I’m watching his small fingers tightly gripping a chewed-up marker. He is so careful as he slowly writes wobbly letters and I’m holding my breath, just trying to be still during this moment before I cover him in proud kisses.
As I watch my son write his name for the first time, I’m met with the realization that as he’s learning this new skill, I’m still learning how to be his parent.
At the beginning, this learning looked a lot simpler: recognizing sleepy cues, treating diaper rashes, preparing solid foods.
Then as this baby grew into a toddler, my learning became more introspective as I realized that I was fundamentally changing. I began to wonder: Who is this new person, this mother? What makes her joyful now? What makes her fearful?
I learned what intrusive thoughts were, and why they were happening to me. I learned that writing calmed me, and that exercise was required for my mental health.
Mostly, I’m still learning, and re-learning: what it means to live patiently, to stay calm, to ask for forgiveness and to accept gentle criticism; how to navigate the dichotomy between coping with being briefly apart and surviving when we’re always together; how to adapt to my kids’ evolving needs.
I’m trying to learn how to guard my choices, while also staying flexible and open-minded. Maybe I’ll finally learn to not only ask for what I want, but to put my foot down for what I need.
The constant learning required to grow into this role of “parent” has been a joyful and gritty odyssey for me. Beyond myself or my own identity, I wonder what becoming a parent has meant for others.
I’d like to ask each reader: When you hear the word “learn” in reference to yourself as a parent, what does that make you consider?
When you hold up a mirror, does it reveal aspects of your personality that weren’t obvious before you became a parent? Perhaps you’re
learning that you’re less flexible than you thought, or that you have a temper. Maybe you’re learning that your friendships are changing. Or perhaps you’re figuring out how to be vulnerable with your partner, or your parents, or yourself, in an entirely different way. Maybe you’re realizing you’re more controlling than you knew, or that your heart just can’t handle the thriller movies your pre-parent self used to love.
As I consider the plethora of what I’m still learning, I feel a frenzy of hopes and aches inside my chest. It’s a sort of need—a deep longing to have it all figured out, so that I can give my kids the parent they deserve. And when the overwhelm comes, I try to remember how I’m also learning to believe that there is still time. Even as that pile of toosmall clothes grows bigger every day, and even as I try to learn how to slow time down, I’m also trying to believe that there is time left for me to really find myself as this changed person.
Amidst the uncertainty, I also lean into what I know, which is that learning doesn’t exist without curiosity and caring. And I know that I will keep being curious about their lives, and about my own. I know that I will do my best to take care of them, and to take care of myself. I will continue to encourage and cherish their learning and keep striving for my own.
As he finishes that last letter and looks up at me so proudly, I release my held breath and bury my face in his little neck as his squeals of delight fry my eardrums. I realize he’ll never stop learning, and neither will I. And—we’ve got time.
Kathleen Brown (RN) is a creative at heart who seeks out meaningful conversation in an attempt to nurture her curious mind. Together with her husband, they take their pup and two small kids on as many beach adventures, bike track excursions and hikes as time will allow.

Stuck inside? Rainy, cold weather doesn’t have to result in complaining kids who say nothing but “I’m bored!” and “I’m hungry!” or stare at screens all day.
There are plenty of exciting activities that will keep your kiddos’ minds and bodies busy (and distracted from the fact that they can’t get outdoors). You won’t even need to run to the store for any of these as they all use things you probably have in your home.
Keep this list saved in your phone or on the fridge for some inspiration.
1. Pillowcase Race: Nothing like a good old-fashioned sack race to get the blood flowing! Bump up the education factor by getting them to race to papers with numbers, letters or colours written on them.
2. Scoop & Strut: Put a ball on a spoon, measuring cup or cup and walk, skip, or crawl to the other side of the room to place it in the correct colour-coded basket or bowl.
3. Action Alphabet: Write letters (or numbers or colours) on some papers, place them around the room and the possibilities are endless! Dance to the letter A, hop to green, twirl to the number 4.
4. Hands On: Work together to trace the parts of your child’s body on separate pieces of paper and then put them together like a giant human puzzle.
5. Tape Track: In your largest tile or concrete floored room, put down some painters’ tape as a maze or racetrack. Get them to use their brains by making parking stalls or corners of the maze with letters, numbers or colours in them and telling them to find their way to the number three or park the blue car in stall A.
6. Budget Bowling: If you have paper or plastic cups left over from your kid’s last birthday party, you have an instant and awesome game! Stack them on top of each other and knock them down with a ball for tons of fun.
7. Balloon Keep Up: Challenge your child to keep a balloon from falling to the floor without catching or holding it! Add in props (think badminton rackets) and some counting practice. How many times can they hit it up before it falls?
8. Musical Fun: Musical chairs, freeze dance, or ‘silly’ dancing are all great ways to keep your child moving and active. Try different tempos of music for varying experiences.
9. String Fling: This one takes a bit more time for set up but can really pay off. Tape some string to the walls throughout your house in a zig-zag pattern and have your kids follow it from room to room. For a bonus, put toys (that they already have, no need to buy new) at the end of each coloured string for them to find.
10. Obstacle Course: Set up chairs, ottomans, baskets or benches to climb over and crawl under. Let your child time themselves to see how fast they can go through the maze.
11. Tot Toss: Throw bean bags into bin with corresponding colours, numbers or letters. “Throw a pink bean bag into bin 2!”
12. Red Light, Green Light, Purple Light? Put a spin on a classic and add different colours to the game—purple light=spin, blue light=touch the sky, green light=jump like a frog, etc.
13. Tinfoil Boats: All hands on deck! Fold tinfoil into a boat and then float it anywhere there’s water. The tub, sink or a Rubbermaid container, any body of water can be your lake. Add items of different weights (such as coins, marbles, paper clips, etc) to see how many it takes to sink.
14. Get Your Groove On: Sometimes entertaining your kids is as easy as turning on some tunes. Play some music and get them to have a dance off or make up their own dances. Crank up the fun by adding rules like “must include two twirls and a bum wiggle” or by scoring the dances in a funny way: “I give that dance three unicorns!”
15. Pillow Pile: You will not believe how simple this one is! Find every pillow and cushion in your house, line them up on the floor— that’s it! Kids love to make paths, forts, slides and pretty much anything else their imaginations can come up with out of pillows and blankets.

If your kids are anything like mine, the hour before bedtime is the most chaotic time of the day.
In the evening, your energy is at its lowest and all you want to do is get them into bed, so you can finally rest.
Here is a question I have asked myself time and time again: How can I keep my cool and get everyone to bed without all the yelling?
Check out these five tips to help ensure your kids are tucked in on time without all the hassle.
Colouring books and simple activities like easy word searches and connect the dots are a great way to calm down with kids. The key word here is “with.”
You are much more likely to run into resistance with this tactic if you try to set them up at the table with a colouring book or workbook and walk away. This is not the time to try and be productive. It’s the time to connect with your little one.
Give your child their very own whiteboard or chalkboard and play tic-tactoe or hangman with them. These activities will allow you to spend some one-on-one time with your kiddo, while noticing how they are doing with their reading and writing.
2. Get them moving (gently)
You may have noticed that kids like to get rid of a lot of pent up energy right before bed. Give them a way to do so, calmly. Stretching and yoga are
wonderful ways to tell your body that it is time to calm down and get ready for sleep.
Many studies have found that yoga improves mindfulness, increases melatonin levels and helps reduce sleep disturbance in adults and children.
You can find several children’s yoga classes and poses on YouTube. The ones my kids like the most come with some sort of story or goal.
There is nothing more relaxing than reading a good book. Make a point to go to the library every now and then as a new influx of books that they picked out themselves can get even the most reluctant reader interested.
If your child is old enough to read, go back in time a bit and offer to read to them.
If your kiddo often fights the book part of bedtime, switch it up a bit with an audiobook that you can listen to together in a blanket fort or make up your own stories.
You would be surprised how much you can learn about what is going on in your child’s life by creating a story about them and asking a few thoughtfully placed questions.
Parents often hear more about their child’s day at bedtime than any other time. Yes, this is definitely a stall tactic, but it is also an important step in the calming-down routine. Right before bed is the time they feel vulnerable enough to share what is going on in their lives with you.
You can help instigate this by getting them to tell you about their day from
beginning to end. Let them make it into a story and help it along by asking questions: “What book did you read at storytime?” or “Who is Josh again?” or “What did the teacher say next?”
5.
There are many simple and calm but creative things you can incorporate into the bedtime routine.
These might include:
• Making each step of the bedtime routine into a Simon says game. “Simon says get a snack.”
• Choosing each other’s pajamas (feel free to change out of their wacky pick for you once they are down).
• Creating fun rules: “We have to do the whole bedtime routine with British accents” or “Let’s be monkeys as we walk up the stairs.”
• Playing music and dancing while brushing teeth as a family.
Your nighttime routine doesn’t have to be the most hectic part of the day. Finding ways to inject creativity and connection into your before-bed schedule can help calm everyone down and make for a more restful nighttime routine.

Exploring sustainability and environmentalism can be a great way for the whole family to connect over the common goal of caring for our planet. While it may seem overwhelming to make big changes, taking small steps and building momentum can make an incredible difference over time.
Approaching eco-friendly practices with curiosity and an open-minded attitude will benefit you and your family and help make loving our planet more interesting and fun.
An integral part of a family’s sustainability journey—that feels natural and sticks—involves open-ended questions and mindful discussion about the world around us, as well as learning and trying new things.
Maybe you or your children are already avid walkers, hikers or outdoor swimmers—whether you spend a lot of time outside with your family or not, having intentional nature visits with conversation about how we connect with our world can begin to grow your child’s desire to protect and respect our environment.
Try walking through a green space and chatting about the beauty that surrounds us, the importance of nature in our lives and the ecosystems that support our food systems and our wellbeing.
When we introduce these conversations and practices, not only do we feel more inclined to protect our environment, but we also enjoy the added benefits of physical activity and family time in fresh air.
At the grocery store or shopping mall, begin to consider what chain of events took place to get the item to the store shelf. When your children are with you, ask questions out loud about the items you are browsing.
Talk about where the product came from, who and what was involved in making it, how far it had to travel and how much packaging surrounds it. By starting to ponder these factors, you are priming yourself and your family to make more mindful and environmentally friendly purchases.
Beginning this dialogue helps us to make positive product swaps, build lasting change and train our minds to shop in a more sustainable way over time.
Visit a thrift store, or consignment store, and see what sort of treasures you can find. While it may not be realistic to do all your shopping at the thrift store, a trip there easily allows for the discussion of consumption— how much “stuff” we all buy, how much we use it and where it can end up.
These conversations can develop into a deeper understanding of consumerism and encourage us to think before we buy, which over time, can help us and our children make better decisions. When you’re at the secondhand store, try picking some items out for an upcycling craft. There’s often a treasure trove of unused yarns, magazines for collages and paintable wooden items. You and your child will feel a sense of pride for turning something old into something new!
Take some time to learn and try new things! A fun and easy way to make a positive impact on the world around us is to enjoy a trip to the library for environmentally focused reading material or spend an hour or two every week streaming age-appropriate documentaries. Eat at a restaurant that uses locally sourced produce, enjoy a local plant-based bakery or café or visit an artisan market—it can be an engaging and multi-sensory learning experience about reducing our footprint, while supporting great businesses close to home. You’ll be surprised at the ideas and conversations these activities can spark.
Lessons about sustainability don’t necessarily require leaving the house. Exploring the home together using the lens of environmental sustainability can get everyone involved in the chores and improve family habits. For example, try analyzing the current compost, recycling and waste setup you have. This exercise teaches our children about what items go in the trash, and what can get recycled or composted, and they may feel empowered to reduce waste. A simple family goal of turning lights off when leaving a room, always bringing along reusable mugs and water bottles or cooking food from scratch, can be a great way to build momentum.
Striving for sustainability comes with some effort and a learning curve, but by implementing these simple practices, and enjoying the process step-by-step, we can create lasting and meaningful change. Children who learn to appreciate nature and take care with their habits grow into adults who are environmental stewards.
Taking simple steps at a comfortable pace allows us to enjoy the beginning of a sustainability journey while connecting and learning with our loved ones.
