For this issue, we met up with Fred Pimentel owner of Longtail Pools and winner of the 2020 contractors awards to talk about the do’s and don’ts to keep your pool swim ready in these upcoming months. Taught by the best, Fred has some amazing recommendations for every type of pool.

1. How long have you been in the pool maintenance business and how long has Longtail Pools been in business? What services does your company offer? I have been working in the pool maintenance industry over the course of 16 years and Longtail Pools have been in business for about 15 of those years. Outside of weekly maintenance my company offers, installations, pool start-ups along with a variety of repairs from cracks to leaks.

Live Outdoors 10 Tips from a Pool Expert Expert Advice from Fred Pimentel of Longtail Pools

2. What sets Longtail Pools apart from other similar companies?

Also, color changes don’t always mean a low chlorine level - you need to find the problem and fix it.

Being not just a small business but an older one, Longtail Pools strive to be an honest and reliable service who are able to do a great job for a good price. We have also changed with the times by offering the option to make your pool as chemical free as possible if you are willing.

7. What are the benefits to having a chlorine pool versus a saltwater pool?

3. What sort of training have you had? I am pleased to say that my early training was accomplished by the influence of the two best pool companies at the time in hopes that in developing my business could live up to their same standards. As to course training, I have also acquired my Pool Technician Certification an absolute must of this kind of business.

4. What are 3 of the simplest tasks one could do for their own pool at home to maintain its quality? The first tip I have is to keep the hedges trimmed back as far as you can, doing this could lessen the mess keeping the pools surrounding area clear from decomposing leaves. Second, when it comes to the filter scoop out leaves, it isn’t just a winter chore. Third, as soon as you notice any change in your pool Inform your pool technician and do not always wait for the obvious ones like Murky water, bubbles and algae. Delaying small problems could lead to big ones in the future.

5. How often do you believe is best to have a pool professionally serviced? At the very least weekly service all year round is a must. The issue becomes that If you wait too long between cleanings, it takes more time for your pool to get back in shape, not looking as good and cost more money in the long run.

6. Can you explain what shocking a pool is - do you recommend it? Shocking the pool is a way of spiking the chlorine up with chlorine granules which is important if the chlorine level is low. A simple fix like adding chlorine tablets may not raise the level fast enough therefore, causing algae to grow. Shocking will also kill bacteria and viruses that may have made your pool their forever home.

Both pools have chlorine, but a salt system is easier on the skin, eyes, pool surface, ladders and lights. As I mentioned, tablets are very harsh and corrosive, so your skin tends to dry out and over time the pools surfaces and fixtures over time. The benefit of having a saltwater pool is that they do not require the tables tablets, Ph, Alk, and reduce the amount of algaecide and shock used in the water.

8. In your experience, what are some things that work best and ones that don’t work at all here in Bermuda? Although salt pools can be a lot of work to maintain, I believe they work the best here in Bermuda. This gives a variety of options of water to use like fresh water, tank water, gov water to fill your pool vs well water. Some minor things I would say is that I prefer sand filters over cartridge filters due to their high maintenance and I also recommend automatic pool vacuums.

9. What is a realistic budget you recommend with pools? or what do you expect people to spend? And are there any ways to keep costs low? Each pool company is different so the pricing will vary. Depending on what type of pool you have: Salt or Chlorine tablets will also make a difference in price. The size of the pool and its surroundings like hedges, grass, construction, dirt and direct sunlight all have an effect of the water, which can affect cost. For Longtail Pools, price can range between $280 - $420 a month but you can keep the cost down by keeping the pool as clean as you can throughout the week.

10. What do you enjoy most about working with pools? I wouldn’t call myself a designer but making the pools look their absolute best has to be my favorite part hands down. I also enjoy working outside, which makes it even better during the summer months.

Spend Time Outside & Stay Sun-safe Expert Advice from Bermuda Cancer & Health Centre

Cancer of the skin is by far the most common of all cancers according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), and it is on the rise! Exposure to the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays increases skin cancer risk, which can be dangerous and even deadly. Too much exposure can also cause sunburn, eye damage, and premature wrinkles. Suffering one or more blistering sunburns in childhood or adolescence more than doubles a person’s chances of developing melanoma later in life. Staying in the shade, shielding your skin with clothing, and using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30 can help lower your risk.

Take these steps to stay sun-safe:

1. Seek shade -limit your direct exposure to the sun, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when UV rays are strongest.

2. Slip on sun protective clothing - wear clothing and a widebrimmed hat to protect as much skin as possible. Protect your eyes with wrap-around sunglasses that block at least 99% of UV light.

3. Slop on sunscreen - 20 to 30 minutes before going outside, use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30: Reapply at least every 2 hours, as well as after swimming or sweating.

4. Check the UV Index – easily accessed on the home page of www.chc.bm, based on the UVI value of 1-11+ you can plan outdoor activities and practice appropriate sun protective measures.

5. Avoid tanning beds and sunlamps: Both can cause serious long-term skin damage and contribute to skin cancer.

sunscreens filter out about 93% of UVB rays, while SPF 30 filters out about 97%. SPF 50 blocks about 98% and SPF 100 about 99%. No sunscreen protects you completely.

• Mineral-based physical sunscreens (containing zinc oxide and titanium dioxide) are recommended over chemical based sunscreens (most other ingredients, potentially harmful ingredients that get absorbed into skin). However, the potential risk of not using sunscreen far outweighs the risks of using sunscreen, so any sunscreen is better than no sunscreen.

Remember sunscreen is not water or sweat proof, only water resistant. Sunscreen must be reapplied and products should specify whether it lasts for 40 minutes or 80 minutes while swimming or sweating. To learn more book a SunSmart presentation for your organisation, school or sports group, call or email Azuree Williams, at 236-1001 ext.1005/sunsmart@chc.bm or for more information, check out our website www.chc.bm.

Additionally, DO NOT forget to stay hydrated and drink lots of water!

Choose a sunscreen that is:

• Broad-spectrum protection - against both UVA (contribute to skin cancer and premature aging) and UVB rays (main cause of sunburn).

• Sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30. The higher SPF numbers mean more protection, but the higher you go, the smaller the difference becomes. For example, SPF 15

Live Your Best Life!

Expert Advice from Jodi Virgil of Organized Solutions Bermuda The year 2020 will forever be known as “the year the world slowed down stayed home”. As our houses became our safety zones and we were required to spend more time there, a few things became very apparent. For some, we were reminded of the importance of family, friends, and self-care. For many, self-care meant eating healthier foods, starting gardens at home, and engaging in exercise. It also meant completing lots of home projects, including DIY, decluttering and organising. As we made decisions to enhance our overall well-being, we were creating “healthy houses” - and not just the sanitizing and disinfecting kind.

What is a healthy house?

Well, when life gets busy, or we are going through a transition of some sort, clutter can easily build up. And the results of clutter are real. Studies show that people surrounded by clutter are less productive and more distracted. Likewise, research also shows the level of stress is directly proportional to the amount of stuff we own. Creating a healthy house means simplifying your space, which in turn can help simplify your life! Here are six simple tips to help create your Healthy House - just in time for the social-distance summer fun that awaits us!

1. Start Small Many times, we think we must “do it all” and we end up getting frustrated and overwhelmed. Choose one day to organise, set aside one hour, and start with one area.

2. It’s all in the Sort We often don’t realise how many items we have until they are all looking us…squarely in the face...at the same time! But not to worry, this can be solved. Choose your area and bring all “like items” together, to clearly see what you have. Decide what you will keep, donate, or dispose.

3. Decisions... Decisions! This is often the hardest part of decluttering because we sometimes

feel emotionally attached to our items. Use these questions to help. When have I last worn or used this item? Do I have several of the same item? Do I even like this item? Is it awkward to wear or use this item? Could someone else make better use of this item?

4. A Home within A Home “A place for everything and everything in its place”. When items have a place to live, it makes it much easier to find or access them. Think of your spaces as being “divided into zones”, which are based on what you do in that space. For example, an outdoor area may be divided into areas for relaxing, gardening or laundry. Put items that you need closest to where they will be used.

5. Mind the Mold Less clutter means less chances for dust to build up. We know that dust and humidity is a tricky combination in Bermuda and can be trigger allergies and asthma. Less clutter also makes it easier to do a quick tidy up and clean up- who would not want that?

6. Be a Smart Shopper Once an area has been cleared out and, you can think about storage solutions for the remaining items (the stuff you really need!) Baskets, bins, containers are great for this! Sometimes you can “shop at home” and your “new purchases” are your old bins you’ve recently emptied. But if you do need to purchase items, (which is always super fun!) be sure to measure your space before heading to the stores, to ensure a good fit. Local professional organizer Jodi Virgil of Organized Solutions Bermuda says, “When people are organized and have clear spaces, they feel more in control of their lives and have an increased sense of overall well-being, which leads to lower stress levels. We can design customised solutions for our clients to create a healthy house that brings lots of happiness!” To arrange for a complimentary space consultation with Organized Solutions Bermuda, please contact Jodi at 704-3725, jodi.virgil@organizedsolutionsbermuda.com, @jodi_virgil_osb or visit www.organizedsolutionsbermuda.com.

grapes can be a refreshing, light snack, or try cooking peaches or pineapple over the grill for a mouthwatering treat! Raw veggies or multigrain crackers and dip – Sliced veggies like cucumber, celery, carrots or peppers are packed with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. These can all be sliced and packed away beforehand. Combine with some humus, salsa, guacamole or a low-fat dressing/dip. Apple and peanut butter is a delicious way to enjoy a good balance of protein, fibre, vitamins and minerals. Popcorn – popping your own plain kernels at home and packing these with your own choice of sodium free seasoning such as cinnamon, chili or cocoa can be a low-calorie snack that can be filling as well as tasty. Beverages – it is important to make sure we are well hydrated when out in the hot sun. Adding citrus fruit, cucumber or mint to water (still or sparkling) helps to give it a refreshing twist. Try to keep sugary drinks, juices or sodas to a minimum by choosing sugar free alternatives. If making iced tea try to stick to things like lemon, ginger or stevia leaves to customize the taste rather than lots of added sugar or honey. Sandwiches/wraps – Choosing wholegrain/whole-wheat bread over white bread can keep us fuller for longer as well as providing us with plenty of fibre. Choose a lean protein such as egg, beans, sliced turkey or chicken along with some lettuce, tomato or cucumber. Wrap in tin foil or pack in Tupperware to keep safe from the sand and sea! BBQs – When BBQing make sure you marinate all meats before cooking and remove any badly burnt bits before eating to reduce the risk caused by cancer causing chemicals by up to 95%. Homemade marinades are usually the healthiest. Choose leaner cuts of meat whenever possible e.g. chicken cubes, fish or steak, rather than fatty or processed foods such as hotdogs, burgers, sausages and chicken wings, to further minimize the health risks. Don’t forget to take a side salad and BBQ some veggies too for an antioxidant boost! Trail mix – Trail mix is a great snack if you are having an active outside adventure, such as a long walk on the railway trail or a day of swimming. It can be high in calories so please limit your portion to no more than ¼ cup and make sure you’re active. Making your own trail mix with unsalted nuts, seeds and small amounts of dried fruit can provide you with a good source of protein as well as essential healthy fats. The best thing about trail mix is that it’s customizable so you can add what you have available in the cupboard. A Zumba variation which puts extra emphasis on toning and sculpting to define those muscles! Fantastic for active older adults and for those who are looking for a modified Zumba class that recreates the original moves you love at a lower-intensity.
