, the good citizens and neighbours of the future. Training activities we do, include: Sailing, kayaking, rowing, Military Marching Band, adventure training, canoeing, windsurfing, Duke of Edinburgh's Award and much, much more! Ryde Unit has a Royal Marine Cadet Detachment. Cadets train following in the footsteps of the Royal Marine Commandos and learn the combat skills of camouflage and concealment. If you think you might like to join us, then please telephone or email to arrange to come for a visit, and we will give you a tour of the unit, explain further what we offer young people, and answer any questions you might have. TO THE
P.S. R YDE The Paddle Steamer Ryde, now known as ‘The Ryde Queen’, has been a feature of the marina since arriving in 1970. Sadly, for many years she has been deteriorating into her current dilapidated condition. She was originally brought here to replace the smaller Medway Queen as a floating restaurant and nightclub, which arrived in 1966, around the time that the marina first opened. The P.S Ryde was commissioned for Southern Railways in 1936 and built by William Denny & Bros of Clydesdale as a sister ship to the P.S. Sandown. She sailed the Portsmouth to Ryde Pier passenger service route, currently operated by the Wightlink Catamrans.
R YDE Q UEEN
She was 223 feet long (68 m), 52ft in the beam (16m) and weighed in at 566 tonnes. She was licensed to carry 1050 passengers and was amongst the first ships to be built with triple expansion diagonal reciprocating steam engines. The Ryde boasted an observation lounge on her promenade deck and on the main deck she had a large saloon, a tea room, a ladies’ room, a smoking room, and a restaurant. A two class ship, 'saloon class' and 'third class', P.S. Ryde operated an all-yearround service prior to the outbreak of the Second World War. During this time, she served as both a minesweeper and an anti-aircraft vessel and heroically took part in the Normandy landings of June 1944. By coincidence, the Medway Queen also

saw great war service, assisting with the Dunkirk evacuations. Returning to passenger service in 1945, the Ryde became part of the British Rail fleet and continued in service until 1969, by which time she was the last paddle steamer working on the Solent. She then came here to Binfield Marina, as we used to be called, to start her career as the marina clubhouse and discotheque. At that time, she was re-named to the Ryde Queen by the reigning Miss United Kingdom. The Ryde remained as a nightclub until 1989, but eventually closed down due to her worsening condition. Sadly, she has continued to deteriorate ever since. (See the picture to the left). Although there have been some attempts to save her, the costs involved

and several changes of ownership meant that they have all faltered. The P.S. Ryde is one of the most iconic paddle steamers and is held in great affection around the Island and beyond. Many people, including me and perhaps some of you, may remember dancing the night away on her back in the day. She is also said to be the last surviving oceangoing, coal burning paddle steamer left in the world, with most having been converted to run on oil. For many years, it has generally been assumed that she will just be scrapped. However, although nothing has yet been decided, she hasn’t been completely written off yet! You can see a short film of her sailing the Thames in all her glory in 1968. Just check out the ’Picture Gallery’ page. ………………………………………………..
NAUTICAL TRIVIA ANSWERS 1.
A vessel under tow in fog should give one long sound blast followed by three short blasts. Repeat at two minute intervals.
2.
In historic sailing ships, women were occasionally smuggled aboard and many naturally became pregnant in due course. Childbirth at sea traditionally happened between cannons on the gun deck, and the child was recorded in the ship’s log as a son of a gun.
3.
“Mayday” is said to have originated from the French phrase “M’aidez” meaning “Help me”.
4.
Although salinity varies in different oceans and locations, on average sea water is about 3.5% dissolved salts.
5.
An “angel” is another term for an anchor kellet or sentinel. This is a weight that is suspended from the anchor rode, some distance down from the bow. It lowers the angle between the lower part of the rode and the sea bottom, thus increasing its holding power. It also provides slack to absorb the strain caused by gusts and waves, especially when there is not room to let out sufficient scope.
6.
Water going down a drain swirls counter clockwise in the northern hemisphere and clockwise in the southern hemisphere. So just put some water in the galley sink and watch after you pull the plug. This is called the Coriolis Effect, which also influences ocean and wind currents.
7.
Ancraophobia is fear of the wind.
8.
The term originally used for the left side of the boat was Larboard. Given its similarity in sound to “Starboard,” you can see how the term “Port” became preferable over time. “Starboard” delivered from Old English terms for steering board (on the right side of historic ships). Larboard possibly came from the words for loading and board - and ships were traditionally docked on their left side for loading. “Port” is thought to have the same meaning: the side put to the wharf when in port.
9.
Sailors in port in Yokohama liked to visit Hunki-Dori street when they felt carefree, in the centre of the city’s red light district where sailors would want to go after a long time at sea.
10.
Rum Punch can be made in various ways, but this ditty helps you recall the basics. One part of lime juice (sour); two parts of sugar syrup or a sweet juice like orange or pineapple (sweet); three parts rum (strong); and four parts water or any lighter juice (weak).
